Rosie Perez recalled the confidence boost Johnny Depp gave her, which inspired her to fire her then-agent.
Perez and Depp co-starred in the series version of 21 Jump Street, which aired on Fox beginning in 1987 and later inspired the 2012 film of the same name starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
Depp starred in four seasons of the show as Officer Thomas “Tom” Hanson Jr, while Perez made a cameo as an illiterate drug dealer’s girlfriend.
“My first scene, Johnny Depp whispered in my ear, ‘Oh, darling, you’re too good for this s***,’” Perez recalled in a new interview with Variety.
“Then he invited me to his trailer, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, Johnny Depp’s invited me to his trailer.’ He’s on the phone, and he goes, ‘Yeah, yeah, she’s amazing. Her name is Rosie Perez. Hang on. Hey, Rosie – over here. Say hello to my girlfriend,...

London, Nov 25 (Ians) The UK government on Friday announced to put people who share so-called ‘deepfakes — explicit images or videos manipulated to look like someone without their consent — behind bars.
Under a planned amendment to the Online Safety Bill to protect women and girls, such offenders will be among those to be specifically criminalised for the first time and face potential time behind bars.
The government will also bring forward a package of additional laws to tackle a range of abusive behaviour including the installation of equipment, such as hidden cameras, to take or record images of someone without their consent, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
“This will deliver on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s pledge to criminalise the practice, in line with previous measures this government has taken to outlaw ‘upskirting’,” the ministry added.

With films such as 1960’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Karel Reisz was a pioneer in reshaping perceptions of ordinary Britons. I think there’s still lots to learn from them
Twenty years ago on Friday my father, the film-maker Karel Reisz, died at the age of 76. Along with Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson, he was a leading figure of the British new wave. Unlike Anderson, who cultivated an outspokenly cantankerous persona, he disliked being interviewed about his work and was never really a public figure. Yet, rather like Ken Loach today, his films were widely admired for compassionately exploring the parts of British society that most earlier directors had ignored. At a time of economic turmoil and intense disillusion with politics, they remain urgently relevant.

Netflix has dropped its first trailer for season five of its flagship drama The Crown.
The newest season, which will have its global premiere on 9 November, is expected to be the series’ second to last. It is set in the 1990s, a decade that introduced manifold sources of instability to Buckingham Palace, many of which can be glimpsed in the trailer.
“The royal family is in genuine crisis,” declares Martin Bashir – played by Ten Percent star Prasanna Puwanarajah – in the wide-ranging trailer, which depicts the marriage of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and King Charles III (Dominic West) in a state of disintegration.
Later, the trailer shows Diana taking a chair for her now infamously discredited Panorama interview and driving recklessly through an intersection. “People will never understand how it’s really been for me, I never stood a chance,” Diana reflects amid the chaos.

Broadcast news channels will be able to air judges’ sentencing remarks from the U.K. Crown Court for the first time from July 28, following a landmark change in the law by the country’s Ministry of Justice.
The move will allow the public to see and hear judges explain the reasoning behind their sentences, and will open up some of the best-known courts across the U.K., including the Central Criminal Court, which is more commonly known as the Old Bailey.
Only the judge will be filmed during any sentencing that is broadcast, in order to protect the privacy of victims, witnesses and jurors. The sentencing at the Old Bailey on July 28 of Ben Oliver, who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his grandfather in south London, is expected to be the first broadcasted case.

Afternoon Insiders. A week is a long time in TV and film, and it’s also a long time in politics. Max Goldbart here and we’ve got you covered on all three. Read on.
Bye Bye Boris
All over in 36 hours: Few in Britain’s London politics bubble would have predicted that the scandal to bring down Pm Boris Johnson would involve a little known Deputy Chief Whip called Chris Pincher, but that is exactly what transpired this week. Within a colossal 36 hours that rocked the UK political landscape, Johnson went from feeling vaguely safe after an almost-year-long-stretch of scandals to resigning in disgrace on the steps of his 10 Downing Street home. At times it was almost impossible to keep up (although the BBC and Sky coverage did a fantastic job), as minister after minister resigned in protest at Johnson’s handling of the Pincher scandal and a more general feeling of disarray,...

Boris Johnson has confirmed he is leaving No.10 today.
The under-fire Pm has finally agreed to end his Premiership after days of facing mass cabinet resignations.
Speaking on the steps of Downing Street, he thanked the British people for their support and said he will continue with the job until the autumn while a leadership contest takes place in the coming months.
But it’s worth noting that the last leadership contest took two months, and Johnson will visit the Queen at the end of the process to tell her he is standing down.

After a seismic 36 hours during which British politics has been rocked, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is stepping down and the British media is in overdrive speculating on what happens next. In the UK broadcasting world, questions will soon be raised about a future that will almost certainly have a different Culture Secretary than current incumbent Nadine Dorries.
Following the news Johnson is resigning, schedules are being uprooted as news teams provide minute-by-minute reports on the fast-moving events and offer what insight they can. The UK’s major TV and radio stations have already been completely dominated for the past 36 hours with wall-to-wall coverage of the chaos, which was triggered by the resignations of Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid in response to the Chris Pincher scandal. China’s top broadcasting regulator said Thursday that it will ban BBC World News from the country, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The ban comes exactly a week after the U.K. media regulator Ofcom ruled to revoke the U.K. broadcast license of Chinese state broadcaster CCTV’s English-language service Cgtn.
China’s National Radio and TV Administration (Nrta) said that BBC World News was found to have “undermined China’s national interests and ethnic solidarity” because of its China-related reports that “went against the requirements that news reporting must be true and impartial,” said Xinhua.
According to Xinhua, the Nrta wrote in a statement: “As the channel fails to meet the requirements to broadcast in China as an overseas channel, BBC World News is not allowed to continue its service within Chinese territory. The Nrta will not accept the channel’s broadcast application for the new year.

Chandigarh, Dec 5 (Ians) A faction of 36 cross-party UK MPs, led by the Labour Party's Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, have come out in support of the ongoing farmers' agitation in India, asking British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to raise the matter with New Delhi.
The MPs, in a missive to Raab, asked to pressurise India against the recently enacted agriculture laws which "exploit" the farmers and those who depend on farming.
They further urged the Foreign Secretary to hold talks with the Indian government through the support of Sikh farmers in Punjab and abroad.
In his letter, Dhesi, the Labour MP for Slough, said that last month several MPs wrote to the Indian High Commission in London about the impacts of the three new farm laws.
"This is an issue of particular concern to Sikhs in the UK and those linked to Punjab, although it also heavily impacts on other Indian states.

“You do not survive the illness through fortitude and strength of character, whatever the Prime Minister’s colleagues will tell us,” said Maitlis, referring to comments made by members of the government while Pm Boris Johnson is battling the illness in hospital.

Maitlis also took aim at suggestions that coronavirus is “the great leveler”, i.e. that everyone, rich or poor, suffers the same consequences.

U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson has declared a partial lockdown of the country, effective immediately.
In an address broadcast to the nation on Monday evening, Johnson urged Britons to stay home to save lives. The prime minister forbade leaving home for anything apart from shopping for basic necessities like food and medicines, medical needs, one form of exercise a day, and travelling to and from work for essential services only.
Gatherings of more than two people are also banned. The police can be pressed into force to keep people off the streets and to ensure the social distancing essential to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Only shops providing essential services will remain open. In addition, parks will stay open, although gatherings of more than two will be prohibited.
“Without a huge national effort there will come a moment when no healthcare service can cope,” Johnson said. “It is vital...

A politically charged Berlin Film Festival was further enlivened on the third day of the European Film Market by a demonstration targeting Chilean armed forces.
On Saturday, the Martin Gropius Bau, the site of the Efm, saw a group of anonymous protestors unfurl a big banner from one of the market’s upper floors, with activists shouting out, “How can you celebrate Chile when Chile is killing its own people?”
The protests were in response to the festival throwing a large spotlight on Chilean cinema, drama series and documentaries as its Country in Focus this year.
Whether the protestors chose the right target, however, is another matter.
Many of the large delegation of Chilean cineasts and content creators in Berlin for the Focus are fellow protestors. After an official photo is taken Sunday morning of the whole of the Chilean delegation, members will stage their own personal demonstration with posters...
