A Night of Horror International Film Festival, announces its first programming wave for 2024 today. Long known as Australia’s premier genre film event, the festival now takes place in the United States. This year, the festival’s 16th edition – and first in the US – screens from March 1-3, at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Says festival director Dean Bertram:
To move a fest I co-founded in Sydney, Australia, back in 2006, to America feels surreal. A Night of Horror has long taken pride in being recognized for its excellence in showcasing the best and bloodiest new horror films from around the globe. And this year’s program is already shaping up to be one of my favorite line-ups yet. In the first wave alone are some of the most original, terrifying, and at times hilarious genre offerings that you’ll see this year: A bloody buffet of zombies,...

Russian-Kazakh multi-hyphenate Timur Bekmambetov has teamed up with MarVista Entertainment, Endeavor Content and Pulsar Content on a slate of feature films in his pioneering Screenlife format that will be presented to buyers at the TIFF market.
Bekmambetov told Variety during the Toronto Film Festival, that the rapid growth, critical recognition and box-office success of Screenlife films – which take place almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens – prove the format is “more than just a gimmick.”
“It is the first time the presence of Screenlife movies at a major film market is so prominent,” he said. “Just a few years ago, film festivals and industry events used to have only one or two [Screenlife] pictures in the program or in the sales slate, but now it’s already multiple studios and distributors producing and promoting dozens of movies set on a computer or a smartphone screen.”

There’s a fine line between talking about suicide and encouraging it. The risk is especially high where there are opportunities for imitation. The Blue Whale Challenge, which became a media sensation around 2015, is generally believed to have begun as a moral panic, but belief in it appears to have subsequently led several individuals to form copycat groups, resulting in deaths. Is it possible to address this safely in a fiction film? How does one balance the potential benefits of raising awareness with the risk of reviving the idea?
Before proceeding further with this review of Anna Zaytseva’s film, which screened as part of Fantasia 2021, here’s a piece of advice: if you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, please contact one of these specialist services, where you can speak to people who will understand your feelings and can provide you with support. The desire to die, or the feeling that.

Anna Zaytseva's heart-pounding teen slasher #Blue_Whale just had its world at Fantasia 2021, and Wow. I don't really know who she is yet, but I already hope to see more from her after watching this debut. There's not an ounce of fat on this film, and by that I mean the pace is lightning fast. It's refreshing to experience after so many slow-burn films. With #Blue_Whale, we have an ultra-modern form of storytelling, and if you blink too much, you might actually miss something. Not long after the film begins, a once-happy girl steps in front of a train, leaving behind a grieving mother and older sister Dana (Anna Potebnya). Something doesn't sit well with Dana, and she goes searching for clues in her sister's computer and...

Koch Media has acquired German and Italian VOD rights to Russian filmmaker Anna Zaytseva’s feature debut “#Blue_Whale” ahead of its Aug. 17 world premiere at the 25th Fantasia Int’l Film Festival.
“Searching” and “Profile” creator and Screenlife format pioneer Timur Bekmambetov is a co-producer of “#Blue_Whale.”
The cautionary tale is inspired by a news story Zaytseva came upon years ago which was later presented to her as a treatment. The story of teens being pulled into a deadly online game resonated with her at once. “I wanted to understand how it happens – how children could get hooked online and manipulated so easily,” she said.
Set in a small Russian town, “#Blue_Whale” tracks young Dana (Anna Potebnya) whose younger sister has just killed herself. Anxious to find out what drove her sister to step in front of a speeding train, she delves into her sister’s online...
