For Henry Lloyd-Hughes, shooting the scenes of “We Were the Lucky Ones” that take place in a Soviet gulag in Siberia were taxing to shoot but in “the right way” due to how it was shot. “All of those scenes, by and large, were shot chronologically, which meant that there was an intensity to that period of work for me that was physically challenging and mentally grueling, but in a way that I think was right for what we were trying to get across,” he describes to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). Those scenes also got a surprise boost from the weather in Romania in the form of an unexpected snowstorm. “They had set aside these cannons, like these hoses of snow to try and cover it to make it look like Siberia. Then two days to go and there’s a huge...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for We Were the Lucky Ones finale.] The power of love prevails in We Were the Lucky Ones. The series finale of the Hulu limited series, based on Georgia Hunter’s book of the same name, aired on May 2. After years of being separated during World War II, the Kurc family is finally reunited. Herta (Moran Rosenblatt), Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), their son, and the Kurcs have a tearful reunion in the final episode. Rosenblatt tells TV Insider that the Kurc family’s reunion was “amazing” to film. “First of all, the setup was incredible. It was like hundreds of extras, all dressed or with a suitcase,” she says of the pivotal train station scene. The actress continues, “This scene was really heartbreaking, especially when I think about Genek and his father and Mila being reunited with her husband. I watched from the side, and I’m getting chills thinking about it now.” This is ...

Even with all the preparation that Joey King did for “We Were the Lucky Ones,” nothing could have prepared her for meeting the descendants of the Kurc family. Anna, the daughter of King’s character, showed up on set while filming was happening in Malaga, Spain. “It was this very emotional, beautiful moment. The first thing she said to me when she me, she outstretched her arms and she looked at me and she said, ‘Mama,’” she reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The gesture brought tears to King’s eyes. “She had not met me yet, hasn’t seen any of the work I’ve done to portray her mother yet, yet is here giving me this warm embrace and confidence that says, ‘Yes, you are playing my mother and I’m so excited.’ It just felt like a real big green light for me.

The general premise of the erotic thriller is predicated on combining two obvious elements: sexually-charged images with the use of storyline elements to make one feel uneasy during the downtime or even during the sexual shenanigans. Countless genre titles have employed a facet of this throughout their runtime, and with few exceptions rarely turns up in the LGBTQ+ realm. Israeli director Nitzan Gilady, adopting an experience from a real hate crime committed in Tel Aviv several years ago, offers his take on the subject matter while offering a topical touch to his latest feature, “In Bed.”

As of Episode 4, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is still in the midst of the Nazi domination of Europe. But the Hulu limited series has already displayed a preference for swerving away from the expected tropes of the period. It’s telling a World War II saga that features no battlefields and a chronicle of Jewish resistance that is more about forging and smuggling than about killing Nazis.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” is all the better for showing the audience new kinds of hardships and new avenues for survival, too. It shines when dramatic moments feel specific to the Kurcs, the Polish Jewish family the show follows as the war scatters them across Europe and even further afield, as opposed to the kinds of war imagery that, given the number of WWII dramas each year, can appear standard issue.

There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred. Devastating, and profoundly moving, “We Were the Lucky Ones” illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew geopolitical espionage thriller Hit & Run, co-created, executive produced and headlined by Fauda’s Lior Raz, for a second season. The news comes a month and a half after the release of Season 1, which ended with a major cliffhanger.
Hit & Run, which also starred Sanaa Lathan, Kaelen Ohm, Moran Rosenblatt and Gregg Henry, was well received by critics and viewers, with 70%+ ratings from both official reviews and audience feedback. But the sprawling drama, whose first season, impacted by the pandemic, filmed in New York and Israel, is expensive.
Because of the Covid-related industry shutdown, the nine-episode Season 1 took three years to produce. It debuted August 6 and broke into Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 the following week at No. 8. It was the thriller’s only appearance on the overall weekly chart, which other Netflix originals like Outer Banks and Virgin River recently topped.

Photo: 'Kiss Me Kosher'/ ‘Kiss Me Kosher’, the directorial debut of Venezuela-born, Israel-raised, German-based director Shirel Peleg, is a film with layers. On its surface, the film is a cute rom-com about an Israeli woman and a German woman getting ready to marry. More intriguingly, the film is international relations, writ small. Shira (Moran Rosenblatt) and Maria (Luise Wolfram), already facing anti-gay discrimination from Israel’s conservatives, find that the sexual orientation controversy pales in comparison to the wounds of the Holocaust, still nursed generations later: Maria, by virtue of being a non-Jewish German, is seen by some as being too biologically similar to a Nazi for comfort. To complicate matters further, Shira’s grandmother Berta (Rivka Michaeli), one of the most vocal critics of Shira’s choice of bride, herself is clandestinely involved with her Palestinian Arab neighbor Ibrahim (Salim Dau). The whole thing is a powderkeg,...

The main character of Nitzan Gilady’s Wedding Doll is a common character archetype, but one that’s rarely given the opportunity to be a lead, and even more rarely placed into a potential romance. Hagit (Moran Rosenblatt) is a young woman living in Israel with a mild mental illness that makes her appear slightly askew to those around her.
Hagit smiles a little too often, slightly stumbles over her words, and just appears a little bit too friendly to those around her. It’s not hard to imagine a version of this movie that plays out like Lucky McKee’s May instead of a romantic comedy sprinkled with social commentary.
It’s not just Hagit’s manner, but her pet habits that cement her reputation as an eccentric in the community. Her room is adorned with a wall of women in wedding dresses, and she spends much of her...

We’ve all been mentally challenged at the movies. Not very rewarding. Being mentally challenged In the movies, on the other hand, can be the route to cash and prizes (see “Forrest Gump,” “Rain Man,” “I Am Sam,” “Shine”). For all the great performances we’ve seen involving characters who are developmentally disabled, though, they’re very seldom presented as sexually attractive or active – in fact, sexuality itself is typically left out the equation. Sure, there are exceptions—"Benny and Joon," "The Other Sister"—but if erotic attraction arises, it’s generally between intellectual equals. Which is one of the reasons Israeli director Nitzan Giladi’s “The Wedding Doll” caught the attention of audiences when it played at Toronto last month, en route to an Ophir award for star Moran Rosenblatt in Tel Aviv. In "The Wedding Doll," Rosenblatt plays Hagit, a worker in a family-run paper factory who is...

★★★★☆ Nitzan Giladi's fantastic debut feature Wedding Doll (2015), premièring at Toronto this year, is the second Israeli film in as many years to focus on the difficult relationship between a young woman with a mental disability and the family member living with and caring for her. Where Asaf Korman's Next To Her (2014) mined the more unsettling recesses of a co-dependent relationship, Giladi has chosen to make a film all about the quest for independence. Of course, that is difficult in modern society when learning difficulties of any kind still come laden with all manner of stigma. "Weirdo!" is the cry of a young boy as Hagit (Moran Rosenblatt) revels in the sunrise.
Giladi's script does an impressive job of excavating the spectrum of different prejudices buried beneath the surface. These do not just come in the form of overt nastiness, but subtle put-downs and mistrust even from those who...
