On Sunday night, “American Idol” aired “This is Us” Part 2 special that showcased fan favorites like 16-year-old Broadway-style belter Claire Jolie Goodwin, Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Kyle Tanguay and Courtney Timmons, who was plucked off the street by host Ryan Seacrest and was given an unofficial audition. As a result, her rendition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” racked up 68 million views online.
But the focus was mainly on sharing both seen and unseen performances of such Top 20 artists as Francisco Martin, Kimmy Gabriela, Faith Becnel, Dillon James, Aliana Jester, Louis Knight, Jovin Webb, DeWayne Crocker Jr. and Cyniah Elise.
However, most “American Idol” viewers were probably on pins and needles over which of the two female country artists — Grace Leer or Lauren Mascitti — who were vying to be the last finalist won the most fan votes to compete in the Top 20.
This talented twosome has quite a bit in common.

The second of three episodes of “American Idol” showcasing Hollywood Week airs on March 22. Over the course of the three episodes devoted to Hollywood Week (the others aired last Sunday and this Monday) the contestants sing in three rounds: lines of 10, groups, and solos. The judges will winnow the list down to just 40 who will sing in a showcase set to air on Sunday, March 29.
Those contenders will be culled down to just half that number and that Top 20 will be judged on both solo performances and celebrity duets over the course of three episodes. Once the live playoffs of “American Idol” season 18 begin, you will be able to predict the outcome of each episode in our predictions center.
Below, follow along with all the action on the Night 7 episode of “American Idol.”

“Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, something happens that you never would have expected,” Luke Bryan eloquently stated atop Sunday’s American Idol. And dag-gummit, he was right.
Hollywood Week continued with yet another curveball for the remaining contestants: The time-honored (and long-dreaded) Group Round has been replaced by a Duet Round, leading to a frantic frenzy of pairings. Honestly, the stress of everyone having to choose a partner gave me flashbacks to gym class, where I wasn’t exactly anyone’s first choice for a dodgeball teammate. (Then again, find me a TV recapper who was.

Last year, Emmy copied her big brother Oscar’s trend of having a host-less ceremony, so the annual awards show went without an emcee for the first time since 2003. However, if Emmy viewers have their say this year, the Television Academy will hop off the bandwagon and hire a host. A whopping 73% of readers voted in our recent poll they wanted a host this year because they “missed” having one last year. Compare that to 15% who said they’ll “have to think about it more” and 12% who argued “no,” because “hosts just waste precious time.” To the 73% of people who voted “yes,” we want to hear your creative ideas for an Emmy host! Vote in our poll and then defend your choice in the comments section.

Starting all the way back in 2002, “American Idol” blasted onto our TV screens and quickly became the number one show in the country. Even though the series held that title for seven years, Fox announced the end of the series in 2016 after 15 seasons. Luckily ABC brought the show back in 2018, refreshing our love and healing our pain. Over the past 18 years an array of judges have sat at the panel helping to decide who will be the next “American Idol.” Set the course for memory lane as you take a look back at our worst-to-best rankings of “American Idol” judges over the years, including Simon Cowell and Katy Perry.

History was made during Sunday’s third episode of “American Idol” Season 18 when Courtney Timmons was brought up to the audition room by host Ryan Seacrest despite her missing the deadline. Ryan spotted the 22-year-old security guard from Harris Neck, Ga sitting outside the building on the stoop, so he decided to make an exception for her and let her perform for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Following her pitch-perfect rendition of Andra Day‘s “Rise Up,” Ryan’s eyes filled up with tears and Katy proclaimed, “You’re probably the best singer we’ve seen today.” Watch Courtney’s audition video above.

ABC airs the the third of five “American Idol” episodes devoted to the audition stage of the competition on March 1. Another 15 would-be winners of season 18 will sing for the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — hoping to get one of those coveted tickets to Hollywood.
Which of these will number among the 150 contestants who make it to this next stage? At the end of a week in Hollywood, only 40 moved on to the next round which saw them whisked off to Hawaii at the end of January where they auditioned for judges again, this time in front of guests staying at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Honolulu.
Only half of these Top 40 acts made the cut. In turn, the Top 20 performed twice more for the judges: first in solos and then duets with celebrities. Just 14 of them were put through to the live shows, which begin in April.
