Adapted from Joshuah Bearman’s 2012 Playboy article of the same name, The Big Cigar brings another piece of culture writing to mind: New York Times critic James Poniewozik’s “The Comfortable Problem with Mid TV.” The series has some visual panache, a lively soundtrack, a great cast, and an important story to tell. And it makes for a really good thumbnail on the Apple TV+ app. But The Big Cigar lacks the craft and conviction of the “great” shows and films it imitates. It’s good in places, bad in others, but mostly just mid.
The series follows Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton (André Holland) as he attempts to flee the U.S. before the feds can arrest him on a bogus murder charge. Without many allies to call on, Newton enlists the help of sympathetic, if slightly harebrained, movie producers Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) and Stephen Blauner...

Charles Officer’s flashy feature reflects on violence handed down the generations but has too much faith in fatigued beats from the gangster-film locker
Canadian-Jamaican director Charles Officer’s second feature looks flashy, sounds cool and – Ghost Dog-style – likes to fling out shurikens of eastern philosophy every which way. But this tale of freelance underworld fixer Akilla Brown, played with careworn wisdom by Saul Williams, doesn’t live up to its sharp tailoring and has too much faith in fatigued beats from the gangster-film locker.
Journeyman Akilla is about to retire from the illegal cannabis-distribution business in Toronto, rendered redundant by legalisation. But he finds himself on the end of a double-barrel shotgun when a depot belonging to “the Greek”, his boss, is raided by rival hoodlums. Thanks to his sang-froid, the heist runs off the rails, and Akilla steps in to stop his crew from torturing young soldier Sheppard (Thamela Mpumlwana) who,...

In the Dark premiered on The CW in the fall of 2019, and it didn’t take long for the show to build a large following. During season one, the series centered around a young blind woman Murphy Mason (Perry Mattfeld) who is attempting to get to the bottom of the death of her friend, Tyson (Thamela Mpumlwana). However, the mystery is deepened by the fact that no one believes he is dead other than Murphy dead who insists that she found his dead body in an alley near her apartment. When Murphy finds the body, she knows it’s Tyson’s by

The weathered, storied face of rapper-actor Saul Williams does the heaviest lifting in “Akilla’s Escape,” an exceedingly solemn crime drama from Canadian filmmaker Charles Officer that benefits from every ounce of his natural gravitas. As a Toronto drug trader facing the ugly roots of his underworld life in the wake of a botched deal, Williams conveys decades of isolation, ennui and internalized violence in a shorthand of creased eyes and twitching lips. Profound but uncomplaining pain seems to seep from his very pores. It’s a crinkled, considered feat of physical performance that “Akilla’s Escape,” unfortunately, doesn’t wholly count on: Instead, an overworked script underlines his trauma at every turn with fussy structural tricks and heavy-handed symbolism.
Despite an essential narrative that could have been plucked from many a straightforward B thriller, Officer’s film announces loftier intentions from its elaborate opening credit sequence, which alternates vintage newsreels and...

"I'm doing this my way..." Vertical Ent. has released the official trailer for Akilla's Escape, an acclaimed "crime noir" film that originally premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival last fall. The second feature from Jamaica-Canadian filmmaker Charles Officer (also of Nurse.Fighter.Boy), the film is about the modern urban child-soldier. Saul Williams stars as Akilla Brown, who is about to cash out of his cannabis growing business. He then captures a fifteen-year-old Jamaican boy in the aftermath of an armed robbery at his place. Over one grueling night, Akilla confronts a cycle of generational violence he thought he escaped. The cast includes Thamela Mpumlwana, Donisha Rita, and Claire Prendergast. I heard tons of great things about this film out of TIFF last year, and I've been looking forward to catching up with it ever since. Quite a powerful trailer!! I dig the style, the poster is dope, and...

No one ever outruns their past. Momentary reprieves might mark your journey, but history always wins in the end. Akilla Brown knows this better than most. At the age of 15, Akilla (played by Thamela Mpumlwana) grows up embedded in the hustle of New York City’s concrete jungle, an environment governed by rival gangs and faction-fueled violence. In the wake of tragedy and death, the streetwise prodigy ventures into the unknown, forced to maneuver through the trials of adulthood alone.

There's good news tonight. The CW has given an early third season renewal to the network's In the Dark TV series. The CW has announced a flurry of renewals.
Three of the network’s freshman shows, “All American,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In The Dark,” will return for second seasons, as well as “The 100,” which gets a seventh outing. This means that all five of The CW’s first-year shows, including the previously-renewed “Legacies” and “Charmed,” have been picked up for a sophomore run, a first for the network.
The sixth season of “The 100” is set to premiere on April 30, and will see the characters descending to a new planet after being frozen in stasis pods on a spaceship for decades, after escaping an uninhabitable Earth.
“The 100,” originally inspired by the young adult novels by Kass Morgan, is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. In the Dark‘s Murphy Mason isn’t your typical CW heroine: She’s a disaffected, sardonic, kind of callous twentysomething who enjoys her booze and morning-after pills. And she also happens to be blind.
In Thursday’s series premiere, we meet Murphy (played by Shameless‘ Perry Mattfeld) mid-coitus, as her guide dog Pretzel watches nearby. “This dog is so weird. He follows me around everywhere. He’s like a stalker,” Murphy says dryly.
Afterward, Murphy sends her sexual partner on his way without so much as a cuddle. When he notes that she doesn’t have his number to text him later,...

“In the Dark” isn’t subtle about wanting to be, as the CW would put it, daring and defiant. Corinne Kingsbury’s new drama brands its heroine so aggressively as an anti-heroine that hardly a scene goes by without a reminder that Murphy (Perry Mattfeld) is a surly alcoholic with a taste for one-night stands and crippling emotional immaturity. She is also blind, a fact that the show alternately treats with respect and as an extra winking twist on TV’s default sighted protagonists. What’s more, Murphy embarks on a potentially dangerous mission to find out what happened to her friend Tyson (Thamela Mpumlwana), a teenager who once saved her from a horrific mugging.
Mattfeld does her best to cut through Murphy’s stubborn disaffection in order to find the stung woman underneath, even though the scripts barely give her any room to do it in between scowling cigarette breaks.
