Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

Line of Duty is over, perhaps for good. It’s time to dismantle that evidence wall, file the exhibits away, and close the door on AC-12. With H unmasked, we can all rest our adrenal glands and get back to a healthy, Jimmy Nesbitt-free sleep pattern.
Once that’s achieved, if you start to feel the itch for more seismic shocks and sleights-of-hand, here are a few suggestions of what to watch next – eight TV thrillers that provide similar doses of double-dealing, truth-concealing, witness-squealing, case-breaking shenanigans. Add your own recommendations below!

Bodyguard proved that there was life after the Red Wedding for Richard Madden. His performance as David Budd, a former combat soldier living a new – and equally dangerous – life as a Principal Protection Officer (Ppo) in the London Met deservedly netted him a Golden Globe and a Scottish Bafta award.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, antiheroes dominated television, but now more traditional heroes with well-defined moral compasses stand shoulder-to-shoulder with characters willing to be ruthless to meet their goals.
For years, characters including Tony Soprano, Walter White and Don Draper reigned supreme, helping their respective series rack up dozens of Emmy nominations. HBO’s “The Sopranos” received seven noms (two wins) in the drama series race alone between 1999 and 2007, while AMC’s “Breaking Bad” scored five drama series noms (two wins) between 2009 and 2014, and the same cabler’s “Mad Men” nabbed eight drama series noms (four wins) between 2008 and 2015. Morally ambiguous protagonists were all the rage and certainly had everyone talking.
Now, even though characters are never painted as perfect, dramas such as NBC’s “This Is Us” and FX’s “Pose” are leaning further into the aspirational.
“Just by definition, a hero is someone who folks admire,” says...

“What does panic sound like?” That’s the main question Emmy-nominated composer Ruth Barrett wanted to solve when scoring the hit BBC/Netflix political thriller “Bodyguard.” “I was trying to tap into what is that sound,” she explains, which became the key to unlocking the show’s dramatic underscore. “That’s how we distilled it, with these modular synth sounds and this muscular brass sound underneath,” Barrett reveals. “It heightens the experience. So you’re already terrified; I was terrified watching it without any music, and then I was like what can I do to this to heighten that?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Barrett above.

“We wanted to meld the political thriller with the cop show,” reveals writer/creator Jed Mercurio about his acclaimed hit action drama “Bodyguard.” Ever since it became a ratings powerhouse for the BBC last year, the show has won over critics and audiences globally on Netflix, and is often heralded for its propulsive pacing and high tension storytelling. “To hear things like ‘I forgot to breathe’ or ‘I just couldn’t move from my TV,’” Mercurio says, “is so thrilling to have that kind of response.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mercurio above.

Bodyguard made him a star – but he hasn’t always been comfortable as the lead. He talks about bullies, his inner ‘fat lad’ and new Elton John biopic Rocketman
For some lucky actors, there are moments when their career suddenly shifts into a higher gear. The right part comes along, the world notices, and boom! their whole life is different. This happened to Richard Madden with Bodyguard, in August last year. He played the tight-mouthed, tight-muscled David Budd, personal minder to Keeley Hawes’ home secretary, Julia Montague, in Jed Mercurio’s six-part BBC One thriller, and the country went bananas.
Bodyguard was great TV – gripping, unpredictable, sexy, with a madly Ott finale – but nobody could have predicted the furore it would cause. It was a national event, achieving the BBC’s largest drama audience for a decade. Social media was aflame every Sunday, with much of the heat centred on Madden,...

Emmy support for British imports are always hard to measure. And with the surfeit of Netflix content, many worthy series get buried there, even with a push from the awards team. But BBC breakout “Bodyguard” is such a popular word-of-mouth and social media sensation that star Richard Madden has broken into contention, boosted by that unexpected Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama win at the Golden Globes.
Until now Madden, 32, was best-known for his career-launching “Game of Thrones” role almost a decade back as princely Robb Stark, who met an untimely demise in Season Three’s Red Wedding. In Netflix’s “Bodyguard,” he plays David Budd, a tightly-wound, shell-shocked war veteran turned police sergeant who is assigned to protect the controversial home secretary, Rt. Hon. Julia Montague MP (Keeley Hawes), whose political views he profoundly disavows. But she doesn’t know that when they fall into a lusty clandestine affair.

Richard Madden is currently poised to nab a Best Drama Actor Primetime Emmy Award nomination for playing David Budd in the BBC One/Netflix series “Bodyguard,” sitting in fourth place in our combined Emmy odds. He’s behind Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) in first place, Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) in second place and Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) in third place; Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”) is in fifth and Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”) in sixth. But here are five reasons why you may be underestimating Madden’s chances:
1. Accessibility and visibility
After its initial August-to-September run on BBC One, “Bodyguard”‘s six-episode first season was made available to audiences outside of the UK and Ireland on Netflix, which dropped the entire season on Oct. 26. Madden could benefit from wide-range visibility, given that the show is now easily accessible to Emmy voters.

After taking on the role as Rob Stark in HBO’s uber-popular HBO Game of Thrones, Richard Madden has found new success as the star of the Netflix series Bodyguard.
“With Game of Thrones launching again, you’re back in people’s psyche again as Rob Stark,” Madden said during the Bodyguard presentation at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys on the Paramount lot. “As an actor, you kind of get pigeonholed or just known for one role because it has been a very successful thing.”
Speaking on the success of the critically acclaimed Bodyguard, the Golden Globe-winning actor added, “I did something like this which I didn’t expect to do so well, and it’s lovely to be recognized as something totally different from furs and swords.”

Keeley Hawes has cornered the market in playing complex characters, but off-screen is there a role for life’s simpler pleasures? She talks to Rebecca Nicholson about the joys of TV, meeting her husband on set – and caravanning with Emma Bunton
A couple of months ago, Keeley Hawes was in the Wolseley on London’s Piccadilly, about to have lunch, when she saw a familiar face across the room. She was meeting her husband, the actor Matthew Macfadyen. “I went, ‘My God, it’s Amber Rudd,’” she whispers. In the television juggernaut that was BBC One’s Bodyguard, Hawes was Julia Montague, the ill-fated home secretary who took no nonsense, though she took a shine to her security detail, played by Richard Madden. She had researched Rudd for the role, and the similarities did not go unnoticed. But the pair were yet to meet.

Not too many people had penciled in Richard Madden to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama Series — including the man himself. And he said so from the stage.
Game of Thrones‘ alum Madden topped a field of which only one person — Ozark‘s Jason Bateman — also was nominated in the category last year. The also-rans this go-round were Stephan James (Homecoming), Billy Porter (Pose) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). It was Madden’s first career Globe win and nomination. Rhys won the comedy actor Emmy in September for the final season of FX’s Cold War spy thriller.
The BBC politcal thriller, which streams on Netflix, is set in and around the corridors of power. Bodyguard follows David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, “Bodyguard” star Richard Madden sits down with Variety‘s features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, to talk about playing a former soldier with Ptsd, who is tasked with protecting Britain’s Home Secretary.
“In a lot of movies and television we see Ptsd as someone closes a door too loud or a car backfires and our subject suddenly is transported back to Afghanistan in the middle of this fighting and men are dying,” Madden says. “That does happen sometimes for people with Ptsd — they have flashbacks like that — but that’s not the only thing that happens.”
Madden shares that he was most interested in bringing to life the daily struggle of someone in that position — the anxiety and depression that comes with the disorder.

After three seasons as Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones,” you might expect Richard Madden to aim for lighter fare. Instead, he’s the titular “Bodyguard,” the UK series that shattered ratings records during its initial run on BBC One, and has now found international success via (what else) Netflix.
As David Budd, the specialized protection officer tasked with protecting Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), the Scottish actor with the James Dean face is now a rumored contender to take over the role of James Bond. Both Budd and Bond are lawmen of few words. However, Madden said he considers the iconic British spy to be of another world altogether.

Not so long ago, it would seem the whole of Britain was on standstill on Sunday nights to watch Richard Madden in the BBC series ‘Bodyguard’. The nation was addicted to the tension each episode brought, and whose ending gave us the possibility of a second season.
With the dust now settled on the originally planned one-off series, due to its popularity and the brilliance of creator Jed Mercurio, Richard Madden has set tongues wagging by confirming to the Daily Mail that he will be imminently sitting down with Mercurio to discuss ideas for David Budd’s next traumatic adventure.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “Bodyguard” through the finale.)
David Budd needs a break. The lead character played by Richard Madden in BBC’s thriller series “Bodyguard” — which made its way stateside last month with a launch on Netflix — ended the show’s six-episode run totally spent. But you probably would be too if you were a Ptsd-plagued war vet turned Specialist Protection Officer for London’s Metropolitan Police Service, tasked with protecting Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) — before she was blown up in a terrorist attack.
Madden told TheWrap in a recent interview that Budd — who finds out in the finale that the person behind all of this was a woman who he underestimated in the first moments of the premiere — deserves to unwind if the show gets renewed for a second season.

Political conspiracy thriller “Bodyguard” is Britain’s biggest TV hit in years, and it’s easy to see why. With Jed Mercurio’s suspenseful story and mesmerizing performances by Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes, it’s an intoxicating and addictive television cocktail. Ten minutes in, and viewers will want to binge all six hours of the new Netflix-distributed series that examines how the London corridors of power grapple with the increased threat of terrorism.
This is not a remake of the 1992 Whitney Houston-Kevin Costner thriller “The Bodyguard,” although it does feature a hardened private security specialist David Budd (Madden) assigned to protect a high-profile woman, who in this case is the implacable Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes). Both are accustomed to taking charge and forge a wary professional alliance that eventually crosses into the personal.

The finale of BBC series “Bodyguard” was the most-watched drama in the U.K. since current records began, and the box-set on the iPlayer is the most popular ever on the pubcaster’s catchup service. Netflix invested in the series and will launch it internationally this week
The series launched strongly in the U.K., where it was the most-watched freshman drama for a decade. It stars Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) as David Budd, a war veteran-turned-cop who is assigned to protect a senior politician, Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes.
In Britain, the series closer was watched by 17.1 million, the 28-day consolidated numbers show. The number of iPlayer requests for the show is currently at 38 million.
“’Bodyguard’ continues to smash records and thrill new audiences every day via the boxset,” said BBC programming chief Charlotte Moore.

Netflix has released the first trailer for a great looking series called Bodyguard. The series stars Richard Madden (Robb Stark from Game of Thrones) as a secret service agent who is assigned to protect someone with political views he doesn’t agree with. This is the same actor who is said to be up for the role of James Bond after Daniel Craig is done, so this trailer will kind of give you an idea of what that might be like.
The series was already released in the UK where it was a big hit. I love what I’m seeing in this first trailer and I’ll definitely be binge-watching it when it’s released. The series comes with a compelling premise and some intense action. What’s there not to be excited about!? Here’s the synopsis:

After finding huge success in the United Kingdom, Bodyguard will make its way stateside on October 24 when it debuts on Netflix. The new trailer for the political thriller dropped today and features a wild amount of tensions rising between Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes.
Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic, but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?
The series also stars Gina McKee (Line of Duty), Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Pippa Haywood (Scott & Bailey...

Earlier this year, the BBC’s “Bodyguard” was a ratings sensation in the United Kingdom, with its finale garnering some 10.4 million viewers, higher ratings than any British broadcast short of the World Cup.
As the series arrives stateside on Netflix, it’s not hard to see why. The thriller star “Game of Thrones” alumnus Richard Madden as a security officer and military veteran who enters the series with no small amount of trauma and only builds up more scar tissue as it goes. Both juicy in its delving into character psychology and rippingly ready to tear up its playbook as it goes, it’s a six-episode ride that demands, and rewards, a quick binge, and one that is as likely as any of Netflix’s overseas imports to find a breakout audience.

The BBC drama “Bodyguard” bowed out on a high Sunday with 11 million viewers at its peak on BBC One, for a whopping 47.9% audience share. The six-part series, which Netflix is about to launch globally, is Britain’s most popular drama since “Downton Abbey.”
Starring Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Keeley Hawes (“The Durrells”), “Bodyguard” went out the gate strongly in the U.K., where it was the biggest launch for a scripted series in more than a decade.
Aside from soccer, the ratings for Sunday night’s finale make it the most-watched program of 2018 in Britain. It was the biggest drama across all channels since an episode of “Downton Abbey” on ITV in November 2011. For the BBC, it was the biggest drama since its Christmas Day episode of “Doctor Who” in 2008.

“Bodyguard” is going global with Netflix. It has set ratings alight in the U.K., where it airs on the BBC and is the biggest new drama series for a decade, and will now launch internationally on the Svod platform.
The drama starring Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Keeley Hawes (“The Missing”) is made by ITV-owned shingle World Productions. Madden plays David Budd, a war veteran-turned-cop, assigned to protect a senior politician, Julia Montague, played by Hawes.
The opening episode on flagship channel BBC One won a 40.9% share and generated a huge consolidated viewing figure of 10.4 million. In the coveted 16-34 demographic, it won 1.2 million viewers. That made it the biggest drama launch on any network in recent memory in Britain.
Viewers have stuck with the series. The most recent installment, the fifth, went out Sunday and garnered an overnight rating of 8 million and a 38.2% peak share. Those...

Exclusive: Breakout new BBC One drama Bodyguard is headed to Netflix. The streaming network will carry the terror thriller starring Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden and Line of Duty’s Keeley Hawes outside of the UK and Ireland (and China where Netflix is not available). The series’ Netflix premiere is set for October 24.
The deal for Bodyguard, produced by World Productions, an ITV Studios company, was made through Netflix’s co-licensing team. The digital platform has been a partner since the show’s early production stages.
Under its co-licensing model, Netflix is collaborating with U.S. studios and international production companies on series that air on other linear or digital networks. Netflix takes first-run global distribution in as many territories as available, coming in as a partner on projects that are going to series at a finished script or pilot stage and as early as script development.

Jed Mercurio, creator of BBC breakout drama Bodyguard, is eyeing a second season of the terror thriller after stellar opening ratings and an endorsement from former Home Secretary Amber Rudd.
The six-part drama, which stars Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes, opened with 6.7M (35%) overnight viewers for its first episode and remained steady at 6.4M (30%) for its second episode.
The World Productions thriller is set in and around the corridors of power and tells the story of a heroic but volatile war veteran assigned to protect the Home Secretary whose politics run contrary to his own.
Rudd, writing in the Sunday Times, said Hawes portrayal of Home Secretary was “fierce” and “unapologetic”. “She has the hard side you need to smash a glass ceiling, but is able to turn on a personable, credible approach where necessary,” she added.
Mercurio responded by thanking Rudd...
