The release of Red, White & Royal Blue has apparently prompted quite a bit of fanfare.
The romantic comedy, which is an adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, launched on Prime Video on August 11 and has now become the No. 1 movie globally on Prime Video in its premiere weekend.
It is also now among Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time, according to Amazon, which wouldn’t disclose the two other films Red, White & Royal Blue would be joining in the top three.
Amazon is also touting “a huge surge in new Prime membership signups” due to the film’s release. The company didn’t say how they determined this, though this generally measured as the title was the first one an account watched after subscribing to a streaming service.

The “prince of England’s hearts” falls for the American president’s son (or is it the other way around?) in “Red, White & Royal Blue,” an effervescent gay rom-com that might be easily dismissed as a mere trifle, were it not for the still-historic novelty of its existence. Arriving less than a year after “Bros,” director Matthew López’s Amazon-backed, R-rated lark goes even further to normalize queer romance on-screen, taking a classic “chick flick” premise — the kind once reserved for Mandy Moore and Amanda Bynes movies, à la “Chasing Liberty” or “What a Girl Wants” — and recasting it with dudes.
Are gay men the target audience? No question, although “Red, White & Royal Blue” (adapted from the book by Casey McQuiston) reminded me more of that surprising subsection of manga known as “yaoi” — or “boys’ love” comics — marketed primarily to young female readers. These stories, which typically feature slender,...

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Red, White & Royal Blue shares very little with first-time director Matthew López’s Tony-winning play The Inheritance. Both works address the social mores of young gay men from disparate backgrounds in the wake of a crisis, but where the characters in López’s career-defining play are processing the traumas of AIDS, the biggest hiccup in the lives of the film’s characters turns out to be a destroyed wedding cake.
No shade. Not every piece of art about gay desire needs to be rooted in trauma and internalized shame, and López’s film boasts a handful of sex scenes—between Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the American president, and England’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine)—that will surely satisfy anyone who’s horny for representation. But everything around those scenes—the histrionic scenarios, the Sorkin-esque political idealism, the Gen Z-pandering internet humor—is too limp...

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the comedy ‘Red, White and Royal Blue.’
Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: Stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity … and total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

Romance is getting the royal touch in the first trailer for the long-awaited adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s book “Red, White, & Royal Blue.”
The trailer certainly makes a point of laying out the various peaks and valleys of the plot, introducing Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman) and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). After an international incident involving a wedding cake happens the two are forced to engage in a staged friendship. But the more time they spend together the pair realizes that what started as animosity is turning to love.
The bright, colorful tone, coupled with its adaptation bona fides makes it look akin to other Prime Video fare like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” There’s also a healthy dose of 1953’s “Roman Holiday,” especially with this film’s emphasis on a royal deciding between love...

If only the British royals and America’s first family became one. Such is the premise of the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel “Red, White & Royal Blue.”
The R-rated queer rom-com stars Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex, the president’s son, who can’t stand Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). Their long-running feud threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations, but after being forced to stage a truce, sparks fly. Add in Uma Thurman as the President of the United States, and Prime Video’s “Red, White & Royal Blue” has the makings of a campy summer blockbuster.

The hearts of two nations collide in the first look at Prime Video’s adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 young adult LGBTQ romance Red, White & Royal Blue.
Co-written by Ted Malawer and Tony-winner Matthew López, the upcoming summer rom-com serves as López’s directorial debut and sees stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine portray the sons of U.S. and U.K. leaders, unexpectedly falling in love before grappling with the international implications of their relationship.
In the nearly two-minute first look, Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Galitzine) discover that despite having so much in common — stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity — they can’t quite escape their total disdain for one another.
But when an international incident makes headlines following their long-running feud, the two are forced to salvage the image of their respective country’s relations.

In the last 404 years, “Romeo and Juliet” hasn’t become the world’s most famous piece of theater by staying static. A pair of productions from this past spring that prove not even four centuries’ worth of iterations have exhausted the possibilities.
Simon Godwin, who worked alongside co-director and writer Emily Burns at the helm of the mid-lockdown film “Romeo & Juliet” starring Josh O’Connor and Jessie Buckley in the title roles, has long recognized not just the inherent advantages but the necessity of reshaping Shakespeare.
“I find him to be a super empowering writer. We’ve both really broken free from a kind of reverence into an irreverence, which I think is more Shakespearean than than being loyal. In a way, you’re loyal by being disloyal,” Godwin said. “I think we’ve all been asking ourselves over the last few months, ‘What reality am I in? Am I in a dream?...

Renee Zellweger’s thriller What/If has moved to the top of Netflix’s latest UK top ten list, while rom-com feature Always Be My Maybe and mini-series When They See Us have also crashed into the most-watched titles.
It marks Netflix’s fifth most-watched list in the UK with the Svod service running the experiment on a weekly basis.
Last week, after its launch, the erotic thriller What/If popped in at fourth. The show stars Zellweger as a mysterious and manipulative businesswoman with a secret. Written by Mike Kelley, the Warner Bros Television-produced series explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Jane Levy, Blake Jenner, Samantha Ware, Keith Powers, Daniella Pineda, Juan Castano, John Clarence, Dave Annable and Louis Herthum co-star.
Elsewhere, Gavin & Stacey crashed into the most-watched series after the news that James Corden was bringing back the BBC sitcom for a Christmas special.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the ending of “What / If” Season 1, streaming now on Netflix.]
What if the ending to “What / If” was bad? Not in the “so bad it’s good” way that drives the first season to juicy, melodramatic glory, but the normal kind of bad, where expectations aren’t met, disappointment ensues, and enraged fans take to the internet demanding a remake. Doubt hung over the middle of the season like the stubborn cloud casting permanent blackness over Imogen’s offices. After getting so caught up in Mike Kelley’s throwback thriller, what if all that time watching was for naught? What if the payoff couldn’t match the buildup? What if “What / If” was just another twisty bit of fun that ran out of gas at the finish?
Those who’ve made it through the 10 episodes know this not to be the case. Benefitting from an anthology structure that allowed for a fixed ending, “What / If” came to a dramatic,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “What/If,” streaming now on Netflix.
Writer and executive producer Mike Kelley’s latest piece of dramatic storytelling is a limited series morality tale that starts with a high-powered, wealthy woman named Anne Montgomery (Renee Zellweger) offering Lisa, a young woman with a startup (Jane Levy), the investment she needs — if she gives her one night with her husband Sean (Blake Jenner). What goes on during that evening will be protected by a non-disclosure agreement, and if he breaks the terms and shares the details, Anne will take control of the company. But that is just the tip of the iceberg for “What/If.”
While Kelley says the 1993 film “Indecent Proposal” was very much his “jumping off point” for this story, he was inspired by other “social thrillers” of the 1980s and 1990s, including “Fatal Attraction.” Borrowing from a traditional film’s structure,...

In the first trailer for the upcoming Netflix series - which is billed as a"neo-noir social thriller [that] explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things" - we're introduced to cash-strapped San Francisco newlyweds Lisa and Sean (Jane Levy and Blake Jenner) who are made an offer by Zellweger's character, Anne.
"Now that you're on the brink of greatness, are there still limitations on what you'd be willing to sacrifice?" Anne seductively asks Lisa, as her husband looks on. "In this case, a night alone with your husband. Would that be an acceptable condition of a firm offer to finance your company?"
From there Anne's mysterious (and dubious) offer presumably spins out of control. Judging...

Renée Zellweger is not to be messed with in the newest trailer for Netflix’s What/If — but Jane Levy’s going to mess with her, anyway.
The actresses are at the center of the forthcoming “neo-noir social thriller,” which stars Zellweger as a mysterious woman who makes a lucrative, but dubious, offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds. Per the official synopsis, the show will explore “the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things.”

In the new trailer for Netflix’s neo-noir social thriller, “What/If,” Renée Zellweger shoots an arrow at Jane Levy’s head — and misses, thankfully — but that’s maybe the least insane thing that happens in the two-minute, 27-second preview for the upcoming show that “explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things.”
Per Netflix, the first season of “What/If” focuses on a mysterious woman’s (Zellweger) lucrative, but dubious offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds.
Watch the trailer above to see just how dubious that all gets as multiple people are playing with fire here in Zellweger’s character’s very dangerous game.

Renée Zellweger has the power to make all of your desires come true in her latest role.
The Oscar-winning actress will lead the cast of Netflix drama, What/If, and the first teaser is very reminiscent of ABC's Revenge.
Given that the series comes from Revenge creator, Mike Kelley, there's a good chance this could be the deliciously soapy drama missing from our lives since that series went off the air.
The series is set to premiere May 24, but the first teaser doesn't exactly shed much light on what it's about, aside from the fact that Zellweger's character will be pulling the strings.

Netflix has released a teaser for its upcoming anthology series “What/If” — and from the looks of it, everyone is just a pawn in Renée Zellweger’s chess game.
“What if I made you an offer too extraordinary to refuse?” Zellweger says in the teaser. “For anything, and anyone, to be yours for the taking. The players are all arranged. What would you risk for a chance to have it all?”
She’s later shown dangling a pawn and then dropping it, revealing a board of toppled-over chess pieces.
Premiering May 24, “What/If” stars Zellweger as Anne, described as a mysterious woman who makes a lucrative but dubious offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds. The 10-episode neo-noir social thriller explores what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things, with each season looking at a different tale of morality, per Netflix.
