Netflix stuck the landing on a star-studded exhibition match between tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz this weekend. Stakes were high on the court, but the Las Vegas showdown was most effective as a lush advertisement for the streamer as a fledgling live sports destination.
Taking over the Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena, the inaugural Netflix Slam pit legend Nadal against 20-year-old Alcaraz. Rafa, as Nadal is affectionately known to millions of global fans, had not played since a hip injury flared up in 2023. Nadal has only faced Alcaraz a handful of times in his career and wound up losing to the prodigy in a nail-biting tie break.
No one really lost, though. Least of all Netflix. Branding was so pervasive in the hotel and casino that pedestrians lined up 100 deep to take photos in front of a “Netflix Slam” sign, installed on a massive wall of tennis balls.

“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. Well, that’s gotta hurt.
The National Football League isn’t officially saying anything yet, but the league just suffered a major loss – and we’re not talking about the woeful end of Bill Belichick’s reign at the New England Patriots.
Failing to get the nearly decade long antitrust lawsuit over the lucrative Sunday Ticket package thrown out of court, the Roger Goodell-run NFL is going to trial for potentially $6.1 billion just over a week after this year’s Super Bowl.
Rejecting the NFL’s request to dump the case, U.S. District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez on January 11 ordered the trial over non-competitive practices by the NFL to begin on February 22, to be specific.
Literally and figuratively, the only game in town for the NFL, the trial is expected to last about six weeks. If the NFL loses the case, big part of the blast radius of...

When infamous conspiracy theorist Alex Jones recorded a video last week saying he hoped Elon Musk would watch an interview he gave to Tucker Carlson, it was clear what he wanted most of all: a comeback.

Roger Goodell has signed a contract extension with the NFL.
The NFL commissioner has signed a new deal that will keep him at the helm of the league through March 2027. The announcement was made as the NFL owners meet in New York this week.
“The Compensation Committee updated the full ownership today that an agreement has been reached to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract for three years, through March 2027,” the league said in a statement Wednesday.
Goodell has made the league’s media partnerships a top priority, as he detailed in a Sept. 6 cover story for The Hollywood Reporter.
The NFL inked rich media deals with NBCUniversal, Paramount, Fox, ESPN and Amazon in 2021 worth more than $110 billion, an extraordinary number that reset the standard for sports rights. But it also shifted more games to streaming, a strategic move to make them more accessible to cord-cutters.

Spike Lee is among those upset about Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner’s recent controversial choice to leave women and Black musicians out of his new book The Masters.
During a wide-ranging interview with Lee at the 2023 New Yorker Festival on Saturday, New Yorker editor David Remnick recalled how a few weeks ago the pair were talking and Lee was “exercised” about the Wenner controversy.
“It is just emblematic of how often Black people, brown people, colored people are overlooked for their genius, for their skill, hard work,” Lee said during the New Yorker Festival talk.
When reminded that Wenner had explained these omissions, in an interview with The New York Times that seemed to kickstart the backlash against the Rolling Stone co-founder, by saying that no female or Black artists were “articulate” enough to be included, Lee suggested that may have been particularly what he was irritated about.

Perhaps it was inevitable that Miss Americana herself would end up in an almost-confirmed relationship with a star of that most American sport — and a reigning champion, no less.

The pop icon — who fills stadiums so easily she reportedly turned down an invitation to headline the next Super Bowl halftime show — created a different sort of media spectacle at a regular-season NFL game,...

Fall Out Boy hit the stage during the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night to perform their updated version of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
The rock group released the song earlier this summer, writing new lyrics for Joel’s iconic hit song, which included references to significant events that happened from the years 1949 to 1989, including everything from the Cold War to the cola wars and Joseph Stalin to John F. Kennedy.
Fall Out Boy’s version covers the years from 1989 to 2023 and references Iron Man, MIchael Phelps, Taylor Swift, Colin Kaepernick, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, MySpace and the deaths of George Floyd, Prince and Queen Elizabeth, among other topics.
Bebe Rexha introduced the band at the VMAs, which are airing live from New Jersey’s Prudential Center. During the show, Fall Out Boy — decked out in suits — performed outside the arena on a stage filled with flames.

Turning any popular book into a movie is a minefield. Being too faithful can result in an overstuffed mess. Too unfaithful, you risk alienating a built-in fandom. But even greater consideration has to be given when adapting a nonfiction book into a narrative film. In cases like “Nomadland,” “Capote,” and the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” filmmakers toed that line by showing us their books’ factual cores through the eyes of dramatic protagonists.
On the flip side of the equation is “Origin,” Ava DuVernay’s awkward and ungainly new adaptation of the 2020 bestseller “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. The misguided film comes across as a twisted sibling of “Eat Pray Love,” in which the book’s author becomes the film’s protagonist leading us on a world tour of historical atrocities.

The origins of the NFL’s streaming business can be traced, in part, to a party at Bill Gates’ house outside of Seattle several years ago. The event was timed to a summit that Microsoft was hosting, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recalls chatting with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos there. “I was just talking about our content and what it could do for their technology,” Goodell says, noting that he felt the NFL could help Amazon build its advertising business and Prime Video subscription service. “I distinctly remember, he was wearing sunglasses and he put them down on the end of his nose,” Goodell adds. “And he said, ‘Now you’ve got my attention.’ ”

Shelter is the newest addition to the on-screen Harlan Coben Universe. A Young Adult-skewing eight-part thriller, it’s the story of high schooler Mickey Bolitar, who’s recently moved from overseas to his dad’s hometown of Kasselton, New Jersey, where he and his new friends investigate the disappearance of a fellow student. Like any Harlan Coben series, it takes place in a heightened world peopled by memorable villains, shock twists, cliff-hangers, and mysteries that change shape multiple times before they’re solved.
Mickey Bolitar is the star of three novels by Coben – a spin-off trilogy from his hit 11-part book series about Mickey’s uncle Myron Bolitar. Netflix has the rights to that character, so don’t expect to find an actor playing him in the cast rundown below. Here’s more on the actors telling this story.

Bethenny Frankel has enlisted two of the most high-profile attorneys in Hollywood to help in her self-proclaimed fight to help protect reality stars from what she says is exploitation by networks and studios.
Power players Bryan Freedman and Mark Geragos are now working alongside Frankel to investigate the treatment of reality stars.
Freedman tells me that he has heard from roughly 50 reality show cast members from various docuseries and competition shows who believe that they were “used and unfairly” treated by television networks and streamers.

Frankel’s quest comes amid the writers and actors strike that has effectively shut down Hollywood. Legendary Olympic athlete Michael Johnson has called on sporting brands to support athletes who want to speak out about social change and other issues meaningful to them.
In an impassioned speech, given without notes, at the Cannes Lions international advertising festival, Johnson celebrated the modern era where athletes are more outspoken and pushing back “on the idea that they should just shut up and dribble.”

Rihanna made headlines in 2019 when she rejected the NFL’s invitation to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show to show solidarity with quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Four years later, the Barbadian singer performed at the 2023 Super Bowl Lvii halftime show, with many wondering what changed since then. In a recent interview, Rihanna answered why she had a change of heart.

Rihanna has explained why she decided to perform at this year’s Super Bowl after she turned down the opportunity nearly four years ago.
The “Umbrella” singer famously refused the NFL’s invitation to perform the 2019 halftime show in solidarity with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
In 2016, Kaepernick introduced the concept of taking a knee while the US national anthem was sung in protest of racial justice and police brutality – a concept that the NFL sought to squash.
“There’s still a lot of mending to be done in my eyes,” Rihanna told British Vogue in her first interview since the Super Bowl, “but it’s powerful to break those doors, and have representation at such a high, high level and a consistent level.
“Two Super Bowls back-to-back,” she said, referring to last year’s headliners, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J Blige and Kendrick Lamar, “you know, representing the urban community,...

Fresh off a Super Bowl Lvii halftime performance that commanded nearly 120 million live television viewers, Rihanna is on the cover of British Vogue‘s March issue with her partner Aap Rocky as they publicly debut their 9-month-old son.
In an interview with Giles Hattersley, the nine-time Grammy Award winner — and Golden Globe and Oscar nominee in the best original song category for “Lift Me Up,” the lead single from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack — spoke at length for the first time about motherhood, how her political stance toward the NFL has shifted, and the fears behind her absence from music as fans await the release of what will be her ninth studio album, following 2016’s Anti.

Rihanna's highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime performance came and went on Feb. 12, but it left an impact, especially considering the superstar used the performance to announce her second pregnancy to the world. In her Feb. 15 interview with British Vogue, Rihanna unpacked exactly why she accepted the big gig after years of turning down the NFL's halftime show offer.
"There's still a lot of mending to be done in my eyes," Rihanna said about the NFL's treatment of Colin Kaepernick after his peaceful on-field protest against police brutality during the 2016 season. "But it's powerful to break those doors, and have representation at such a high, high level and a consistent level. Two Super Bowls back-to-back representing the urban community, globally. It is powerful. It sends a really strong message."

Jahm Najafi, the Iranian-American billionaire who owns STX Entertainment, is reportedly preparing a 3.75B bid to acquire Premiere League club Tottenham Hotspur.
The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that Najafi, chair Msp Sports Capital, is working with a consortium of investors with a view to approaching Spurs with a formal bid in the coming weeks.
The Ft said the acquisition effort would value Tottenham at 3B, with 750M of debt being added to the club’s books. Msp will be responsible for 70 of the bid, while the remaining 30 will be put forward by backers in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere in the Middle East.
Deadline has approached Msp for comment.
Tottenham is currently owned by British billionaire Joe Lewis, with Daniel Levy serving as the team’s chairman. Spurs’ lack of trophies means there is unrest among supporters about the club’s ownership, with supporters actively chanting for Levy’s resignation during matches.

After a seven-year hiatus from the stage, Rihanna pulled off a trailblazing Super Bowl halftime performance that represented the woman she is now - a mother, a business mogul, and an international pop superstar. Much happened during the iconic performance, in which Rihanna boldly announced her pregnancy; confidently touted her own brand; and stayed true to her Caribbean roots all at once. It was an exuberant celebration of a woman doing what she wanted, on her own terms.
At a press conference leading up to the show, the nine-time Grammy winner said her goal in performing was to represent her native country, immigrants, and Black women everywhere. "To go on the biggest stage in seven years, there's something thrilling about the challenge of it all," she said. "It's important for the representation and it's important for my son to see that," she added, referencing her first son with rapper Aap Rocky,...

“All I see is dollar signs,” sings Rihanna, strutting along a catwalk stretching the length of a football stadium while hundreds of dancers, wearing the skimpiest white ski jackets a designer could envisage, gyrate hurriedly out of her path. Well quite.
Roughly six minutes ago, an American football game was under way. Now one of the world’s biggest pop stars is descending from a vast string of floating platforms resembling a stairway from heaven to blast through a 12-minute medley of monster hits in her first public performance in five years. Frankly, 200 million viewers worldwide are somewhat blinded by the cash too.
With a budget often topping 10 million, the Super Bowl halftime show is the instant coffee of stadium gig extravaganzas – the greatest show on earth that you can throw up in just six minutes. And Rihanna’s show reveals a natural honing of the spectacle. An event that...

No costume changes. No guests joining her onstage. No curveball surprises in her set list. Not even Tom Holland showing up for “Umbrella.” Nothing except Rihanna being a boss and a half on her flying stage, reigning supreme at her Super Bowl halftime show and crushing every possible prediction about how she would handle her first public performance in more than five years. Just the way she began with “Bitch Better Have My Money” was a statement in itself. She’s baaaack.

Rihanna hasn’t toured since 2016, but on Sunday during the Jay Z-produced spectacle that is the Super Bowl Lvii Halftime Show the Good Girl Gone Bad singer put on a tour de force.
Filling her less-than-15-minute set with an array of hits, floating platforms, club dance floor dynamics and spectacle, the second best-selling female artist of all time owned the field at State Farm Stadium with near pure superstar swagger.
Pushing the high-profile slot to new technological and Olympian heights, Rihanna was pure solo. With a catalog full of work with the likes of the aforementioned Jay-Z, Eminem and Drake over the decades, the “Umbrella” singer teased guest stars earlier this week, but it was all hype because when it came showtime, Rihanna did the job all on her own with only a legion of dancers as sidekicks in a performance that was totally 2023.

Receiving an invitation to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show is an honor for any performer. And in 2023, Rihanna will take the stage for the first time, though it wasn’t the first time the NFL asked her.
Under the right circumstances, it can be lucrative to appear, even though stars don’t get a check from the league. An energetic halftime performance could open the door to other avenues of income, though.
In the show’s history, few icons have grabbed a spot on the coveted halftime stage more than once. And only two have appeared more than twice.

After nearly a decade of evasion and hefty scores in the fashion-beauty industry, Rihanna is returning to the music scene this Sunday at the Super Bowl in what is probably the most anticipated Halftime Show of all time. The nine-time Grammy winner said in a February 9 Apple Music interview that fans can expect no less than the most meticulously selected glimpses into her career, and of course, an anthem to black womanhood and her Caribbean roots.
The Super Bowl is famous for headlining some of music’s biggest names, and past artists to take the stage include Beyonce, Lady Gaga and The Weeknd. The stakes are high, especially given what fans described as an agonizing absence by Rihanna, but the budgets might be even higher — though the game does not pay artists a dime to perform, it does cover all production costs, which can run up to millions of dollars per show.

Rihanna admits when she got the call to headline this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, she thought twice about the opportunity: “I was like, ‘You sure? I’m three months postpartum. Should I be making major decisions like this right now? I might regret this.”
But the singer said becoming a mom gave her the energy to take on the big event, especially with her 9-month-old son watching on.
“When you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world — you can do anything. And the Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world, so as scary as that was … there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all,” she said. “It’s important for my son to see that.”
The Grammy-winning star said it was also important for her to perform on one of...

Entertainment companies like Disney find themselves in a challenging situation. They need to invest in new and growing platforms like Disney+ and Hulu, while continuing to keep the linear lineups of networks like National Geographic and ABC filled.
To help fill that gap, they have increasingly turned to new, in-house documentary studios, meant to help keep lineups fresh, and to funnel original docs to streaming services.
ABC News launched its effort, ABC News Studios, last year. That initial slate included 4 films and 15 docuseries, including a spinoff of Nightline and projects from Good Morning America anchor George Stephanopoulos, among others.
A source close to the division tells The Hollywood Reporter that it is already profitable, feeding a pipeline of feature films and docuseries to ABC, Disney+, Hulu, Nat Geo, and other platforms.

Rihanna‘s most recent album release was in 2016 when she dropped her beloved eighth studio album Anti. Fans have been clamoring for her next album since then to no avail, as the Barbados-bred beauty has focused on building her Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin brands and Savage X Fenty lingerie line. But Rih is ready to take the stage for the first time in years at the Super Bowl Lvii halftime show, and ahead of her performance, Anti has already earned some new accolades.

Rihanna’s album Anti marked a shift in how Rihanna approached her music career. For the better part of a decade, she churned out hit after hit and album after album every year. After the release of her 2012 album Unapologetic, Rihanna slowed down her output and began focusing more on the music.

There’s little logic when it comes to fandom. Some of it stems from personal taste or geographic proximity or sentimental nostalgia — or some combination of the three — and some of it is truly the stuff of magic. All of which is to say that the premise of “80 For Brady,” a new star-dense comedy that imagines four octogenarians as diehard Tom Brady fans doesn’t exactly strain plausibility. The heart wants what the heart wants, even if it’s for the Patriots to go all the way.
The titular “80 For Brady” are based on a real set of Boston-based octogenarians, brought to life in the film by Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field. Their story caught the eyes of screenwriters Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (“Booksmart”), who recognized the inherent comedy and affection to such a relationship between women. “80 For Brady” is also the...
