Between starring in Shakespeare productions and Hollywood blockbusters, Kenneth Branagh makes time for his favorite hobbies, like reading historical biographies and spending time with his dog.
“I love walking my dog,” the Murder on the Orient Express star and director tells People in this week’s issue. “I have a little Jack Russell who runs my life. I talk to him; I train him.”
The five-time Oscar nominee, 56, also favors an additional form of exercise besides walking with his pup. “I’m a man of certain age who’s come to enjoy yoga,” he says. “I came to it later in life,...

We took an unexpected pre-election and then post-election day break, but the 4 Quadrant podcast is back. This week we’re joined once again by Nigel Smith where we discuss the still very unsettled Best Picture race and play a game of “chance or no chance” regarding this year’s Best Actor field. And you may be surprised about which “lock” we disagree over.
You can listen to this week’s episode on Soundcloud below or on iTunes.

Every once and awhile 4 Quadrant will break from awards season and take a deep dive into another corner of the pop culture universe. No, don’t worry. You’ll still get a healthy dose of Oscar and awards season talk with this week’s special guest, Nigel Smith of The Guardian and formerly of Indiewire. However, for the fifth episode of 4 Quadrant you can also expect a very extended chat about the greatest reality competition show on television.

Unveils 'Superman vs. Batman: Dawn of Justice' (Trailer) We saw a lot of media emerge from the cavernous depths of the San Diego Convention Center last weekend, but only one trailer could truly claim to have been born in the darkness. We're talking, of course, about Zack Snyder's Mega-Superhero-Epic "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice." What you may not glean from the title, however, is that the movie is about Batman versus Superman and in the trailer there is a lot of Batman versus Superman. Former Indiewire Managing Editor Nigel Smith wrote an article critiquing the trailer in The Guardian this week, remarking: "The Comic-Con trailer is impressively mounted and resoundingly loud, but what it doesn’t appear to be is confident in its own product. By showcasing so much of the action close to a year before the full feature opens in cinemas,...

Indiewire's Eric Kohn and Nigel Smith and I debate the winners and losers at Cannes, and who will do well with the jury here, not to mention the Academy later on. Clearly, we do not always agree, particularly on "Sicario" and "Louder than Bombs." What's heading for a longer life via Cannes jury prizes and/or the fall fest circuit and later awards contention? From director Nick Sandow (who plays Caputo in "Orange Is the New Black"), "The Wannabe" is a crime drama centered on the 1992 John Gotti trial. What to do with the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, many of whom have not been charged with any crimes, or are being tried via secret trials, is still a political hot button. But writer/director Peter Sattler's "Camp X-Ray" approaches the issue from a different angle, rather than as a straight polemic. Starring Kristen Stewart, Peyman Moaadi, and John Carroll Lynch, the film follows a young U.S. soldier who goes from her small town to the surreal world of the notorious detention center. While there, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with one of the detainees. So yes, there's a lot to chew on here, but a recent 42-minute talk with Stewart and Sattler at the Apple Soho Store, hosted by Indiewire's Nigel Smith, finds them diving into the characters, political commentary, and more that "Camp X-Ray" tackles. Director-star Ryan Piers Williams of the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival hit "X/Y" drama sat down with Indiewire's Nigel Smith to speak about his latest feature. Their conversation, which included co-star and real-life wife America Ferrera and actor Jon Paul Phillips, is part of a series of talks hosted at two Apple Store locations. "X/Y" follows the sexually-charged relationships between four different New Yorkers. Amber Tamblyn and Melonie Diaz also star. Considering the often racy subject material, Smith asked Williams about the experience being intimate on screen with Ferrera. "It was fine for us, you know, we're married," Williams said. "So obviously we've had sex before." Williams also added that being naked on set was part of his process. In addition to the sex talk, Smith also asked the director and cast for advice for those aspiring to get into the industry. "Don't ever expect it to be easy," Ferrera warned.

Chicago – Amiable charm compensates for scattershot laughs in Ryan O’Nan’s directorial debut, “Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best.” There’s an undercurrent of tangible warmth that reverberates beneath O’Nan’s awkward assemblage of quirky gags and self-consciously clever dialogue. Though I spent much of the film on the fence, it eventually won me over.
There are few things more thrilling to watch in a film than two strangers connecting through their shared passion for music. That’s what happened in John Carney’s 2006 masterpiece, “Once,” as Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová brilliantly portrayed the spontaneity of an unrehearsed musical performance—allowing the Oscar-winning tune, “Falling Slowly,” to organically unfold before the audience like a blooming flower.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0
A similar sort of magic occurs about a half-hour into “Brooklyn Brothers,” as mismatched duo Alex (O’Nan) and Jim (Michael Weston) start to perform a tune while driving to their next gig.
