Mason Richards is the recipient of the 2012 Sony Pictures Diversity
Fellowship given to one promising young filmmaker with the potential to
impact the film industry through diverse, new films from a new
perspective.
Mason earned his MFA in Film Directing from Cal Arts where he wrote and directed several narrative short films including his thesis, The Seawall, which had its world premiere at the 2011 Festival de Cannes and has gone on to screen at several festivals around the world. The Seawall was shot entirely on location in Guyana, South America, where Mason was born and spent the early years of his life.
Mason's passion for the arts started in his teens while growing up in Brooklyn where he worked as a professional actor in the New York City theater scene. He directed his first play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf during his freshman year at Vanderbilt University while earning his undergraduate degrees (BA English, BS Human Development) the production received rave reviews and marked Mason's transition from being onstage to offstage and ultimately behind the camera.
Most recently, Mason wrapped production of his Film Independent Project: Involve produced short film Garcia's Guest which he also wrote and directed. Moving forward, Mason plans to make his feature film directorial debut with a screenplay adaptation of a Simon & Schuster published novel.
Mason splits his time between Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles.
