Exclusive: With the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike underway, and guilds around the world expressing solidarity, issues surrounding writers and the way they’re compensated have become front and center of a global conversation.
But Datta Dave, co-founder of Mumbai and Los Angeles-based agency Tulsea, whose clients include Sudip Sharma, Puneet Krishna and Shonali Bose, points out that while the WGA is dealing with important issues, they’re also “mature market issues” – or to be less polite, first world problems – as conditions for writers in developing markets are way behind even the basic rights that the WGA and other guilds have secured in the West.
“Over here we’re still at the stage where we’re asking for writers to get a credit on a billboard,” Dave says. “And while Hollywood might say writers don’t always get a credit on a billboard, the pendulum has swung so far...

ReviewThe second season is simply 10 more episodes of abundant violence, sexual innuendo, toxic masculinity, father-son wars and power struggles. Saraswati DatarThere is a word that is unique to the Indian vocabulary when it comes to describing an activity that is neither particularly great nor too bad -- timepass. That is perhaps the best way one can describe watching Mirzapur 2, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is entertaining in parts, has some great performances from its lead players, and has definitely been produced on a more generous budget than the previous season. However, ultimately, the second season is simply 10 more episodes of abundant violence, sexual innuendo, toxic masculinity, father-son wars and power struggles. The proceedings begin a couple of weeks after the blood-soaked finale of Season 1, where the troubled heir Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu) killed Bablu (Vikrant Massey) as per the plan, and Sweety (Shriya Pilgaonkar) becomes collateral damage. Guddu (Ali Fazal...

Mumbai, Oct 16 (Ians) Actress Shweta Tripathi Sharma feels the popular crime drama Mirzapur has broken her girl-next-door image.
"My main reason to do 'Mirzapur' was that I wanted to be seen as a credible actor more than a cute heroine. The world and the character was so far away, which is what drew me to this show. After 'Haramkhor', in which I played a teenager, I became synonymous with these young cutesy parts. But a performer has to be able to do all sorts of things. I consciously made a choice to do stories and films where I am not playing a soft part," she shared.
In "Mirzapur", she plays the role of Golu Gupta. In the upcoming season, she will be seen as a headstrong girl.

Actor Pankaj Tripathi was pleasantly surprised to see fans of the popular web series Mirzapur in the UK.
"I was shooting in Glasgow in the UK for '83'. During the shoot, people gathered around the location, and I used to think to myself, maybe it is because they are excited to see an Indian film shoot happening." The crowd, he recalled, consisted of Indians as well as foreigners.
"After wrapping up the shoot when I used to get a chance to meet them, they would only have one question to ask -- 'Kaleen Bhaiya, when will you be back on screen?'" he recalled, referring to his character from the series.
"I was shocked to see the massive fandom of 'Mirzapur' that has made its way to the UK. While I was shooting for other projects too, crew members and people all around still crazed out about 'Mirzapur',...

While most actors have a long wait ahead of them before their next starring role is devoured by audiences, actor Ali Fazal has two major performances coming out: Season 2 of Amazon India Original series “Mirzapur,” streaming Oct. 23, and a feature role in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile,” set for release Dec. 18, pandemic willing.
Fazal broke out internationally in “Furious 7” (2015), before going on to play Abdul to Judi Dench’s Victoria in Stephen Frears’ “Victoria & Abdul” in 2017 — the same year he was chosen as one of the Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch.
In “Death on the Nile,” Fazal plays a character first portrayed by George Kennedy in the 1978 film adaptation, and by David Soul as part of long-running series “Poirot.” His casting continues the recent trend of color-blind casting where an actor’s ethnicity doesn’t necessarily inform the role. “The culture has shifted,...
