Renowned underwater photographer Brian Skerry was in for a big surprise when he went to document the rare behavior of orcas feeding on stingrays for the acclaimed Nat Geo/Disney + series “Secrets of the Whales.” “Here comes this adult female with a stingray hanging out of her mouth,” he recalled during a recent American Cinematheque Zoom conversation with composer Raphaelle Thibaut and “Talk Nerdy” podcaster Cara Santa Maria. “My mind is on overload. I just want to get the shot.”
But he’s heartbroken when she drops the ray. “I’m like ‘Oh, no. I didn’t get it.’ So, I swim down to the bottom, the ray is laying on the bottom of the sandy sea floor. I’m just waiting and kneeling on the bottom. The whale comes out of my right side of my vision and then positions herself directly in front of me with the ray in between us.

“Black-ish” co-stars Anthony Anderson and Marsai Martin found out during Monday’s episode of National Geographic’s “Brain Games” hosted by Keegan Michael Key — and the mind-reading exercise left Anderson utterly mystified.
Watch the exclusive clip from tonight’s episode obtained by TheWrap above.
Using only a series of simple questions secretly whispered into her ear by the world-renowned Israeli mentalist Lior Suchard, Martin was able to correctly guess the name of the first dog Anderson had as a child.

Participant Media‘s network Pivot today announced the pickup of Sky Atlantic’s 12-episode drama series Fortitude starring Stanley Tucci and Michael Gambon. The series became available in the U.S. in December when Starz, which originally had committed to the project, pulled out. Pivot is designed as a younger skewing network than Starz, with its target demo being 18-34. As part of its upfront presentation, Pivot also announced an overhaul of its nightly topical series, TakePart Live. Beginning Monday, May 12, the hour-long late-night program will move to primetime (10 Pm) with a new producer, Michael Davies’ Embassy Row, which is behind Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and AMC’s Talking Dead/Bad. Also undergoing makeover is the hosting team of Jacob Soboroff and Cara Santa Maria, with only Soboroff coming back, joined by Sen. John McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain and comedian Eddie Huang. Pivot also unveiled a development...

As fantastic as the last leg of “Breaking Bad” has been, the final episode — airing Sept 29, if anybody needs to mark the date down on the rock they’re living under — will be grounded in reality. At least according the Rj Mitte. The man who plays Walt Jr. on the AMC meth drama took some time out from enjoying breakfast to sit down with Pivot’s “TakePart Live” on Wednesday to talk with host Cara Santa Maria about, among other things, the series capper. The fact that Pivot, a new network for millennials, is launching Aug. 1, the date MTV hit television in 1981, is purely coincidental. But here’s something that isn’t: The first thing Pivot will air at 6 a.m. Et on Thursday is a video for “Video Killed the Radio Star.”
You may recall that the Buggles’ video was the first one played on MTV 32 years ago. For its update, which celebrates a new generation’s creative power, Pivot recorded independent artists live all over Los Angeles, including Run River North, Goldspot, London Thor, Far and Away, Musical Mammal and Rainbow Jackson.

This is in fact a classic story of human nature coming up against Mother Nature. And guess what, Mother Nature always wins. – Ken Burns
On October 17, 2012, I was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to moderate the National Youth Summit on the Dust Bowl, presented by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History and PBS. The guest of honor was Ken Burns, Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning documentarian. His newest film, The Dust Bowl, chronicles what he calls "the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history."
Joining us on stage was dust bowl survivor Cal Crabill, fifth generation farmer Roy Bardole, Usda research ecologist Deb Peters, and Anson Mills founder Glenn Roberts. With the help of students from around the country, we discussed how learning about the Dust Bowl can contribute to our current understanding of drought and agricultural sustainability. How might we prevent such a catastrophe from occurring in America today?

As an advocate for women in Stem (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, I always enjoy talking about why more women should work in the sciences--and my recent appearance on G4's "Attack of the Show" was no different.
I joined the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick, to discuss the controversy surrounding the "Science: It's A Girl Thing" video released by the European Commission last week (Chris jokingly called it a Katy Perry video). Check out the video above and join the conversation in the comments section below. Talk nerdy to me!

Cara Santa Maria: I'm here today at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and I'm about to go speak with astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. I'm really interested to see what kinds of special treasures he has hiding in his office.
Neil deGrasse Tyson: I've known from long ago that the universe was calling me. If you were one of those annoying adults that said, "Oh, what are you gonna be when you grow up?" I would say "astrophysicist." And then they'd walk away real quickly. [laughter]
Csm: [laughter] I heard that you have this amazing lamp in your office that was built by a brilliant artist. [laughter]
NdGT: [laughter] I have a lamp that I made when I was in seventh grade. When everyone's making, in woodshop, they're making--
Csm: A boat?
NdGT: --birdhouses and boats and things, and there was a lamp project, and I wanted to design my own lamp.

Dear Dr. Carl Sagan,
You captured my imagination when I first read The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark about ten years ago. I was too young to watch the Cosmos series when it originally aired on PBS. Today, thirty years later, your elegant scientific prose remains not only relevant, but unparalleled in its breadth and power to inspire.
As a student of the biological sciences, I was never well versed in astrophysics. Although I find planetary science fascinating, it is far from my forte. I want to devour every book I get my hands on, but I often find myself struggling with even popular astronomy texts. Not so with your writings. Your books are about so much more than what lies beyond the boundaries of our atmosphere. They are about where we come from, why we are here, where we are going, and how beautifully...
