Castle devotes an entire season 8 episode to developing the character of Hayley...
This review contains spoilers.
8.18 Backstabber
This week, Hayley was solidly inducted into the ranks of Castle regulars by getting an episode about her. The purpose of these kinds of episodes is to give us background and real texture to the characters that surround Beckett and Castle. They explain why these characters are who they are—because while Castle has a fine cast, it’s not really an ensemble show. Rick and Kate get character development of one kind or another in almost every episode. But it’s hard to really learn much about the secondary characters because of their limited time on-screen.
Thus we've had episodes about all of our regulars, like the one about Kevin Ryan’s past as an undercover cop that highlights for us where the steel that he occasionally shows in dealing with suspects comes from.

According to a new report from TV Line, the Castle season 8 folks have decided to get rid of character ,Captain Victoria Gates, from the storyline, so that means poor portrayer, Penny Johnson Jerald (left), is out of a job, and apparently got blindsided by the news. Here's what she had to say about it on her official Twitter feed: "To my Castle fans around the world, as of late yesterday I am surprised and saddened to learn that I will no longer be a part of the Castle family. Thank you all for your support and love. Hugs from Pjj.” So sad. Anyways, they say this development came about because new showrunners, Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley, have decided to give the show several creative tweaks and one of them tweaked Victoria right out the door. Oh well. Season 8 premieres this Fall 2015.

"Castle" Season 6 is finally giving fans a closer look at the personal life of Captain Victoria Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald). In episode 19, "The Greater Good," Gates' sister, Elizabeth Weston (Salli Richardson-Whitfield, "Eureka"), enters the picture as a Us Attorney involved with a murder case.
Things are not particularly good between the sisters. Zap2it talked to Johnson Jerald about the episode and what it means for Gates.
Zap2it: What can you share about 'The Greater Good'?
Johnson Jerald: I can tell you that it is an exciting episode. I can tell you that you will enjoy the cast, the guest stars, and you're definitely going to support and love Salli Richardson, who is playing my sister. She's a wonderful choice.
Is this an episode in which Gates' personal life is exposed, or will she mostly just be working the case?
This particular episode, you're going to get to see both.

The 100th episode of "Castle" may be airing on Monday, April 1 (10 p.m. Et on ABC), but it's no April Fools joke -- in fact, the consequences of the "Rear Window"-esque case could hit surprisingly close to home for our heroes.

She may not have made the most pleasant debut on Castle last week, in the eyes of viewers, but Captain Victoria Gates is far from an evil person.
"She wants the best at that precinct," Penny Johnson Jerald told me on the phone Friday. "Does that really include having a writer hanging around?
From an outsider's point of view, it's a perfectly reasonably question to ask.
Of course, Castle has undermined Gates and gone to the mayor. He has to be around now, an arrangement both sides will struggle to deal with.
"He'll try to show the captain that he knows his stuff. You'll see if she's impressed or not," the actress says. "I can say that we'll go through some kind of transition and hopefully find a happy medium."

As audiences need not be reminded, last season’s Castle finale left us all in shock, not to mention a bit tear soaked over the death of beloved Captain Roy Montgomery and the shooting of Kate Beckett at his funeral. With Richard Castle’s “I love you” being perhaps the final words Beckett heard, tonight’s third season picks-up to find out (1) if Beckett survives and (2) whether or not she heard Castle’s confession. Then joining in the ranks to take over the precinct is Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, who has no preexisting relationship with any of them and who has a decidedly different view on whether Richard Castle, as a writer, should be allowed to shadow a lead detective into harm’s way on a regular basis.

Kate Beckett is not going to die, let's bet serious.
But that doesn't mean her season three finale shooting won't have serious repercussions, especially on the man who said he loves her.
In the following new promo for Castle's return on September 19, we see Castle struggling with the perilous state of his partner, blaming himself for her fall and fighting with Josh. We also get a very quick glimpse of Penny Johnson Jerald as the new captain, Victoria Gates.

Let’s just get this out of the way: Of Course She Lives! I mean, there’s no Castle without Beckett (Stana Katic). Period.
That said, this new Castle promo really gives us a great look at the drama that will arise in the aftermath of Beckett’s shooting at the end of last season. Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) bloody hands and ominous voiceover (“Everything that’s happened, happened because of me”) are completely chill-worthy. Not to mention the first look at the fight between Josh and Castle that’s been teased. (#Team Castle, duh)
In the quick flashes, we also see new Capt.

I keep staring at this new promo photo for Castle and trying to think about what to say. But words truly escape me. It’s. Just. That. Good.
The colors. The styling. Nathan Fillion seemingly plucked straight out of my noir-themed dreams, in which he always co-stars (with me, duh). Oh, and look, Beckett’s (Stana Katic) alive…and fancy looking.
Also debuting in the new cast photo is Penny Johnson Jerald (third from right), who, as reported, joins the cast this season as Capt. Victoria Gates. (Spoilers on that here.)

Castle fans will soon find out what 24 viewers learned many years ago: Penny Johnson Jerald means business.
The actress, who made such a great villain on that Fox drama's first couple seasons, will come on board season four as Captain Victoria Gates. And she won't have very much patient for a certain author who likes to act like a cop.
"She's not warm and cuddly," Seamus Deaver (Detective Kevin Ryan) tells TV Guide of his character's new boss. "So the days of us being protected, and the days of Castle being very welcome at the precinct are over."
Nathan Fillion adds that there won't be any "trust" between Castle and the new captain, who has no history with him or with Beckett.
"You have a veritable stranger - who's not an easy woman - and you have Castle, who's very accustomed to dealing with women, but usually he finds himself being adored and charming.

Nathan Fillion has confirmed that his character will clash with the new police captain when Castle returns. Penny Johnson Jerald recently signed up to play Victoria Gates, who is replacing Captain Montgomery in the ABC show. Fillion has now told Collider that Castle will begin to realise that Montgomery had motives for keeping him around. "What we discover is that Roy Montgomery had a reason to have Castle there," he said. "He had an interest in Beckett and felt a responsibility towards her. He knew she was haunted, knew she was tortured, and saw the effect that Castle had on her. So he had an interest in keeping Castle close. "The new captain, not so much. She's not invested in these cops, and certainly not Castle, the way that Montgomery was. It's going to be much more difficult for Castle." Fillion also suggested that (more)...

Nathan Fillion is going to have to watch his back now that Penny Johnson Jerald is going to be his new boss in ABC’s Castle according to TV Guide. Jerald will play Victoria Gates who has spent a good chunk of her career working Internal Affairs. She’s focuses on advancing her career, which she has now that she’s captain of the 12th precinct, but usually forgets to actually do any police work because she’s too busy kissing her superior’s butts. It’s a common characteristic of TV show bosses to only care about advancing their careers and everyone loves having someone to hate.
