Milo Ventimiglia was just 19 years old and starting out in Hollywood when he was cast as a gay teen in the 1996 short, “Must Be the Music.” You’d think his team would have advised him not to play queer, but Ventimiglia says he received nothing but support to sign on.
“I played a gay teenager who is going out with his friends, meets a guy but his buddy’s best friend is already kind of sweet on that guy,” Ventimiglia remembered. “Then he ends up giving them a ride home and he gets the guys number. It was a very sweet story.”
The short was produced by Gus Van Sant.
“That’s the great thing about being an actor,” the “This Is Us” star said at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. “You play a lot of different roles. You represent a lot of roles. You represent a lot of stories.

This Friday sees the release of a “coming of age” story with a couple of very interesting twists. Yes, it’s about a young woman yearning to break free of her childhood home as she approaches the end of high school. Of course, there’s all the college prep, changing friendships, and even a new budding romance. Now, here’s the big detour: she’s conflicted as she believes her folks can’t really fend for themselves. In fact, many might think that she’s really “raising” them. So there’s the conflict between exploration and guilt. And it is “inspired by real events”, in fact, it’s a dramatized take on a documentary from a couple of years ago. Plus it touches on many similar themes as a film from earlier in the month. So, with this young woman’s blossoming new life, could she be the title’s Wildflower?...

National Anthem Review: Classic Americana Is Turned On Its Head In Powerful Queer Ballad [SXSW 2023]
In our turbulent sociopolitical climate, it can be hard to remember how important fostering community among fellow LGBTQ individuals is. This is especially true if you're in the South or Southwest, where conservative ideals still reign supreme to the point where it might feel suffocating. It may seem hopeless to realize who you really are, but when you do find your people, it can be the most freeing feeling in the world.
That feeling lies at the center of visual artist Luke Gilford's feature debut, "National Anthem." Set against the sprawling landscapes of New Mexico, the film centers around Dylan (Charlie Plummer), a lonely construction worker who takes an odd job at the House of Splendor ranch. There, his life forever changes when he meets rodeo performers and ranchers from across the queer spectrum, leading to his sexual and gender awakening. From the impressive cinematography to its refreshingly non-pandering script,...

At the beginning of National Anthem, writer-director Luke Gilford’s exquisite-looking and subversive debut feature, 21-year-old Dylan (Charlie Plummer) lives a particularly burdensome and monotonous life. Within his small, rural, isolated New Mexico community he supports his family by shoveling gravel at temporary construction gigs and returns to his one-bedroom home to feed and take care of Cassidy (Joey DeLeon), his younger brother. Most nights his alcoholic hairdresser mother goes out late and returns home with drunken flings, forcing her two sons to sleep on the couch. It’s a difficult, lonely existence, and throughout his primary caretaking Dylan sees no opportunity to escape.
But that pendulum shifts when Pepe (Rene Rosado) pulls up in a pickup truck and offers a group of day laborers some extra work. Lacking many options, Dylan obliges and soon discovers an alternative lifestyle just 30 minutes down the road. Initially tasked with bailing hay at House of Splendor,...

Thankfully there seems to have been a moratorium lately on movies that mine the Lgtbq+ experience for tragedy and awards. There’s also been a move towards authenticity, notably in the area of casting trans actors for trans roles, and both of those factors help and hinder photographer Luke Gilford’s feature debut, a film as rich in personality as a Diane Arbus snap but, dramatically, about as punchy as an instalment of High School Musical. In another year, this might be more of a problem than it actually is, since, perhaps more by coincidence than design, National Anthem arrives at a time when everything it celebrates is under attack, and such a low-key affirmation of personal growth and freedom might actually be what we really need right now.

Toward the end of National Anthem, D’Angelo Lacy in splendiferous drag sings a powerful a cappella rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while an assembled group of Queer Rodeo competitors and spectators stand in reverent silence through that hymn of patriotism, hands on hearts. Given that the recently passed Tennessee bill banning drag performances is looking to spread through red states and legitimize transphobic discrimination, the scene takes on added poignancy. That helps bolster the emotional heft of first-time writer-director Luke Gilford’s gentle New Mexico-set story of self-discovery in a chosen family.
Gilford knows the setting well. He grew up in the Southwest, with fond memories of attending rodeos with his father as a kid, only later becoming aware of how homophobic and narrow — white, Christian conservative, macho — mainstream rodeos could be. Returning after years of studying art and working in New York, Gilford discovered the International Gay Rodeo Association,...

A coming-of-age film that follows Bea from birth to graduation as she navigates life with neurodivergent parents and an extended family who can't quite agree on the best way to help. "Inspired by a true story, Wildflower is powered by Bea’s witty, bewildered voiceover. With its top-notch ensemble cast — which includes Jean Smart and Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver as Bea’s battling grandmothers — the film spills over with compassion, curiosity, and boisterous, unpredictable life." Kiernan Shipka plays a girl torn between caring for her neurodivergent parents and figuring out her future in the trailer for “Wildflower.”
From Momentum Pictures, the film follows Bea (Shipka), a high school girl on the cusp of graduation. Balancing work, school and looking out for her parents Derek (Dash Mihok) and Sharon (Samantha Hyde) has forced Bea to grow up quickly, a point of tension with members of her extended family.
As shown in the trailer, her parents fell in love at a young age before marrying and giving birth to Bea (full name: Bambi). Their families worry about whether or not they can take care of a child.
“What choice do we have?” asks Weaver’s character.

"Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years." It's an LL Cool J lyric but it applies to one Geoffrey Rush, renowned Australian stage and screen actor. One of the few people who have earned an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy, and a Tony Award, Rush's resume is extensive and varied.
Following an early career on the stage with the Queensland Theater Company, Rush gained universal acclaim in a breakthrough performance in 1996 with "Shine," snagging that Best Actor Oscar. Roles of great gravitas would further cement his fame, like that of sneaky spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham in Shekhar Kapur's 1998 drama "Elizabeth" and the militant Javert in Bille August's 1998 film adaptation of "Les Miserables." Rush has also kept critics on their toes with oddball roles like that of Stephen Price (a fantastic nod to Vincent Price) in the 1999 remake of "The House on Haunted Hill." The kiddies...

Most cheerful movies don’t open with their protagonist in a coma, narrating the events from their hospital bed. But in a fortunate reversal, director Matt Smukler’s “Wildflower” mostly grows from there, into a sweet yet straightforward coming of age drama.
“Wildflower” stars Kiernan Shipka (“Swimming With Sharks”) as Bambi, who prefers to be called “Bea” because her parents named her after a cartoon character. Those parents, Sharon (Samantha Hyde) and Derek, are both intellectually disabled, but living independently in their own house, keeping their family afloat through positive attitudes, good-natured religion and working class stick-to-itiveness.
As we learn from Bea’s flashbacks — in scenes she couldn’t possibly have witnessed or heard about from her parents — Sharon and Derek’s romance was easy for them, but difficult for their own families. Jean Smart and Brad Garrett play Sharon’s mother and father, and Jacki Weaver plays Derek’s mother,...

As they say here north of the border: Time to drop the puck on the 2022 Toronto Film Festival.
The weather is beautiful, and they’ve cordoned off King Street from the Lightbox to Roy Thomson Hall. People are getting their bearings, most not wearing masks in the open air. This is a sight better than last year, when the cable cars were not rerouted from King Street because so few came for the festivities. Not surprisingly, not a single major deal happened on the ground as the festivals and specialty theatrical business were still feeling the fallout from Covid.
Toronto Film Festival: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Will this year be any better? Some believe it certainly can’t get worse. Buyers and sellers expect the pace to be on the slow side, with some possible exceptions. I hear that the hot title is one that isn’t officially on the for-sale lists,...

A cemetery is not an auspicious choice of rendezvous point for an estranged father and son arranging what might be one last meeting in “A Perfect Day for Caribou,” but the dry joke of Jeff Rutherford’s tender, affectingly reserved first feature is that things get more melancholic still when they leave its glum confines. Set over the course of a single day on the fringes of some dead American anytown, this at once quiet and talkative two-hander covers no especially new ground, but strides known territory with a keen eye for lonesome landscapes, and an ear for the eternal communicative impasse felt by men who know each other all too well and not at all. Sturdy, thoughtful performances from Jeb Berrier and, in particular, rising star Charlie Plummer should hook distributor interest in this low-key indie following its premiere in Locarno’s newcomer-oriented Cineasti de Presente strand.

Two men occupy diagonal ends of the poster for Jeff Rutherford’s first feature film, “A Perfect Day for Caribou.” One hangs suspended in space, like a kite held in the air, but with cassette tape instead of rope. The tape spools down into a dictaphone, held by a man with a reindeer head.
This absurdist image is illustrative of the film, in which a father finds himself tethered to his son, despite attempts to depart from these family ties. As the film unravels into a meditation on memory, loss and abandonment, interspersed with uncanny cutaways to, for instance, men on fire, audiences may realize that “A Perfect Day for Caribou” is intent on building an intimacy with the visually absurd.

In Jeff Rutherford’s feature debut, Plummer and Jeb Berrier play an estranged son and father, respectively, who spend the day ambling around a cemetery, wandering the wilderness, searching for family, and “stumbling through disharmony and heartache.”
The film is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio, shot in black and white by DoP Alfonso Herrera Salcedo, who has won several awards for his work, including the 2018 Kodak Cinematography Vision Award, the Golden Tadpole in the Student Competition at Camerimage in 2019 for “Lefty/Righty,” and the Bisato d’Oro for best cinematography at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 for Joaquín del Paso’s “The Hole in the Fence.”

“No Time to Die” director Cary Fukunaga is being accused of inappropriate workplace behavior and abusing his power on set to engage in relationships with younger women. Anonymous sources from the production of the upcoming AppleTV+ miniseries “Masters of the Air,” on which the 44-year-old Fukunaga serves as a director, told Rolling Stone that he engaged in an “absolute, clear-cut abuse of power” when engaging with young female actresses and crew members.
Fukunaga denies the claim, with his attorney Michael Plonsker issuing a statement that notes, “There is nothing salacious about pursuing friendships or consensual romantic relationships with women.” Plonsker continued that “no one ever — not once — voiced such sentiments to” Fukunaga over harassment claims. “He creates a work environment that is creative, collaborative and welcoming to all,” Plonsker said in a statement.
