Despite the divisive eighth season, audiences still consider Game of Thrones one of the best TV shows ever. It marked a peak period of TV viewing where people waited with high anticipation for the next week to drop to watch what happens next. The series has won multiple Emmys, and it has spawned several spinoffs.

George R.R. Martin always wanted to adapt the books in his beloved series, A Song of Ice and Fire. However, the scale, complexity, and dark subject matter of the novels proved that it would be a herculean task to adapt to live-action, almost to the point of being unfilmable. Martin’s hopes would soon be made to come true.

Disney has just won a lawsuit against Christopher and Hannah Martin for selling bootleg Disney merchandise to their social media followers via their account “Sparkling Dreamers.” Before Disney took the issue to court, they sent the couple two cease and desist letters, which were ignored.
Normally, Disney doesn’t seem to get too involved if people are selling their designs for ears or shirts, but in this case, the couple apparently marked that the company address was Walt Disney World. This was enough for the Mouse to go after them. While they made some changes, they were still insufficient for Disney.
Apparently, they even tried to apply for a copyright registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for their logo, which Disney said was a version similar to their trademarked Disneyland logo.
In January of 2023, Disney sent them a 700-page filing for a lawsuit against them.

Gorgeous, eye-popping animation and a compelling story make Iwaju soar high. The title is a rough translation of the future, and this is a co-production between Walt Disney and Kugali Media, a UK-based pan-African company. In the span of six episodes, Iwaju tells a tale that is rather simple story-wise, but the presentation is absolutely top-notch. The science-fiction setting only adds value to it, and the subtle message it gives never feels too preachy.

Gary Martin, the longtime Sony Pictures executive and major supporter of the Motion Picture & Television Fund who has a historic Wizard of Oz soundstage named for him, has died. He was 79.
Martin died Thursday of natural causes at his home in Sherwood Forest, California, a family spokesperson announced.
When he retired as president of studio operations and production at Sony in 2013, the studio renamed its storied Stage 15 — one of the largest in the world — the Gary Martin Stage. Built in 1927, it was used for 1939’s The Wizard of Oz — the yellow brick road is under the current stage floor — and more recently for Spider-Man and Men in Black films.
At the dedication, then-Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal said of Martin: “His leadership, grace and skill are unparalleled in our business. There is no one who comes close.”
He oversaw production of more than 600 films at the studio.

Will “Saturday Night Live” rebound in the guest categories at the Emmys? Will “Succession” match its seven guest bids last year? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the guest races, which are guaranteed new winners in at least three categories.
“SNL” has dominated the comedy guest categories since it first competed there in 2009, winning 14 times — seven in each category. But last year, it earned just one bid, Best Comedy Guest Actor for Jerrod Carmichael. At the moment, the sketch series is expected to receive three nominations, for Quinta Brunson, Pedro Pascal and co-host duo Steve Martin and Martin Short. All four are in the hunt for — and likely to get — nominations for their regular series, “Abbott Elementary,” “The Last of Us” and “Only Murders in the Building,” respectively. Will this help them score guest bids? The Martins could also lose to their “Only Murders” co-star,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as viewers consume Netflix’s “Beef,” we we go over the comedy races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and I’m happy to ask and answer our first question: Where’s the “Beef”? On Netflix! This week, the streaming giant of a thousand shows and movies launched one of its better efforts in a bit: “Beef,” a dark comedy that’s not really funny but also funnier than many ostensible comedy shows — something we tried to inventory this week already with our voices. We’re both fans of this one, a character study of two broken people that feels like an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” but make it “Weeds”? Whatever the comps, “Beef” feels like it could...

If you told me that the director Gabriel Martins thought exclusively in images, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Mars One, his gracefully composed observation of a working-class Brazilian family, is littered with arresting shots. Take the one of Tércia, the matriarch played by Rejane Faria, cleaning a window: Her curly mop of bleached blonde hair remains static as her right hand slides across the glass, her back muscles flexing in response to the laborious task. Or the scene of her daughter Eunice (Camilla Damião) consummating her love with her girlfriend on the floor of an empty penthouse apartment. Her dark skin gleams against the sharp, white-tiled floor as the baby-blue colored braids of her lover slither across her skin. These scenes are occasions — charged flashes of the director’s loving preoccupation with his story. And who wouldn’t be obsessed with such a humane, well-calibrated tale?

There’s a strange synchronicity in watching writer-director Gabriel Martins’ latest feature “Mars One” as Brazil rejoices in the recent re-election of Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva for a third term. The bittersweet film, in theaters and on Netflix now via Ava DuVernay’s distribution label Array, begins just as rightwing politician Jair Bolsonaro was elected in late 2018.
But for the working-class family at its center, the macro changes in the spheres of government don’t much register while they struggle to stay financially afloat. Bolsonaro’s election and inauguration play in the background of their everyday lives without any of the characters ever acknowledging or engaging with the results. Not only are they from a lower socioeconomic status, but they are Black in a still racist society, like most in Latin America.
By slowly introducing each of the four family members’ individual concerns in a mostly seamless manner (even...

Sometimes, the simplest stories are the most monumental. A boy wants to be an astronaut, a girl falls in love, a father lives out his dreams through his son. This is the stuff of life — nothing more, nothing less. Watching a film like “Mars One,” from Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Martins, is a humbling experience. Why over-complicate this storytelling business when a gifted storyteller can make such moving magic out of everyday experiences?
Set in the wake of the election of Brazil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, “Mars One” follows a single working-class family as they long for more, love each other, self-reflect, and struggle to make ends meet. Where a lesser film might pick one character to focus on, “Mars One” All relatable, flawed, and charming in their own ways, they antagonize each other without anyone losing their humanity.
Martins strikes a delicate balance that’s unusually satisfying from a narrative perspective.

Exclusive: Timothy Scott Bogart’s movie Spinning Gold about his music producer father, Neil Bogart, and the iconic label he built, Casablanca Records, will hit theaters on Friday, March 31, 2023.
The release and distribution will be handled by Hero Partners in partnership with Howling Wolf Films, with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment distributing across transactional home entertainment.
Neil Bogart saw the rise and fall of Casablanca Records, which in its heyday from the mid-to-late 1970s was a powerhouse in the disco sphere with artists such as Donna Summer, pop bands like The Village People and hard rock with Kiss.
