David Gordon Green’s Stronger is based on the true story of Jeff Bauman, who became a symbol of national hope after surviving the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The screenplay was written by John Pollono, who adapted the book by Bauman and Bret Witter.
The movie, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman and Tatiana Maslany as his girlfriend Erin, does not shy away from the physical hardships of Bauman after he lost both legs above the knee. But it also shows his mental struggle with Ptsd after the bombing, a topic not frequently explored in film.

After portraying 11 different clones (and winning an Emmy for her efforts) in the recently wrapped sci-fi series "Orphan Black", Tatiana Maslany is slacking off by playing just a single character, Erin Hurley, in this month’s Stronger.
The film is based on the book by Jeff Bauman and Bret Witter and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Bauman, who was standing at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon waiting for girlfriend Hurley to complete the race when the blast from the bomb left by terrorist Tamerlan Tsarnaev exploded at his feet.
Bauman lost both legs — but was able to identify Tsarnaev from his hospital bed — and the movie recounts Bauman and Hurley’s relationship as he begins his arduous journey of recovery.

Based on a True Story: That phrase – Hollywood-speak for bullshit – can put audiences on guard for fact-fudging and bogus uplift. Not so with Stronger, a powerhouse biopic that sidesteps the pitfalls of the genre in favor of keeping it real, warts and all. Kudos to a brilliant, hilariously unexpected performance from Jake Gyllenhaal as Jeff Bauman, a beer-guzzling, Boston boyo who lost both his legs, just above the knee, in the 2013 Marathon bombing. For director David Gordon Green (George Washington, Pineapple Express), the way to truly honor the man is...

Peter Berg’s take of unsung heroes Patriots Day is barely a year old and here we are with another Boston Marathon bombing film in David Gordon Green’s Stronger. Rather than focus on the event itself, however, John Pollono’s script turns focus squarely onto the shoulders of Jeff Bauman—the terrorist attack’s most recognizable victim. But while he could have easily minimized this man’s struggle into a generic fluff piece of Hollywood inspirational perseverance, he admirably highlights the darkness those “lucky” enough to survive endure instead. We’ve seen the interviews and heard pundits declare Jeff a hero on national TV. We’ve seen his smile waving the Bruins’ flag and throwing a Red Sox pitch. Pollono and Green make it their duty to show what’s missing from those images: the pain concealed beneath.

For fans of David Gordon Green’s more dramatic leanings — think his earlier films like “George Washington” and “All the Real Girls,” less the “Your Highness” and “The Sitter” years — his fact-based “Stronger” offers not precisely a return to form, but a return to his ability to find great meaning in world-weary emotions. His most grounded film yet and his first attempt to dramatizing a true story, “Stronger” takes an unvarnished tone to the kind of heartstring-pulling biopic that other directors might simply play for emotional fireworks, turning in a far more nuanced and satisfying experience in the process. Bolstered by sterling turns from stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, and Miranda Richardson, the film is a showcase for what Green has always been able to do so well, and what his actors continue to excel at.

If Peter Berg’s gripping Patriots Day centered on Boston’s law enforcement and how they reacted to the marathon bombing of 2013, then David Gordon Green’s true-life drama Stronger looks set to tell its story through the lens of Jeff Bauman, a 27-year-old Boston native left on the brink of death after the attack.
While waiting at the finish line to cheer on his ex-girlfriend, Erin, Bauman was sadly one of the 16 people who lost limbs once the blast occurred – both legs, in this particular case – and was forced to undergo a long, painful road to recovery that involved Ptsd, crippling physical pain and, ultimately, becoming the “living embodiment of the Boston Strong.” It’s a story with enough raw emotion to reduce us to an emotional wreck, and by adapting Bauman and Bret Witter’s non-fiction novel, Green and screenwriter John Pollono will no doubt deliver a poignant, touching tribute to those affected by the Boston attack.
On board to help bring that story to life are Jake Gyllenhaal (The Division) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), two equally dynamic actors that could well be in line for award nominations for their respective performances.
The official synopsis for the film is as follows:
Stronger follows Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become the symbol of hope following the infamous 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Gyllenhaal stars as Jeff, a 27-year-old, working-class Boston man who was at the marathon to try and win back his ex-girlfriend Erin (Maslany). Waiting for her at the finish line when the blast occurs, he loses both his legs in the attack. After regaining consciousness in the hospital, Jeff is able to help law enforcement identify one of the bombers, but his own battle has just begun. He tackles months of physical and emotional rehabilitation with the unwavering support of Erin and his family. It is Jeff’s deeply personal account of the heroic journey that tests a family’s bond, defines a community’s pride and inspires his inner courage to overcome devastating adversity. Filled with raw emotion, humanity and humor, Stronger is the inspirational real-life story of the man who became the living embodiment of “Boston Strong.”
Stronger, also starring Miranda Richardson and Clancy Brown, is expected to open on September 22nd, a date it currently shares with Battle of the Sexes, The Lego Ninjago Movie and Matthew Vaughn’s action sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

On the heels of Southpaw's theatrical release, Jake Gyllenhaal could be gearing up for another heroic, physically challenging role. Variety reports that the actor is in early talks to star in Stronger, a based-on-a-true-story recount of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing aftermath, told through the eyes of survivor Jeff Bauman. As is the Hollywood way, whenever a story grips the nation, a bunch of different projects launch headfirst into development, hoping to capitalize on the media craze. Such is the case with the Boston Marathon Bombing, which will feature into three or more different movies housed all over town.
One in particular, though, titled Stronger, is taking some big steps forward. David Gordon Green is in negotiations to direct the inspirational drama, and today brings word that Jake Gyllenhaal, still bathing in critical acclaim after his performance as a down-and-out boxer in Southpaw, is looking at taking on the lead role.
Gyllenhaal would play Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the attack while waiting at the finish line of the annual marathon for his girlfriend to finish competing. Bauman was caught in the blast when two pressure cooker bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring hundreds more.

The bombing attack of the Boston Marathon in 2013 was, obviously, a hugely dramatic event, one that took three lives, altered countless others forever, and caught the attention of the entire world. Stuckey will adapt the upcoming book Santa Claus Is For Real: A True Christmas Fable About the Magic of Believing by Charles E. Hall and Bret Witter, which Random House publishes next week. The film tells the story of Charles E. Hall, the man who plays Santa in Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular. Just one year after the Boston Marathon was brutally interrupted by a fatal bombing, Variety reports Lionsgate is planning a drama focusing on survivor Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the attack (a picture of his injuries made the rounds on social media). The film will be called Stronger, and is based on a book written by Bauman himself and Bret Witter, which details the aftermath of the horrible 2013 attack that saw several explosions happen at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Bauman wasn't in the race himself, but was cheering for his girlfriend, and ended up being one of the 260 people injured that day. Bauman became a big part of the investigation the next day after he awoke following several surgeries. He couldn't speak, but he wrote down on a piece of paper, "Saw the guy. Looked right at me." The book chronicles these events and also...

“Stronger” is based on the book by Bauman and Bret Witter and details the aftermath of the 2013 attack at the marathon finish line, where Bauman had been cheering for his girlfriend. A photo of Bauman moments after the blast remains one of the best-known images from the tragedy, which killed three and injured more than 260.When Bauman awoke the next day after surgeries and realized he could not speak, he asked for a pad and paper and wrote, “Saw the guy. Looked right at me,” setting off a massive manhunt.

As jaunty as Jean Dujardin’s beret, but in a sincere, old-fashioned kind of way. It could almost have been rediscovered from the 1940s… I’m “biast” (pro): love Clooney as an actor and a filmmaker; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I try to avoid hearing too much of other critics’ reactions to a film before I’ve seen it, but there was no avoiding the barrage of disappointment that came hurling over Twitter last week, as so many of my North American colleagues responded to The Monuments Men with a resounding “meh.” This was a disappointment to me, because I’d been so looking forward to this movie.
Well, now that I’ve seen it, I don’t know what the hell they’re all talking about, because this movie is fantastic.

Art imitates life in George Clooney's latest, albeit the last moments of life before a total flat-line. He co-writes, directs and stars in The Monuments Men, a tribute to the Us platoon charged with protecting history's greatest artworks during the Second World War. It's a noble quest but Clooney pushes the point too hard - when he isn't trying to lighten the mood.
There is nothing intrinsically funny about the story which sees a bunch of uniformed art experts risking life and limb to recover stolen treasures across Germany. Still, Clooney tries to frame it like an old-fashioned heist caper in the vein of The Dirty Dozen and Kelly's Heroes with a parping trombone section to underline the bits where you're supposed to be amused.

Tale of Nazi art theft fails to spark to life in George Clooney’s sprawling World War II drama "The Monuments Men." The greatest art theft in the history of mankind unfolds during the last, good war. Really, how can this tale not be an extraordinary Hollywood movie? Imagine walking into a great museum and seeing mostly empty frames instead of masterpieces. That’s essentially the story of The Monuments Men, the smart but surprisingly sparkless World War II adventure from actor/director George Clooney. Clooney, deservedly so, gets added points for adapting Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s historical novel, working with co-writer and frequent collaborator Grant Heslov, about a team of American and British museum directors, curators and art historians racing to stop the theft and destruction of priceless works of art stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

As the trailers and post-holiday pushback release suggested, George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" is dead on arrival. What went wrong? As a writer-director, Clooney is hit-or-miss. He's in love with old-fashioned Hollywood genres like the Cold War spy thriller comedy ("Confessions of a Dangerous Mind") or period sports romance ("Leatherheads") that would be a challenge for any director to pull off. They were both duds. On the other hand, black-and-white newsroom drama "Good Night, and Good Luck" earned six Academy Award nominations, and "Ides of March" scored another for scribe Beau Willamon, who went on to write "House of Cards." Unfortunately, "Monuments Men," adapted from Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter's book by Clooney and his co-producer Grant Heslov, is one of Clooney's more flat-footed efforts. It means to be a John Frankenheimer wartime thriller with soldiers in danger trying to rescue the world's great works of art from the Nazis--art-lover Hitler has.

Check out the sneak peek clip from this Thursday night’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” featuring the cast of director/actor George Clooney’s new film, The Monuments Men, including Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, and even Kimmel’s arch-enemy, Matt Damon.
The episode also includes a new edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” famed “Mean Tweets” segment, featuring all six members of “The Monuments Men” cast reading horrible comments from social media about themselves.
5-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat (The King’S Speech, Argo) composed the score for the film. As with many of his previous works, Desplat’s music takes the viewer on an exciting journey in the same way Frank De Vol did with The Dirty Dozen and Elmer Bernstein did in The Great Escape. He totally captures the rousing themes of an old-time, big Hollywood World War II movie.

Art may not be more important than human lives. But on the list of things that mean something to human lives, across centuries, it ranks pretty high. That's what's so compelling about the story of the Monuments Men, a group of people from 13 nations who volunteered to protect cultural treasures from destruction during World War II. Most of us like to think we'd stride into a combat zone to save a distressed child. But would we do the same for a Michelangelo Madonna?
You can see why George Clooney, director and star of The Monuments Men, would be attracted to these comparatively unheralded heroes, particularly as Robert M. It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and producer Scott Stuber have set Sarah Treem to adapt Until I Say Good-Bye: My Year Of Living With Joy, the memoir by Susan Spencer-Wendel and Bret Witter that the studio bought in a seven-figure deal in June 2012. This was after the book landed a $2.3 million publishing deal from HarperCollins, back when the working title was Breathe Deeply. This is the memoir by Spencer-Wendel of facing her mortality as Als begins to take a toll on her. Treem’s recent credits include HBO’s In Treatment, Netflix’s House Of Cards and the Showtime pilot The Affair. Spencer-Wendel is a longtime court reporter for the Palm Beach Post who, at age 44, was diagnosed with Als, the degenerative ailment most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease that destroys the nerves that power muscles including the lungs. The book and movie action came from a Wall Street Journal article written about her illness.

I suppose everyone has to have their war movie, and if you’re George Clooney, you can get a hell of a cast for The Monuments Men.
Hitting December 18th, this one is already getting a lot of award buzz, and if Clooney and the rest of the cast aren’t enough, you’ve also got a war movie that’s actually about an artistic cause, and that opens the door for scenes with Bill Murray and John Goodman struggling to get through an obstacle course. That’s just feel good gold.
For some, this is the first film in a while that billed itself as “based on a true story,” that didn’t cause you to roll your eyes, and this one isn’t just about the exploits of various art historians suddenly thrown into war, it’s about the fact that they needed to be in the first place.

However this year’s Award Season pans out, The Monuments Men, along with it’s star-studded cast, is akin to the old-Hollywood WWII movies The Dirty Dozen, Guns Of Navarone, and The Longest Day – all of which were big commercial successes and Academy Award winners.
