Nora Ephron is dead at 71.
The beloved screenwriter, who brought to life award-winning films including "Silkwood," "When Harry Met Sally...," "Sleepless in Seattle," "You've Got Mail" and, most recently "Julie & Julia," belonged to America's top tier of filmmakers, but her talents extended far beyond Hollywood. Ephron was also an accomplished essayist, novelist and reporter, not to mention the Editor-at-Large of The Huffington Post.
Raised in Beverly Hills, Ephron graduated from Wellesley College before beginning her career as a journalist at the New York Post. She then went on to write about the 1970s women's movement for Esquire.
"Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady," Ephron told Wellesley's Class of 1996 in a commencement speech. "I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose...

As a director he has helmed The Hostel Series, as a producer he watched over The Last Exorcism, and as an actor he has co-star alongside Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds. Eli Roth has done it all and will make the ground beneath us shake once more. Slashfilm got their hands on some exclusive photos from Nicolás López Aftershock, an English-language action-thriller inspired by the Chilean earthquake. The movie also stars Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez, Lorenza Izzo, Andrea Osvart and Natasha Yarovenko, with a special cameo made by international pop super star Selena Gomez. Screendaily has word that the movie has been picked up in 17 countries. Below are the images from Aftershock.
Next up we have our first image from Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, the crime drama lead by teen action star Saoirse Ronan. The movie also stars Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Caleb Landry Jones, Jonny Lee Miller and Danny Mays.

After since kicking ass in Hanna, Saoirse Ronan is quickly becoming the go-to for young female action stars. I saw her do it in the Toronto film Violet & Daisy with Alexis Bledel, while she is recently attached to Disney’s warrior film Order of Seven. Next on her docket is Neil Jordan‘s vampire tale Byzantium. Following “a mother and daughter vampire duo [who] form a deadly pact, we have the first look today from Deadline for the Ondine follow-up also starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Caleb Landry Jones, Jonny Lee Miller and Danny Mays. Above we can see a bloodied Ronan who looks to recently have had a tasty meal. I’m worn on this genre, but I enjoyed the first two-thirds or so of Jordan’s last film, so will look out for this.
We’ve also got the first batch of images for the Eli Roth-produced earthquake film Aftershock.

It was recently revealed that Eli Roth was starring in Aftershock, a project he’s been working on since 2010. Directed by Nicolas Lopez and produced by Eli Roth, the movie revolves around survivors in the aftermath of an earthquake. The film stars Eli Roth, Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez, Lorenza Izzo, Selena Gomez, Andrea Osvart and Natasha Yarovenko.
We reported earlier that a number of companies had grabbed up foreign distribution rights for the film. At that time it was noted that this may not be a typical disaster film: “I’ve heard from potential buyers that the plot revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.”

Eli Roth and Selena Gomez will star in earthquake thriller Aftershock. The low-budget project, which Hostel director Roth co-wrote with Nicolas Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo, centres on a devastating natural disaster that hits Chile. The quake strikes an island that houses an insane asylum, causing the inmates to break free. The movie will follow on from The Last Exorcism and be released under the 'Eli Roth Presents' banner. Lopez will direct Aftershock with Roth in the lead role, and his past collaborators Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez and Lorenza Izzo among the supporting cast. Music star Gomez, who starred in the recent Monte Carlo, signed up for a cameo role (more)...

Deadline reports that multiple offers are on the table for Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez & Guillermo Amoedo. The plot revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake. Several distributors are in talks, with the Weinstein Company and Relativity Media among them. The dealmaking will likely take place in Berlin. Its the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds, Roth plays the lead. Among the other cast is Selena Gomez, who was in Chile doing a concert and came over to do a cameo. Lopezs frequent collaborators Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez and Lorenza Izzo also star, along with Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart and Miguel Asensio.

“I love you.” “I want to be like you.” “You’re awesome,” is how nearly every woman prefaced their question (and it was mainly women doing the asking) for Amy Poehler’s conversation with Ariel Levy this past weekend at the New Yorker Festival. Poehler is smart, funny, warm, confident, and knows what she wants. The child of two public school teachers, Poehler grew up loving school and was a self-proclaimed “good kid.” It might sound like I’m describing your best friend, your sister, or even you — and perhaps that’s the best part of Amy Poehler. What sets her apart from the rest of us is one thing: her main goal is to make us laugh.

Hollywoodnews.com: We have a little bit of time to process the extensive South By Southwest film line up, which was unveiled by festival programmers earlier this week. This year’s event, scheduled to take over beautiful Austin, Texas from March 11 to 19, will showcase 130 features including 60 world premieres, 12 North American premieres and 16 U.S. premieres.
“SXSW prides itself on taking chances, sifting for films that are the seedlings of the next generation of must-see artists,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “This year’s line up is full of emerging voices and filmmakers who transcended the resources they had on hand, often with an alchemist’s touch.”
As we prepare to bring you exclusive coverage from Austin, I went ahead and singled out the 15 films I’m most looking forward to seeing while in town. The descriptions were provided by the SXSW press team,...

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

The South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) just announced their entire 2011 feature film lineup, and there’s isn’t a lot of note, with regards to this blog’s focus.

When I spotted Casey Wilson at last night's ABC mixer, I thought "lesbian commune." I remembered that the ex-SNL comedian had put out a casting call last August in Albany, New York for her upcoming film, Ass Backwards, specifically hoping for a bunch of lesbians, or women to play lesbians. So I had to ask what it was all about.
"It's a female road trip comedy. R-rated," Casey said. "My friend (co-writer/co-star June Diane Raphael) and I, we go on a road trip — these two really misguided girls — and they're completely broke but they are dressed like they have a million dollars. And they end up broken down in the middle of nowhere and then this amazing biker picks them up." The biker is played by Sandy Martin (Big Love, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).
"They think it's a man," Casey said, "but then they still are attracted to her.
