From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

In the wake of Terrifier‘s breakout success, star Jenna Kanell has gone on to book supporting roles in the likes of Renfield, WandaVision, The Bye Bye Man, and NCIS: New Orleans — but Art the Clown casts a long shadow. Kanell reconciles her unconventional journey while holding a mirror up to the industry in Faceless After Dark, which she co-wrote with Todd Jacobs for director Raymond Wood, both frequent collaborators.
Kanell stars as Bowie Davidson, an actress struggling to break out from the shackles of B-horror after starring in a killer clown movie. She’s no stranger to fandom — peddling herself at conventions, recording Cameo videos, combating social media harassment — but when an obsessive fanatic in a clown mask breaks into her house, Bowie assumes the role of the final girl to fight back against her oppressors.
The home invasion is ostensibly propelling toward a tense game of cat-and-mouse between Bowie and her stalker,...

Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.
Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.
That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.
Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

Creator/director of the "Terrifier" series, Damien Leone originally developed Art the Clown as one of many ghoulish antagonists for the short films "The 9th Circle" (2008) and "Terrifier" (2011). The blood-thirsty antagonist, who was inspired by iconic horror killers, then took center stage in 2013's "All Hallows' Eve," wherein two kids and their babysitter discover an unmarked VHS tape that showcased the homicidal clown's gruesome deeds. But it wasn't until 2016 that David Howard Thornton took over the role from the original Art actor, Mike Gianelli, for the first official "Terrifier" movie.
In the film, Art wreaks havoc on Halloween night as he hunts down Tara Heyes (Jenna Kanell) and her sister Victoria (Samantha Scaffidi). Unfortunately, as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it in his "Terrifier 2" review, the first official installment in the "Terrifier" canon was "little more than a plotless, storyless, valueless excuse to showcase gore and not much else." "Terrifier" is the little slasher series that could. Writer-director Damien Leone harnessed decades of horror movie history to imbue his low-budget breakout with not just heaps of blood and uber-violence, but a subversive sense of whimsy as well. As a result, "Terrifier" remains one of this century's most successful indie horror titles. Its sequel, "Terrifier 2," carved out a success story all its own. In October 2022, that second installment pulled more than $10 million at the domestic box office. For reference, "Terrifier 2" is a two-and-a-half hour long gorefest. That's no chump change for what's arguably the bloodiest slasher movie of the decade.
It all goes back to the original, however, and without "Terrifier," there would be no franchise (including the upcoming Christmas-themed "Terrifier 3"). Damien Leone first conceived of Art the Clown for the 2008 short "The 9th Circle." Art would later appear in one additional short and two anthology segments...

Celebrity-fan encounters have become the internet’s bread-and-butter in 2023; every user-driven rabbit hole from Reddit to the gossip pages of Instagram (shoutout to deuxmoi) is full of supposed insider info on who’s a sweetheart, and who’s an Irl monster. There’s almost a currency to having met a famous person, and everyone online, anonymous or not, is keen to sell their story – mostly just for clout over any actual cash. So whether you’re an actor or a musician, or even just a familiar-face from a meme, the message is the same: play nice, or be prepared to face the social media backlash.
It’s a dangerous world to navigate, especially for working actors like Faceless After Dark star Jenna Kanell, who co-writes this sharp, scathing home invasion thriller about just that, an often deadly relationship with the spotlight.

Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features Faceless After Dark (Jenna Kanell), The Moor (Chris Cronin & Sophia La Porta) & Suitable Flesh (Joe Lynch).

For an indie horror movie that went out into the world unrated, Terrifier 2 was a massive hit last year, earning $15.1 million at the box office on a budget of $250,000. And that success has not only paved the way for Terrifier 3, which will have a substantially higher budget and is aiming for a fall 2024 release, but it has also earned a theatrical re-release for its predecessor, the first Terrifier. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have announced that Terrifier will be playing on around 700 screens as of this Wednesday, July 19th. This is the widest theatrical release Terrifier has ever received and it will be playing for a few days. To see if it will be playing near you, check This Link.

Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.
The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.
Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…
1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.
Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Renfield opens with Nicolas Cage’s Dracula and Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield inserted into footage from Tod Browning’s 1931 classic adaptation of Dracula, a concept that came from McKay after boarding the project.

Renfield is a horror comedy directed by Chris McKay, starring Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Nicolas Cage.
Di you love Nicolas Cage when you were kids? Were you one of those who had a poster of him in your room because he was so awesome, but deep inside you thought he would never win an Oscar? You were wrong, just like I was wrong about Renfield thinking it was doomed to be a bad movie.
Not at all. It’s not excellent, but it’s hilarious, full of fights, special effects and it knows how to take nothing seriously, just like good old Nicolas Cage does with his career.
Some hilarious action-packed cinematic monkeyshines.

Dread and Iconic Events Releasing Strike Deal for Theatrical Re-Release of Terrifier: "Dread, the L.A.-based distribution and financing company Epic Pictures’ specialty horror label, announced today plans to re-release Terrifier, Damien Leone’s 2016 slasher horror — that would lead to the smash box-office hit Terrifier 2 — nationwide in theaters with Iconic Events, who handled the explosively successful rollout of the sequel last year. Terrifier will return to the big screen on July 19, 2023 and play in over 700 theater locations across the U.S.
Following a string of earlier films that first introduced Leone’s now-iconic villain Art the Clown to audiences, Terrifier saw the role first taken by David Howard Thornton, who took up the mantle once again in the film’s breakout sequel, cementing the character’s place in horror canon legacy.

In the wake of last Halloween’s smash hit box office success of Terrifier 2, Dread has announced today that they’re bringing the original Terrifier to theaters this summer.
Damien Leone’s cult slasher slices into 700 theaters nationwide on July 19, 2023. As THR notes, this is “the widest release the horror feature has ever received.”
“When Damien Leone and his team brought Terrifier to Dread Central years ago, we knew that the film was something incredibly special and astoundingly terrifying in the best way possible. Now, six years later, with millions of Terrifier fans worldwide, we are excited to once again unleash on the big screen this blood-soaked homage to old-school horror and the insanity of Art the Clown,” said Epic Pictures and Dread CEO and owner Patrick Ewald in a statement.
Added Steve Menkin, president of Iconic Events, “Every once in a while, a film genre spawns a generational talent who breaks the mold.

Nicholas Hoult has had enough of working for Dracula in the new trailer for “Renfield”.
Hoult stars as Dracula’s henchman, Renfield, who “wonders what life would be like without serving his dark master” in the newly-released teaser.
Nicolas Cage takes on the role of Dracula, who turns up at the end of Hoult’s therapy session at the end of the teaser in all his glory to devour some more victims.

Renfield says at the start of the clip, “I need to get out of a toxic relationship,” before turning to those in the group session for support, unbeknownst to them who he was really talking about.
“I just want a normal life again,” Hoult says as Dracula barks his orders.
At one point in the teaser, Hoult uses his superpowers to fight some robbers with guns in a bar.

Little is known about this movie as it is still in production. We do know it is a comedy horror film that extracts one of the ancillary characters in Bram Stoker‘s 1987 Gothic horror novel ‘Dracula’. Earlier this year, Kevin Smith purchased the movie theatre he used to go to in his youth, the Atlantic Moviehouse at 82 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and turned it into Smodcastle Cinemas. Last month, Bill MacKay (@Barbarian_Pug on Twitter) tweeted out the idea of Smith hosting a Terrifier double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas, with director and cast Q&As… and Smith quickly turned that idea into a reality! There will indeed be a Terrifier and Terrifier 2 double feature at Smodcastle Cinemas on December 10th, starting at 7pm, and tickets are available at This Link. The price to attend the double feature will make a lot of sense to Smith fans: it’s 37 dollars.
Smith will be moderating Q&As with the cast and crew for both of the films.
On December 10th!
Come get scared shitless at @SmodCinemas when we host the cast & crew of @TerrifierFilm!

With "Terrifier 2" tearing up the box office as of late, many horror fans may want to go back and check out the outlandish makeup effects featured in Damien Leone's original "Terrifier" film. Before Art the Clown had become a popular Halloween tattoo and a neo-slasher icon, he was just a lowly hitchhiker on the side of a New Jersey highway waiting to pick out his first victims. One of those victims in "Terrifer" was Victoria Heyes (Samantha Scaffidi), the sister of Tara Heyes (Jenna Kanell) who winds up completely deformed by the end of the film. In retrospect, Victoria gets off light seeing as how another character named Dawn suffers a gruesome death at the hands of Art the Clown.
The fate that Victoria experiences is too graphic for even the most desensitized gorehounds, and Leone has expressed remorse in the past that her character is most remembered for that drawn out,...

Dead by Midnight (Y2Kill) is the unexpected follow-up to Dead by Midnight (11pm Central). And I say unexpected because despite being a fun collection of stories, it pretty much stayed under everyone’s radar. But enough people did see it that a second film got greenlighted, and with a big enough budget to include a couple of genre heavyweights.
The film opens with The Mistress of Midnight sitting around hell, googling for reviews of the first film and unleashing her wrath on those who didn’t give it a thumbs up.

If you take one look at Jenna Kanell’s acting resume, you’ll probably be pretty impressed. Although her name may not be as widely known as some other people in the industry, Jenna has had the kind of career that lots of actors can only imagine. In the years since making her on screen debut in 2010, she has gone on to earn nearly 50 acting credits. The last couple of year shave been especially good for Jenna. In 2020 she starred in the series Jenna Misconstrues Everything and in 2021 she landed a role in the popular Disney+ series, WandaVision.

Terrifer is an upcoming film from director Damien Leone. In the film, a killer clown attacks three young women, on Halloween night. The violence and terror only fuels this clown's desire for more blood. As well, Terrifier is being released by both Epic Pictures Releasing and Dread Central Presents. The film stars: Jenna Kanell (The Bye Bye Man), Catherine Corcoran (Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1 & 2), Margaret Reed, and David Howard Thornton. This slasher feature begins a theatrical run in mid-March, followed by a U.S. nationwide release on Digital platforms. A preview of the film's upcoming release is hosted here. The Red Band trailer for Terrifier shows many of the film's more gruesome images. The clown's victims are confident at first, in that they can handle a scary clown. But, when the weapons are out, the girls flee into a warehouse - for dissection! Terrifier brings its central character from 2013's All Hallows' Eve.

A horror movie slated to open in October means buzz and solid expectations. It used to be you rarely saw the genre at any other time — back before studios discovered how cheap they were to produce and how palatable they were to teens looking for something to do on a Friday night whether it proved enjoyably worthwhile or not. Securing this coveted spot was therefore a win for Stx Entertainment and their film The Bye Bye Man, either through hard work or sheer luck. Watching it shift up from October 14th, 2016 to June 3rd may have even been a testament to its success until yet another shuffle to January 13th, 2017. Don’t let the connotations Friday the 13th conjures fool you. The Bye Bye Man was dumped.

While the idea of an entire movie about people getting killed for saying its title isn’t the easiest sell, “The Bye Bye Man” rises above those low expectations. The husband and wife team of director Stacy Title and screenwriter Jonathan Penner (“The Last Supper,” “Let The Devil Wear Black”) don’t break any rules, but they still manage to deliver an effective genre effort.
