Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired North American rights to Coast, a coming-of-age drama starring Fatima Ptacek (Dora the Explorer), stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo (Cristela), Academy Award winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) and Ciara Bravo (Cherry), with plans to release it day-and-date in theaters and on VOD on April 8. Vmi Worldwide, which is handling international sales and distribution, will rep the film at the Berlin Film Festival when it kicks off on February 10.
Set in a farming community along the Central California coast, the story revolves around 16-year-old Abby (Ptacek), who is desperate to escape the trappings of small-town life. Stuck in a loop of sameness, she refuses to believe the lives of those around her are all she has to look forward to, longing for something more. Everything changes when she falls for the lead singer of a touring rock band and must decide whether to leave her family and friends...

The WGA East today announced the second crop of fellows for its Made in NY Writers Room, a program that provides mentorship, industry access and financial support to underrepresented writers who live in New York City and seek to tell stories that are not often depicted on television. The program is a joint effort with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the city’s Department of Small Business Services.
This year’s 10 fellows, who will each receive a $10,800 stipend, are playwright Harron Atkins, showrunner’s assistant Yasmine Cadet, writer’s production assistant Joseph Capuana, writer and storyboard artist Michael Lee, writer Catherine Loerke, comedy promo writer Vincent Lopez, comedian Jordan Mendoza, playwright and librettist Jerome Parker, children’s television writer Michael Rodrigue, and entertainment journalist Pilot Viruet. More than half of the inaugural group of fellows are actively working in the industry.

The 3rd Annual NYC Web Fest announced its jury members today, a diverse array of entertainers and producers from film, TV, stage and the digital space. New members of the jury include Alex Cirillo & Dani Faith Leonard, co-founders of the film & media incubator “Big Vision Empty Wallet”; award-winning actor Tony Denison, co-star of TNT drama “Major Crimes,” a spin-off of “The Closer”; filmmaker Xavier Burgin; and “Black & Sexy TV” actor Austin Jaye. Film and media incubator Big Vision Empty Wallet is launching a new incentive program to boost visibility of women, people of color, and Lgbt individuals in film and television. For storytellers and media makers of marginalized demos, Kickstart Diversity—whose submission process launches today, Oct. 5—can help your work reach your audience. The company also announced its inaugural crop of projects today, which was selected via private submission earlier this year. They include work with Spike Lee, Michael C.
