Disney’s upcoming reboot of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day appears to have a slightly different title, according to a Copyright Office entry.
Here’s a mildly interesting snippet of news for you. First announced in 2020, Disney’s reboot of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has been in the works for some time now. Another film based on Judith Viorst’s popular children’s book, it differs from the original by making its central family Latinx.
According to an entry on the US Copyright Office, this upcoming reboot has a slightly different, albeit entirely logical, title. It’s called Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.
The entry also confirms that Marvin Lemus is directing the new movie, and that the cast will include Thomas Nemer (who plays the titular Alexander), Eva Longoria, Jessie Garcia, Cristo Fernandez...

Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.
Pride Month offers “Masc,” a consideration of “trans men, butch lesbians, and gender-nonconforming heroes” onscreen; the Michael Koresky-curated Queersighted returning with a study of the gay best friend; and the 20-film “LGBTQ+ Favorites.” Louis Garrel’s delightful The Innocent (about which I talked to him here), the director’s cut of Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation, and Stanley Kwan’s hugely underseen Lan Yu make streaming premieres, while Araki’s Totally F***ed Up and Mysterious Skin also get a run. The 2009 horror comedy “Jennifer’s Body” is set to get a reboot…on-stage with a live table read courtesy of Film Independent and Mubi.
Director Karyn Kusama, who initially helmed the film, is set to direct this interpretation which will take place at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ Bram Goldsmith Theater on April 11th.
No other casting information is known, though considering the caliber of past Film Independent live reads — such as their presentation of Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” back in February — it should include several A-list performers.
The feature told the story of Anita “Needy” Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried) who discovers her more popular best friend Jennifer (Megan Fox) is a succubus feeding on the young boys of their high school. The film wasn’t a box office success at the time but has undergone a cultural reevaluation over the last decade with many praising Kusama...

Exclusive: Actor and producer Karrie Martin Lachney signed with Paradigm for representation in all areas.
Lachney made a splash with her portrayal of Ana Morales in the Netflix dramedy Gentefied, created by Linda Yvette Chávez and Marvin Lemus. The series followed a multigenerational, Mexican American family living and loving in Los Angeles, co-starring Joaquin Cosio, J.J. Soria, and Carlos Santos. It ran for two seasons before it was canceled in January.
Lachney’s portrayal of Ana represented experiences that mirror that of many second-generation Latinos whose parents sacrificed everything in search of the American dream— a point of view rarely shown on television.
Ana had to prioritize her familial responsibilities while still a young woman herself over her own dreams and desires. She was challenged at every corner with having to choose between an upcoming art show opportunity, spending time with her girlfriend, and being a support to her...

Linda Yvette Chávez, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of Gentefied, shared a personal essay Friday following Netflix’s decision to cancel the Latinx dramedy series after two seasons.
In the emotional letter to fans posted on Instagram next to a quote by Theodore Roosevelt, Chávez, who co-created, exec produced and co-ran the series with Marvin Lemus, spoke of the “small acts of revolutionary love” that helped her embrace her Mexican heritage and fight for representation in front and behind the camera.
Chavez spoke of the millions of people Gentefied has reached around the world, “millions who saw themselves and their families on screen for the first time.”
She took a subtle dig at the proverbial “Netflix algorithms,” a reference to the streamer’s reliance on analyzing viewership and other data vs. cost when making renewal decisions.

Netflix on Thursday canceled Gentefied. A day later, America Ferrera, who executive produced the half-hour Latinx dramedy alongside creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, shared her reaction to Netflix’s decision on Instagram.
“So sad that our beloved Gentefied has reached its end,” she wrote. “I have nothing but immense pride for this gorgeous show and the incredibly talented humans who came together to put something new and deeply authentic on our screens.”
Ferrera praised Lemus and Chávez who “valued and loved us enough to write us into the story with humor, complexity and heart.”
Gentefied, hailed for its authentic Latino representation, could not attract big enough audience for Netflix to order another season as Season 2 did not crack the streamer’s Top 10.
But while Gentefied’s run was ultimately cut short, the show went farther than many other series efforts featuring underrepresented voices and stories. Ferrera was grateful that Gentefied,...

Netflix has canceled “Gentefied,” a half-hour Latino comedy-drama from Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, produced by America Ferrera. Season 2 of “Gentefied,” starring JJ Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquin Cosio, was just released on the streamer this past November.
“Gentefied” followed the lives of three Mexican American cousins in Boyle Heights who must tackle gentrification, borders, babies and family separation, all while attempting to save their grandpa’s taco shop. “Gentefied” also starred Karrie Martin, Annie Gonzalez, Julissa Calderon, and even Ferrera herself played a character on the show.
Critics overwhelmingly liked the series when it debuted in 2020. The review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes gave “Gentefied” a score of 96% on the “Tomatometer,” and an average audience score of 76%. The last highly-rated Latino-focused sitcom that Netflix slashed from its programming slate was Gloria Calderón Kellett’s reboot of “One Day at a Time.”

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew half-hour Latinx dramedy Gentefied for a third season. The decision comes two months after the release of show’s second season on November 10.
The show never appeared in the Netflix Top 10 with the new season, which likely played a part in Netflix’s cancellation decision, which typically factors in cost, viewership and critical acclaim.
Gentefied, from creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, follows East Los Angeles Latinos on their respective and collective search for the American Dream. Season 2 tackles Erik Morales (JJ Soria) and his cousin Chris’s (Carlos Santos) struggle to keep Pops (Joaquin Cosio) in the country while dealing with new love, new babies, estranged fathers and tracking down Bad Bunny at a Halloween party. Wilmer Valderrama is developing a TV series based on the Disney western Zorro for Disney Branded Television. Valderrama is set to executive produce and star as Don Diego de la Vega and his alter ego, the titular masked horseman.
The project is executive produced by former Disney Branded Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh under the multiyear production deal for his banner at Disney General Entertainment, and John Gertz of Zorro Productions, Inc.
“We’re reimagining this Disney classic as a compelling period piece, set in Pueblo de Los Angeles, but told in a very modern telenovela style — with richly drawn contemporary characters and relationships set against the action, drama, suspense, and humor of the original, iconic Zorro,” said Ayo Davis, President of Disney Branded Television. “Wilmer shares our commitment to reflect the interesting and rich diversity of the human experience and we look forward to delivering a...

Netflix's dramedy Gentefied, which debuted on the streamer in February 2020, is back for another round! Created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez, and executive produced by America Ferrera, the series follows the story of a Latinx family in East Los Angeles as they grapple with saving their family's restaurant, Mama Fina's Taco, while staying ahead of the rapid gentrification in their neighborhood, Boyle Heights. Three cousins - Ana (Karrie Martin), Chris (Carlos Santos), and Erik (J.J. Soria) - and their Abuelo Casimiro (Joaquín Cosío) continue to fight the odds stacked against them in the second installment, which hit Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 10. But will their journey span past this season?
Though Netflix has not canceled the series thus far, they have not renewed it for a season three yet, either. But that's par for the course for most of the shows on the streaming platform.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched Season 2 of “Gentefied,” streaming now on Netflix.
When “Gentefied” co-creator Marvin Lemus was a teenager, he testified on his undocumented mother’s behalf so that she could receive her green card. Decades later, under the administration of President Donald Trump, he found himself “terrified” that she’d be ripped away from him.
“I was hearing all of these stories that even green card holders were getting taken by Ice and sometimes being held for long periods of time,” Lemus tells Variety.
After spending a long time “pestering her to get her citizenship,” she finally did — while Lemus was breaking the second season of his Netflix series. “It was such an emotional release,” he recalls. “I was just so used to this being a part of my life — knowing that my mom’s status wasn’t always stable or safe or meant security.

It’s been over a year since audiences met the Morales clan and their Boyle Heights, Los Angeles taco shop, Mama Fina’s. At the end of Season 1, the group knew that Mama Fina’s was on death’s door, set to be bought out by a gentrifying white woman interested in turning it into a pop-up shop. On top of that, family patriarch Casimiro, aka Pop (Joaquín Cosio), had been picked up on a routine traffic violation and was being detained by Ice. With so much tension built up, creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez could have made this a heavily dramatized season. And it is, no doubt, but “Gentefied” always retains the sense of heart and community that made Season 1 so special.

When Linda Yvette Chavez, the showrunner of Netflix’s “Gentefied,” took her mom and brothers to New York during a press tour, she knew her show was a success.
“This is the first time I’ve seen something where I see working-class communities where it looks like us and it feels like us,” Chavez recalled her mother saying. “I could tell whoever made it wasn’t afraid or ashamed of being poor, they weren’t ashamed of who they were, they weren’t ashamed of being Mexican, really Mexican.
“That filled my whole heart,” Chavez said. “That was exactly what we were trying to do.”
Along with Chavez, showrunners Steven Canals (“Pose”), Marvin Lemus (“Gentefied”), Anthony Sparks (“Queen Sugar”) and Erika Green Swafford (“New Amsterdam”) sat down virtually on Thursday to discuss how their shows are part of changing the narrative around poverty. In a competitive situation, Marvin Lemus has signed with Verve, Variety has learned exclusively.
Lemus, a Mexican-Guatemalan filmmaker, will continue to be repped by The Mission Entertainment in addition to Verve. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Lemus asked the agency if they would “go steady” and join “Team Marvin all the way.” They may hang the email on the agency’s wall once they return post-covid.
Lemus most recently co-created the Netflix series “Gentefied,” which is executive produced by America Ferrera and MacRo. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017 and launched on Netflix in 2020. It was renewed for a second season last May. Lemus will return as co-showrunner on Season 2 alongside fellow co-creator Linda Yvette Chávez.
His past credits include direting the short “Vámonos.” It was screened in over 40 film festivals and won awards at NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, Frameline40, and an Imagen Award.

Film Independent’s decision to add TV categories to its annual Spirit Awards was widely cheered on Tuesday by network, studio and streamer executives, who now have another opportunity to campaign their prestige projects for a respected prize.
But here’s perhaps the biggest game changer: The Spirit Awards will only honor new series, limiting the competition to shows in their freshman seasons, via the best new scripted series and best new non-scripted or documentary series categories. That distinction means returning anthology series, even if they boast a new cast and storyline (like the fourth edition of FX’s “Fargo”) won’t be eligible.
The Spirit Awards’ three new TV performer categories — male performance in a scripted series, female performance in a scripted series and ensemble cast in a scripted series — will also be limited to first-year programs only.
None of the major TV awards — including the Emmys, Golden Globes...

“Gentefied” will be coming back for eight more episodes.
Netflix has renewed the half-hour dramedy for season 2, which will consist of two fewer episodes than its freshman outing. In addition, the cast and crew are set to reunite for a virtual table read on May 20.
The table read, hosted by comedian George Lopez, will aim to raise awareness for Proyecto Pastoral, a non-profit profit in Boyle Heights that is looking to address the impacts of Covid-19 on low income families and residents in the neighborhood.
Created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez (two Chicano first-generation writers), “Gentefied” is adapted from the 2017 Sundance webseries of the same name. The bilingual series is about family, community, brown love, and the displacement that disrupts it all. It centers around three Mexican-American cousins struggling to chase the American Dream, even while that same dream threatens the things they hold most dear: their neighborhood,...

Some of us prefer to catch up on TV shows that have been in our queues such as The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere and the wildly popular Tiger King while other shows on the menu include reliable favorites such as 30 Rock.
