When Intuit Dome — the new Inglewood home of the Los Angeles Clippers that billionaire owner Steve Ballmer has spent upward of $2 billion constructing — opens in August, it will unveil not only a state-of-the-art sports and concert venue, but also a high-end VIP club.

Superstar Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant is on the move in a trade that will rattle the NBA and send oddsmakers scrambling to reset the odds.
With a 3 Pm NBA trade deadline looming on Thursday, the Nets agreed to trade superstar Durant to the Phoenix Suns. Durant is currently out with a sprained McL, but is expected to return this month.
The deal sends Durant and forward T.J. Warren to the Suns, with the Nets getting back Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and a 2028 pick swap. They’ll get unprotected picks in 2023, 2025, 2027 and 2029.
The deal means Brooklyn is heading back into a long rebuild. They had hopes of playing for a title when they brought together fellow superstar guards Kyrie Irving and Durant in the summer of 2019, adding guard James Harden the following year.
But the trio played just 73 games together for various reasons. A disgruntled...

“I gave up 4 years, 100-something million deciding to be unvaccinated,” said Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving said at the team’s press day yesterday. “That was the decision, it was: contract [and] get vaccinated or be unvaccinated and there’s a level of uncertainty of your future — whether you’re going to be in this league, whether you’re going to be on this team — for this decision.”
Irving refused to be vaccinated last season, even as New York City’s mandate required it for Brooklyn Nets home games. That kept him out of Brooklyn’s rotation for much of the season, until the requirement was lifted in March.
Irving indicated that the decision was not an easy one.
“I had to deal with that real life circumstance of losing my job while trying to secure my future for myself and my family.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver criticized the New York City mandate that prevents unvaccinated athletes on area teams — specifically the Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving — from playing in home games, yet allows unvaccinated players on visiting teams to take the court at the city’s arenas.
“This law in New York, the oddity of it to me is that it only applies to home players,” Silver told ESPN’s Get Up on Wednesday. “I think if ultimately that rule is about protecting people who are in the arena, it just doesn’t...

Updated: New York Nets superstar Kyrie Irving spoke to the media today for the first time since it would be announced he would rejoin the team, which benched him in October after he refused to get a Covid vaccination, which is required for home games under New York City guidelines. Irving could have played away games in cities that didn’t have such a mandate.
Irving said he understood the team’s decision and “respected it” after he looked at it from their perspective.
“I knew the consequences,” he said. “I wasn’t prepared for them by any stretch of the imagination.” He also said he was grateful to be able to return, even in the limited capacity of playing only road games.

In 2020, the NBA and the NHL were the most assertive major American sports leagues in their efforts to contain the impact of Covid on their seasons. Both leagues employed “bubbles” that sequestered players and employed aggressive testing regimens to continue their seasons. About a year-and-a-half later, their paths have diverged.
Today, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league has “no plans” to halt games, despite the lightning-quick spread of the Omicon variant.
“No plans right now to pause the season,” Silver told host Malika Andrews on ESPN’s NBA Today. “We’ve, of course, looked at all the options, but frankly we’re having trouble coming up with what the logic would be behind pausing right now.”
That logic would have to justify losing one of the crown jewels of the league’s yearly TV schedule: Its Christmas Day block of games on ABC.

The league earlier in the week announced stepped-up safety protocols, including a requirement for all players and personnel to wear masks at team facilities.
The Washington Football Team’s game with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday has moved to Tuesday. The Las Vegas Raiders-Cleveland Browns contest on Saturday is now set for Monday at 5 p.m. Et, creating an unusual late-season doubleheader.

Battle Of The Platforms, a first-of-its-kind boxing event featuring YouTubers and TikTokers facing off in the ring -- with a headline fight between Austin McBroom and Bryce Hall -- reportedly lost at least $10 million. Now, various participants involved in the venture -- including the aforementioned fighters, producers, and investors -- are seeking to get paid their rightful due.
Billboard reports that the event cost $20 million to produce, but has only brought in between $6.5 million and $10 million in revenues. Accordingly, investors (including NBA star James Harden), producers, and 15 boxers have yet to be compensated. Hall, for his part, was promised $5 million to participate in the fight.
Both Hall and McBroom predicted that the event would generate between 1.7 million and 2.3 million pay-per-view packages on LiveXLive, which is where the event aired. With packages priced at $50 each, that would have accounted for $85 million to $115 million in revenues. But the event only sold 135,000 packages,...

It wasn’t a great night for reigning champs the LA Lakers or past champs the Golden State Warriors, but the opening of the 2020-2021 season last night was great for the NBA and TNT.
Played under Covid-19 safety protocols in the City of Angels and the Republic of Brooklyn, the tip-off doubleheader snagged 2.9 million viewers in Tuesday’s primetime, according to Nielsen.
With the Clippers taking down LeBron James and the Lakers 116-109 and the now Kevin Durant starring Nets schooling Steph Curry and crew 125 – 99, last night’s Opening Night was up 1% over the 2019 tip-off on October 22 last year. Coming just over two months after the Lakers and the NBA wrapped up the coronavirus elongated season in the bubble playoffs, Tuesday’s overall tip-off viewership was up 5% from the July restart of the 2019-2020 season.

The National Basketball Assn. has postponed tonight’s Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder game, the first of the season for both teams. The Rockets do not have the league-required eight available players because of Covid-19 tests and restrictions.
Three Rockets players had tests that were positive or inconclusive for the coronavirus. Four other players are quarantined under the contact tracing protocol, and Chris Clemons is injured.
The postponement will likely not be the only game adjustment to come on the schedule. The league has already started later than usual and cut back on the number of games. It has also mandated that no fans are allowed to attend.
However, it is not isolating teams in a bubble, as it did for the playoffs in Orlando. That means players and staff run the risk of exposure even under the best of precautions.
Daily testing and severe contact tracing are in line.

After making it through the three-month Orlando bubble without a single case of Covid-19, the NBA couldn’t make it through two days of their out-of-the-bubble 2020-21 season before the virus wreaked havoc.
The league announced that Wednesday night’s game between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder has been postponed due to health and safety reasons.
In short, the Rockets did not have the minimum eight players available for tonight’s game. The matchup was set to take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, one of the few venues allowing fans to attend in person.
In its announcement, the league said three Rockets players returned either positive or inconclusive Covid tests. Further contract tracing led to four additional players — including star players John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins — having to quarantine. The NBA offseason is always compelling, delivering at least a couple “Game of Thrones”-level trades and free agent signings each year. And even though the offseason moved from summer to fall because of Covid, that hasn’t slowed down the news cycle any. The latest: the Houston Rockets traded Russell Westbrook to the Washington Wizards for John Wall and a future first round draft pick.
This news took NBA Twitter by storm on Wednesday night, with pretty much everyone unloading joke after joke about the trade. On paper, it’s not a trade that seems like it would change much for either team — both Westbrook and Wall are high-scoring, ball-hog point guards heading to teams with high-scoring, ball-hog shooting guards (James Harden for the Rockets and Bradley Beal for the Wizards).
But in the NBA, chemistry is just as important as superstars, and maybe the Westbrook and Wall will...

Vanessa Bryant gave a moving speech as she honored her husband, Kobe, and daughter Gianna during their public memorial service on Monday. As Vanessa took to the stage at the Los Angeles Staples Center, she struggled to hold back tears as she addressed the crowd. After receiving a round of applause of support, she began to share sweet anecdotes about her family members. She talked about how even though Gianna was a "daddy's girl" at heart, "she loved her mama" and was one of her best friends. She then went on to talk about Kobe, sharing what a great father and husband he was during their nearly 19-year marriage.
On Jan. 26, Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter died in a helicopter crash with seven other people - Ara Zobayan, Sarah and Payton Chester, Christina Mauser, and Keri, Alyssa, and John Altobelli - in Calabasas, CA.

The National Basketball Association continued to dig deeper into a public relations hole today, as an executive shut down a question from a CNN anchor on the league’s China problem.
CNN’s Christina Macfarlane was cut off at a Japan press conference after an exhibition game between the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors. The Rockets have been at the center of a dispute that started when one of its executives, general manager Daryl Morey, tweeted support for the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.
Macfarlane attempted to ask Rockets stars James Harden and Russell Westbrook whether they would feel comfortable speaking out on political and social issues in the future after the uproar from China in reaction to Morey and the events of this week. The unidentified Rockets media relations person stopped them from answering – even though Harden appeared ready to respond – saying that “basketball questions only” were the only permissible path.

To capitulate to Chinese censorship, or not to capitulate? That’s the billion-dollar question increasingly facing U.S.entertainment companies that wish to retain their access to China’s enormous 1.4 billion-person market while maintaining a veneer of integrity in the eyes of supporters back home.
A “South Park” episode and a single tweet from an NBA employee have sparked a larger debate on how U.S. firms should do business with the Middle Kingdom. Senior U.S. politicians and public figures such as Hillary Clinton have waded into the controversy, while China has struck back by canceling broadcasts and pulling U.S. content from its internet.

A tweet by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in support of Hong Kong protesters has created tensions between the NBA and the Chinese government.
On Friday, Morey tweeted his support of Hong Kong, writing in a since-deleted tweet: “Fight for Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong.” It was immediately criticized by the Chinese government. The Chinese Basketball Association (Cba) suspended all cooperation with the Rockets, which is among the most popular in China. The Chinese Media Group, the country’s state-controlled media arm, said it was “deeply shocked by the erroneous comments” made by Morey. Tencent Sports, which signed a five-year, $1.5 billion to continue as the NBA’s streaming partner in China, said it would no longer offer live-streams of Rockets games and suspended all news coverage of the team.
