Other LateNighters performing at one of the festival’s 300 shows at 35+ venues include current and former Daily Show correspondents Dulcé Sloan, Ronny Chieng, Roy Wood Jr, and Hasan Minhaj.
Then there are the SNL alums: Maya Rudolph, Melissa Villaseñor, Colin Quinn, Sarah Silverman, John Mulaney, Tim Robinson, Jay Mohr, Jay Pharoah, Darrell Hammond… the list goes on.
This will be the second time the streamer has put on the festival. Several events at the inaugural 2022 Netflix Is a Joke festival were eventually released on the streaming service, so it’s safe...

As we made abundantly clear earlier this week, the Film Independent Spirit Awards are—to coin a phrase—a safe space for comedy. From the early quips of a Buck Henry or Kevin Pollack to more recent outings by laughmongers ranging from A (Fred Armisen) to V (Melissa Villaseñor), only the funniest 1% of carbon-based lifeforms are permitted to direct awards show traffic from our proprietary beachfront dais.
This year is no exception, which is why we’re thrilled today to announce the host of the Spirit Awards, 2024 edition: the wonderful, hilarious Aidy Bryant! Yup—Lil’ Baby Aidy. Comedian. Showrunner. Writer. Actor. SNL alumna. National treasure. And now? Spirit Awards host. Welcome to the club, Aidy!

If the Film Independent Spirit Awards are famous for anything, it’s undoubtedly the vociferous championing of innovative emerging cinematic voices. If the Spirit Awards are famous for a second thing, it would perhaps be the show’s irreverent presentation—encompassing everything from our unlikely beachfront home to the show’s perverse embrace of abstract fashion choices, pet participation and (of course!) comedy. From Buck Henry’s early-day quips, to Kevin Pollak’s Miramax-era industry jibes, to the elaborate sketches, parodies and musical numbers of the modern era, at the Spirit Awards lulz are king.
So, with the host of the 2024 Spirit Awards confirmed and ready to be announced this Thursday, November 30 we thought it might be appropriate today to look back at some of our favorite gut-busting Spirit Awards comedy bits of yesteryear, from the occult blood sacrifice of Tiger Beat cutie-pies, to lesbian “glove lunch” cruising sessions, to a Canadian heavy metal invasion,...

At long last, “Saturday Night Live” is back. Season 48 of the NBC series was cut short due to the writers’ strike (hosts for the final two episodes of the season were going to be Kieran Culkin and Jennifer Coolidge), and Season 49 was delayed for the same reason, but once the WGA struck a deal with the studios, “SNL” writers — and cast members — went back to work.
Those who make it a habit to watch “SNL” when it’s on may be wondering, is “SNL” new tonight? Yes, “SNL” is new on Saturday, Oct. 14, which is the season premiere. Pete Davidson — who was due to host the May 6 show before the strike scrapped it — is the host with musical guest Ice Spice.
The episode will air live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. Et and stream live on Peacock coast-to-coast, at 8:30 p.m. Pt.

Comedian and actress Tina Fey cut her teeth at "Saturday Night Live" as both a cast member and eventually a head writer, where she also occupied the Weekend Update desk alongside Jimmy Fallon. If a new rumor is to be believed, there's a chance she might be returning to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, and it won't be for a revival of her "SNL"-inspired comedy series "30 Rock."
The New York Post is citing an unknown source who claims that Tina Fey is currently being courted to take over as the executive producer of "SNL" whenever series creator and longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels chooses to retire. Considering the source, we should take this with a grain of salt right now, because plenty of worthless rumors have come out of the New York Post over the years -- especially since another source in the same story says the rumors are untrue.

It was Ego Nwodim’s year to step up at “Saturday Night Live.” And did she ever. After a major cast turnover last season, Nwodim is now one of the veteran cast members on the show — and one of its most utilized on-screen.
Nwodim found herself elevated to senior status as long-running “SNL” stars such as Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Chris Redd and Melissa Villaseñor opted to exit. Cecily Strong followed suit midway through the season.
“To be part of such a strong, sturdy institution is already quite a wonder in itself,” Nwodim says. “But then to have people who are such pillars in that institution go, it feels like, ‘Is this going to work again? Is it going to feel the way it felt before? Is it going to feel better… or feel worse?’”
Cast changes have been a fact of life on “SNL” from the beginning.

You’ll have to wait a while for the next original “Live, from New York!”
“Saturday Night Live” will not produce any new episodes for the next while, owing to the writers’ strike called for by the WGA. The show’s next scheduled episode, slated for Saturday night and hosted by former cast member Pete Davidson with musical guest Lil Uzi Vert, will not take place, according to NBC. With a work stoppage in place, it’s quite possible that fans will not have any more new episodes of “SNL” in its 48th season. The show usually goes on its summer hiatus after May.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Night Court Season 1 Episode 12, “When Abby Met Gabby.”] Melissa Villaseñor loves being silly. To that end, appearing on NBC‘s Night Court reboot was a no-brainer. The Saturday Night Live alum played Gabby in the Tuesday, April 25 installment of the sitcom, and like much of Night Court‘s proceedings, the premise of the episode was silly in and of itself. When court clerk Neil’s (Kapil Talwalkar) high school crush, Gabby, appeared at the Manhattan court to finalize her divorce, Abby (Melissa Rauch) and Olivia (India de Beaufort) saw this as the perfect opportunity to nip Neil’s crush on Abby in the bud. As it turns out, Neil has a type. Abby and Gabby (a dentist) are two peas in a pod, their personalities exhibiting the same kind of quirk, goofiness, and positivity. Eventually, Abby feared that she and Gabby may have a little too much in common. Are...

Having transformed his body to play superhero Kingo in Marvel's "Eternals," then reinventing himself for Hulu's "Welcome To Chippendales" series, Kumail Nanjiani has truly ascended to star status. Since his 2017 autobiographical rom-com "The Big Sick" became a hit, Nanjiani has proven himself a versatile actor, capable of much more than the stereotypical roles he was previously offered. As he told GQ, "With brown people, there are very specific roles that we used to get. Either we're terrified or we're causing terror." Now, having become Marvel's first South Asian superhero and having consistently subverted Hollywood stereotypes, Nanjiani has come a long way.
But before he ascended in such spectacular fashion, Nanjiani spent many years as a standup comedian trying to break into the industry upon which he'd eventually have such an impact. Having moved to the states from his native Pakistan in the late '90s, the aspiring comedian eventually...

Sometimes "Saturday Night Live" is so funny that even the cast can't keep it together. They're trying with every fiber in their body not to laugh. Then it happens. The cast breaks character. One of them bursts into laughter, shattering the facade of their fictional scenario in a perfect embodiment of the joy of sketch comedy and the spontaneity of live television.
Sketches in which the cast breaks character are among the most iconic moments in the nearly five-decade history of "SNL." The occurrence is such a signature of the show that it gained its own musical tribute, performed by Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg during the show's 40th-anniversary gala. In that song, Sandler and Samberg mention there are multiple reasons one might break character: Either the sketch is killing (going well), or bombing (doing terribly). If the former, the actors' guards are down, and they are caught up in...

Ted Lasso fans have a little bit more to wait for the big Season 3 premiere, which will be this spring, Apple TV+ announced at TCA.
In the meantime, the streamer is teasing what’s ahead in a first-look photo (below) showing the titular character (Jason Sudeikis) face-to-face with Nathan Shelley (Nick Mohammed), who looks to still have his feet planted on the dark side. Standing between them in the back is another Ted Lasso villain, Rupert (Anthony Head).
In the Season 2 finale, Nathan unleashed all his built-up disappointments and frustrations after telling the media about Ted’s panic attacks in a power play. He then left Richmond to coach West Ham for Rupert (Head). Ted appears to not be holding a grudge but the duo may still have some work to do together to get past those resentments.

Thirty years after “Night Court” came to a decidedly dissatisfying conclusion following nine seasons, NBC is returning to the scene of the crime and punishment. A sequel rather than a reboot, the new series features Judge Abby Stone — daughter of the zany but popular Judge Harry Stone (the late Harry Anderson), who anchored the original sitcom — wielding the gavel. She’s as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as he was, though not as deft a magician; during one trick, she gets a Constitution stuck in her bra.
A refresher: When we last left our kooky courtroom family, everyone essentially had decided to go their separate ways — defense attorney Christine Sullivan (the late Markie Post) to a newly elected post in Congress, womanizing assistant district attorney Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) to chase after Christine, court clerk Mac Robinson (the late Charles Robinson) to film school, and Harry, well, still in night court. Wendie Malick, Melissa Villaseñor, comedian Pete Holmes and skaters Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are among the lengthy list of guest stars who will appear on Season 1 of “Night Court.”
“Night Court” is back in session for a reboot of the comedy series that first aired in 1984 for nine seasons. In this new take on the series, John Larroquette reprises his role as narcissistic prosecutor Dan Fielding, with Melissa Rauch (“The Big Bang Theory”) playing optimistic judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson).
“We’re obviously huge fans of the original, and it’s an incredible privilege to get to work in this world and tell stories with these characters,” the series’ executive producer, Dan Rubin, said. “But it’s also a challenge to keep this show its own thing and have it stand on its own two feet.”

Look who’s reporting for Night Court. Producers of the NBC comedy — a revival of the ‘80s series of the same name — announced a slate of guest stars for the show at NBCUniversal’s presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour ahead of the show’s premiere on Tuesday, January 17. Those guest stars are Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live), Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland), Pete Holmes (How We Roll), Faith Ford (Hope & Faith), Kurt Fuller (Supernatural), Stephnie Weir (MADtv), Lyric Lewis (A.P. Bio), and figure skaters, Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski, according to Variety. So far, only John Larroquette is returning from the original series — he’s coming back to play Dan Fielding again — though producers told reporters at the TCA press tour that they’re open to bringing back Richard Moll and Marsha Warfield to play Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon and Rosalind “Roz” Russell. NBC’s upcoming “Night Court” revival has set a new slate of guest stars including Melissa Villaseñor, Faith Ford, Pete Holmes, Kurt Fuller, Stephanie Weir, Lyric Lewis, Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski.
The news came during NBCUniversal’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter 2023 press tour, where star and executive producer Melissa Rauch called “Night Court” a “newboot” of the original, which ran on NBC from 1984 to 1992 and starred Harry Anderson as judge Harry T. Stone.
Along with announcing the new guest stars, with character details yet to be announced, producers said during the “Night Court” panel that they would be open to bringing back Richard Moll and Marsha Warfield. Moll and Warfield are the only living cast members from the original series besides John Laroquette, who reprises his role in the revival.
The new “Night Court” follows the late Harry Stone’s daughter, the unapologetically optimistic judge Abby Stone.

The cast of NBC’s Night Court will count with many guest stars in Season 1 including SNL‘s Melissa Villaseñor, Pete Holmes, Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski, Lyric Lewis, Kurt Fuller, and Stephnie Weir. They joined previously announced Faith Ford who will portray Abby Stone’s (Melissa Rauch) mom.
A revival of the original series created by Reinhold Weege, the multi-camera Night Court centers on unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry Stone (originally played by Harry Anderson), who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding, with John Larroquette reprising his role.

The Dec. 17 episode of "Saturday Night Live" wasn't just the last episode of 2022, it doubled as a goodbye to longtime cast member Cecily Strong. Her exit was announced on the official "SNL" Twitter prior to the episode's premiere. "Tonight we send off one of the best to ever do it. We'll miss you, Cecily!" the tweet read.
Strong first joined "SNL" in 2012 and quickly created a number of memorable recurring characters including The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party and the tough Cathy Anne, whom she made one final appearance as during the Weekend Update segment. "I'm a little emo tonight, because I'm here to say goodbye," the "Schmigadoon!" star said in character to Michael Che. When Che asked her why she was leaving, she joked, "turns out, prison."

Cecily Strong got an Elvis goodbye on Saturday when host Austin Butler — who was later joined by the rest of the SNL cast — ended the show with a performance of “Blue Christmas.”
Even Kenan Thompson had a solo during the bittersweet number for Strong, who is leaving Saturday Night Live after 11 seasons on the show. A post on social media from SNL‘s official Instagram account for the sketch show confirmed Strong’s exit earlier in the day.
Strong made her debut on SNL as a featured player on September 15, 2012, and was upped the following year starting with Season 39. The comedic star co-anchored the “Weekend Update” segment alongside Seth Meyers. When Meyers left to host Late Night, Strong continued to co-anchor the segment alongside SNL writer Colin Jost for one season.

Fans of Saturday Night Live were more than a little surprised when Cecily Strong, one of the sketch-comedy show’s strongest players, returned for its 48th season this October.
SNL had just experienced a wave of high-profile departures—Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Chris Redd, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Athari—prior to the start of the season, and Strong herself had not only taken the first few weeks of it off due to her one-woman show, but also her Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! had been...

"Saturday Night Live" has seen quite the exodus of cast members over the past year. At the end of season 47 back in May, the series bid farewell to Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney. Then, before season 48 began this past fall, Alex Moffat and Melissa Villaseñor left the series along with featured player Aristotle Athari. Finally, the last cast member to walk away from the series was Chris Redd, just a couple weeks before the show's season premiere. Unfortunately, one more cast member has announced their departure, and sadly, it will before the end of season 48.
The official "Saturday Night Live" account on Twitter announced that Cecily Strong would be saying farewell.

Cecily Strong is leaving “Saturday Night Live,” continuing the exodus of veteran “Not Ready For Prime Time Players” who have been parting ways with the venerable NBC program since last summer.
The NBC show announced that Saturday’s broadcast — expected to be “SNL”s “ last of 2022 — would also mark Strong’s final appearance as a member of the cast. She joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2012, and, since that time, has distinguished herself by playing such characters as The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party and with a louche impersonation of the Fox News opinion host Judge Jeanine Pirro. During her tenure on “SNL,” Strong even did a stint as an anchor on “Weekend Update” opposite Seth Meyers, then Colin Jost.

It’s an “exciting time” for women in comedy right now, per veteran comedian Ana Gasteyer, who was part of TheWrap’s Power Women Summit “Bring the Funny: Women in Comedy Roundtable” on Wednesday.
“It’s a very exciting time for comedy,” Gasteyer said. “When I started at ‘SNL,’ there were three women and they were definitely a minority, and now I just feel like there’s so much more opportunity for so many different kinds of voices… It’s not just the same 20 white guys.”
