1974 Abitur in Memmingen. Studied German and philosophy in Munich and Tübingen, 1980 Master's degree with focus on linguistics in Tübingen.
1981 to 1984 research assistant and consultant. 1989 to 1992 professor for linguistic communication at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart.
1980 founding member of the Green Party, June 2000 to December 2002 federal chairman of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN, since June 2000 member of the party council, June 2005 to September 2005 campaign manager of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN. 1984 to 1988 parliamentary party leader of the Greens in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg, there again 1992 to 2000 parliamentary party leader of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen.
Member of the Bundestag since 2002; January 2003 to February 2005 spokesman for the parliamentary group on economics and labor, since February 2005 spokesman on foreign policy and since October 2005 chairman of the parliamentary group Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN.
