Outlander has consistently entertained audiences with its gripping storylines. But those who have read Diana Gabaldon’s original books know that the adaptation has taken some liberties, creating unique twists on screen.
Whether altering characters or modifying key plot details, these changes have brought new dimensions to the tale, for better or worse. Here’s a closer look at the six times Outlander has made major changes from the books.
Jamie and Claire’s Battle of Culloden scars
As the Battle of Culloden loomed just moments away, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) faced the necessity of returning to the future. But at that moment, she was consumed by a desperate need to hold onto the memory of Jaime (Sam Heughan), seemingly destined to perish in the impending conflict.
Within the book’s pages, the characters etch their initials into each other’s hands, providing a tangible memento of their connection.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] Outlander‘s seventh season paves the way for America’s Revolutionary War, and on either side of the fight are Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and his son William (Charles Vandervaart). The gravity of this situation has yet to be fully unveiled as Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) flee Fort Ticonderoga at the end of Episode 5, “Singapore,” just as William bids the Hunters farewell to take up arms with the red coats. The brewing battle isn’t entirely new to the Frasers, though. As viewers have seen over the years, the couple, comprised of a World War II combat nurse-turned-doctor and an 18th-century Highlander warrior, have gone through the Battle of Culloden together and, more recently, the Battle of Alamance, where they lost Jamie’s godfather, Murtaugh (Duncan Lacroix). (Credit: Starz) Now, Jamie could be approaching a battlefront manned by his biological son William who still...

The men of Outlander — Sam Heughan, John Berry and Duncan Lacroix — took center stage at New York Comic Con Sunday but it was author Diana Gabaldon who delivered some of the best zingers at the panel.
When reflecting on the drama’s beginnings on Starz, Gabaldon recalled sitting with Heughan and Caitriona Balfe and talking about the people who love her books. “I have never had a bad fan experience,” she remembered telling the duo. “They are wonderful, intelligent and kind. Bear in mind, though, that people with real, mental derangements don’t have the intelligence to read one of the books. TV is a different thing.”
Gabaldon also brought the house down when explaining how she can track the mood on set by watching the dailies from each episode. “I can judge by how things are going by the number of times Sam or Caitriona says f–.”

It’s been nearly two years since Starz unrolled a new episode of “Outlander,” but fans can finally catch up with their favorite literary characters come-to-life when the sixth season debuts on March 6.
Based on the “Outlander” series of books by Diana Gabaldon, this show has seen a lot of change since it first debuted in 2014. Over the course of five seasons Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) have grown together and apart with centuries between them as they figured out their love, had their daughter Bree (Sophie Skelton), survived wars and bid farewell to loved ones.
Warning: Major spoilers for “Outlander” Season 5 follow below.
“Outlander” Season 5, which finished airing in May 2020, transitioned from a series about two separated lovers into a family drama that intertwined Bree and Roger (Richard Rankin) into the main story arcs. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched Season 5 of “Outlander.”
Safe to say, the fifth season of Starz’s “Outlander” was dramatic on an epic scale and ended pretty violently. With nearly two years’ time since last season’s finale aired on May 10, 2020, there is a lot to catch up on before viewers reconnect with the Fraser family. In a recent trailer for Season 6, it’s clear Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) — plus the rest of their brood — will have plenty of drama on the horizon as the Revolutionary War looms.
For those who haven’t the time (or time-traveling gemstones) to rewatch the last season of “Outlander” before the Season 6 premiere on Sunday, read on for a summary of Season 5’s biggest developments.

It’s no secret “Outlander” has had trouble breaking in at the Emmy Awards, with only four nominations over the past five years. That’s why fans of Starz’s romance epic are so excited to see Tobias Menzies nominated at the 2021 Emmys. Sure, he’s recognized for his role as Prince Philip on “The Crown,” and not for playing Frank Randall/Black Jack Randall on “Outlander,” but it still counts. Right?
As of this writing, Menzies is the first “Outlander” star, past or present, to be nominated for an Emmy Award for any project. Caitriona Balfe scored four Golden Globe noms and a Critics Choice bid for playing Claire Randall Fraser, while Sam Heughan has a Critics Choice nom and two Gold Derby Award wins on his mantel for playing Jamie Fraser. The Golden Globes love Caitriona Balfe. She has contended as Best TV Drama Actress for each of the first four seasons of “Outlander.” Indeed, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which hands out the Globes annually, just cannot quit the Irish actress.
Last year, Balfe was missing in action at the Globes because “Outlander” only aired four episodes within the 2019 eligibility window. This year, Balfe is back in contention and she might have her strongest chance yet to finally take home some hardware after losing her prior four Golden Globe contests to Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) in 2016, Claire Foy (“The Crown”) in 2017, Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) in 2018 and Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) in 2019.

The following contains spoilers for Outlander season 5.
Rewatching Outlander season 5 on the newly released DVD & Blu-ray set will remind fans once again how hard it was to say goodbye to Murtagh this past season. It turns out it was just as hard for Murtagh actor Duncan Lacroix to say goodbye as well.
Murtagh in season 1 quickly became a fan favorite because of his position in the Fraser family. He was Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) godfather and sworn to protect his position as Laird. As Claire (Caitriona Balfe) adjusted to Highland life, Murtagh is also there to lend a helping hand. “I was extremely grateful as an actor, and I was aware that I was very grateful for the fans’ reaction to that character as well,” Lacroix says.
Outlander fans who read the novels know Murtagh originally dies during the Battle of Culloden at the end of season 2. The decision to...

On Tuesday, July 28 the TV Academy doled out its nominations for the 72nd Emmy Awards and “Outlander” was nowhere to be found. Starz’s romance epic was cruelly snubbed in every category for Season 5, which aired between February-May of 2020, including Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Sam Heughan and Best Drama Actress for Caitriona Balfe. Throughout its first four seasons, “Outlander” received four Emmy bids — music (2015), production design (2016) and costumes (2016 and 2018) — but no wins.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the Season 5 finale of “Outlander,” titled “Never My Love.”]
The fifth season of “Outlander” has been full of big moments, from the death of Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and Roger (Richard Rankin) being hanged, to Bree (Sophie Skelton) getting justice and Jamie (Sam Heughan) facing death from infection. On the season finale, it was Claire (Caitriona Balfe) whose life was in danger, as the story picked up on her kidnapping from last week and doled out some of the most brutal scenes in the series’ history. And once again that meant turning to rape.
“Outlander” has never shied away from using sexual assault to either advance plot or characters, as it faces the challenge of staying true to the source material while delivering an 18th-century drama to a modern audience. In that vein, Claire’s gang rape, led by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) was inevitable as a big moment of her journey in the books,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Never My Love,” the finale of “Outlander” Season 5.
“Outlander” wrapped up its fifth season with “Never My Love,” an episode that includes some potentially polarizing moments, including centering the majority of the action around the kidnap and rape of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) at the hands of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his band of outlaws.
Although executive producer Toni Graphia calls this story, and Claire’s subsequent disassociation from the trauma, a “bold choice,” it was one that was in-line with the show’s long-time depiction of sexual assault. Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) have been victims of sexual violence in the past as well. Although Graphia admits she knows it can be “hard on the readers and hard on the viewers” to experience such stories, these actions are inciting incidents that drive the narrative further.

Although Graphia admits she knows it can be “hard on the readers and hard on the viewers” to experience such stories, these actions are inciting incidents that drive the narrative further.

It has been a stressful time over the past few weeks on Outlander. After the death of Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and dealing with Roger's (Richard Rankin) Ptsd from being hung, it's been a downright bummer over at Fraser's Ridge, to be honest. So it's about time that things got back to normal and we

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Famous Last Words,” the eighth episode of “Outlander” Season 5.
When “Famous Last Words” first started, it took “Outlander” viewers out of the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Alamance and instead showed Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) back at Oxford in 1969 when they were first dating. He gave lecture about different historic figures’ famous last words and then, after the class ended, he and Bree talked about going to see a silent movie.
It felt like a weird way to start the episode, especially since when viewers last saw the Fraser clan, they were cutting Roger down from having been hanged after his ancestor Buck (Graham McTavish) turned him over to the Red Coats as a Regulator rebel. However, as the episode went on, the framing device’s purpose became clearer.
What happened was that Roger was...

“Outlander” has a history of breaking fans’ hearts, but in terms of emotional drama “The Ballad of Roger Mac” is right up there. The Fraser family took a brutal beating as the crown pushed through the Battle of Alamance, but tragedy isn’t done coming for this clan just yet. From a broken syringe and a major character’s death, to the fate of another lead being left in the air by the quiet, closing moments, there’s plenty of uncertainty and unrest throughout this week’s hour.
As history predicted, the Red Coats easily overtook the rebels with their superior cavalry, but after Bree (Sophie Skelton) rode out to warn her parents and Roger (Richard Rankin) that Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and his men would inevitably fall, the family did their best to avoid war one more time. That meant Roger, who has struggled to find his place since deciding...

Warning: This recap, by its very nature, contains major spoilers about Sunday’s Outlander
Rationally, I know that this week’s Outlander was written, filmed, edited and locked down months ago. So there’s no way that my — and part of the fandom’s — voicing our grievances with last week’s episode had any bearing on anything that happens on screen in this Sunday’s installment. But “The Ballad of Roger Mac” is so well crafted, so well acted and so heartbreakingly fulfilling that it almost feels as though we collectively dreamed it into being.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Ballad of Roger Mac,” the seventh episode of “Outlander” Season 5.
The latest “Outlander” episode was simply heartbreaking with one confirmed death and one fate left quite literally hanging in the balance.
Both book readers and non-book readers alike have been aware for a while that Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) was on borrowed time on the show. In Diana Gabaldon’s book series, Murtagh was killed at the Battle of Culloden in the second novel, “Dragonfly in Amber.” Keeping him alive to meet up again with Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the American colonies was a big change the show made. But fighting for a rebellious cause against the British Crown was always going to be a dangerous proposition and as such, Murtagh’s time came to an end in “The Ballad of Roger Mac,” when he was killed saving Jamie...

Warning: This Outlander review contains spoilers.
“The Ballad of Roger Mac” may initially lead people to believe they’re in for an hour of Roger singing folk songs, but the battle against the Regulators steals the thunder. This fakeout, combined with some rich symbolism surrounding Jamie’s faith, is the ideal setup for one of the most tragic moments in Outlander so far. Governor Tryon’s militia and professional Redcoat soldiers really did meet the Regulator forces at Alamance Creek in 1771. The episode delivers not only a faithful to history reenactment of the battle but also plenty of surprises and tears for the audience.
The very first scene shows Roger fearful for the battle, but Jamie is established as the true focus of the episode. We see his extended reflection on turning 50, and how that means living longer than his father. Claire’s 18th-century remix of Marilyn Monroe’s birthday...

‘Outlander’ Review: Wedding Preparations and an Old Foe Lay the Groundwork for a Major Confrontation
Who knew that the fifth season of “Outlander” would feature so many weddings? While Jocasta (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and Duncan Innes (Alastair Findlay) didn’t actually tie the knot in “Better to Marry Than to Burn,” their wedding preparations anchored an action-packed episode full of reunions, plans, and well-earned second chances.
The installment kicked off with a flashback to Jocasta tragically losing her daughter, a scene that gave viewers new insight into her current disposition and further explains her choice to settle for Duncan despite her feelings for Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix). When the Regulator leader showed up at the end of the episode to declare his love and ask her to wait, it was a tense scene packed with emotional showcases for two characters that didn’t necessarily get to dig into those moments in the Diana Gabaldon novels. In the end Jocasta’s decision to go ahead and marry...
