On January 19, 2010, he became the first Republican elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in over 37 years, defeating Martha Coakley 52%-47% in a special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy.
His parents divorced when he was a child. His father later remarried three times and his mother remarried four times.
After his sister entered his photograph for him, he won Cosmopolitan Magazine's "Sexiest Man Contest" and was featured nude in their June 1982 issue. A strategically placed arm covered his genitalia in the photo spread.
