After 43 episodes (and 54 hours you'll never ever get back), the ninth season of "American Idol" is finally down to just two. And I'm live-blogging every last second of it. (Although, not literally every second because that would be quite cumbersome. And boring.)
Will it be Crystal Bowersox, a dread-sportin' diabetes-havin' mother who's doing it all for her adorable baby (who I insist on calling Jack Bowersox)? Or will it be Lee DeWyze, a paint salesman from Mt. Pleasant, Illinois who was kicked out of school for behavior problems and who now loves wearing gray jackets and crying in front of large groups of people?
For a season that has been short on the drama, this week's finale is a bit of a nailbiter. While Crystal was the early stand-out who maintained her lead for most of the season, lately she's been stumbling with poor song choices. Lee always had the...

Forcing past stomach butterflies is apparently a difficult trick on American Idol. The more fortunate performers conquered their nerves for "Rolling Stones Week" and emulated Mick Jagger by strutting, rooster-dancing, Tyler Grady-conjuring, and daring to sing. Their success was sometimes so grand that Johnny Depp threatened to base his next film character on a kooky old coot somewhere in the room. Hide, Lacey Brown! We rank the night's renditions one by one -- with helpful visual aids -- after the jump.

Debuting on the Idol stage, Grady stuck to his roots and belted out American Woman by Canadian rock band The Guess Who. Vibing the 70's rocker seems to work for the talented singer, but the judges advised him to hit the mall and update his look. Check out what the judges had to say about Tyler Grady's performance: Kara DioGuardi: "I want to see you change it up." Randy Jackson: "You've been going for style." Simon Cowell: "People are going to remember that performance." Ellen DeGeneres: "You have the poses of your rock legends." Idol fans are sad to see the rocker leave, but hope that his band Wailing Waters will make it to the big time, so we can see Tyler Grady in the spotlight again. America voted and Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Munoz and Tyler Grady were all eliminated from the ninth season of "American Idol"'s Top 24. Now "The Insider" talks to the ousted "Idol" hopefuls about the disappointment of not making it another week on the singing competition. "If there was any way to go out, I'm so proud of myself in the way that I did. Several of the girls have even texted me and just said, 'Janelle, you had so much poise, you were a class act and we look up to you and we really admire the way that you went out.' I felt like I kept it together, I sang my song better than I sang it the first time and I'm really happy with how it went," Janell says. For his part, Tyler says he isn't clear why he was eliminated, except for the fact that he didn't get enough votes.

Eliminated American Idol contestant Tyler Grady has claimed that he is glad he stayed true to his roots whilst performing on the show.
Grady was criticised for being too 70’s and Cowell said he looked like he’d gone to ‘pretend to be a rockstar school.’
According to E! Online, he said: “I definitely respect the judges, and I think that they’re very qualified to be critiquing the contestants on the show, but at the same time, when you are building a fanbase and your fans are supporting you, they’re supporting you because of what you’re doing – you can’t turn on your fans.”
He added: “You can’t change up what you’re doing to the point where you irritate your fans. If they’re supporting you, you need to give them what they want and support them back.”

American Idol contestants are, at best, young and idealistic, and at worst, well, young and deluded, and sadly, last night's eliminated singer Tyler Grady falls into the second category. Grady spoke to reporters today after being booted last night and began a conference call with the media by, well, accusing the media of having it in for him. (That's about as smart as blaming the judges on-air for ypur misfortune, therefore breaking American Idol rule No. 1: Never blame anyone when you get kicked off!) Grady then spoke at length about what he imagines are his legions of fans, insisting that he would always "stay true" to his performance style and his, uh, "fanbase." Are you one of those rabid...

Tyler Grady, the curly haired '70s-inspired rocker who got the boot from "American Idol" on Thursday night, has no regrets for calling out the judges as he said goodbye.
"I felt like I would have regretted it if I didn't just kind of put out my feelings on that," Tyler told AccessHollywood.com's Laura Saltman on Friday.
On Wednesday, after performing "American Woman," and swaggering across the stage with his snakey hips and Led Zeppelin-style moves, Simon Cowell slammed the 20-year-old from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, with comments echoed by fellow judges Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres.

Tyler Grady was no Jim Morrison. If he was he would have stayed longer than the first week of top 12. Besides, he doesn’t want to hear the comparison anyway, as he told EW. EW: Tyler, how are you doing today? Tyler Grady: I’m very disappointed but at the same time I’m in high spirits because I realize all the potential this platform has given me. I know I had approximately 30 million viewers see me perform. That’s more than some performers can say. I already have a pretty strong fan base from the show and it...

Tyler Grady, Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Munoz have become the first four contestants to be voted off this year’s American Idol.
I’m a little bit disappointed by the female result, because I thought both had potential, despite clear first-night nerves. Damn.
Rodriguez, 22, sang Happy by Leona Lewis but met with disappointing comments from the judges. Simon Cowell described the performance as clumsy, and suggested that she was even going backwards. Still, she had a great look and great vocals in the run-up to this.
Janell Wheeler – what a cutie – got dumped after her rendition of What About Love? by Heart. The judges weren’t too critical of her – some comments were that she had chosen a difficult song, with Simon saying that she went sharp when she got too excited.

There was a time when grace and dignity ruled the land. When disappointed singers whose "journey" ended on "American Idol" in the first few semi-final rounds shed a crocodile tear (or 20), got their obligatory fake hug from host Ryan Seacrest, sang their most recent karaoke number again (invariably just a bit less terribly than the night or two before) and then shuffled off this mortal coil never to be heard from again.
But on Thursday (February 25) night's first elimination show of season nine, a strange thing happened: The four men and women who got the boot didn't open the fake water works and just go away. They went away mad. Like a mistake had been made, or as if they deserved to be on the show no matter what those dumb 24 million voters thought!
The first boot-ee, Florida beach blonde Janell Wheeler, handled it best when she got the hook over teen Katie Stevens.

Who was eliminated from 'American Idol'? I can happily say that I've actually been following this season of Fox's hit reality series "American Idol", so yes, when I'm posting updates for the series, for the first time I know what I'm talking about. Of course, I'm only watching because Ellen Degeneres is now part of the show, otherwise, it'd be another year of covering the series without actually knowing what's going on.
In any case, Janelle Wheeler was the first to get the ax from the show. The second contestant to go was Ashley Rodriguez. As for the guys, Joe Munoz and Tyler Grady were the two unfortuante aspiring musicians to be eliminated. Thanks goodness Joe got the ax. I absolutely could not stand that guy and am utterly shocked that he made it as far as he did.
What do you guys think? Do you agree with...

The season's first "American Idol" eliminations are in the books, and now Tyler Grady, Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez and Joe Munoz will have to pursue their dreams of pop stardom on their own. All of the eliminations seemed to make sense (though Tim Urban was arguably worse than Grady) and each one was accompanied by an "Idol" tradition: The exit song.
This season, Will Young's "Leave Right Now" is the tune that will send fallen "Idol" contestants back to the real world. Considering the title and the fact that Young is a former "Pop Idol" winner in the U.K., it's a logical fit (even though it was big on the British charts all the way back in 2003). However, when played over the exit montages last night, it sounded simultaneously harsh and dour, especially considering the chorus: "I think I better leave right now/ Before I fall any deeper...

American Idol 9 dropped its first four semifinalists, and they were people that, to be perfectly honest, I didn't even recognize. Perhaps the biggest surprises were that last-minute replacement Tim Urban was safe (but Simon Cowell's criticism has the potential to galvanize voters) and Alex Lambert escaped elimination despite looking as though he had wandered in off the street thinking the studio was a McDonald's, and Tyler Grady went home despite getting a lot of...

What did we learn from the first American Idol results show of season nine? Well...
America pities a cute singer that gets (properly) lambasted by judges for his lack of singing talent. Visible hand-shaking during a performance is grounds for elimination. Lack of early round attention is harmful for a contestant's chances, no matter how well their sing a live performance. Being hot isn't enough.
In order, these facts relate to the following semifinalists:
Tim Urban: You seem nice, but the shock you expressed after Ryan told you to sit down because you were safe should have been echoed around the country. This guy simply can't sing well enough. He should have been eliminated.
Janell Wheeler: She definitely chose the wrong song, as a Heart rock ballad isn't in her wheelhouse. But the overt nerves shown throughout the performance had to have been to blame for this decision.

Teen rocker Allison Iraheta has made her return to the "American Idol" stage for the show's Top 24 result show. On Thursday night, February 25, the 17-year-old singer who finished fourth on season 8 got to deliver her first televised performance of "Scars", a new single from debut album "Just Like You".
While Allison brought her new song, season 8 winner Kris Allen took the stage with a mission. Being a part of "Idol Gives Back", the 24-year-old shared about his recent trip to Haiti and the rebuilding. "There's a lot of devastation, a lot of destruction," he went on to say, "but there is some hope."
The "Live Like We're Dying" singer then performed his rendition of The Beatles' "Let It Be" accompanied by his guitar and a pianist. His performance will be available on iTunes and 100% of the proceeds will go to Haiti relief.
On the same night, "American Idol" said goodbye to the first four semifinalists.

Some shocking turns came up on "American Idol" result show. While Tim Urban and Haley Vaughn who did bad on the performance night get to stay in the competition, judges' favorites Joe Munoz and Ashley Rodriguez went home.
Two from the girls and another two from the guys were eliminated from the Top 24 based on the audience vote which clocked in at 24 million on Wednesday, February 24 night. Joining Ashley and Joe as the outcast are Janelle Wheeler and Tyler Grady.
Ashley was the first to be announced to leave the show, being pitted against Didi Benami. She reprised her rendition of "Happy" which Simon Cowell thought was "clumsy" during her performance night. Joe was next, put in the bottom two of the guys with Tim. He also took the stage for the last time singing "You and I Both". Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Munoz and Tyler Grady have become the first four contestants to be eliminated from the ninth season of American Idol. The group were voted off the show during tonight's live results episode after receiving the lowest number of public votes for their performances. The Top 12 females had made their live debut on Tuesday night's show. The Top 12 males took to the stage last night. Tonight's episode also saw the return of two former Idol stars, as last season's winner Kris (more)...

Come on back Sanjaya, all is forgiven.
American Idol.s 12 male contestants did their best to send viewers over to the Winter Olympics last night. Even with the DVR cranked up to warp speed, the show seemed underwhelming and endless.
But let.s give the boys a break, at least for a moment. The judges had their own off night. They sent out so many mixed signals that the gents must have felt like they were parked up at Inspiration Point with the drunk president of the high school Abstinence Club.

Jim Morrison lookalike Tyler Grady made his first live appearance on American Idol last night. Whilst the judges liked his vocals enough, they weren’t convinced by his pretend 70’s rockstar style and asked that he dropped the act a little.
For his first performance Tyler chose to sing ‘American Woman’ and we thought he screamed a bit too much throughout. Tyler has a good singing voice but this track didn’t showcase it enough.
Randy Jackson thought it was “style over substance” while Simon said, “Plus side, people are going to remember that performance. You come over a lot as someone who’s gone to pretend-to-be-a-rockstar school. We know what your style gimmick is, but you have to change it a little bit.”
We did appreciate his little self-deprecating moment after the judges critiqued him when he pleaded, “Save me, Ryan!” though.

Call it a case of nervousness on the first day of class, a failure to study hard or a bunch of students in over their heads. Whatever the case on Wednesday's "American Idol," the top 12 men arrived for their first live show test and promptly flunked. At least, most of them did, especially when compared to the top 12 women the previous evening. So, who surprised us, who disappointed us and who's in danger of going home? Did most of the top 12 boys choke, or are our expectations just too high?
After suffering through disappointing performances from the top 12 girls on American Idol, we finally got a chance to watch the guys take the stage last night, and the results were… slightly less disappointing. Though there were a few standout performances (big ups to Casey James and Joe Muñoz) we couldn’t help but long for the boys of season eight: Where were the Adam Lamberts? The Kris Allens? We’d even settle for another Matt Giraud.
Todrick Hall, 24, set the tone for the evening by butchering Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” with an awkward R&B rendition that just didn’t work. Even 20-year-old Tyler Grady (who we love) put on a lackluster performance of The Guess Who’s “American Woman.” The judges agreed his ’70s rocker vibe is too cliché and it feels forced.

After one of the roughest first rounds in "American Idol" memory, voters appeared to get it right with the initial four eliminations of season nine. Though a few of the shakiest competitors from the debut week of live performances lived to see another day — think Tim Urban and Katie Stevens — Thursday night (February 25) marked the end of the road for Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Muñoz and Tyler Grady.
Thanks to 24 million votes, the first singers who passed into safety include a glammed-up Siobhan Magnus, cowgirl wannabe Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor, Katelyn Epperly and Stevens. That left all-American Florida girl Janell Wheeler on the outs. "That sucks," she said, snapping her fingers. "I had a feeling ... definitely wrong song choice," she admitted of Heart's "What About Love," which the...

Wednesday night's (February 24) "American Idol" was bad. Really bad. Like, makes-you-question-the-meaning-of-life-bad. The debut of season nine's Top 12 boys (no men here) did the impossible: It out-sucked the girls' tepid outing from Tuesday. By a lot. Let's just get to the carnage.
Todrick Hall
Song: "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson
Verdict: The Wizard of Odd
Todrick opened the show on an offbeat note by putting Kelly Clarkson's signature anthem in a blender with fuzzed out synths, jangly African guitars, Morris Day R&B, atonal background singers, gospel vocal inflections and a dollop of a spoken word. It was as close to a Dirty Projectors song as we'll ever get on "American Idol." It may have left the judges scratching their heads (Randy used the word "obliterated"), but Pitchfork would give it an 9.2. Personally, I dug it. He may have been trying too hard, but I thought his vocals...

A few notes from the first night of live performances for the men on American Idol:
The show needs to ditch the "joke" that Kara has a crush on Casey James. It led to Ryan's funniest line ever (regarding the Hr meeting), but it's far more creepy and inappropriate than funny. If the judges didn't like Tyler Grady's 1970s gimmick (and neither do we), why did they select him? We had the same reaction the night before when the panel critiqued the quiet, acoustic-based women for playing songs true to who they were. Tim Urban? Sorry, man. But... ouch. Our eardrums are still hurting. Another question for the judges: Do you want contestants to mix up a song or don't you? Yes, Todrick Hall went to the extreme last night, but give the guy credit for trying.
Still, complaints about the judging panel aside, the simple fact is...

The second night of "American Idol" showcased the talents of the 12 guys who are hoping to win the "Idol" title -- and then America voted. On Thursday night, four will be sent home: two women and two men, taking us to next week and the Top 20. Todrick Hall kicked off the night with a unique version of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Ellen DeGeneres began the critiques, saying, "That is what you are looking for after you sing a song. [The audience reaction.] You are dancer, so you already have a stage presence. The chorus was rough. The singing wasn't the greatest, but a great performance." Randy Jackson said, "I think you are mad talented, but I didn't even know what song it was. You never want to take a song and completely obliterate it. I still want to see you sing." Kara DioGuardi added, "I think you are a strong...

On Wednesday, February 25, it was the guys' turn to take the stage of "American Idol" and garner votes from it. Todrick Hall was the first to perform and he took a bold step to re-arrange Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" to an R & B. Simon Cowell said, "I thought it was a crazy arrangement of the song. What you did was completely murder the original song. You can boo all you want, but nobody would buy it. I think what you did was verging on stupid."
Aaron Kelly was next and he did what's he's best for, country music. Singing Rascal Flatts' "Here Comes Goodbye", Aaron got the compliment of being cute by both Simon and Kara Dioguardi. "You're a good singer. Very likable. Very cute, but you have to take control of the song. I think absolutely 100 you'll be here this week," Simon said.

Which "American Idol" men should feel comfortable Wednesday night (Feb. 24) and which ones should be worried?
As you can see if you compare the Top 12 women prediction to how they actually performed last night, we did okay on the 100% Safe part, but we kinda flubbed the In Danger part. Let's see how we do with the guys.
100% Safe
Andrew Garcia: Garcia is not only a critics' favorite but he is a fan favorite so far as well. Barring Andrew's sacrifice of a puppy live onstage, we think can say he's safely advancing.
Michael Lynche: Lynche is a likable teddy bear with a newborn daughter. Plus, he's got actual R&B singing chops. He should be fine.
Casey James: The country market is cornered here, plus Kara will pimp him no matter what he does in the hopes he'll disrobe again.

After a number of uneven, forgettable performances by the top 12 ladies Tuesday night, it was starting to feel like Simon Cowell's prediction that a female would win this year's "American Idol" was a bit premature. And then the men took the stage Wednesday night (February 24), and for most of the two hours, well, they seemed determined to prove Simon right.
From poor song choices to shaky vocals and clear nerves, one by one, the guys got hammered by the judges, with even front-runner Andrew Garcia drawing some fire for his somber Fall Out Boy cover as pinup cowboy Casey James appeared to slip into the pole position with his mix of good looks and strong vocals.

With one day remaining before the top 12 women on American Idol perform live, Sbg Global Sportsbook has installed Andrew Garcia has the season nine favorite.
This could change week-to-weeo, of course, but it's an understandable positioning: Garcia's acoustic take on Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" was the most memorable audition in Hollywood.

The great "American Idol" social media experiment got off to a mellow start last week.
