You know what would make American Idol better? Or The Voice? Or X Factor, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, or any reality competition requiring an assessment of talent? If it was acceptable to tell auditioners, "You're very talented, but I'm sorry, you're a loser. Thank you for your time."
Loser. That's a word I need to hear more. Because here's the thing about Idol's eleventh year of pop pageantry and growly Georgia-on-my-Mind-yness: I can't root for contestants who sing well but reek of contrivance, ineptitude, or losery loserness. Pop music is not about operatic supremacy, dammit! It's about flair, self-confidence, nerviness, and maybe not looking like a meek shopper at Forever 21. God! You'd think Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez flew a Craigslist ad seeking "Meek Forever 21 Shoppers Who Would Like 2 B Musical Sens8ions" and cast their loudest inquirers. Last night we met 14 of Idol's 24 semifinalists,...

Twelve shipwrecked guys are treading water amid a swarm of ravenous sharks, when suddenly, a luxury yacht pulls up alongside them. “Darling, your bathing suits are divine!” exclaims a glamorous actress, peering down from the deck. “Dude, your backstroke is bitchin’!” says the rock star alongside her. “Way to throw caution to the wind and do your thing, dawgs!” says their pal the music producer, sipping from a tall Coca-Cola glass. Welcome to the American Idol season 10 men’s semifinal — life boats not included!

Our experts weigh in on the top 12 men, also naming Paul McDonald and Scotty McCreery as standouts.

Of course it's too early to start handicapping who might win season 10 of "American Idol," but that's never stopped us before. After a lackluster first night on the big stage for the top 12 men on Tuesday, we decided to ask a few of our "Idol" experts who they thought nailed it and who appears to have what it takes to win the whole thing.
First, we turned to noted producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects, Flyleaf), who worked with "Idol" alum Chris Daughtry on his band's smash 2006 debut. He said he was impressed with sudden front-runner Jacob Lusk and Casey Abrams.
"I think Casey's one of the best ones left, and Jacob is amazing," said Benson, who started watching the show intently after working with Daughtry.

For a lot of people, the American Idol audition rounds are all about the point-and-hoot spectacle of watching deranged, deluded “singers” committing treacherous acts against the beloved songbooks of Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and a host of other musical superstars. Yet while I’m not immune to occasionally chuckling at said catastrophes, I get far more enjoyment from the good auditions, from experiencing the sudden and unexpected chills that come from seeing a nervous, heretofore anonymous kid floor a panel of judges (and 25 million viewers) with his or her vocal prowess.

Handing over the Lennon/McCartney songbook to "American Idol: Flatliners Edition" was a lot like letting an 11-year-old take a Rolls Royce out for a spin. In fact, the entire first act of the show Tuesday night (April 6) was dedicated to the judges and producers (and even Sir Paul himself) essentially telling the Top 9, "Don't f--- this up."
Thankfully, for the most part, they didn't. It was a trippy episode, filled with strange instruments and stranger audience members, but in a weird way it felt appropriate. After all, these were the men responsible for a TV movie that featured a waiter shoveling spaghetti onto an obese woman's table.
Before I get to the performances, I think it's important to address that George Harrison and Ringo Starr were never mentioned during Tuesday's broadcast. Weird, but also typical. Don't be offended by the snub, George and Ringo fans. "Idol" often refuses to...

It's been four days since we lost Alex Lambert, Katelyn Epperly, and Lilly Scott on American Idol, yet I'm still going through the stages of grief. Last Friday, when I filmed this week's Idolatry with Michael Slezak, I was somewhere between denial and guilt. Why didn't I vote Thursday night, PopWatchers? Why, why, why?! But now, my friends, I'm onto bargaining. (You think I'd be at acceptance by now? Puh-leeze. I'm still holding a grudge about Scott Savol outlasting Constantine Maroulis in season 4. This is going to take a while.) Since I'm not going to waste Jermaine Sellers' god's time with my bargaining,...

Wednesday night's (March 10) "American Idol" kicked off with Ryan Seacrest staring into the soul of the remaining eight men. I wonder if he knew that some major shake-ups were about to go down in the boys' talent department. Hard rockers covered pop tunes, a bad singer didn't completely suck and the grand finale left one judge in tears.
Let's break this down.
Lee Dewyze
Song: "Fireflies" by Owl City
Verdict: Ow! City
It's a Christmas miracle! Lee Dewyze looked like he was having fun while performing! And he showed his creative side by turning the twee electro-pop of "Fireflies" into a frat house jam. He probably should have saved original recording's Auto-Tune, because his pitch was as off as Ryan Seacrest's pronunciation of Owl City. (Did the radio DJ really say "Al City?") Kara went so far as to say Lee's guitar-based arrangement was superior to Adam Young's Postal Service-y bleeps,...

For the most part, the ladies brought it on Tuesday night's "American Idol" and early front-runners are definitely emerging in Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Lilly Scott. On Wednesday night (March 10), it's the guys' turn again, as we speed toward Thursday's elimination, when season nine's top 12 will be determined.
Last week's switcheroo due to Crystal Bowersox's illness didn't throw the guys off, though a few of the men turned in performances that were barely enough to keep them in the running. So what do the rest of the men need to do to win the hearts — and ears — of the nation? How can they get enough votes to avoid landing in the bottom two? Here's what we...

If anyone needed advice, it's this crop of American Idol semi-finalists. Luckily, they now have me, their Dear Abbey.
This season, I'll be answering fictional questions from the semi-finalists of American Idol about the pressing issues of the week. In my debut column, I answered questions from now eliminated contestants Haeley Vaughn and Jermaine Sellers, clearly they paid the ultimate price for not following my expert advice. This week, I'm answering questions from Didi Benami, Tim Urban, Katelyn Epperly, Casey James and Todrick Hall. Hopefully two weeks of Simon Cowell has prepared them for Dear Abbey.

Kara DioGuardi has the hots for Casey James (along with the rest of America), Simon Cowell has picked Crystal Bowersox as his early favorite, Randy Jackson is dawgs with the whole crew, and funny Ellen DeGeneres always keeps it light, like the joke she made to Alex Lambert last week, "There's such a great voice under that mullet." Even though the judges have very strong input every week, it is your job as Americans to vote for your favorite. Four more contestants were sent home last Thursday and throughout the week we will be bringing you sound clips about their American Idol (TV) journey. Things are heating up on American Idol (TV) and last week we said goodbye to another four contestants who sang their hearts out on the Idol stage. The new format for Season 9 has four contestants going home for three consecutive weeks, until the Top 12 are reached.

Former American Idol contestant Jermaine Sellers has revealed that he is planning to send Simon Cowell a new bible.
Sellers was eliminated from the show on Thursday night only two night’s after he offered to take the judge to his church.
“I’m gonna send him a Bible,” he told Access Hollywood. “Like I told him, he [needs] to go to church.
“If he had a little bit of Jesus in him, then he wouldn’t be so mean. I’ve never known [anybody] that don’t smile.”
However, Simon isn’t as mean as Jermaine insinuated. The music mogul even offered his commiserations to the outgoing singer.
“He came to me afterward, after I got voted off, and he said, ‘Jermaine, I’m sorry’,” Sellers explained.

This week, I did better in my "American Idol" predictions, correctly guessing three out of the four contestants who would be going home - Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Michelle Delamor. It was a toss up for me between Haeley Vaughn and Lacey Brown. I guess I underestimated the power of the Texans. The red-headed country girl got to stay, while 16-year-old Haeley's "Climb" (she sang the Miley Cyrus tune this week) on the show was a short one. This morning, I had a chance to chat with all four eliminated contestants.

Church singer Jermaine Sellers was one of four contenders eliminated on "American Idol" this week, but he plans to send British judge Simon Cowell a reverse parting gift.

In fact, after receiving criticism for his performance of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" on Tuesday, Jermaine suggested to Simon he should come to church with him, something the British judge said he would do. John Park and Jermaine Sellers were eliminated from "American Idol" but have nothing but positive feelings about their entire experience on the show.
John Park
On his most memorable moments of the journey:
It's just meeting the other contestants and really becoming god friends. Also working with Rickey Minor and the band. I mean, just working with the top of the top crew and band and coaches, it was just incredible.
On Simon's harsh remark that John would soon rejoin his acapella group:
He was basically saying that I might go home this week. He of course dramatizes it so people at home watch it and get a kick out of it. I don't really mind it because I understand where he's coming from. That's just who he is on TV. After the elimination happened and I sang my last song, he came up to me and shook my...

The "American Idol" semi-finalists have been whittled down to 16 contestants and so far a few trends appear to be emerging during these first two weeks of eliminations.
Wondering why singers like John Park and Joe Munoz have been booted and singers like Tim Urban and Lacey Brown have stuck around?
Some "Idol" writers around the Web have posited some theories about early Top 24 eliminations.
La Times music critic Ann Powers tweeted Thursday night (Mar. 5):
"Watching Idol a little late. All people of color eliminated so far. Boo!" and "What's with the racial purge on Idol tonight?"
Meanwhile, La Times Idol Tracker Shirley Halperin responded in a piece:
"As much as some would like to draw red and blue lines in the sand, there's no denying that all four contestants gave less than stellar performances this week."
Gawker's Richard Lawson wrote:

Although it sucks to see people’s dreams get crushed, don’t you agree with the rest of the country that we sent the right four people home?
There’s usually a ton of controversy about which contestants went home undeservedly, but this week I agree with the rest of America: the right four contestants were given the boot last night on American Idol. Let’s be honest: Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor, John Park and Jermaine Sellers were definitely the weakest links and we had to say goodbye.
21-year-old John Park was the first guy to get cut, which wasn’t all that surprising, given that I had already forgotten he existed (his rendition of John Mayer’s gravity had my head defying gravity. Snooze-fest!). Up next to the chopping block was Jermaine “I don’t need votes, I have Jesus” Sellers, 26. If Jermaine’s Idol fate was any indication,...

Even after being hospitalized due to complications from diabetes, MamaSox not only brought the house down on "Idol" this week, she stole the show!

John Park and Jermaine Sellers were the two guys sent packing while on the gals' side it was time to wave farewell to Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn. The show began with another godawful lip-synced group performance. The group performances with 20 folks crowding the stage invariably have a painful, Up With People aura about them. But lip-syncing goes again everything the show is supposed to stand for. I'm not one to brag, but did I nail it or what? You don't have to be a psychic to read the writing on the wall over at the "American Idol" terrordome, because season nine has been so full of dead wood that if the judges do revive the wild card, I really can't imagine who they would bring back.
That's why Thursday night's (March 4) elimination round was so easy to call. For me, anyway. I managed to go four-for-four, correctly predicting that smiling cowgirl Haeley Vaughn would vamoose, along with tone deaf Purple Haze frontman John Park, sanctified loony Jermaine Sellers and cute-but-bland young Whitney Houston lookalike Michelle Delamor.
I would have liked to see the judges use their executive power to make it an odd five and toss Tim Urban as well, but you can be sure the apple of Ellen’s eye will be gone next week,...

'American Idol' March 4th episode. There's definitely some talent on this season of Fox's hit reality show "American Idol". So far, things seem to be going my way. All of the my favorite contestants remain in the competition while the two I absolutely couldn't stand were forced to say their goodbyes on last night's episode.
The elimination show kicked off with the contestants singing the hit single "I Got A Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas. After the first break, host Ryan Seacrest revealed that John Park was received the lowest votes thus he was the first to be eliminated. Second to say his goodbyes was Jermaine Sellers. As for the ladies, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn were the two unfortunate ones to be eliminated.

Last night John Park and Jermaine Sellers were eliminated from American Idol. This afternoon, they both took the time to answer questions about their time on American Idol and what's next for them.
While the two couldn't be more different as singers or interview subjects, John was reserved and thoughtful and Jermaine remained the loquacious preacher that we saw interacting with the judges, both attributed their eliminations to the same flaw: an inability to focus. It turns out whether you're a lifelong church singer or the lead vocalist of your college glee group, when it comes to 30 million people watching you and the promise of Simon Cowell's wrath, there's no real preparation for Idol.
Here are the highlights of Jermaine and John's interviews. ...

American Idol 9 dropped four more semi-finalists last night, and coincidentally--or not--all of the contestants who went home were people of color: Michelle Delamor, John Park, Jermaine Sellers, and Haeley Vaughn. On the one hand, with Alex Lambert and Tim Urban and Didi Benami and others still around, it's kind of suspicious that voters got rid of these particular four semi-finalists all at the same time: three are black, one is Asian. (Update: And as...

"American Idol" in 60 Seconds has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it's not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you Jim Cantiello's bite-size recap of this week's "Idol" high jinks.
This week's "American Idol" had it all! Schedule changes, glass-shattering high notes and cameos from Jesus (and Vera Wang).
Week two of this year's "Idol" semifinals will be remembered as the week that quirky girls emerged as the breakout stars of season nine. Platinum-haired Lilly Scott, unpredictable banshee Siobhan Magnus and aspiring recording engineer Katelyn Epperly all put their own unique stamps on popular songs. But it was Crystal Bowersox who dominated headlines — not only when her hospitalization for...

In most cases, three out of four is a solid percentage. Imagine if a baseball player got a hit 75% of the time he came to bat.
But even when American Idol viewers eliminate the proper contestants 75% of the time, we can't help but focus on the one they got wrong. We'll try to work on this negative attitude.
Until then, we must ask: Michelle Delamor over Lacey Brown? Really?!? Has the latter proved her voice is impressive enough to compete with this season's semifinalists? At all?!?
Delamor, meanwhile, has come across as stiff occasionally... but it's at least conceivable to see her vocal skills propelling her toward the finals. Brown has no chance.
As for Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers and John Park? Goodbye and good luck. One of you smiled way too much (like a scary doll of some kind); one of you couldn't carry a tune and talked about...

While she didn't get a lot of screen time before the semifinals, Michelle Delamor established herself as season nine's resident diva with her first live "American Idol" performance of Alicia Keys' "Fallin'."
Unfortunately, she made an oddball song choice (an R&B version of Creed's "With Arms Wide Open"?) that sent her packing Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Haeley Vaughn.
Does she think lack of screen time did her in? We caught up with the 22-year-old from Miami on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and much more.
Q: On Wednesday, Kara said "With Arms Wide Open" was your best performance yet. Then during the results show, she took that comment back. Was that difficult?...

His "American Idol" journey might have come to an end Thursday, but John Park will always have Shania Twain.
The guest judge made Park's audition one of the most memorable of the season, with her borderline-inappropriate comments about his "bottom end." The Northbrook, Illinois, college student never quite lived up to his initial promise, however, and he was sent packing, along with Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn and Michelle Delamor.
We caught up with the 21-year-old Friday (March 5) to talk about the judges' harsh comments, his early front-runner status and what's next.

Former finalist Danny Gokey returned to the American Idol stage last night. Coming back to the stage that launched his music career, Danny gave an amazing performance of his new single “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” from his just released new debut album ‘My Best Days.’
Danny’s vocals were as strong as ever and we loved the whole leather jacket thing he had going on. Gokey told Ryan Seacrest that last year after one of his performances, country icon Randy Travis came up to him and asked, ‘Have you ever considered doing country?’ He said that his comment inspired him to release a country themed album.

American Idol contestants John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn were eliminated from the show last night.
On the results show Ryan Seacrest revealed that 27 million votes had been cast (that seems like a ridiculously high number to us!), the group sang “I Got a Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas (we preferred the X Factor group version last year) and Danny Gokey wowed us with “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.”
John Park was the first boy to be eliminated and we are kind of sad because we think that he actually had a great deal of untapped potential. On this week’s live show John sang ‘Gravity’ by John Mayer and the judges agreed that it was boring and lacked conviction. He sang his final song was slightly better than he did first time round, it was enough to kind of make us regret the result.

For giving bad performances two weeks in a row, Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, John Park and Michelle Delamor have all been sent home. "American Idol" viewers voted that these four should not advance to the next round. The ninth season is now wilted down to eight guys and eight girls.
The departure of Haeley, Jermaine and John were somehow expected since they received nasty comments from the judges this week. But Michelle actually got praises from Kara DioGuardi and Simon Cowell. Kara called Michelle's rendition of Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" her favorite performance while Simon applauded her effort of not choosing a safe song.
Dodging the bullet and given another shot at the competition are thus Tim Urban and Didi Benami. The former has been criticized for not being good enough yet garnered votes for his looks. The latter was on the verge of tears when hearing the judges' comments on this week's performance.

John Park, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn have become the latest contestants to be eliminated from American Idol. The semi-finalists were voted off the show during tonight's live results episode after receiving the lowest number of public votes for their performances. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which semi-finalists deserve to go home on "American Idol." This week? Not so much. The grim parade of bad, sad and Wtf? was Macy's Day long this week, led by repeat visits from a few contestants who must have lucky rabbit feet sewn into their tracheas or compromising pictures of Simon Cowell and his enormous (alleged) Hummel figurine collection.
Either way, there's no doubt who should go home this week. Note we said should, because America has gotten it wrong before.
Number one on the list is toothy cowgirl Haeley Vaughn. Yes, she is cute as a button and so deliriously upbeat that she literally can't stop smiling, but let's face it: She's a terrible, terrible singer. Even with a swing at a song that should be a slam dunk for her (fellow teen Miley Cyrus' "The Climb") Vaughn was a train wreck.

The judges swapped seats this week. Randy was back in the first spot, followed by Ellen, Kara and Simon. Why? Was someone not in favor of Ellen giving her opinion first? She has actually been a huge disappointment - much like the guys this season. Speaking of the guys, they were up tonight due to Crystal Bowersox having a medical emergency. Hopefully she will be better for the Wednesday competition.
Let.s break it down from worst to first.

We were kind of dreading Michelle Delamor’s performance on last night’s American Idol, as we really hate ‘With Arms Wide Open’ by Cree. However, somehow Michelle managed to pull it off well.
Randy Jackson and Ellen weren’t fans though with Randy saying she didn’t do enough with the song and Ellen saying that it ‘almost worked’. Kara and Simon agreed with us though and loved the performance.
Kara DioGuardi called it her favourite performance of Michelle’s ever, because she took a risk and had a great attitude. “You believed in it and I bought you,” she adds.
Simon Cowell agreed with Kara. He said that the first half was stronger than the second, but appreciated the judges gave a lot of contradictory advice last week, and appreciates that she tried to make the song her own.

Inexplicably, Tim Urban, the cute boy who has proven two weeks running that he is the luckiest guy on the stage, was given a pass, which allowed him to bust out his "what? me?" face yet again along with Todrick Hall, whose Tina Turner cover drew serious fire but also enough votes to keep him in the running.

We haven’t seen a huge improvement in the American Idol boys this week and one of the weaker candidates had to be Jermaine Sellers.
Jermaine tried to give a soulful rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On”, but in the end it was unconvincing and very, very weak. We like the song and it could have been a great choice but feel like it didn’t really get going until the very end.
Randy Jackson thought there were a “couple of bright moments” but added that it just wasn’t a great performance.
Ellen DeGeneres loved his style, but said that it just didn’t work for her and it was “off a little bit”.
Kara DioGuardi said what he can do is impressive but he is “doing too much” adding that “we don’t need every trick in every performance.”

Tuesday night's (March 2) episode of "American Idol" provided a handful of highlights, including the great video package promoting Alex Lambert and the suddenly improving Tim Urban. The show also featured a segment that felt a lot like deja vu: A contestant (in this case guitar picking Casey James) wailing his way through Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be."
Here's the thing: There's nothing particularly wrong about DeGraw's breakout 2004 single. It's a not unreasonable song with a too-catchy chorus and just the right amount of anthemic crunch. But as an "American Idol" song, it has to go. As James even admitted last night, "I Don't Want to Be" has shown up on "Idol" an inordinate number of times over nine seasons, spilling from the throats of the likes of Bo Bice, Elliott Yamin and Michael Sarver (all of whom, by the way, topped James by leaps and bounds). The top 10 "American Idol" men could only improve after last week's string of uninspiring, borderline panic-inducing, "Hoo boy, this season is looking weak" musical performances. On Tuesday night's show, improve is exactly what they did ... most of them, anyway.
The evening was still pocked with pitchy renditions, poor song choices and "How is this dude still around?" confusion, but overall the men stepped up in their second week of live shows. Who surprised us, who disappointed us and who's in danger of going home? Let's take a look at the top 10 men's report card. (And don't miss Jim Cantiello's review in the Newsroom.)

I’d like to open Tuesday night's (March 2) "American Idol" recap with a short excerpt of a screenplay I'm working on, which is loosely based on what I think might have happened backstage Tuesday. It's called "Bower Power."
Int. CBS Studios, backstage.
The Top 10 men are hanging out. A producer enters with purpose.
Producer: Crystal Bowersox is really sick. Doctors say she can't perform on "Idol" tonight. So you boys are going to sing in her place since we're willing to sacrifice all of you in order to save one of the season's breakout stars. Get into wardrobe, you pitiful excuses for "Idol" contestants. You're live in three hours.
Alex Lambert: [vomits, weeps, craps pants simultaneously.]
Tim Urban: It's okay, Alex. Just pray. That's what I do.
Jermaine Sellers: [puts down his vocal humidifier] Yeah! Jesus is my homeboy!
Cut to Heaven.
Jesus: [shakes head, sighs] I miss season eight.

Granted, the male semifinalists on American Idol were taken by surprise this week and told they were switching nights with the women due to a medical emergency (feel better, Crystal Bowersox!).
But it's hard to make that an excuse for so many poor performances, considering this was the second consecutive week that many of the men simply didn't impress.
Unless you count Jermaine Sellers impressing on viewers that he "knows God." We loved Simon's response to that reason for why Sellers thinks he won't be voted off: there's no reason for anyone to call in then, right?
A few men stood out (in a good way). Lee DeWyze, pictured above, really does sound like he could be on the radio right now.
And the judges might like to say this is a singing competition, but that doesn't mean Casey James and his electric guitar don't have an advantage over others.
