Six documentary shorts by female filmmakers — depicting everything from a San Francisco firefighter to female graffiti artists to a frank discussion of women’s breasts — were named as finalists in the inaugural Telling Our Stories Film Contest on Thursday.
The contest, presented by WrapWomen and Starz, focuses on female-made nonfiction films that highlight themes relevant to womanhood.
The six finalists, chosen through juror selection, will receive distribution on Starz and the chance to compete for the winning prize of $10,000. The winner will be announced at WrapWomen’s Power Women Summit on October 25 at the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica.

Wolfe Video has acquired all North American rights to director Quentin Lee’s family drama “White Frog,” which had its world premiere at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. The specialty distributor plans theatrical, VOD and DVD releases of the film in 2013. Booboo Stewart, Joan Chen, Bd Wong, Harry Shum Jr., Gregg Sulkin, Kelly Hu and Tyler Posey star in the story of a high-school freshman with mild Asperger’s syndrome whose life becomes more challenging when his older brother dies. Fabienne Wen and Ellie Wen wrote the film. MTV quickly renewed his fantasy drama Teen Wolf due to the show becoming the cable outlet’s highest-rated new series in two years in the 12-34 demographic in its first seven episodes. Posey’s career ascent continued with Variety reporting on his landing a lead role in the upcoming indie film White Frog. Posey signed on to play a high school senior who befriends a freshman with Asperger’s Syndrome. Fabienne Wen and Ellie Wen co-wrote the script and Quentin Lee came aboard the project as its director.
