“I’m just living that life, Von Dutch/ Cult classic but it’s still pop,” Charli sings over her frequent collaborator Easyfun’s pulsating electronic production. “I get money, you get mad/ Because the bank stop.”
In the accompanying music video, Charli goes dances her way through Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport.
The British artist announced Brat on Tuesday, saying it would be out “this summer.” In prior social media posts, she described it as “a club record.” Charli added, “i was born to make dance music. i came from the clubs. xcx6 is the album i’ve always wanted to make.”

Plot: Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy from the creators of Cobra Kai that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.
Review: When an elite team of special forces, commandos, and spies team up to save the day, that is usually the end of the story. The credits typically roll on a happy ending once the bad guy is killed and the world is saved. The new series Obliterated looks at what happens when that celebration is premature in a blend of the team action of The A-Team with the drug and alcohol-fueled excess of The Hangover.

The Elizabeth Banks-produced sex comedy Bottoms has hit theaters, and now, its soundtrack featuring music by Charli Xcx and composer Leo Birenberg is out, too. Stream the album below.
Spanning 27 songs, the Bottoms soundtrack features music co-composed by Charli and Birenberg, ranging in style and intensity. Tracks like “Bottoms” and “Sex with Mrs. Callahan” bring the upbeat, bit-crushed pop maximalism that you’d hope for from a Charli tune. Meanwhile, slower, more ambient tracks like “Josie and Juvie” and “Study Buddies” send the listener floating off into a vibey, ethereal atmosphere.
The soundtrack is augmented by additional production from The 1975’s George Daniel and longtime Charli collaborator A. G. Cook. Some Charli-heavy songs, like “Yes No Okay,” even feature guitar distortion and the rhythmic scratches, swooshes, and scrapes reminiscent of Cook’s 7G era, with Charli’s vocals carrying the perfect attitude over top. This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
Video games have the ability to transport players to interactive worlds beyond their wildest imagination, defeat bosses to become the hero they wish they could be in real life, and step inside an identity that they wouldn't otherwise understand. Or, in the case of a game like "Twisted Metal," drive an armored ice cream truck and blow up enemies with a remote-controlled rocket launcher. The vehicular combat video game was the lifeblood of the Dorito-dusted finger lickers of America in the late '90s and early 00s, and while there is a story players can follow ... most people opt to obliterate their pals with nuclear weapons. Yet, somehow, Peacock adapted the game into one of the most entertaining new series of the year.

Burgeoning network The Roku Channel had a breakthrough year at the Emmys thanks to its original telefilm “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” In all, the Weird Al Yankovic biopic parody received eight nominations including three for the infamous music superstar himself for producing, writing and music & lyrics. In addition, former “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe earned his first major career bid for taking on the role of Weird Al. Read on for a closer look at “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’s” eight nominations.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

As Emmy voting comes to a close, score mixer Phil McGowan could find himself with multiple nominations, having worked on the sound of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard,” Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and “Ozark,” and Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
He spoke with Variety about his approach to each project and what needed to be taken into consideration to preserve the sonic integrity in his mixes.
“Cobra Kai”
“This season was bigger and more maximal than previous seasons, but there wasn’t a big sonic shift. However, each episode is like a movie. Composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson approach it like it’s another ‘Karate Kid’ film. There are guitars, a drum kit, drum machines and lots of percussion. They use a lot of samples that are reminiscent of the 1980s and ’90s. So, I have fun applying mixing techniques with reverb that blends ’80s hair metal...

When “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” debuted on The Roku Channel in November, viewers quickly learned that this wasn’t your grandmother’s biopic. The life of Weird Al Yankovic (as played by Daniel Radcliffe) is exaggerated in satiric fashion, just as you’d expect from the man who rose to fame writing and performing parody songs. To celebrate the hilarious telefilm, check out our special 40-minute “Making of” roundtable discussion with co-composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson, production designer Dan Butts, film editor Jamie Kennedy, supervising sound editor Anthony Vanchure and sound designer Mike James Gallagher. Watch our exclusive video panel interview above.

I am Jack’s trailer for “Bottoms.”
On Tuesday, Orion released the first trailer for the new film from “Shiva Baby” director Emma Seligman with “Shiva Baby” star Rachel Sennott and “The Bear” Emmy contender Ayo Edebiri. Sennott and Seligman also co-wrote the script.
The twisted high school comedy focuses on two students (Sennott and Edebiri) who start a school fight club in an effort to win the attention of their more popular classmates. Here’s the official plot summary:
“‘Bottoms,’ a refreshingly unique raunchy comedy, focuses on two girls, Pj and Josie, who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” could end up being a strong contender at this year’s Emmy Awards. It may sound, dare we say, weird, but The Roku Channel’s satirical biopic has been a consistent presence at the recent guild awards we saw handed out in the lead-up to the Oscars. Most of those guild awards were also recognizing work on television alongside features, and “Weird” not only managed to get in those categories but it also won several.
Most notably, “Weird” was able to pull out a victory at the Producer’s Guild of America Award for Best Streamed or Televised Movie. Notably, several films that were nominated in this category over the past couple of years would later get into the Best TV Movie category at the Emmys, including “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia,” “Oslo,” “Bad Education” and “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.” The latter two took...

The Society of Composers & Lyricists has announced the nominations for its fourth annual honors for music in films, TV and video games, with French composer Alexandre Desplat and American composer Bear McCreary each scoring double nominations.
Scl, the primary organization for professional media composers, will present its awards Feb. 15 at the Skirball Cultural Center, with singer-actor-songwriter Darren Criss as host.
Voting ended Wednesday night in seven categories, just hours after the Motion Picture Academy announced its shortlists for song and score for 2022 films. The conceit of Eric Appel's "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" is that it is, in itself, a parody of Hollywood biopics. It starts with a few real-life facts from the life of "Weird Al" Yankovic -- the world's premiere accordion-playing pop song satirist and legitimate comedy god -- but then begins to extrapolate an exaggerated, highly fictionalized version of them. As the film progresses, the actual facts begin to recede and the whoppers increase. By the end, Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) has had a torrid affair with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) and ... well, it's better not to reveal some of the film's funnier gags.
In order to sell the film as a parody, it had to be delivered with a straight face. There could be no winking or joshing around from the cast. The sillier moments had to be presented in complete earnestness, or else the joke would not work.

Diversity
U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 is teaming with TV talent company Gritty Talent to help independent production companies build more diverse senior teams. The move in the wake of the broadcaster’s new commissioning guidelines published in June, which require all the indies it works with to have ethnically diverse as well as disabled off screen talent on production teams, with the new framework coming into play Aug. 1. The requirements are part of the legacy of Channel 4’s Black to Front Project.
Gritty Talent will define where the skills gaps and talent shortages exist across the U.K. in specific genres, and they will then help to identify the suitable talent. Genres under the spotlight first will be news and current affairs, factual entertainment and documentaries. The work will be supported by Channel 4’s strategic training and development initiative 4Skills, which focuses on supporting talent from diverse and disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

“If you are watching the show and think ‘the music really just hit hard there,’ that’s generally a part where Leo and I got really excited,” admits Zach Robinson about scoring “Cobra Kai.” Leo Birenberg adds, “I’d rather have a big swing and either hit a home run or a monster foul ball. But I’m down for both.” Watch our exclusive video interview above with the composer duo.
“Cobra Kai” is the Netflix series that continues the story from the 1980’s “Karate Kid” movies. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) now has a family and owns a car dealership. His high school nemesis, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), is a down on his luck battler with an estranged son. To settle rivalries and relive glory days, both men set up competing dojos. In the fourth season of the show they have to join forces when the ‘Cobra Kai’ dojo is taken over.

Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson, composers on the hit Netflix show “Cobra Kai,” are hosting a one-night only ticketed concert on June 23 at the Troubadour titled “Enter the Dojo: The Music of Cobra Kai Live.”
“We can’t wait to rock out yet again with the ‘Cobra Kai’ fan base,” Birenberg said.
“This is a show you’ll never forget,” Robinson added. “Prepare your faces for melting.”
Birenberg and Robinson have composed the score for each season of the show, including the upcoming fifth season. Their work mixes heavy metal with 80’s synthwave sounds to create a unique blend of orchestral rock. Together, the duo aims to encapsulate the original sound of “The Karate Kid” with a modern twist.
Birenberg’s music is also featured in Hulu’s “PEN15” and Netflix’s “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.” He has also scored the Disney+ superhero film “The Secret Society of Second Born Royals,...

Thanks to big syncs by the Weeknd, Motley Crue and yacht rock icon Christopher Cross, season four of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” raised the bar in more ways than just its viewership, which propelled the show to No. 1 on Netflix’s English series chart for the two weeks following its New Years Eve release. Extending the storylines introduced in the beloved 1980s film series “The Karate Kid” and featuring many of its original stars, the series continued to find effective musical tie-ins to drive the narratives around 50-somethings Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) as they pursue yet another All Valley karate tournament victory for their dojos.
This time around, the familiar ‘80s metal and soft rock classics were complimented by deeper cuts from those genres, knowing references to cult-classic songs and artists and more contemporary fare simpatico with the daily lives of its many teenage characters. Season four...

“Cobra Kai” season three ended with an epic showdown between Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and John Kreese (Martin Kove).
As the episode and season come to an end, the first epic fight happened at the Larusso house, where the younger characters got into a fight. But there was more – one last fight that happens at the Cobra Kai dojo.
The series created a vast musical landscape for its composers Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg, allowing them to pay tribute to some of the corniest sonic touchstones in genre-bending ways as the 37-track soundtrack sees the duo leading a massive, 90-piece orchestra across many styles from hard rock to synthwave to Japanese classical. Keen listeners will note there are nods to Bill Conti’s score for the original 1984 film, but both Robinson and Birenberg wanted to ensure they were scoring “Cobra Kai,” not “The Karate Kid.”

Netflix blockbuster “Cobra Kai” revisits old rivals Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) from the original 1984 Oscar-nominated classic “The Karate Kid.” The show picks up over 30 years after that iconic cinematic moment from the original film in which underdog Larusso defeated bully Lawrence at the 1984 All Valley Under-18 Karate Championships Tournament. This time, the show is told from the perspective of down-and-out Johnny, who re-opens the Cobra Kai karate dojo, rekindling his old rivalry with Daniel, who himself has become a successful prestige car salesman, husband and father.
The series’ first two seasons follow Johnny and Daniel as they set up their own dojos, as Lawrence establishes the show’s namesake Cobra Kai while Larusso leads Miyagi-do, named after his former sensei Mr Miyagi (played by the late Pat Morita from the original film). The Valley’s teenagers soon join either dojo, and are then inevitably drawn...

“The thing that works about the show is that you could look through anybody’s lens and see it through their eyes and they’re the hero in a way,” declares “Cobra Kai” star William Zabka. “’The Karate Kid’ was 35 years ago, so there’s a lot of life that has happened in between that,” he says.
“We’re not picking up a sequel right after that, we’re not copying anything. We’ve managed to create a show that is brand new and relevant to today with the backstory being something that everyone already has an emotional connection to.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Zabka above.

“To buy-in with the right kind of sincerity, you have to embrace the drama,” declares Leo Birenberg, who serves as composer on Netflix’s hit dramedy “Cobra Kai” alongside co-composer Zach Robinson. “We are really into the sincerity of how the score plays from the audience’s point of view,” Birenberg goes on to say. “It’s what you want to hear and cheer along with as the audience, and to execute it right, there’s a sincerity there. That is what we strive for in every single scene,” he explains, noting that the musical cues on this show are meant to be from the heart and earnest rather than ironic or tongue-in-cheek.
“We use that word all the time and that is what we live by,” Robinson agrees, as Birenberg enthusiastically adds that they are “here to have fun with the audience and with the characters.” Watch our exclusive...

Nothing is clear-cut when it comes to “Cobra Kai,” the “Karate Kid” universe of series creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The line between good and bad is blurry and fluctuating, and you find yourself rooting for characters representing one or the other interchangeably. Similarly, the show is both a teenage soap and an adult drama, often inviting a sort of whiplash between a modern-day narrative and one of pure nostalgia. The sourced music, too, is not immune from this identity crisis as it overdoses on ‘80s kitsch tipping toward hard rock, hair metal and Aor, or album-oriented rock.
Indeed, the needle drops on “Cobra Kai” are so on-the-nose, especially lyrically, that you can practically predict which ‘80s classic is about to be cued up for a scene. Whether this is meant ironically, humorously, seriously or in a tongue-in-cheek way is as indeterminate as whether the viewer is...

The sport of hockey, at least in the United States, didn’t always have the Russian influence that it now has. There was a time where players from the former Soviet Union first came over to American shores and started in the NHL. Filmmaker Gabe Polsky has looked at that before, but for his latest documentary, he’s chronicling a period where an NHL franchise actually went to Russia and tried to save their sport over there. The result is Red Penguins, a unique and entertaining doc that only falls a bit short when it attempts to be overly important at the end. Out now, it’s a quality flick that shines a light on a story you almost certainly were unaware of. This film, as you might imagine, is a sports documentary about the incredible true partnership between Russia and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not long after the collapse of the Soviet Union,...

A classic song for time-looping, surprising tunes for political campaigns, music for angst-ridden teenagers and wacky scores for dysfunctional families. All of these musical elements helped set the tone and make subtle storytelling points in much-talked-about comedies this television season.
Netflix’s “Russian Doll” used a Harry Nilsson song (“Gotta Get Up”) as its signature tune, which plays every time protagonist Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) dies and then loops back in time to her 36th birthday party.
Creators Lyonne, Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler wrote the Nilsson song into their pilot script, music supervisor Brienne Rose says. Because music supervision is “always about world-building,” she says, the use of this song also aids the audience in understanding what Nadia’s world sounds like — literally and emotionally.
“It resonated so well with the story, this strong juxtaposition of feeling very happy on the surface, but with lyrics that are really tragic and sad.

“Plus One” is proof of the continued vitality of traditional romantic comedy formulas. Yet far more thrillingly, it’s a testament to star power — which it has in spades, courtesy of Maya Erskine (Hulu’s “Pen15”), whose lead turn in writers-directors Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer’s winning film would, in a just world, make her an immediate A-lister. As a single woman who forges a pact with her college friend to attend their litany of summer weddings together, Erskine has a force of personality — and whip-crack comedic timing — that energizes this superior brand of amorous adventure. Genre fans won’t want to miss it when Rlje Films releases it in theaters and on VOD in June, following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere.

I recently sat down with Leo Birenberg, composer for Fox's hybrid-animation sitcom Son of Zorn and acclaimed documentary Red Army. A former mentee of the incredibly decorated Christophe Beck, Leo has already taken on scoring one of the biggest shows on television as well as numerous big name films. After chatting with him about Red Army, his former mentor, and his thoughts on scoring, it became clear it won't be long until his name is as ubiquitous in Hollywood as his scores. What is it like scoring documentaries? Did you enjoy it? Loved it. Documentaries are great because you can really work in broad strokes. Gives a lot of room to make interesting music and explore questions of tone and color. In contrast to other formats (live-action narrative,...
