Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
Fake Blood is a delicious curiousity: it’s a documentary about director Rob Grant and his frequent collaborator Mike Kovac, who also co-writes, exploring their responsibility in depicting cinematic violence.
Or at least that’s how it starts.
Over time the film slowly morphs into something different. As the two men embark on a mission to “experience” the kinds of violence depicted in their low budget films, they slowly become immersed in a narrative of their own making involving a “real-life” murderer named “John.”
Grant is well known in indie horror circles. In addition to directing under-the-radar gem Harpoon, he’s the editor of films like Knuckleball and this year’s Influencer.

Lifetime’s latest twisted family saga has come to a close. Part 4 of V.C. Andrews’ Dawn aired on July 29, it didn’t hold back when it came to campy, over-the-drop drama we’ve come to expect from the network’s adaptations of the V.C. Andrews’ gothic novels. The final installment of this limited series featured a tragic fire, a grab-bag of creepy and vindictive relatives, and a high-stakes game of keep-away with a baby doll. Let’s break down how things ended for the cursed Cutler family in Midnight Whipsters.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for V.C. Andrews’ Dawn Part 4: Midnight Whispers.]

As The 100 nears the end of its seven-season run, the creator and executive producer Jason Rothenberg was joined by cast members Marie Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon, Tasya Teles, Shannon Kook, Jr Bourne and Shelby Flannery in a pre-taped panel for Comic-Con@Home to reflect about their time on the CW sci-fi series. In addition to that, Rothenberg gave audiences some vague hints about the backdoor prequel pilot to the series which aired earlier this month.
“We definitely started the season wanting to make sure we didn’t leave anything on the field,” said Rothenberg about wrapping up seven seasons. He added that he recognizes the series leaves a lot of unanswered questions throughout the seasons that he wanted to answer and said that the prequel episode helped “fill in a lot of the blanks”. For example, he pointed out that the episode addressed why the bunker was empty...

Some of The 100 cast and showrunner Jason Rothenberg took place in a pre-recorded panel today for Comic Con at Home in which they chatted about the legacy of this show and what to expect from the latter half of the show’s final season.
“We definitely started this season wanting to make sure we didn’t leave anything on the field, meaning there were certain unanswered questions over the seasons that we wanted to answer,” said showrunner Rothenberg about the plan heading into the seventh season. “And since I know people are seeing this after I think maybe the first 10 episodes have aired, you already have seen the prequel so you know that that episode kind of fills in a lot of blanks. Why was the bunker empty when they opened it in Season 4 just being one sort of question that I always had and we needed to answer this year.

The following contains spoilers for The 100 backdoor pilot episode “Anaconda.”
The 100’s backdoor pilot episode “Anaconda” sets up the premise for The CW’s potential prequel series by centering the conflict on a polarizing, post-apocalyptic family: the Cadogans. Cult leader Bill (John Pyper-Ferguon) was already known to viewers, but the episode filled in more of his character, placing him firmly at the Russell Lightbourne end of the spectrum for bad dads on The 100. The heart of the series, however, belongs to his daughter Calliope (Iola Evans), who with her mother Gemma (Crystal Balint) escaped the Second Dawn cult twice over—first before the apocalypse, and again once Becca Franco (Erica Cerra) provided them with the means to survive in the irradiated world.
By the end of the pilot, Becca is burned at the stake, while Callie takes the Flame and a ragtag band of newly-Nightblooded bunker teens out to...

Earlier last month, The 100 fandom got together in Vancouver for Unity Days 2020 to celebrate the final season of the show and to enjoy the fan-created convention once again.
With the final season still filming, there wasn't much that could be shared by the cast. In fact, everything has been very secret this time around, and we haven't even gotten a premiere date or the promise of a potential trailer.
But that is the appeal of a convention, to give fans and cast members the chance to see one another and reflect on the legacy of the show together.
That is exactly what happened from January 24th through January 26th, with fans and the cast alike spending the weekend together talking about their love for the show and their excitement for The 100 Season 7.
Cast members in attendance included Eliza Taylor (Clarke Griffin), Bob Morley (Bellamy Blake), Chuku Modu (Gabriel Santiago...

A show like The 100 is built on a passionate fanbase, so it only makes sense that the convention built around that echoes the same statement.
It was passion that pushed fans to ask for more Unity Days, and it was that reaction that pushed a fourth year of the convention coming up January 24-26, 2020.
And as any previous Unity Days attendee knows, no year is ever exactly the same. Each time the convention recreates what worked best the year before, and yet also manages to surprise the fans with unexpected ideas.
This time around that turned into Unity Days hosting their largest guest count yet, rounding out at 17 actors from the show, and that is just the backdrop for what is yet to come.
The convention has also managed to gain a lot of new faces, not just to Unity Days but to most The 100 fans as well. Actors like Chuku Modu,...

Earlier this month, The 100 fandom came together in Boston for Conageddon 2019 to celebrate the upcoming season of the show and to enjoy the convention that promotes an intimate fan experience each year.
Conageddon is a convention that was created by Bob Morley, Eliza Taylor, Zach McGowan, Mike Gillespie, and Thomas Leath that focuses on bringing The 100 actors to the Us more prominently.
It was with their hard work and with the valuable assistance from lovely volunteers throughout the weekend that made Conageddon as memorable as it is.
Having the actors involved in the creation was a great asset too, allowing for two parties for the fans that had the cast in attendance which helped create some great memories along the way.
There was also the addition of a live stream for several panels, giving fans that couldn't go the chance to see what was happening. This approach helped remove some...

Ben McGrath (Chris Klein) had major league potential playing professional baseball, but his hopes to play ball literally get crushed. Down on his luck, Ben gets another swing at redemption as a new attorney for Schmood & Associates. His unorthodox boss, Mel (Jon Lovitz), convinces him to manage their eclectic softball team full of misfits and strikeouts. Together, will they have enough spirit to rally and win it all?

Van Helsing Season 3 Episode 11
“In the end, no one’s ever really who you think they are.”
Now that Vanessa has come to terms with her past actions, it’s only fitting that Axel Miller be afforded the opportunity to confront some of his own demons in a continuation of the cast-lite approach Van Helsing has adopted of late. The deeply personal “Been Away” puts Jonathan Scarfe in the spotlight as Axel wrestles not only with the conflicting forces of love and hate, but the knowledge that at his core he’s as imperfect as the next man.
There’s only so much a show can do when it focuses solely on one of its regular characters operating in a limited and compact framework, and...

Warn-kru: The following article spoils the events of The 100’s fifth season finale. Proceed with caution.
It was the ending no one saw coming — least of all Monty and Harper.
After narrowly defeating McCreary and escaping into space just in time to avoid being blown up along with the rest of the valley, Tuesday’s season finale of The 100 put Clarke & Co. into cryosleep, from which she and Bellamy awoke 125 years later (!) to meet Monty and Harper’s son Jordan (!!) and to discover a new planet (!!!). If you can’t tell from my liberal use of exclamation points, I’m still in shock.

The end of the world is nearly here, and it looks like we'll be going out with a bang.
The 100 Season 4 Episode 9 was a sprawling set-up, launching us into the final four episodes of the season. And boy, are they going to be intense.
Despite the fact that The 100 Season 4 Episode 8 actually ended on a really optimistic note – Jaha found the miracle bunker! Yay! – things didn't stay too upbeat for long. Shocking, I know.
"Dnr" started off with everyone preparing to head to the Second Dawn bunker uncovered at the temple in Polis. Very quickly, the plan (for Skaikru to share the space with Azgeda, the clan with whom they'd made their treaty) fell apart.
Abby broke the news to Clarke en route back to Polis that Indra and Trikru had been at the temple when the bunker was uncovered. Obviously, that meant Trikru would be in the bunker.

What's a midseason finale on The CW without a major cliffhanger?
When we left The 100 back in December, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) had executed Finn, her former lover, out of mercy before the grounders could torture him for killing 18 innocent people. Later, Clarke narrowly escaped a similar fate herself thanks to Lexa's (Alycia Debnam Carey) own sense of mercy. Furthermore, Harper (Chelsey Reist) was still missing following her kidnapping by Dr. Tsing (Rekha Sharma), whom we left screaming and strapped to a gurney as the good doctor extracted bone marrow from her hip.

Is Mount Weather escapable?
The CW’s post-apocalyptic drama, recently renewed for a third season, returns with Jasper (Devon Bostwick), Monty (Christopher Larkin), Maya (Eve Harlow) and the gang hatching a plan to get help from outside the impenetrable walls of Mount Weather.
Related: ‘The 100’ Boss Explains Mid-Season Finale’s Heartbreaking Death
The desperate move comes after Harper (Chelsey Reist) is captured for an unapproved bone marrow transplant, as it’s believed that the blood of the 47 will help the other 300 Mount Weather residents live comfortably on the surface.
It’s only when Monty begins listing the obstacles facing them, as seen in ETonline’s exclusive first look at this Wednesday’s winter premiere, that the group begins to realize this plan may be 99.9 percent impossible. What exactly do they have to do? Oh, just get through two feet of wall, hack into the mainframe and somehow get the guards’ schedules, copper wire, a...

I reviewed the original 12 Rounds, which starred the WWE’s John Cena way back in 2009 and now, some four years later, the clumsily titled 12 Rounds 2 is set for a straight to DVD release – bypassing the cinematic release the original received – sans Cena, but with fellow WWE superstar Randy Orton in the lead role. And like it’s WWE Studios stable-mate The Marine (which also starred John Cena), this sequel bares no relation to the original film besides the “rounds” format – featuring all new characters, new situations and a new cast.
This time round (groan) Randy Orton stars as paramedic Nick Malloy, who finds himself caught in a deadly 12-round game of cat and mouse with a vigilante tied to the paramedic’s past. With little time to...

Actor turned director Brett Donowho (5 Souls, The Sacred) is back behind the camera for his third film, No Tell Motel, which follows Megan Walsh and her friends who, after being stranded in the middle of nowhere, are forced to spend the night in an abandoned roadside motel. Little do they know the crumbling structure is haunted by the spirits of its former owners, including a vengeful little ghost named Angela. As the haunting turns violent and the group’s number dwindles, Megan realizes that the key to her survival lies in uncovering the secrets of the motel’s tortured past. And even that might not be enough to save her.

*here be spoilers. Director: Brett Donowho. Writer: T.J. Cimfel. Cast: Angel McCord, Chelsey Reist, Johnny Hawkes, Rileigh Chalmers, Andrew MacFarlane, Stephanie Van Dyck, James Tyce, Heath Whitelock and Chalie Howes. A no tell motel is a place for late night encounters. In Brett Donowho's movie, No Tell Motel, those encounters do not involve sex; they involve ghostly visits. This roadside getaway hosts and assortment of ghouls. Angela (Rileigh Chalmers) leads the supernatural charge, while five friends cannot offer much of a defence. Meanwhile, each visitor suffers from some hidden secret. Everything is eventually put out into the open including internal organs. The film's story involves two tales. The first tale starts the film. A young girl is left unattended and she soon finds a bloody impact with a car's grill. She is killed instantly. The parents cannot let go. No Tell Motel then transitions into a second tale, which is set in the present.

Motels creep me out. Even the nicer ones. You just never know what kind of stuff has gone down in the place you're ready to lay your head for the evening. Take our advice, though... should you run into the No Tell Motel in your travels, stay far away from Room 6.

Secrets we keep from each other can come back to haunt us: No Tell Motel is a compelling story of isolation, desperation, and the darkest kind of redemption. The old Horak place, an abandoned roadside motel tucked away in the woods just off Route H, is the stuff of local legend. The place where little Angela Horak got run down in the middle of the road.
