Celia Rowlson-Hall made our 25 New Faces list in 2015 on the basis of her entirely original, stunningly assured and nearly indescribable feature debut, Ma. A year later, we picked for the list her film’s composer, former Dirty Projectors drummer Brian McComber, who not only composed her amazing score but did similarly outre work for Trey Shults’s Krisha. As he relates in our profile, the experimentalism of Rowlson-Hall’s film let him go slightly wild with the score; hence, the evocative gongs and cymbals. Now, over at the Soundcloud page of the film’s production company, Memory (yet another 25 New Face […]...

Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino stopped by The Daily Show Wednesday night to discuss music industry sexism and her accusations of sexual misconduct against music publicist Heathcliff Berru.
Cosentino's talk with host Trevor Noah comes four months after she publicly supported the Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman, who was the first in what later turned into a series of women to share her story about being allegedly harassed and assaulted by Berru. Inspired by Coffman, Cosentino and many other women in the industry shared their stories, which later led to...

As always, the success of any film involves a lot of parts, and while SXSW and Cannes darling "Krisha" has rightfully earned acclaim for its performances, notably that of the film's lead Krisha Fairchild. The immediacy of the direction by Trey Edward Shults has also played a vital role. But as we noted in our review, the score by Brian McComber, who brings a distinct touch of Penderecki, doesn't go unnoticed either. Read More: The Movies That Changed My Life: 'Krisha' Director Trey Edward Shults A former member of acclaimed indie band Dirty Projectors, McOmber zeroed in on the emotional beats felt by the titular character as she makes a surprise, and not particularly welcome return home during the holidays. “It’s a turbulent film that unfolds over the course of one fateful Thanksgiving Day. You know how the coolest people in college were the kids who disavowed all that social climbing and just, you know, talked about socialism with their folk music groups? (Your experience may vary.) Well, if Vampire Weekend is the successful band version of those music groups (and it is), then Bernie Sanders is the cool professor who shows up at all their concerts. Sanders appeared with Vampire Weekend — minus their keyboardist, Rostom Batmanglij, who recently left the group, as well as their bassist Chris Baio, who's on tour with his side band — in Iowa for a campaign rally last night. Also in attendance: Dirty Projectors' Dave Longstreth, comedy duo the Lucas Brothers, and the Hawkapellas, an all-female a cappella group from the University of Iowa. Watch Sanders swing his arms to the music. Watch nearly every member of the crowd choose a different direction in which to sway. There's...

Monday night on Twitter, Amber Coffman of the band Dirty Projectors recounted a story about a prominent music publicist whom she says sexually harassed her years ago. She named Heathcliff Berru — publicist at Life or Death PR and Management, which represents Odd Future, D’Angelo, Diiv, Killer Mike, Of Montreal, Speedy Ortiz, Cloud Nothings, and more — as the person in question who "rubbed my ass and bit my hair at a bar a couple years ago." Coffman says she was inspired to go public with her story on Twitter last night after looking Berru up and finding not only that he is still working at Life or Death, but that he now represents some of her friends in the industry. "I've been told many women have had scary stories about him for years but are scared to speak up. And dudes overlook it and keep hiring him," she writes. "Tired...

Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Joanna Newsom hushed the Late Show audience on Tuesday with a commanding performance of "Leaving the City," a track from her recently released fourth LP, Divers. Newsom's inimitable coo and ethereal harp took center stage, with two keyboardists and a drummer interjecting for vivid dynamic shifts.
Newsom told Rolling Stone that the complex interlocking rhythms on "Leaving the City" required her to design her own notational system – "like, these crescent moons and squares and triangles." One of the LP's key themes, she added, is "the question of what's available to...

SpongeBob Squarepants is about to trade in Bikini Bottom for Broadway: The Nickelodeon series is set to become a musical.
There are few details, plot-wise, about the show, but in a splashy press release, Nickelodeon (which is producing the show) and director Tina Landau teased some big names that will be involved in the project. Music will be provided by Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T.I., and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. In addition to that eclectic list, David Bowie is also writing a song, and Coulton will write additional lyrics.
"I was drawn to this project not only for its wild theatrical possibility, but also because I felt 'SpongeBob,' at its core, is a layered and hilarious ensemble comedy," Landau said in a statement. She continued:...

Low City is the combination of producer Abe Seiferth and composer/musician Jeremy Turner and their very talented friends. This may not mean much up front, until you consider Seiferth has been behind the decks for bands like Yeasayer and Reggie Watts; Turner has performed with Arcade Fire, New York's Metropolitan Opera and David Byrne; and their pals are in Bon Iver and Dirty Projectors. I'm in love with Low City's energizing song "Race Up Race Down" and today we premiere the music video by director Dean Winkler (Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Nam June Paik), who describes it as "a visual meditation on global warming." The band's aesthetic "is inspired by the retro-futurism of films like 'Blade Runner,' and Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'"so maybe that's why I feel like I've been on a trip to space.

1. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything (Constellation)
I think of Silver Mt. Zion as the post-rock Pogues. They have the drunken singing and the scratchy fiddling and the punky energy, but in a sort of gritty yet sophisticated Godspeed! You Black Emperor musical context (and in fact founder/singer/guitarist Efrim Manuel Menuck used to be in Godspeed!). On their eighth album, the added intensity that appeared on their previous album is increased; this may be their best yet. Best describe as an updated homage to 50′s French cinema, Matthew Lessner’s history with the festival dates back to the showing of his short film By Modern Measure (2008). His second trip came with the experimental, outdoorsy New Frontier programmed feature debut The Woods (2011), which comes with a built-in asterisk of sorts since it was the very first film at Sundance to have used Kickstarter for funding. His third visit Chapel Perilous (2014) claimed the Short Filmmaking Audience Award. Sprinkle some music video directing work with the likes The Dirty Projectors and The Raveonettes and we’ve got a burgeoning filmmaker who works with a biting tongue-in-cheek tonality and a visual range that appears limitless. Recently profiled at the Us in Progress Paris fest, Automatic at Sea proposes a good dose of fantasy with subdued reality (see set pic above).

I’m hoping that Major Lazer’s latest video for 'Scare Me' will serve as the theatrical trailer for an upcoming movie about the Major. With a cast featuring the never 'Expendable' Terry Crews as Major Lazer himself, this video is a live action version of the animated hero we have been waiting for. Born from the DJ-dna of Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Jillionaire, 'Scare Me' is the latest single off of the group’s 2013 release Free the Universe. Major Lazer has set out to do just that in the video which is an action packed fight fest featuring the Major along with his trusty femme fatale sidekick, Knife Fight (Lauren London). The Pitchfork Music Festival was in high gear Saturday, packed with artists comprising the heaviest of the weekend's performances -- and lots of screaming.
Ear plugs were a must for most of Saturday when the likes of The Swans, Savages and The Breeders took the noise to tinnitus-inducing levels. All the bands on the darker side of the rock spectrum shredded and screamed under the (still hot!) sun until Solange cooled things off her exuberant early-evening grooves.
Here's our roundup of Saturday's highlights (story continues after the slideshow):
Phosphorescent was among the few poppier, harmonious acts amid a day packed with screamers. Noodle-y electronic burts gave their mellow songs a jolt of psych-summer jamminess -- all to great effect -- while songs like "Nothing Was Stolen" ranked among the day's finest examples of vocal harmonies. Perhaps knowing Saturday would have such moments in short supply, the band capped off...

J. Cole, "Born Sinner" (Roc Nation/Columbia)
J. Cole continues to live up to the hype he initially got from rap great Jay-z, delivering an assortment of quality songs on his sophomore album, "Born Sinner."
Like his 2011 debut album, the 28-year-old primarily produces his new offering with some help from No I.D. and Elite. Cole shows improvement as a producer and lyricist, spitting rhymes with honesty and clarity throughout the 16 tracks, which include two entertaining skits and two interludes.
The North Carolina native raps about temptation and commitment struggles on several songs such as "Trouble," "Runaway" and "She Knows," which effectively co-stars Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors.
Cole raps about the stronghold of lust on the Kendrick Lamar-assisted "Forbidden Fruit," which samples jazz organist Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew." It could be the album's best track if Lamar had been featured on more than just the hook.

I think of videos like Vampire Weekend's "Diane Young" as sharing the same vein as LCD Soundsystem's "Drunk Girls," with nothing particularly harmful, or overtly glorifying, but objectively silly, and God love 'em for it. In the single-room vid, the band sits besides dance, rock and pop brethren Santigold, Chromeo, Sky Ferreira, Despot, David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) and others at the Indiest Last Supper Ever. Odd shenanigans like smoking a sax bong and kissing an espresso-maker ensue. Nashville, Tenn. — Major Lazer is a work in progress.
Diplo's part-time project, with a new album "Free the Universe" out this week, is ever-evolving as the producer and his cohorts tinker with a sound they think might provide a clue to the future of electronic dance music.
"Everything's changing now. Edm's shifting," Diplo said. "The house music thing exploded two years and now people are looking for something different. ... What we do as Major Lazer, we just incorporate everything. We're just DJs at heart and selectors. We love all kinds of music."
That's reflected in the Caribbean-flavored "Free the Universe" with its reggae and dancehall influences, but the group that also includes Chris Leacock, the producer known as Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire (Leighton Walsh) pushes the envelope much farther on the follow-up to 2009's "Guns Don't Kill People ... Lazers Do."
