Those who know who Roland Emmerich is will probably know that the director is known for his epic films, a lot of which are also major disaster films. Some of these major titles include Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 10,000 BC (2008), 2012 (2009), White House Down (2013), Midway (2019), and Moonfall (2022). But, Emmerich is now shifting to television, as his new project is about to be released on Peacock this summer. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser trailer has been released.
The project in question is the epic sword-and-sandal series Those About to Die, which is set in Ancient Rome. The series will be based on the book of the same name by writer and journalist Daniel P. Mannix; interesting enough, the same book served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s epic classic, Gladiator.

The idea is quite simple, and its simplicity doesn’t bother me at first glance. The title Sixty Minutes reminds me of movies like 88 Minutes, but the plot of this movie is not based on any bomb that has to be defused or a criminal has to be caught. The story of Sixty Minutes revolves around the life of an Mma fighter who has to decide whether to participate in his next fight or travel a fair distance and meet his daughter before 6 pm, which, if you are good at decoding movie titles, means that he has to make this choice at 5 pm.
The stakes of this movie are interesting and a little bit silly at the same time. If our Mma fighter doesn’t reach his daughter in time, then he might lose custody of her. Before you ask, there isn’t a court case going on; it’s just her birthday,...

When the film’s tagline is “Fight everyone…or lose everything,” you know it’s going to be insane, and Oliver Kienle’s Sixty Minutes trailer doesn’t disappoint.
In “Sixty Minutes,” the adrenaline rush of a father’s anxious race against time collides with the fierceness of Mma fighting. As time ticks down for Octavio, played by Emilio Sakraya, a one-hour window to get to his daughter’s birthday party becomes essential.
This high-stakes journey sends Octavio on a risky chase through Berlin, testing his limits and willpower.

"This is bigger than you think." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a German race-against-the-clock thriller called Sixty Minutes (oder 60 Minuten auf Deutsch), arriving in January for streaming on Netflix. 60 Minutes is an action-packed race against time. Leading actor and multi-talent Emilio Sakraya lets his fists fly as mixed martial arts fighter Octavio. Mma fighter Octavio has one hour to make it to his daughter's birthday party across Berlin or he'll lose custody forever. To reach her in time he turns down an important fight, which puts him in a dangerous position with some even more dangerous people. Of course. Suddenly Octavio isn't only trapped in a ruthless race against time but also a chase through the entire city that pushes him to his limits. Also starring Dennis Mojen, Marie Mouroum, Paul Wollin, Aristo Luis, Morik Heydo, and Florian Schmidtke. This reminds me a lot of the Berlin classic Run Lola Run,...

Back in December, it was announced that Warrior Nun, a live-action series loosely based on Ben Dunn’s manga-style comic book Warrior Nun Areala, had been cancelled after a two season run on the Netflix streaming service. Then a couple months ago, series creator Simon Barry revealed that fans’ #SaveWarriorNun campaign was resulting in the show getting an epic revival. We assumed that meant Warrior Nun season 3, possibly on Netflix, possibly at a different network or streaming service. But now executive producer Dean English has taken to the WarriorNunSaved website to clarify that Warrior Nun is actually being revived with a trilogy of feature films!
English wrote, “I’m the person who found the graphic novel and asked the dangerous question of, “What if?” First of all, I need to start by thanking all of you loyal fans. It’s because of you and your incredible energy that we keep...

When shows get cancelled by one network, they often have a chance to find a new home. Sometimes it doesn’t work out (I was surprised The Winchesters wasn’t able to find a new home after being cancelled by The CW), sometimes it does… And apparently Warrior Nun, a live-action series loosely based on Ben Dunn’s manga-style comic book Warrior Nun Areala, is one of the success stories. It was announced back in December that Warrior Nun had been cancelled after two seasons on the Netflix streaming service, but now series creator Simon Barry has revealed that season 3 is going to happen – and he says it’s going to be an epic revival!
Barry shared the news on Twitter, saying, “Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts – #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more Epic than you could imagine.

“Rhinegold,” a biopic about young Iranian-Kurdish immigrant Giwar Hajabi, also known as Xatar, who rose from being a violent drug dealer and ex-convict to one of Germany’s most successful rap stars and music producers, has become the biggest box office hit ever for director Fatih Akin.
The film, which screens at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, chronicles Hajabi’s eventful life, beginning with the panicked escape of his musician parents from Tehran during the 1979 revolution. Fleeing to the country’s Kurdistan Province, they join the Kurdish rebellion. It is there, during a violent assault by the Iranian military, that Hajabi’s mother, hiding in a bat-filled cave, gives birth to her son.
Hoping for a better life in Europe, his parents travel west to Iraq, where, suspected of being spies, they are imprisoned. Released months later, they find asylum first in Paris, then in Bonn.

East and west clash in Rheingold, the latest feature from Fatih Akin, which takes him back to the streets of urban Germany after 2019’s controversial serial-killer drama The Golden Glove. This too, though, is a biopic of sorts, with a similarly notorious subject matter: Kurdish rapper, record label boss and sometime jailbird Giwar Hajabi, Aka Xatar.
Born in a bat-infested cave under heavy bombing during the Iran-Iraq war, Hajabi — still only 40 — has had an interesting life, to put it mildly. One suspects this often warts-and-all portrait is simply the tip of a very dark iceberg (the eye-popping extent of Hajabi’s drug-dealing career is only glimpsed in a brief montage), but a charismatic, even vulnerable performance by star Emilio Sakraya is enough to keep us onside.
The start is bold, with a would-be epic set-up that it can’t quite deliver on: Hajabi and his three accomplices are delivered to a prison in Syria,...

Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin shot to international fame when his fourth feature Head-On won the Golden Bear at the 2004 Berlinale. Since then he’s competed in Cannes twice, winning Best Screenplay for The Edge of Heaven and earning Diane Kruger a Best Actress prize for In the Fade. That’s a very impressive streak carried by poignant, deeply sensitive observations of the Turkish immigrant experience. This track record took quite a hit with his ill-received serial killer portrait The Golden Glove in 2019, a rare film so repulsive it practically smells. And now Akin’s rebounded somewhat with a thoroughly entertaining (if wholly unambitious) biopic that could well become his biggest commercial success to date.
Premiering at the 30th edition of the Filmfest Hamburg, Rheingold tells the rather extraordinary life story of refugee-turned-gangster-turned-musician Giwar “Xatar” Hajabi, who we first meet in the Syrian desert in 2010, where he’s kept in captivity and tortured alongside two buddies.

"How do we record an album in jail?" The Match Factory has revealed an official trailer for Rheingold, a new film from acclaimed Turkish-German director Fatih Akin. He last made the exceptionally disgusting film The Golden Glove which almost ended his career. Next up is this one - premiering at the Hamburg Film Festival before it opens in Germany in October. Fatih Akin's Rheingold captures the life of German hip-hop rapper, entrepreneur, and ex-convict Giwar Hajabi - best known by his stage name "X A T A R" or Xatar. Born to Kurdish parents in Iran, he was imprisoned in Iraq for being Kurdish. From the hell of that Iraqi prison, Giwar Hajabi came to Germany as a young boy with his family in the mid-1980s and fought through even more challenges to make a name for himself. Emilio Sakraya stars as Giwar, with a cast including Mona Pirzad,...

German-Turkish film director, screenwriter, and producer Fatih Akin has signed a first-look deal with WarnerMedia, the first such agreement the filmmaker has made in his career.
The multi-year deal will cover German and Turkish language movies and series for theatrical release, TV and for HBO Max.
Akin and WarnerMedia have previously worked together on three movies: the 2017 Golden Globe winning In The Fade, for which Diane Kruger won Cannes Film Festival’s Best Actress prize; the 2019 pic The Golden Glove, which debuted at Berlin in competition; and Rheingold starring Emilio Sakraya, which will be released theatrically on October 27 this year.
Hannes Heyelmann, EVP Programming Emea at WarnerMedia, said: “We’ve worked with Fatih Akin for a number of years now and this deal furthers our fantastic relationship together. We know how important local content is to our audiences and together with Fatih we want to produce some great German and Turkish language content.

German cinema looks set for a major boost this year from some of the country’s most commercially successful and critically acclaimed directors tackling such eclectic subject matter as U.S. torture in Guantánamo, the impact of bipolar disorder on family, and a folkloric love story about the Grim Reaper.
The pandemic postponed a number of scheduled 2020 productions, which will likely make 2021 a busy year as production companies make up lost time.
Andreas Dresen, Til Schweiger, Michael Bully Herbig, Hans-Christian Schmid, Sönke Wortmann and the late Joseph Vilsmaier all have high-profile projects in the works or set to hit theaters (when they reopen) this year.
Dresen explores the injustice of America’s war on terror in the tentatively titled “Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush.” Dresen, who enjoyed a major hit with the award-winning 2018 biopic “Gundermann,” reteamed with writer Laila Stieler on the fact-based pic about Rabiye Kurnaz (Meltem Kaptan), a Turkish housewife in Bremen,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Tribes of Europa episodes 1-6.
Netflix’ latest German sci-fi Tribes of Europa comes from the same producers that brought us twisty time-travel sci-fi Dark. If you’ve already binged all six episodes, you may have lingering questions, we certainly do.
There was plenty left unexplained by that cliffhanger of an ending, which we can only hope suggests that there may be a second season on the horizon.
The series follows three siblings of the Origine tribe, all of whom end up following very different paths after they discover a mysterious cube. The youngest, Elja (played by David Ali Rashed) arguably ends up on the most important route of all, beginning a quest to find out more around the unusual object. Liv (played by Henriette Confurius) plays a Katniss Everdeen-esque young girl, who will do anything to protect her family. Lastly, the eldest of the siblings, Kiano...

Post-apocalyptic adventure series “Tribes of Europa,” which bows Friday on Netflix, is the latest sci-fi/fantasy show out of Germany, where the genre is heating up.
Created by Philip Koch and produced by Wiedemann & Berg Television, the company behind Netflix hit “Dark,” “Tribes of Europa” follows three siblings as they struggle to survive in a new Europe emerging from cataclysm. Henriette Confurius, Emilio Sakraya (“Warrior Nun”), David Ali Rashed and Oliver Masucci (“Enfant Terrible”) star.
Set in 2074, the story unfolds in a land divided into micro-states and tribes — some peaceful, others bloodthirsty.
It was 2016’s Brexit referendum that inspired the series, Koch tells Variety. As a supporter of the European Union, Koch found the decision “very shocking.”
Since then, however, the pandemic, a growing political divide in the U.S., not to mention the Capitol Insurrection in Washington, D.C., have made the premise of a show about the collapse...

This Warrior Nun review contains no spoilers.
Netflix’s Warrior Nun is a loose adaptation of the American manga Warrior Nun Areala. The comic follows the titular Warrior Nun, Sister Shannon Masters, and her friends in The Order of the Cruciform Sword, as they fight the forces of evil. The show is something of a spiritual successor to the comic, which was first published in 1994. It takes the broad premise, a religious sect of nuns and priests that fight evil under the leadership of a superpowered Warrior Nun, and reimagines it for the modern audience. Some characters transition directly from the text, like Shotgun Mary (Toya Turner), while others, like comic lead Sister Shannon, are left behind in favor of new characters created for the show.
On paper, Warrior Nun is ‘Extremely My Shit’. Badass women warriors, magic, demons, lore… And for the most part, the show lives up to its premise,...
