It took a village to bring Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to life and into homes.
The Middle-earth fantasy drama wowed Emmy voters with its craft- work, scoring nominations in main-title design, prosthetic makeup, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, sound editing, special visual effects and original main-title theme music. Set thousands of years before the Third Age of the Peter Jackson-helmed “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, the first season introduced viewers to elves, dwarves, orcs and Harfoots (one of three hobbit races) during a time of prosperity and relative peace.
Costume designer Kate Hawley and her team built more than 2,000 outfits. By using vegetable dyes as well as berry stains, she achieved unique shades and tones for her costumes.

“There’s a joy I think, to the dwarves, that I get from the source material,” explains Owain Arthur. The actor played the dwarven Prince Durin IV on Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” He dug through the many texts from J.R.R. Tolkien in order to discover as much as he could about the race of stout mine-dwellers, and felt determined to find where the joy existed in Durin. When Arthur arrived on set in New Zealand, he soon unearthed that joy not just in his own character study, but in the chemistry with his costars. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
As luck would have it, the dwarf kingdom of Moria, located deep within the Misty Mountains, provided a perfect way for the actor to relate to dwarf culture. “There’s a working class element to them that I can connect to,” reveals Arthur.

"The Lord of the Rings" and the Beatles are now sorta-kinda connected through Peter Jackson's filmography and the docuseries "Get Back," but don't be alarmed if you're watching Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" and hear what sounds like Satanic backmasking, subliminally inception-ing you with hidden song messages. That's not Satanic backmasking, silly! It's just a magical mystery incantation of the Elvish variety, layered into the sound design. Supervising sound editor Damian Del Borrello and his team came up with this motif after he sought the aid of a dialect coach for "The Rings of Power."
/Film's Jack Giroux recently spoke with Del Borrello as part of an exclusive interview digging into the behind-the-scenes secrets of the series. After meeting with the dialect coach, Del Borrello said he came away with "a fantastic phrase, which was an incantation mastered by The Stranger [Daniel Weyman] in a scene that actually didn't make the cut.

Of all the histrionics over changes made to author J.R.R. Tolkien's source material in "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" — new, original characters, a (potential) new origin for a key piece of Middle-earth lore, and other differences that inevitably come up when translating a story to another medium altogether — one particular addition largely flew under the radar. While Morfyyd Clark's portrayal of the elf warrior Galadriel caused no shortage of hot takes and strong opinions, the series creators managed to weave a rather touching and poignant storyline revolving around a recurring item never mentioned by Tolkien.
Throughout the first season, Galadriel's dagger (which originally belonged to her late brother Finrod) symbolized all of the character's rage and need for vengeance against Sauron. That dagger was the first thing Galadriel grabbed while turning her back on the Undying Lands of Valinor and returning to Middle-earth at the end of the premiere.

It's a consistent staple across all big-budget endeavors throughout this industry: Even in the most complex and exorbitant productions, the devil is always in the details. The most epic stories told on the largest possible canvas can become completely undone by inattention to the smaller things that make narratives work. But if that's the case, then the opposite can be true, too. The first season of a show like "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" may have justified the incredibly high price that Amazon Studios paid of it thanks to an emphasis on getting the tiniest, most seemingly inconsequential details right.
Though purists will inevitably quibble about the exact level of faithfulness to J.R.R. Tolkien's texts in those details, it remains a fact that the creative team poured immense amounts of effort and care into every level of production. While the most obvious and headline-grabbing aspects always receive the greatest attention,...

Supervising sound editor Damian Del Borrello worked on "The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power" for around two and a half years. When he asked how I was, I was tired, but how can you tell someone who's just completed a 36-month-long audio marathon that you're tired with a straight face? (I still told him.) The scale of the show, visually and audibly, speaks for itself in terms of the epic workload involved in creating a new vision of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world.
After completing his extensive time on the series, Borrello ("Ash vs. Evil Dead") remains delighted and proud of his work. "As a creative who works in sound, the opportunities presented by a show like 'Lord of the Rings' are exciting," he told us. "From a personal perspective, I live in Wellington, New Zealand, and I moved here specifically to work with some of the...

“I felt a real sense of responsibility,” confesses “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” co-supervising sound editor Damian Del Borrello. The artist had the daunting task of creating a Middle Earth soundscape for Amazon’s epic series while contending with high expectations thanks to Peter Jackson’s iconic film trilogy. Del Borrello moved to Wellington, New Zealand to work alongside the artists from those films, so he was determined to honor their work while giving the fans a worthy sonic landscape. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
