Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also drew a goose egg.
Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all.

November comes with many things; crisp days of dwindling daylight, falling leaves and dropping temperatures. It comes with bustling grocery stores, hours prepping Thanksgiving dinners, unbuttoned trousers and Black Friday sales. But November also comes with complicated feelings for many Indigenous artists.
Native American Heritage Month can oftentimes feel like the only time of year when people are interested in hearing Indigenous stories; the one moment where our voices are collectively uplifted, only to be cast aside again Dec. 1. But to limit the celebration and wealth of our languages, cultures, and history of our communities to a mere 30 days is a disservice to us all.
These ten projects from artists across Turtle Island, spanning multiple mediums, each invoke a sense of pride, resilience and love, and mark some of my favourite pieces of art — Native or not.
As November blows by, I encourage readers to spend the rest of it curling up with these 10 hilarious,...

Talking to Ians, Guneet said that she is optimistic about the big win changing the dynamics of storytelling in India for the good.
She said: "It’s definitely a new dawn for Indian cinema. I hope the Oscar wins, both of ‘Naatu Naatu’ and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, encourage many filmmakers, many women and storytellers to come up with more disruptive ideas so that the world recognises the power of Indian cinema at large."
The producer credits the streaming giant Netflix as it helped her 45-minute short film reach out to the entire world and left each set of eyeballs mesmerised by the sheer beauty of the film’s director Kartiki Gonsalves’ lens.

Exclusive: The award-winning documentary Long Line of Ladies, about a 13-year-old Native American girl’s coming of age ceremony in the Karuk tradition, will premiere on the New York Times Op-Docs channels Tuesday, the first day of Indigenous Peoples Month.

As part of the ceremony, Ahty will fast for three and a half days and wear a taáv, a kind of feathered veil obscuring her sight, for four days. The 22-minute long film doesn’t show the actual ceremony itself – “the filmmakers refrained from filming the event out of respect for the traditions...

Ten-year-old Texan Marlie McDonald has retired from mutton busting, having outgrown the sport. But in her time she could outride the best of them.
Marlie’s exploits in the arena are documented in the short film Just Hold On, especially her gold buckle-winning effort at RodeoHouston in 2018. Just six years old then, McDonald climbed aboard a sheep, grabbed a couple fistfuls of wool and when the gate opened and the critter bolted, she kept her grip for 90 feet, earning a perfect score.
“All the way to the wall!” hollered an excited announcer. “She’s done it!”
“My heart was racing,” she recounts in the film directed by Oscar winner Rayka Zehtabchi and Sam A. Davis, “like I was having a panic attack.”
“I think she likes challenges,” observes her cowboy-hatted grandpa, leaning on a gnarled wooden cane. “And she has a temperament that makes her want to do what she...

Historically, there has been a lack of women behind the camera. In fact, a 2021 study conducted by San Diego State University’s Dr. Martha M. Lauzen reported that overall, women made up just 25% of those working in behind-the-scenes roles, such as directors, editors, writers, and producers, on the top grossing 250 films of the year. However, at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, 52% of the films were directed by women.

When the initial announcement was made that eight categories would be pre-taped and then edited into the 2022 Oscars broadcast, we all knew the short film categories — Best Documentary Short, Best Live Action Short and Best Animated Short — would be the first on the chopping block. While these projects are the least seen of all the Oscar nominees, the categories have given us some amazing moments over the years. So rather than wallow in our sadness about not seeing these doled out live, let’s take a look back at five of the best speeches from past Best Documentary Short winners. Hopefully the academy realizes soon that the short categories are something special and should be left alone.
As a reminder, the five Best Documentary Short nominees at the 2022 Oscars are: “Audible” (Matt Ogens and Geoff McLean), “Lead Me Home” (Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk), “The Queen of Basketball” (Ben Proudfoot...

Chicago – Groundbreaking filmmakers often start at the South by Southwest Festival. Influencers like the Duplass brothers, Chicago’s Joe Swanberg and Lena Dunham got their first prominent notices at the fest. In that spirit, the 2022 SXSW Grand Jury Awards were announced on March 15th.
The top film in Narrative Features was “I Love My Dad” by writer/director James Morosini, featuring Patton Oswalt and Morosini himself as father and son reconnecting under odd circumstances. The Documentary Feature awardee was “Master of Light” by Rosa Ruth Boesten, an unusual profile of painter George Anthony Morton, as he struggles to render his mother. And the Narrative Short deemed best is by writer/director Tang Yi, entitled “All the Crows in the World,” with its “inventive story and critiques of patriarchal culture.”

Back together in person after two years of going virtual during the pandemic, the Austin-based SXSW Film Festival has announced its juried prizes. As in previous editions, the awards show happened at the midpoint of the nine-day event, before SXSW’s music events suck much of the attention away from film screenings.
The top prize in narrative feature competition went to “I Love My Dad,” written and directed by James Morosini, who also stars as a younger version of himself in this uncomfortable retelling of how he was catfished by his father (played by Patton Oswalt).
“Morosini displays massive empathy as a filmmaker to get into the mind of the father he feels betrayed by, and also as an actor portraying the impact of that betrayal,” said the jury, who also gave special jury prizes to the cast and crew of “It Is in Us All” and Elizaveta Yankovskaya, star of the Russian film “Nika.

Netflix has bolstered its slate of Oscar short hopefuls with the acquisition of “Three Songs for Benazir.”
Directed by Gulistan and Elizabeth Mirzaei, the 22-minute docu tells the story of Shaista, a young man who is a refugee living in modern-day Afghanistan. Newly married to Benazir and living in a camp for displaced persons in Kabul, Shaista struggles to balance his dreams of being the first from his tribe to join the Afghan National Army with pressure from his father and brother to start a family.
“Three Songs for Benazir,” which is set to stream on the service in 2022, is qualified for Academy Award consideration in the documentary short category.
The directing duo, who are married and split their time between California and Afghanistan, filmed the short during a four-year period.

In 2019, when I took the stage with director Rayka Zehtabchi to accept the Academy Award for documentary short subject for “Period. End of Sentence,” I held the Oscar high and declared “a period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education.” Nearly 26.9 million viewers in 225 countries heard the rallying cry for menstrual justice. As dizzying as that number is, it represents only a small fraction of the 800 million people on earth who are menstruating at any given time.
Until we have policies that recognize that menstrual health is a biological process fundamental to our physical, emotional, and economic well-being, gender equity can never be achieved.
Set in India, “Period. End of Sentence.” chronicles how attitudes toward menstruation change when women run a pad-manufacturing enterprise in their village. As the executive director of the Pad Project (the non-profit behind the Netflix doc), I am proud the film sparked a worldwide...

Exclusive: Insecure co-star and producer Natasha Rothwell has signed a multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature. Under the rich pact, which is in conjunction with Disney General Entertainment’s Bipoc Creator Initiative led by Tara Duncan, Rothwell will develop new projects for television via her Big Hattie Productions. Financial details are not being revealed but I hear the three-year pact is in the eight-figure range.
“Natasha is the real deal triple threat. I’ve been a fan of her writing for years and have loved watching her career blossom in front of and behind the camera,” said Duncan. “It’s an honor to provide a platform for one of the best comedic talents in the business.”

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.
#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.
This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

The cancelation of South by Southwest earlier this month was a huge blow to people across the industry, but short filmmakers whose work was set to debut there were particularly hard hit. With no festival, these filmmakers — many of them early in their careers — were suddenly without a platform to widely share their films. Now, boutique distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories and tech company Mailchimp have a solution: Today, they launched an online platform offering the vast majority of this year’s SXSW shorts online for free.
The site will feature around 75 films, all for free with no login required. Most are available now, with more to be added in the coming days.

Normally, the SXSW Film Festival award winners are handed out during a lively ceremony at the end of the first weekend, but this year required some improvisation. When the SXSW became the first major film event to cancel in the face of global pandemic, it was unclear what would happen to the hundreds of films and filmmakers primed for the late March festivities.
While many filmmakers were left struggling to figure out their next moves, the festival’s leadership opted to hand out awards to the films set to premiere at the festival, with the juries announced weeks earlier. SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson and her team made the decision to “continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available.”

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).
At last year’s Academy Awards, 53 women other than actresses were nominated as were 159 men. Women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories compared to 23.73% in 2018. Thirteen...

A coming-of-age film with actress Sanya Malhotra is on the cards for producer Guneet Monga of Oscar-winning short documentary "Period. End of Sentence." fame.
"We are doing a Hindi film. It's a film with Sanya Malhotra. It's a coming of age story of a young girl in a small town," Monga told Ians here on the sidelines of a screening of "Period. End of Sentence." organised by Netflix at The American Centre.
Delhi is a common factor between the producer and actress, who has been noticed for "Dangal", "Pataakha", "Badhaai Ho" and "Photograph".

Diversity was one of the biggest winners at the Oscars on Sunday, with three out of the four top acting awards won by non-white actors as Regina King, Mahershala Ali and Rami Malek triumphed for their roles in If Beale Street Could Talk, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, respectively. In 2015, not a single non-white actor was nominated in the acting categories.

Well, another Oscars is in the books! The 91st edition of the kudosfest featured a wide variety of speeches from winners. Some were eloquent and touching like Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King. Others served as a call to action like Best Adapted Screenplay victor Spike Lee and Best Documentary Short winner Melissa Berton. Others were just completely flabbergasted like Best Actress champ Olivia Colman. Here’s a look at the six speeches that stood out the most during this year’s ceremony.

Best Actress: Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Colman had the same stunned reaction that most of us had when she beat Glenn Close (“The Wife”) with her performance as Queen Anne. It was actually quite similar to Close’s surprised reaction when she won at the Golden Globes. When Colman finally collected herself she said,...

It’s been a bumpy road to this year’s 91st Oscar ceremony, a road plagued by controversies over hosts and category presentations. But to their credit, producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss kept the show moving, bringing it in at just over three hours. But after all of that behind-the-scenes drama, a combination of inspiring speeches and dynamic musical performances made this year’s ceremony an unqualified success.

Famed rock band Queen, represented in the multiple Oscar-winning film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” kicked off the show with Adam Lambert taking lead vocals for renditions of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” Whereas many Oscar ceremonies traditionally start on a more solemn and dignified note, it was refreshing to see stars like Best Actress-nominee Glenn Close, Allison Janney, and Javier Bardem rocking out in the audience.

At this year’s Academy Awards, 15 women won while 36 men (some multiple times) made their way to the stage of the Dolby Theater (these figures include the two men and two women are always guaranteed to win the acting awards). That marks a big increase from last year when the gender gap saw just 6 women winners versus 34 men. Scroll down to see the names of the 13 women who won at the 2019 Oscars besides actresses Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).
This year, 53 women other than actresses were nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this meant that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories (there will always be 10 women and 10 men nominated for the acting awards). At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in those 17 races.

Diversity, lighthearted silliness and many shots of Queen guitarist Brian May’s luxurious gray mane took centerstage at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday night during an otherwise unorthodox ceremony without a host. But even without a leader, the show went on, and Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, Black Panther and Roma each won multiple awards.
But even though the night got off to a bumpy start — an incredible performance by Queen and Adam Lambert followed by a clunky montage of films — the lack of direction made for an interesting night...
