Oscar-winning filmmaker and Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen is set to unveil his new installation, “Sunshine State,” at the International film festival Rotterdam (IFFR).
The installation will be presented at the Dutch landmark Kunsthal as part of Rotterdam’s Art Directions, a multi-disciplinary section dedicated to daring films, installations, exhibitions and live performance. Commissioned by IFFR, “Sunshine State” marks McQueen’s first major commission since “Year 3,” which bowed at Tate Britain in 2019.
“We are beyond thrilled to announce the world premiere of Steve McQueen’s latest installation during the next edition of IFFR,” said festival director Vanja Kaludjercic.
“McQueen is a visual artist and celebrated filmmaker who is known for his powerful and uncompromising vision and we are proud to offer a broad audience the opportunity to experience this newly commissioned work at Rotterdam’s cultural landmark Kunsthal,” Kaludjercic added. The executive said the festival will “celebrate contemporary cinema and...

NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ+ film festival, kicks off tonight with one of the most prominent documentaries of the fall.
Mayor Pete, directed by Jesse Moss, goes behind the scenes and on the stump with Pete Buttigieg as he became the first openly gay major presidential candidate, vying for the Democratic nomination. Buttigieg’s campaign was unusual not only because of his gay identity, but for his résumé: his background in elective office was limited to serving as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana.
“One of the reasons I wanted to make the film is there seemed to be something almost Frank Capra-esque about this notion that a small-town mayor could run for president and be competitive,” Moss tells Deadline. “Of course, I wasn’t sure that was possible when we set out to make the film.

Chicago – The ongoing REELING39 Festival … Chicago’s International Lbgtq+ showcase … will screen “Invisible,” a new documentary by T.J. Parsell. The original subtitle of the film was “Gay Women in Southern Music,” but the shortened title points out the nature of this industry subset to hide certain elements of their talent. For more info and tickets, click REELING39.
In the 1970s, there were a group of talented lesbian women who came independently to Nashville to pursue careers in country music. Most of them landed successful gigs in songwriting, penning tunes for some of the most acclaimed country stars like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw and more. “Invisible” profiles several of these pioneering women who dealt with issues in both their orientation and gender through a male-dominated and prejudiced industry, and how they embraced their evolution as time has passed into a more tolerant era.

The Nashville Film Festival will return in late September and early October with a hybrid slate of in-person and online screenings and events — with several music documentaries figuring into the programming, including docs about Brian Wilson, the pioneering 1970s all-female rock band Fanny and the MTV-era group A-ha, plus the world premiere of a film that takes John Hiatt and Jerry Douglas into Nashville’s famed RCA Studio B.
Music-based films take up only a sliver of the overall roster at the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 festival. Among narrative highlights, the festival will wrap up with A24’s “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play, with Karam and other guests from the film in attendance.
Altogether, 160 films — 45 of which are feature-length entries — have been selected for the 52nd annual festival, a little more than 50 of which will screen in-person at venues throughout Nashville. More than 30 of the features are getting their U.
