We haven't heard much about Oliver S. Milburn's The Harsh Light of Day here in the States for the past few years, but thanks to Jinga Films and Mvd, it's finally getting a North American DVD release in just a few more weeks.
Writer/director Milburn's The Harsh Light of Day stars Dan Richardson, Giles Alderson, Sophie Linfield, and Paul Jaques.
Look for the vampire revenge tale, which has been dubbed "Death Wish with fangs," on July 22nd.
Synopsis:
Daniel Shergold (Richardson), a writer on the occult, is a happily married man until the day his wife is murdered and he is left paralyzed in a brutal, seemingly random attack by a group of masked intruders. When the police are unable to find the perpetrators, Daniel is left in a pit of bitterness and anger.
Desperately seeking vengeance, Daniel is brought to the attention of a mysterious stranger who changes everything.

★★☆☆☆ Setting aside its overall quality (more on that later), emerging filmmaking talent Oliver S. Milburn's micro-budget supernatural thriller The Harsh Light of Day (2012) deserves substantial praise for its indie production model. Shot for relative peanuts with a cast of unknowns in his home town of Dorset, this week Milburn's debut capitalises on its recent limited theatrical run with a timely pre-Halloween DVD release, introducing new (and broader) audiences to its unashamedly generic, Diy charms.

American micro-budget filmmakers should do themselves a favor and watch writer/director Oliver S. Milburn’s feature debut The Harsh Light of Day. The compelling UK production, shot on location in Dorset, England, is a model of smart, economical storytelling. It’s also an extremely well acted and produced little film that fully understands, and makes the most of, its budgetary limitations.
During a violent home invasion, occult author Daniel Shergold (a somber Dan Richardson) is brutally beaten while his wife is tortured and killed. All the while the assailants, wearing hoodies and white masks, videotape the grisly events. Surviving the attack, Daniel is left a former shell of himself, crippled and paralyzed by guilt and anger. His only link to the outside world is his compassionate home nurse Fiona (Sophie Linfield...

I’m never quite sure how to approach Left Films’ output. On the one hand, these movies are cheap, derivative and lower than the lowest common denominator, while on the other you become so dispirited by the likes of Cowboys & Zombies and Ninjas vs. Vampire that you feel you really ought to give them some credit when they do finally get it slightly more right.
There is no getting away from the fact that their latest, The Harsh Light Of Day, is amateurish; that it’s filmed without style, scripted without flair and – at a mere 90 minutes – is far too short to really explore any of its characters, themes or fledgling mythology. But with a first-time feature director, a cast of unknowns and an estimated budget of around £100,000, what are you to realistically expect?

★★★☆☆ Oliver S. Milburn's The Harsh Light of Day (2012) is a promising, if flawed, debut film from a clearly ambitious director which offers up a modern twist on the Faustian pact, mixed with a revenge tale. After witnessing his wife's brutal murder at the hands of a snuff-film-making horror writer, Daniel Shergold (Dan Richardson) is left disabled and alone. That is until one night a mysterious stranger offers him a chance to enact his revenge against those responsible for destroying all Dan held dear.

Harsh Light Of Day
Stars: Dan Richardson, Giles Alderson, Sophie Linfield, Niki Felstead, Paul Jaques | Written and Directed by Oliver S. Milburn
If you’re making a movie should have at least one of the following: a) a decent script or b) decent actors. If you’ve got both, you’re laughing, if you’ve only got one of those two things, then if it’s good enough, it can make up for the failings of the other. If you have neither a well written script nor actors that can’t act, you’re in trouble.
Unfortunately, The Harsh Light of Day falls into this latter category. The film is a low-budget horror in which a writer is brutally attacked in his own home by video camera-wielding masked thugs. His wife is killed and he is left paralysed. A deal with a mysterious stranger, however, offers him the chance for revenge.

Somehow we managed to skip past Armageddon and the inevitable collapse of mankind. However, Multistory Films thought we could use a little more preparation for doomsday and have announced that they have optioned The Afterblight Chronicles story "School's Out" and have named Oliver S. Milburn as the writer.
Multistory Films looks to be coming out of the gate strong, having wrapped on their first feature, which was written as well as directed by Milburn. So obviously they like what he's doing so far, which says good things for this adaptation.
Emma Biggins, a producer at Multistory, had this to say about Milburn: "We are delighted to be working with Oliver again. He is a fresh new talent who proved himself as both a writer and director on The Harsh Light of Day. He knows his genres, is consistently full of ideas, and has outlined an exciting, action-packed screenplay with a...
