Cannes is not lacking for glamor this year, even in the documentary lineup.
Among the films premiering at the festival is Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes, an HBO feature documentary directed by Nanette Burstein and produced by J.J. Abrams, Glen Zipper, Sean M. Stuart, and Bill Gerber. The documentary draws on conversations with the star recorded decades ago for an autobiography.
“Entirely through the efforts of the [Taylor] estate, they were able to track those tapes down and reclaim them,” Zipper explained in an interview just before he flew to Cannes. “I remember getting an email from one of the trustees of the estate of a picture of the tapes in a box on a private jet on their way back to Los Angeles, strapped in with a seatbelt.”

The four-and-a-half minute long short, which also features narration from actor Jesse Williams and Dr. Carmen Johnson of Courtwatch PG, examines a growing movement to bring accountability to the judicial system by training court watchers to observe judicial proceedings “and report their findings to the public.”
The movement picked up steam during the pandemic when many court proceedings were made available online, allowing Courtwatch volunteers around the country to monitor arraignments, bond hearings and other judicial matters that might otherwise go unwitnessed by members of the public.

It’s never too early to relive one of the few comical moments from the final, chaotic months of the Trump presidency.
“Four Seasons Total Documentary,” a film centering around Rudy Giuliani’s botched attempt to contest the 2020 election results, is airing on MSNBC on Nov. 7 — exactly one year after the infamous debacle.
The documentary is less about the then-president’s lawyer accidentally booking a press conference outside a local landscaping company instead of the lavish Four Seasons Hotel, and instead focuses on a small business in Philadelphia that was unexpectedly thrust into the national spotlight when it agreed to host a political event in the middle of the presidential election.
MSNBC Films acquired rights to “Four Seasons Total Documentary” as part of the cable news channel’s attempt to bolster its presence in the documentary space. MSNBC Films is a new unit from the NBCUniversal-backed outlet that will...

"... and has historically been the focus of powerful politicians and CEOs, while average citizens pursuing the very same truth have been ridiculed and ostracized.
"The series examines the history of the phenomenon through cultural and political touchpoints, including shocking testimony from eyewitnesses across the country. The Hatfields versus the McCoys. Thomas Edison versus Nikola Telsa. DC versus Marvel. Dogs versus cats. … Well, maybe dog people versus cat people.
Great rivalries can inspire creative competition, breed history-making moments and teach those watching the rivalry play out a lot about themselves in the process. All too often, they also cause people to “pick a side” and declare themselves on one team or the other.
Take Netflix’s dueling docuseries “Dogs” and “Cat People,” for example: Launching on July 7, the second season of the former features four episodes dedicated to remarkable dogs (and their pet parents) from Butler University’s mascot Butler Blue to NASA astronaut Leland Melvin’s viral Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Meanwhile, also launching on July 7, the latter series debuts with six episodes focused on felines and their not-as-furry human companions, including rapper Moshow, Wakuneco artist Sachi and trainer Samantha Martin of the Amazing Acro-Cats. After streaming giant Netflix premiered its new docuseries “Dogs” in 2018, executive producer Glen Zipper recalls receiving a lot of love on social media from canine moms and dads — but he was also on the receiving end of irate tweets pressing for a companion show about cats. Three years later, as he prepares to launch the long-awaited second season of “Dogs” alongside the debut of new docuseries “Cat People,” Zipper hopes there will be balance and peace among pet parents.
“Our message [is], ‘Why can’t we love both?'” Zipper tells Variety.
Still, it was a long and often uneven road to get these series ready to stream. While the first season of “Dogs” was proof of concept for Zipper and executive producer Amy Berg, who wanted to lean into “happy” tales (no pun intended) about man’s (and woman’s) best friend, the outcry of interest in a show about...

Alex Winter, the “Bill and Ted’s” actor who is himself a noted director and producer, saw in Frank Zappa’s story an icon who embodied everything about music and culture in the 1970s. At the same time, he wanted to capture the man behind the myth. With the blessing of Zappa’s wife, Gail, he and producer Glen Zipper set out to uncover the story of the famous envelope-pusher, with access to the late legend’s infamous vault. Winter spent years restoring the archive material that stood in front of him, working to preserve the material that Zappa himself had collected before his 1993 death.
Winter talked to Variety about the genesis of “Zappa,” out Nov. 27, as well as the private life and politics of one of America’s most eccentric artists.

Starz said Monday that it has acquired rights to With Drawn Arms, the documentary about Olympian Tommie Smith who reflects on his iconic fist-thrust silent protest on the medal stand during the national anthem at the 1968 Summer Games. The cable network has set a premiere date for November 2 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, when it will also be available on the Starz app.
With the film, Smith had finally been ready to explain the meaning behind his silent protest, with a big world premiere planned for the Tribeca Film Festival in April, with a subsequent theatrical berth and ceremonies to take place surrounding the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. All those plans, and for that matter Tribeca and the Olympic Games, were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The new Young Adult book “Devastation Class” is not your average book-to-movie adaptation. When the film rights were snapped up in 2018 to adapt the science fiction book series by Glen Zipper and Elaine Mongeon, the project hadn’t yet found a publisher. A few months later, HarperCollins’ Blink YA Books secured the literary rights.
The book was released on Sept. 8. Centering on a small group of military cadets and students who must mutiny to take control of a starship to save themselves — and the world — from a force of invading aliens, Zipper and Mongeon took time writing the novel inspired by their love for sci-fi and ’80s films.
Below, they talk to Variety about their collaborative process, writing a modern story and writing action sequences for the big screen.

The Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 was one of America’s most visceral tragedies. In real time, millions of Americans, including school children across the country, witnessed the shuttle disintegrate from a solid rocket booster failure, claiming the lives of all seven astronauts on board. The mission was of particular national interest because a high school teacher named Christa McAulife was selected to become the first private citizen in space, leading to increased media attention and fanfare.
Countless shows, documentaries, and books have covered all angles of the NASA mission gone horribly awry. Netflix’s new documentary series, Challenger: The Final Flight, stands out by telling the human stories behind the accident, including first-hand accounts from the decision makers at NASA and the astronauts’ families whose lives were changed irrevocably on the morning of January 28, 1986.

If America’s modern space age began in the 1960s, it hit a wall in 1986 with the Challenger disaster, when the U.S. space shuttle by that name exploded during takeoff, killing all seven crew members aboard. The element that took this from sorrowful and tragic error to generation-defining news event was the presence onboard of Christa McAuliffe, a civilian schoolteacher specifically chosen for the mission in order to catalyze student interest in America’s quest for the stars. Those students drawn to watching the launch by the promise of a relatable figure to take them along were confronted with live-television tragedy when O-ring seals failed in unusually cold weather; space exploration may have continued, but some innocence or optimism was lost.
The case made by “Challenger: The Final Flight,” a new four-episode documentary series on Netflix produced by J.J. Abrams and Glen Zipper, is that this didn’t need to happen.
