David Adjmi did not intend to re-enter the world of theater.
With a handful of credits under his belt, Adjmi had sworn off playwriting after a high-stakes collaboration fell apart. Then, as he sought to fulfill one last playwriting grant obligation, he landed on the idea of Stereophonic, which was nominated for 13 Tony Awards this season, becoming the most nominated play in history.
The process of creating the play, about a fictional band trying to record a hit album in the 1970s, has both challenged and rewarded the collaborators, including Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, who wrote songs for the band, and the actors, who were called upon to perform those songs in the play, even though most of them were not musicians before joining the cast. And for Adjmi, the play morphed into a deeply personal look at his career.

In a Broadway season bursting at the seams with new musicals, plays and revivals – 36 productions opened during the 2023-2024 eligibility window – it is not a surprise that the 60 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre aficionados off guard with some of their choices.
The biggest surprise of the morning was the overperformance of new musical “Water for Elephants.” Our users only expected it to earn one nomination, but it ultimately ended up with seven, tying “Merrily We Roll Along” and beating out musicals such as “Suffs.” Its unexpected bids include the top category of Best Musical, director Jessica Stone, book and choreography. The one bid we thought it would land for featured actor Paul Alexander Nolan didn’t actually come to fruition. Speaking of surprise director noms, Michael Greif – who worked on three musicals this season – broke through for “Hell’s Kitchen.” He ranked ninth in our combined odds.

Roundabout Theatre Company reunites writer Joshua Harmon and director Daniel Aukin the team behind Bad Jews and Admissions for Skintight, a scorching examination of beauty, youth and sex. Reeling from her ex-husband's engagement to a much younger woman, Jodi Isaac Menzel turns to her famous fashion-designer dad for support. Instead, she finds him wrapped up in his West Village townhouse with Trey. Who's 20. And not necessarily gay. But probably an adult film star. At least, according to Jodi's son. Who's also 20. And definitely gay. Skintight assays the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what's on the inside.

The drug-addict mother, the fictional son, the defective airplane parts: Secrets are at the core of many great American plays. Sometimes they are secrets kept by one character from the others, or from the outer world; the drama is in the revelation of what the audience already knows. Other times, though, the audience is the dupe, the playwright springing his secret like a sex toy to juice up the proceedings. (I’m looking at you, Neil Labute.) One of the mysterious achievements of Sam Shepard’s 1983 play Fool for Love, only now having its Broadway debut, is the way it combines these two seemingly incompatible modes of withholding in a story whose point is the huge damage caused by a lack of information. When the withholding and revelation are handled as adroitly as they are in Daniel Aukin’s terrific staging for the Manhattan Theatre Club, Fool for Love acquires...

Sam Shepard‘s “Fool for Love,” a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, poses a question that most of us never ask: What’s the difference between a man and a guy? Under Daniel Aukin’s very lopsided direction, the answer to that question doesn’t matter because you won’t be looking at the man Eddie (Sam Rockwell) or the guy Martin (Tom Pelphrey) or even the Old Man (Gordon Joseph Weiss) in the new Broadway revival of “Fool for Love,” which opened Thursday at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. You’ll be looking at Nina Arianda, who...

Playing ex-lovers and semi-siblings in the emotional shootout of a lifetime, Sam Rockwell and Nina Arianda will reprise their summer vacation performances in Sam Shepard’s intense, intimate 1983 play on Broadway beginning next September. The show was widely viewed as a likely New York transfer, and the move signifies not only the draw of star-power (and a great work) but of good old-fashioned connections.
This revival was mounted last July at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where it earned considerable praise (though not from everyone). In New York, it will run at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, the Broadway flagship of the nonprofit Manhattan Theatre Club. Williamstown’s new artistic director, Mandy Greenfield, recently took over the esteemed Berkshires venue after a 10-year run at Mtc, most recently as artistic producer, i.e. number two to a.d Lynne Meadow. Greenfield is one of the most admired and well-liked producers in the nonprofit world.
