Dueling groups of protesters clashed overnight at the University of California, Los Angeles, shoving, kicking and beating each other with sticks after pro-Israel demonstrators tried to pull down barricades surrounding a pro-Palestinian encampment. Hours earlier, police burst into a building occupied by anti-war protesters at Columbia University, breaking up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school.
After a couple of hours of scuffles between demonstrators at UCLA, police wearing helmets and face shields slowly separated the groups and quelled the violence. The scene was calm as day broke.
UCLA canceled classes Wednesday and urged people to avoid the area where the fighting broke out. The school’s library won’t reopen until Monday and Royce Hall, which authorities said was vandalized, is closed through Friday. UCLA stationed law enforcement officers throughout campus.

Weeks after the Sundance Film Festival announced that is was opening up exploratory conversations about leaving its longtime home of Park City, the Slamdance Film Festival has announced that its 2025 fest will not be taking place in the Utah resort town.
Next year’s Slamdance — the more indie cousin of Sundance — will take place in Los Angeles, from Feb. 20 to 26. “The festival aims to be financially accessible,” said today’s announcement, addressing an oft cited concern that the festival’s Park City location has too high of a price point for the indie filmmaking community.
The fest will take place in venues in and surrounding Hollywood, including the Landmark Theatres and the DGA Theater Complex, with in-person passes starting at $50.00 and many programs free to the public. Panasonic Lumix will be the official sponsor of the 2025 fest; additional industry partners include the DGA, Landmark Theatres, and Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo.

Looks like it’s not just Sundance that could be on the move. The Slamdance Film Festival, the smaller, independent stepsister festival to Sundance, has announced it will be leaving its long-time home of Park City, Utah and will relocate to Los Angeles beginning in 2025.
Next year’s Slamdance, which enters its 30th year after being founded in 1995, will take place in Los Angeles’ West Hollywood neighborhood at the Landmark Theatres Sunset and the DGA Theater Complex. The festival also traditionally runs in late January, generally around the same time as Sundance, but will now be scheduled for February 20-26, 2025.
Slamdance believes being in LA will offer the festival to continue to grow, and it shouldn’t hurt to be out of Sundance’s shadow.

It’s the 30-story elephant on the Los Angeles skyline — and seemingly no one, including Mayor Karen Bass, has decided what to do about it. The Oceanwide Plaza luxury development has stood next to Crypto.com Arena vacant and half-finished since 2019, when its Chinese developer, having already spent $1.1 billion on it, ran out of money.
In December, three L.A. taggers — Akua, Sour and Castle — broke into the highest of Oceanwide’s three towers and spray-painted their names across its floor-to-ceiling windows. The daring stunt served as a bat signal to the rest of L.A.’s graffiti community, including prolific tagger Endem, who dreamed of seeing his own name in 13-foot-tall block letters adorning the building.
“A lot of people were actually hitting me up on Instagram,” says Endem. “Like, ‘What’s up with that building?’ It was the talk of the town within the community, but no one had the balls to hit it.

Hollywood Democrats again might be facing conflicting loyalties and affinities, this time the race to fill the seat occupied for more than 30 years by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
With the March 5 open primary just weeks away, for many Hollywood politicos, the race is just starting to become a big topic of conversation.
Starting with Monday night’s first debate — sponsored by USC Dornsife, Fox 11 and Politico — that will see Democratic Reps. The Super Bowl is returning to Los Angeles.
The NFL says that Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium will host the 2027 Super Bowl, a move that will make L.A. the center of the sports universe for the second half of the 2020s.
The 2027 Super Bowl will be broadcast by ABC and ESPN, the first time the Disney-owned channels host the biggest game on the NFL calendar, and the most-watched TV event of the year. SoFi Stadium hosted its first Super Bowl in 2022, with the hometown Los Angeles Rams defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.
SoFi’s next Super Bowl also means that Los Angeles will host arguably the three biggest sporting events in the world in back to back to back years. In 2026, Los Angeles will be one of the cities hosting the FIFA World Cup (it isn’t clear if it will be SoFi Stadium or another venue in the area); in...

After a weekend of schmoozing with the Hollywood elite, Joe Biden departed Los Angeles on Sunday with his re-election campaign more than $15 million flusher.
The boffo fundraising figure for the weekend was confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by a source close to Jeffrey Katzenberg, the DreamWorks and Quibi co-founder and Biden campaign co-chair. The haul would be a record for a president or presidential candidate on a single fundraising trip to Los Angeles, and tops the $15 million Barack Obama raised in 2012 at a reception held at George and Amal Clooney’s house.
The president and First Lady Jill Biden began their whirlwind 36-hour tour of Los Angeles after landing on the West Coast on Friday, eventually hitting six private fundraising events and also finding time to attend the shiva of TV icon Norman Lear, who died Tuesday at age 101.
The couple kicked off a weekend of fundraising activity by speaking at a Holmby Hills event.

President Joe Biden kicked off a weekend of fundraising activity in Los Angeles Friday night, speaking at an event, which also featured Steven Spielberg and Shonda Rhimes.
As the first Hollywood-centric fundraiser of his reelection campaign, Biden used his time on the stage to call out Donald Trump and explain why he poses the “greatest threat” to democracy.
“This is an incredibly successful night,” the president said at the beginning of his speech, according to the Associated Press, before joking that he didn’t want to talk long because he was “the only thing standing between you and Lenny Kravitz.”
The Grammy-winning singer performed at the event hosted by celebrity interior designer Michael Smith and his partner, James Costos. The latter of whom said earlier that supporters from across the country came to attend the fundraiser: “This is not just a Hollywood gathering, it’s more like a national event.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Jerrid Powell in the murder of three homeless men in the last week of November.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Powell had received a $700,000 settlement from the city of Santa Monica for an incident where the beach patrol ran over him.
Powell is accused of hunting homeless people and shooting them out in the open while they slept.
Beverly Hills police arrested Powell on the night of November 29 after his car was linked to the murder of Nicholas Simbolon. He allegedly robbed Simbolon at his home and shot him in what authorities have labeled a “follow-home robbery.”
Robert Luna, the Los Angeles County Sherriff, stated that a 2024 BMW owned by the murder suspect was found at the scene of Simbolon’s murder. Beverly Hills police discovered the car and, after a traffic stop, arrested him.
Investigators connected the car to the killings.

Update, Sunday, Nov. 19: The 10 Freeway will open Sunday night, earlier than previously expected.
“This thing opens tonight and will be fully operational tomorrow,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a Sunday morning news conference. He was joined on the deck of the freeway by Mayor Karen Bass, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.). “This is a significant and big day.”
The mile-long section of freeway between Alameda Street and Santa Fe Avenue has been closed for more than a week, jamming traffic on other roadways with the 300,000 cars that typically use the 10.

Despite major investments in housing and intervention programs and Mayor Karen Bass making the issue a centerpiece of her administration, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the Los Angeles area continues to skyrocket, with results of the most recent count released today showing a 9% year-over-year increase in homelessness in the county, and a 10% jump in the city.
According to the results of the point-in-time count conducted in January, there were 75,518 people experiencing homelessness in the county, and 46,260 in the city of Los Angeles.
That’s up from 69,144 in the county last year, and 41,980 in the city.
For a longer-term comparison, the 2019 count of those in shelters or on the street in the county was 56,000. That means, in the past four years, the homeless population has risen an eye-popping 35%.

As soon as the Writers Guild announced its strike on May 2 over a failure to agree on a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. For his part, Newsom noted that “when called in by both sides we’ll intervene, to the extent both sides are willing and interested in that,” adding that the strike “has profound consequences direct and indirect.” (A week later, President Biden also weighed in, noting that he hoped “the writers are given...

Hollywood political stalwart Jeffrey Katzenberg had some choice words to say about billionaire developer Rick Caruso and his 2022 mayoral campaign recently, accusing the former LA mayoral candidate of exploiting the homeless problem by giving tours of “Skid Row” to embarrass city officials.
Caruso, who lost to Karen Bass in the LA mayor election last November, started giving tours of the downtown homeless camps during his campaign to highlight the city’s growing problem while presenting his strategy to solve it.
Katzenberg, a political uber-donor, told Vanity Fair that Caruso should have put his money where his mouth is.

President Joe Biden and his administration are being advised to “own his age” by one of Hollywood’s most politically involved moguls: DreamWorks and Quibi co-founder, Jeffrey Katzenberg.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the former Walt Disney Studios chairman has become “an influential outside adviser” to the White House and has given President Biden advice on how to counter his public image as being too old to be reelected in 2024. This past April, Katzenberg was named one of seven co-chairs for Biden’s re-election campaign.
Along with other advisers, Katzenberg has told the 80-year-old president to “own his age” and to turn a perceived negative into a positive. As examples, he pointed to two celebrities who are Biden’s age: Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who is still performing with the band after 60 years together, and Harrison Ford, who is expected to be in Emmy contention and whose final...

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass took no sides in her first statement since the start of the Writers Guild of America strike, instead focusing on a resolution.
In a statement, Bass said, “Los Angeles relies on a strong entertainment industry that is the envy of the world while putting Angelenos to work in good, middle class jobs. I encourage all sides to come together around an agreement that protects our signature industry and the families it supports.”
Bass has been a strong supporter of labor, but she also campaigned on her role in politics as a consensus builder. She helped mediate an end to the Lausd teachers strike earlier this year. When she was in Congress, Bass’ district included the studio and industry employee heavy Culver City area.
The strike does present an early challenge for her tenure, as a protracted work stoppage has the potential for a devastating impact to the region’s economy.

Mayor Karen Bass rescinded former Mayor Eric Garcetti’s final executive directive that would have created a program to illuminate the Hollywood sign, a representative for Bass confirmed today.
The Los Angeles Times first reported that Bass shut down the directive on Wednesday, citing a memo she wrote to city department leaders stating that there would be no replacement order.
Garcetti signed the directive on Dec. 11, his final day in office. The City Charter notes that executive directives take effect 15 days after publication, and “shall be binding on all departments, commissions, appointed officers and employees of the city” unless it is “revised or rescinded by the mayor.”
Zach Seidl of Bass’ office confirmed to City News Service that Bass rescinded the order “because there were concerns about the legality of the order.”

Karen Bass took the oath of office as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, making history as the city’s first female mayor and the first Black woman to hold L.A.’s top job.
Bass’ inaugural speech focused on her vow to tackle the homelessness and crime that has spread across the city since the pandemic. She committed to making her first act as mayor to be a visit to the city’s emergency operations center to formally declare a state of emergency regarding homelessness.
Bass, a veteran legislator who served in the state assembly and spent the past 12 years representing L.A. in Congress, assured supporters that she will use all of her connections to lead the charge to develop a coordinated strategy to address the estimated 40,000 people sleeping on the streets of Los Angeles every night, with even more across the sprawling L.A. County.

In an electoral contest that divided Hollywood celebrities down the middle, six-term Democrat Congresswoman Karen Bass has been elected the 43rd Mayor of Los Angeles, ‘Variety’ reports quoting Associated Press projections.
Real estate developer and fellow Democrat Rick Caruso, who was supported by Katie Perry, ‘Avengers’ star Chris Pratt and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, called Bass to concede the race on Wednesday evening (U.S. Pacific Time).
Bass, the first woman to be elected to the office, had garnered support from a large swath of Hollywood, including Ari Emanuel, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Steven Spielberg, J J Abrams and Jeffrey Katzenberg – the former Fox Studios boss and co-founder of DreamWorks Animation had put 1.85 million into a committee to support the mayor-elect’s candidacy.
“The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message. It is time for change and it is time for urgency,” Bass said in a statement.

On Tuesday Donald Trump followed his almost-total losing record in the 2022 midterms — he endorsed a slate of extremist right wing republicans, all of them election deniers and many of them openly racist, almost all of whom lost — by announcing he’ll be running for president in 2024.
And on Wednesday, Jimmy Kimmel took a closer look at Trump’s speech, noting among other things that Trump looks pretty old and tired. “He seemed kind of out of it,” Kimmel said.
Kimmel also took a look at some of the extremist positions Trump took, as well as the lies and conspiracy theories he told during his speech.

Updated, 4:15 Pm: Rep. Karen Bass has defeated developer Rick Caruso in the race for Los Angeles Mayor, becoming the first woman to lead the city. With 70 of the vote tallied, the latest update from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County shows Bass with an insurmountable lead of more than 46,500 votes over Caruso.
Caruso had led the race after Election Day, but was surpassed by Bass last Friday. Since then, Bass has led consistently in each of the last six updates.
Caruso called Bass to concede this evening.
In a statement, Bass said, “The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message: it is time for change and it is time for urgency.
“I ran for mayor to urgently confront the crises our hometown faces. Tonight, 40,000 Angelenos will sleep without a home — and 5 will not wake up. Crime is increasing and families are being priced out of their neighborhoods.
Caruso had led the race after Election Day, but was surpassed by Bass last Friday. Since then, Bass has led consistently in each of the last six updates.
Caruso called Bass to concede this evening.

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass defeated developer Rick Caruso Wednesday to become the next mayor of Los Angeles, as voters elevated the first Black woman to hold the post as City Hall contends with multiple scandals that have shaken trust in government, an out-of-control homeless crisis and rising crime rates.
With 70 of the vote tallied, Bass had amassed an insurmountable lead of nearly 47,000 votes.
Bass — a Democrat who was on President-elect Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president — overcame more than 100 million in spending by the billionaire Caruso’s campaign while arguing that she would be a coalition builder who could heal a troubled city of nearly 4 million.
The election tested whether voters in the heavily Democratic city were willing to turn away from their liberal tendencies and embrace an approach that would place a strong emphasis on public safety.

On Tuesday, Kerry Washington joined Vice President Kamala Harris and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rep. Karen Bass for a meet-and-greet at a breakfast spot on Pico Boulevard, encouraging maximum civic participation on Election Day. But just before this, the actress and activist completed a three-day, four-state trip that she has termed the “S.O.S. Tour,” where she hosted rallies and discussions, filmed TikToks and took photographs, and visited local radio outlets to raise awareness about the power of the vote.
Though Washington has been a surrogate for candidates for years, this election season she wanted to focus her efforts on showing up in battleground states for the midterm elections to raise awareness about the importance of secretary of state races (hence the “S.O.S.”) and the impact of local elections, as opposed to parachuting in every four years during the presidential voting cycle.

The actor and presenter Jameela Jamil hit out at the “rich, white celebrities” who opted to vote for billionaire former Republican Rick Caruso for mayor of Los Angeles.
Mr Caruso, a real estate tycoon who promised to “clean up” the city with a controversial plan to force people experiencing homelessness into massive shelters, currently has a narrow lead over Rep Karen Bass with under the half the vote counted.
Given that later-arriving ballots in Los Angeles tend to favour progressive candidates, Ms Bass may well prevail. But the race exposed major faultlines in LA politics, splitting the loyalities of the city’s celebrities. British-born Jamil, in an Election Day post on Instagram, did not hold back.
“The man became a Democrat This year after being a life long Republican,” Jamil wrote of Mr Caruso. “He ran as an independent when he entered public politics for a while and just switched.

The focus in the US midterm elections may rightly be on the races for the Senate and House of Representatives, but it is also the time for a host of local elections, of which none is more hotly debated in Hollywood than the Los Angeles mayoral poll.
Necessitated by the departure of Eric Garcetti, who’s US President Joe Biden’s nominee for Ambassador to India and is still awaiting Senate confirmation, the mayoral contest sees six-term US Congresswoman and Democrat Karen Bass pitted against real estate billionaire, and Republican-turned-Democrat, Rick Caruso.
Caruso, who enjoys a slight edge in a dead-heat race dominated by the city’s problem of homelessness and eyebrows raised by his 100 million campaign machine, was given a big shout out by pop star Katy Perry, a loyal Democrat who had performed for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
