Christopher Nolan came out firing on Monday evening against Warner Bros’ decision to release all of its theatrical films scheduled for 2021 on HBO Max on the same day they’re slated to hit theaters. But given the current situation in the United States — the Covid-19 pandemic is currently at its peak here, and could continue to get worse before the vaccine is available — a lot of folks aren’t too concerned about the sanctity of the theatrical moviegoing experience right now.
“In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences,” Nolan said in a statement railing against the move by Warner BRos and HBO Max.

Digital media outfit Bustle Digital Group (Bdg) has shuttered one its properties, The Outline -- a news website dedicate to covering power, culture, and the technology, which was founded by veteran tech journalist Joshua Topolsky in 2015. Bdg acquired The Outline last March for an undisclosed sum.
Variety reports that Bdg also laid off the entire Outline staff amid corporate complications stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, with executive editor Leah Finnegan sharing the news on Twitter. “I am tremendously proud of all the weird, funny, interesting, and brilliant stuff we put into the universe, and all the talented writers we were able to publish,” she wrote. “Thank you for reading, and I hope you will remember what we did fondly.”

Univision Communications reached a deal to sell Gizmodo Media Group and The Onion to private-equity firm Great Hill Partners for an undisclosed amount.
With the sale, Great Hill will form a new company called G/O Media Inc., headed by digital content industry vet Jim Spanfeller, who also will be a “significant investor” in the company. The sale puts an end to Univision’s bid — under then-ceo Randy Falco — to diversify beyond its Hispanic broadcasting core business into what it had hoped would be a fast-growing, young-skewing mass digital play.
Terms of the all-cash deal weren’t disclosed. According to person familiar with the deal, Great Hill is paying considerably less than the $135 million that Univision paid in August 2016 for the Gawker assets in a bankruptcy auction, (which didn’t include Gawker.com). Univision acquired a 40% stake in The Onion in January 2017.

Vox writer David Roberts asked his Twitter followers whether white people “have a positive or negative effect on America” in a poll on Tuesday.
Do white people have a positive or negative effect on America?
– David Roberts (@drvox) July 24, 2018
Roberts, who writes about energy and climate change for the site, said he decided to delve into the issue of the effects of “white people” after seeing a Public Religion Research Institute poll that asked Americans their thoughts about “racial diversity.”

The results of the poll showed that more than 6 out of 10 Americans had a positive view, with the trend propelled by large majorities among Democrats. Among Republicans, 50 percent of respondents had a negative view, while just 43 percent held a positive view.

Joshua Topolsky, co-founder of Vox Media’s The Verge, ripped Daily Wire founder/editor in chief Ben Shapiro, saying the conservative publisher — who is Jewish — was similar to Nazi collaborators during the Holocaust.
“Ben Shapiro is the Jew who helps other Jews onto the train,” tweeted Topolsky, a veteran of Bloomberg Media who is currently editor in chief of his latest media venture, The Outline.
Topolsky quickly deleted the tweet and made it clear to his critics that he wasn’t doing it because he was sorry, but rather because he was annoyed at right-wing haters.

Updated, 12:05 p.m. Et Bloomberg says Topolsky’s departure was amicable between he and the company. Statements below: Joshua Topolsky, Editor, Bloomberg Digital “The last year at Bloomberg has been an incredible experience for me. Alongside a brilliant team, I had a chance to rebuild and reinvent what Bloomberg Media was and could be. We built something for the future that I am absurdly proud of. It’s bittersweet to admit, but my appetite for change is even larger than I expected it to be when I arrived at the company. After many discussions with Justin and John, it...

Journalists move from publication to publication all the time, but it's news when an “online guy” moves to a more “traditional” company instead of the other way around. Joshua Topolsky, co-founder of the Vox Media tech site The Verge, joining Bloomberg is one such case. Also read: Bloomberg Hires ‘Game Change’ Team Mark Halperin, John Heilemann to Lead Political Coverage Topolsky, who was at the AOL tech site Engadget before starting The Verge with many of his former colleagues, will be reporting to Bloomberg Businesweek editor Josh Tyrangiel and Justin Smith, chief executive of the company's multimedia group, TheWrap has confirmed.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is teaming up with Joshua Topolsky's The Verge for a 10-part web series that tells the stories behind the early days of New York-based tech startups. The launch of the show continues an expansion by the tech-oriented site, launched in fall 2011 by staffers who left AOL's Engadget, into becoming a destination for original, TV-quality online video. The series, Small Empires With Alexis Ohanian, will soon begin production with a July 29 debut planned for the first episode. Ohanian described the show in elevator pitch-style as "Inside the Actor’s Studio meets Dirty

New MacBook Airs
We've wondered when the MacBook Air was going to get some attention with new CPUs and Thunderbolt, and now it seems they're pegged for a "late June" arrival. 380,000 units will be shipped this month, with production ramping up slightly after that. The same source for this rumor also suggests that an iPad 3 with screen resolution six times higher than current models is in the works--but it's plausible these stats could relate instead to a misunderstanding about possible higher-resolution displays for the next iPad which we've covered before.
New Mac Mini Servers, Mac Pros
Reports are that the supplies of Mac Mini Servers and Mac Pros are getting very tight in stores, and there's no imminent re-stock due. This is typical before an entire Apple line gets refreshed, but we're in the dark as to what may be en route. Earlier rumors had hinted at a smaller, possibly rack-mountable Mac Pro,...

I haven't been feeling well today, which meant I spent most of the morning and afternoon having the kind of strange dreams that I remember for about five minutes and then forget completely except for random bits that end up in conversation somehow and make me look crazy. I don't remember my normal dreams at all, generally, but sick dreams/fever dreams stick with me for long periods of time making me concerned about my mental state. I'll keep myself from mentioning details, but one seemed to center around a parking garage. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "American Idol" on Fox
"America's Next Top Model" on The CW. 16th season premiere.
"The Middle" on ABC
"Minute to Win It" on NBC
"Nova: Sciencenow" on PBS
"Survivor" on CBS
8:30pm: "Better With You" on ABC
"Throwdown with Bobby Flay" on Food Network
9:00pm: "Criminal Minds" on CBS
"Ghost Hunters" on SyFy.

It's been one of those weeks where I just feel like I can't wake all the way up and have been stumbling from activity to activity trying to maintain the interest necessary to be engaged in what I'm doing. This level of disconnect with most of the world around me is probably why it's only now hitting me that today is the last day of September and I really wasn't prepared for that. I mean, Halloween is only a month away now, I actually have to start working on plans for Thanksgiving, and I can't use the "I'm sorry, I'm still adjusting to a new schedule" excuse anymore for why I'm so goddamned tired this week. More importantly though, there's only a month left to go in the Cannonball Read, so if you came here to bitch about television, I'd invite you to either pick up a book or get...

Hump Day! I'm indescribably happy that the week is over halfway done now, since I'm that much closer to not having to spend my days around adolescents anymore. (Actual dialogue from today: "Stop Hitting Each Other!" "We're not!" "I Don't Believe You." and "Get away from the counselor's lunch table. We get a break during lunch time too." I'm such a nice person.) I'm sure they'll turn into lovely people one day, but right about now they're just migraine inducing. In less self absorbed news, here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00 p.m.: "PBS Special: America's Orchestra: Celebrating 125 Years of the Boston Pops" on PBS.
"So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox.
"Tyler Perry's House of Payne" on TBS. I know y'all don't like me mentioning this, but if I'm suffering this week so will all of you for whom the mere mention of Mr. Perry causes inexplicable levels of rage.

The only thing more appealing today than paying extra money to see the crappy 3D conversion of Clash of the Titans? Spending over $500 on a brand, spanking new iPad that will be rendered obsolete in six months when the second generation comes out! That said, the chances are good that at least some of you are probably reading this on an iPad right this second. And for those of you still in the nether region of indecision, last night's episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon might push you to join them. Fallon spoke with Engadget editor Joshua Topolsky about Apple's newest gotta have it device and it looks awesome (or at least more awesome than when Stephen Colbert was cutting up vegetables with his). After the jump, watch as Topolsky does his best Steve Jobs impersonation and learn how you can even use the iPad to find bootleg YouTube...
