Top 10 lists are great. Even when you disagree with the picks, there’s something about a Top 10 list of films that just begs to be debated. But you know what’s better than a thousand words written by someone explaining why these films are the best of the year? A music video!
The Playlist contributor Oktay Ege Kozak has compiled his best of 2019 into a four-minute video that includes some of the best scenes from each film edited together with “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” as performed by Taron Egerton in “Rocketman.” It’s a well-made video that concisely presents the top 20 of 2019 in a way that shows the artistry and, no matter what you think of the choices themselves, the scenes chosen are worthy of showcasing.

One of the upsides of living through turbulent sociopolitical times is that popular art becomes bolder, more subversive, more versatile, and more creative as things in the real world get worse. It’s the end of the world as we know it, but at least we’ll meet it with some great movies. The bitter conflicts, divide, and confusion the Us and in many cases the rest of the world went through during the late ‘60s and most of the ‘70s resulted in some of the best and most enduring work in film history.

As far as our sociopolitical environment is concerned, 2017 has been a dumpster fire inside a locked building full of orphans. But as we have witnessed with the tumultuous period of the 1970s, such times usually result in daring, transgressive, and sometimes even revolutionary artistic work. Therefore, it makes sense for this year to provide some of the most original and exhilarating films to be released from all demographics of genre, budget, studio, etc… Overall, 2017 feels like a major turning point in how filmmakers and studios approach their craft, and how audiences consume it.

On our latest episode, Over/Under Movies takes a look at two films that, while directly connected, take wildly different paths to tell stories about road tripping across America and finding yourself in the process. My co-host Oktay Ege Kozak made the picks here, and he decided on “Easy Rider” for the overrated and “Lost In America” for the under.
Dennis Hopper‘s seminal 1969 film, about two bike riding hippies (Hopper and Peter Fonda) who pull off a drug deal and decide to cruise across the country to find spiritual truth, is understandably iconic.

Read More: SXSW Review: 'Evil Dead' Is A Grim, Humorless Ultraviolent Update Of A Horror Classic Believe it or not, I think Fede Alvarez's remake from 2013 is a little better than Sam Raimi's original. Both films tell the well-worn story about a group of young folks going to a cabin in the woods and who unwittingly and foolishly unleash a demonic spirit that takes them apart one by one, sometimes in hilarious fashion. I'm joined by my co-hosts Ryan Oliver and Oktay Ege Kozak, who don't necessarily agree with my brazen dismissal of such a beloved '80s horror film.
