From the very opening, we are warned that this is a film of doubling and illusion. A car slowly pulls up and to a stop in a nighttime Lima street, but we gradually realise that we are observing the scene through a large window, with the street and headlamps subtly reflecting and shifting in the pulled focus. It turns out that this sequence – man with gun stealthily enters house – forms the final chapter of Edo Celeste’s latest in a long line of successful detective novels, and he is composing it as we watch, before deleting it in disgust at his reliance on cliche – a black cat. It also turns out that later on Edo himself will repeat the exact same actions, via the same shots, trying to find the woman who can help him find the mysterious man who has posed for a photographic project depicting his works’ hero,...

The 2014 Toronto Film Festival lineup got a lot stronger this morning by adding several new titles to the Special Presentations, Masters, Documentaries, Vanguard and Contemporary World Cinema selection as well as announcing the Mavericks and Discovery Programme picks. Most notable selections begin with Special Presentations additions of The Weinstein's St. Vincent starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarty and James Franco's The Sound and the Fury. The St. Vincent screening will be a world premiere and suggest Murray will be walking the Tiff red carpet... now that's a get for the fest I'm sure brings a smile to their face. In the Masters selection we have Studio Ghibli's The Tale of Princess Kaguya as well as the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winner, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Winter Sleep. The Vanguard selection has added The Voice, the lastest film from Persepolis helmer Marjane Satrapi and in the Mavericks selection...

Fourteen films have been competing in iber.film.america, the first-ever Latin American film festival online, organized by VoD platform filmotech.com. “The aim is to bring Hispanic cinema closer to Latin American communities from both continents, America and Europe, through new distribution channels,” said festival and platform director Juan Alía. “Internet is the ideal venue for the general public to have access to these types of films, that are of great quality but have not been released either in cinemas or as DVDs.” Until April 16, the platform’s Latin American visitors will be able to see the films for free, with up to 10,000 viewings possible for each film. The selected films, produced in Latin American countries between 2009 and 2011, will vie for the Critics Award, decided on by a jury made up of five journalists and with a prize of $3,000, and for the Audience Award. Fifteen countries, from Argentina to Mexico via Spain, Nicaragua, and Colombia, are represented in a selection that includes:

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has announced its nominees for the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. It unraveled on Thursday, January 20 that Emma Stone-starring teen comedy movie "Easy A" and Lea Michele-led musical comedy series "Glee" are among those getting a nomination.
"Easy A" will compete for Outstanding Film in the Wide Release category. This Will Gluck-directed film is up against Lisa Cholodenko's lesbian family drama "The Kids Are All Right", Steven Antin's musical "Burlesque", Daniel Alfredson's crime thriller "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and Edgar Wright's video-game-inspired "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".
The Limited Release category, in the meantime, pits prison romance "I Love You Phillip Morris" against "Howl", the much talked-about movie about the life and works of 20th century American poet, Allen Ginsberg. They are also listed along with Peter Bratt's "La Mission", Ella Lemhagen's "Patrik,...

While I do not think that something as edgy or unusual as Giorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth (pictured above) will make the 'final five' short list, but kudos to Greece for throwing it out there. Perhaps something like Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions will make the cut despite its similarly unsettling subject matter. Either way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did put out a big release yesterday with all of their Foreign Language film submissions, 65 of them in total even Greenland, from various countries. Many of these films have reviews in our archives.

The first feature from Peruvian writer and director Javier Fuentes-Leon, and winner of numerous international audience awards, the bittersweet mystical love story Undertow, is brave, heart-breaking and thoroughly real.
Fisherman Miguel lives a complex life caught-up by denial and confused identity. Happily married to pregnant Mariela, he is also having a secret affair with visiting artist, Santiago. Distrusted by the close-knit Catholic community he's entered because of his quiet, reflective nature and constant snapping, Santiago has eggs daily thrown at his window and is ignored by many. Devout churchgoer, Miguel on the other hand, has a firm place in the community.
Refusing to join Santiago on a trip, Miguel continues to deceive the community and his clueless wife by secretly meeting Santiago until he suddenly drowns. With his body missing, Santiago's spirit is trapped and only Miguel can...

Director: Javier Fuentes-León Writer: Javier Fuentes-León Starring: Tatiana Astengo, Manolo Cardona, Cristian Mercado Miguel (Cristian Mercado) is a fisherman whose life with his very pregnant wife, Mariela (Tatiana Astengo), seems pretty darn perfect; but there are emotional undertows tugging Miguel down into trouble. The name of that trouble is Santiago (Manolo Cardona), a traveling artist and outsider to this tranquil Peruvian seaside village. Santiago is comfortable with his sexuality and would prefer to be ostracized by society rather than hide from it. Miguel is quite closeted and is tied by local traditions (as we first witness during the burial ceremony for his cousin) and morals. Nonetheless, Miguel and Santiago share a series of clandestine rendezvous, getting busy on breathtaking beaches in between lovers’ quarrels over Miguel's insistence that their relationship remain a deep dark secret. Santiago dies unexpectedly and his spirit is trapped on Earth until his body can be...

Every few years, a “small” movie in an unusual setting comes along that is such a charming crowd-pleaser that it sweeps through the whole world like a breath of fresh air. Movies like The Full Monty, Muriel’s Wedding, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Billy Elliot became classics precisely because they were “different” – heartfelt stories about people in complicated circumstances, set in places we hadn’t ever seen before.
And, of course, Hollywood learns nothing from the success of these movies, continuing to churn out soulless, over-produced tripe usually starring an unnaturally skinny Jennifer Aniston.
But I digress.
This year’s charming crowd-pleaser is gay, and if there’s any justice at all in the world, this delightful film will repeat the crossover success of previous gay crowd-pleasers like Priscilla and Beautiful Thing and find a life far,...

This is the jury that I served on along with Lou Harry A&E editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal and actor Brian O’Halloran who you’ll remember from Clerks. It's interesting to watch so many debut features back to back because patterns do emerge in regards to strengths and weaknesses within first efforts. The jury discussions were yet another reminder – as if I needed one covering the Oscars so closely each year – that one man’s treasure is another man’s… anyway, the discussions were lively and fun but so much disagreement! Winners of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival were announced recently, with Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's Restrepo taking home the Grand Jury Prize in the documentary category, and Debra Granik's Winter's Bone winning the Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic category. You may remember Granik, the independent filmmaker who burst onto the Sundance scene in 2004, claiming the Dramatic Directing award for her first feature-length film, Down to the Bone. Despite its phenomenal reputation, Granik's big screen debut grossed a meager $30,000. Let's hope Winter's Bone turns out to be an anomaly in the director's rather minuscule line of work. A comprehensive list of all the winners this year can be seen after the jump. Grand Jury Prize, Dramatic: Winter’s Bone, directed by Debra Granik Grand Jury Prize, Documentary: Restrepo, directed by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington World Cinema Jury Prize, Dramatic: Animal Kingdom, written and directed by David Michôd.

The 2010 Sundance Awards were also announced last night, which will give you some keen insight to a lot of movies you've never heard of and likely never will. In fact, I've made it to Sundance twice now, and on both occasions, I watched something like 20 films -- usually the ones with the biggest buzz -- only to see the list of award winners and say, "What? I've never even heard of this movie." And, indeed, despite following Sundance fairly close this year, I'm reading many of the titles below for the first time.
In other words, the Sundance Grand Jury winners mean almost nothing, though the audience award winners often are the ones that you'll be hearing about over the next few months or so. For evidence of that, just check out the 2008 Award winners, which has only a few titles you may recognize (Frozen River, Wackness, Man on Wire...

Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" was the big winner in Park City Saturday night, as it won both the dramatic competition grand jury prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Earlier in the day, the gritty drama secured North American distribution through Roadside Attractions for release later this year.
The film, about an unflinching Ozark Mountain girl trudging through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her missing father, was adapted from the Daniel Woodrell novel by Granik and Anne Rosellini. Granik's previous film, the 2004 Sundance entry "Down to the Bone," won her a dramatic directing award.
The rest of the awards were fairly well spread around at the Saturday night ceremony hosted by David Hyde Pierce, who starred in the Park City at Midnight entry "The Perfect Host" this year.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,...

Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.
As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling,...

Although the Sundance Film Festival might have tried to wring some extra sunshine from its selections last year, the 2010 lineup looks to be back to its typical mirthless self. One could say it has gone from "You gotta give 'em hope" to "You gotta give 'em mope."
"That's our filmmakers," festival director John Cooper said with an amused mix of pride and resignation. "There's some lightness in here somewhere."
Yes, it's wedged back behind the assassinations, political corruption, war carnage, crumbling educational system and Khmer Rouge revelations. The fest, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah, might start to feel like 11 Days of Glummer.
But perhaps that's to be expected. The implosion of the independent distribution system amid the ever-present threats of a maimed economy and two wars has provided festival organizers and filmmakers an opportunity to cut loose and follow their probing passions,...
