After Danny Cron graduated from the California Institute of Arts in 2018, he did exactly what his instructors at the Valencia school recommended: he booked showcases in hopes of finding his first big acting gig.
But when the representation didn’t materialize and the roles remained unattainable, he was at a loss over what to do next. “I’m from Santa Fe, New Mexico. My mom was a teacher, my dad was a lawyer. I could not be further removed from this industry,” said the 29-year-old Cron. “You think, why am I not there yet? What’s going on? It’s almost like a scarcity mindset, or at least for me, a sense of panic. Because it’s really scary and intimidating to be out here. It can be very alluring when you find programs that claim they’re going to take care of all of it for you.”

On Dec. 5, SAG-AFTRA members wrapped Hollywood’s season of labor turmoil by ratifying the contract deal that ended the 118-day actors’ strike. Voting 78.33 percent to 21.67 percent to approve the compromise reached by their negotiators, actors sent a resounding, if not overwhelming, message that the agreement — the merits of which had inspired heated debate online for weeks — was sufficient to end a fraught negotiation period.
The contract, valued at over $1 billion, is the result of the 160,000-member union’s stand over the changing nature of employment for performers in the streaming era and the rising threat of AI. “I hope [this deal] sends a clear message to anyone who thought that ultimately SAG-AFTRA wouldn’t go on strike or its members weren’t willing to take that hit to make sure that the contract terms were fair. Hopefully that notion has been dispelled,” the union’s chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

As an alternate member of the Screen Actors Guild negotiating committee, Shaan Sharma spent most of this last year strategizing with other committee members and going back and forth with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers over deal points that are important to actors and their futures in the entertainment industry. As the issue of artificial intelligence is top of mind for performers, who have concerns about how the digital technology will shape Hollywood and impact their career trajectories, it was also a priority for committee members. Sharma,...

Two members of the SAG-AFTRA board said they voted against the new contract because it does not do enough to protect actors against artificial intelligence.
The negotiating committee unanimously approved the deal last Wednesday, ending the 118-day strike. The national board approved the deal on Friday, with 86% of the weighted vote in favor, and sent it to members for ratification.
Shaan Sharma and Anne-Marie Johnson were among at least eight dissenters on the 80-member board. Both said that AI was key to their opposition, though they also had other reservations.
“There should be no AI. Only human beings should be used in what we create for public consumption,” Johnson said. “Without staving off AI, everything we achieved is for naught. It’s a waste of time.”

Producers must give actors at least 48 hours to prepare a self-tape — longer if it’s before a weekend – and not assign more than eight pages to read for the first audition, according to a summary of SAG-AFTRA’s potential three-year contract.
Producers must also provide opportunities for actors to interview virtually or in person if they don’t want to do a self-tape, but it’s only on a first-come, first serve basis with special accommodations made for senior performers, minors and actors with disabilities.
Producers must also “endeavor” to respond to actors who want to find out if the role has already been cast.
“It is so essential that members avail themselves of that option,” said SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee member and L.A. Local Self Tape Work Group Chair Shaan Sharma (The Chosen). “It’s one of biggest stresses of the self-tape era, not knowing who is working behind the scenes,...

Exclusive: The podcast world is becoming further unionized.
Earlier this year, SAG-AFTRA introduced two contracts that covers podcasts – the Independent Podcast Agreement and the MicroPod Agreement.
The Table Read podcast, which offers writers the chance for their unproduced scripts to be discovered, has become one of the first to sign the Independent Podcast Agreement with the union.
It means that the actors, comedians, musicians, and influencers that perform on the Table Read podcast are now covered. This gives them essential protections, respectful working conditions, and equitable compensation for their contributions. It also means that the performers have access to the support and resources provided by SAG-AFTRA.
The agreement protects against the unauthorized use of their voices through digital duplication and AI technologies and ensures that compensation received contributes to their eligibility for union healthcare and pensions.

A pair of hot-button Instagram posts from a former casting director-turned-acting coach has once again put the spotlight on whether SAG-AFTRA should enforce audition pay — an entitlement that’s been in the actors’ contract since 1947.
Samantha Stiglitz, whose former casting credits include Burn Notice, Pretty Little Liars and Final Destination 5, told her 34k-plus followers that it would be “problematic” to pay actors for what is essentially “a job interview.” Stiglitz told Deadline that she’s aware that actors have long been entitled to compensation for auditions; information about the fee structure is available on the SAG-AFTRA website.
She’s just worried that producers would severely scale back the number of actors they would consider for a role if they had to pay them all for auditioning.

Under the towering green Gaslamp District sign on Fifth Ave. during the Friday of San Diego Comic-Con, a giddy group of cosplayers and SAG-AFTRA members stood together holding strike solidarity signs.
Organized by the actors union’s San Diego membership president Larry Poole, the photo-op and gathering was approved by the national actors union and shared with local members through an email blast a handful of days before. Striking SAG-AFTRA and WGA members, as well as cosplayers — both of the fan variety and some who are themselves in IATSE — joined the 30-minute meet-up for local talent, one of the first in the city since the performers guild announced it would strike beginning July 14.

Deadline Strike Talk hits a dubious 12th week milestone today, with the business shut down and actors picketing alongside the writers. Host Billy Ray has put together another strong group of guests who put the plight of working actors in relatable and understandable terms. Joining are four actors, three of whom are on the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. Sarah Ramos’ credits include The Bear, Winning Time, and Parenthood; Shaan Sharma’s credits include The Chosen and Mr. Mercedes; Charles Bodin’s credits include Good Trouble, Halt and Catch Fire, and The Last Tycoon; and Andrew Leeds’s credits include Barry, The Patient, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
What emerges from their talk is compelling evidence that the idea of a middle class for actors has been wiped away, and they cite one member who had decent speaking parts in 13 things, and still did not make the $26,000 or so needed to qualify for healthcare.

But what if the ratings don't meet the executives' expectations? After all, the episodes have already been released elsewhere. Could it be pulled, as other acquired series have been? Stay tuned.

As the clock ticked toward midnight on July 12, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher addressed the group of negotiators from the major studios.
“You’re sitting on the wrong side of history,” she told them. “Shame on you.”
It had been clear for some time that Drescher’s union would go on strike. A final day of talks with two federal mediators had done nothing to bridge the gaps between the two sides. Drescher’s speech served as the exclamation point — a dramatic flourish from a born performer — casting the dispute over business models and residual formulas in Manichean terms.
Best known for her 1990s sitcom “The Nanny,” Drescher has now taken a starring role in Hollywood’s “hot labor summer.” On Thursday, she led her union of 160,000 members into its first TV and film strike in 43 years. It is also the first “double strike” — with writers and actors together on the...

"Someone creeping up behind us?" "No... it's something else." Well Go USA has revealed the official trailer for a sniper action thriller mashed up with horror film called Bone Cold, featuring the tagline: "sometimes we make our own demons." The film is heading direct-to-video in June, another of these junky action films getting dumped onto DVD right away. After bad intel from headquarters results in a tragic civilian death, an elite sniper duo attempts to flee the area but can’t seem to shake a mysterious, inhuman creature stalking them from the shadows. They are hunted by something sinister and monstrous... hungry and determined. Starring Jonathan Stoddard, Matt Munroe, Trinity Bliss, Jennifer Khoe, Shaan Sharma, Elise Greene, and Danielle Poblarp. This movie doesn't look entirely awful, but doesn't look that good either. // Continue Reading ›...

Film and TV actors might be contractually entitled to collect half-a-day’s pay when they audition but aren’t hired, though very few ever collect. The payments have been codified in every Screen Actors Guild and SAG-AFTRA contract since 1937, but the payments are not automatic – actors have to file a claim to receive them, and few ever do.
On Wednesday, however, after Deadline made inquiries, the union said that it now will pursue claims for audition pay under specific circumstances.
“Until further notice,” the guild said in a posting on its website, “members should expect the union to pursue audition pay claims in the following circumstances, provided that the performer is not offered employment in the picture and that the requirements of the audition pay language within the schedule applicable to the role being cast are otherwise met:
1. When the producer or casting director expressly require the performer to memorize their lines in advance.

Fran Drescher claimed victory in her race for president of SAG-AFTRA on Thursday night, and vowed to lock arms with her fellow union members and “rise up out of the melee.”
Easier said than done.
Drescher takes charge of a union that is famously fractious, and more divided than it has been in recent years.
Even as the star of “The Nanny” defeated Matthew Modine by a narrow margin, Modine’s dissident faction — Membership First — gained seats on the national board, took overwhelming control of the Los Angeles local, and won the election for national secretary-treasurer, the third-ranking post in the union.
Drescher’s party — Unite for Strength — will still command a majority on the national board, observers say. And as president, Drescher will decide who serves on which committee — including the committee that will negotiate the union’s next TV/Theatrical contract in 2023.

Ballots for the upcoming SAG-AFTRA election are in the mail, and once again, national board candidate Shaan Sharma has come under fire from members of the union’s Unite for Strength ruling faction. Two years ago, a fellow L.A. Local board member and Unite for Strength stalwart referred to him in an email as a “brown lackey” of the union’s opposition MembershipFirst faction, and “the epitome of brown boys who are Republican traitors to our race.”
“My personal experience is that the current ruling regime treats anyone who dares to speak up and question or criticize anything with contempt, aggression, exclusion, and retaliation,” Sharma writes in a lengthy message to the union’s members, in a letter attached to his official campaign statement on the SAG-AFTRA election site. “It’s how I’ve been treated, constantly. Opponents of changes coming to the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan said tonight they are considering legal action to prevent thousands of participants and their family members from losing their health coverage when the sweeping changes take effect on Jan. 1, 2021.
“We have been talking to lawyers. We have been talking to government agencies,” said Patricia Richardson, president of the union’s Los Angeles Local and the host of tonight’s Virtual Union Hall – the second in a series of Zoom meetings organized by leaders of the union’s longtime opposition party. “I can tell you right now, there’s some illegal stuff going on here. There’s certainly a lawsuit. Whether there’s going to be money for the lawsuit is a whole other question.”

Two members of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee that bargained for the union’s recently ratified film and TV contract said tonight that they had not been told during the talks of the severity of the problems facing the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan.
The plan’s restructuring is projected to remove some 3,500 participants and 3,200 family members from coverage come Jan. 1 because they can’t meet the earnings requirements.
Jane Austin and Jodi Long told a virtual town hall that they’d heard inklings of trouble for the health plan last fall, but had no idea that it was this bad. They also said that they believe the union’s members would not have ratified the film and TV pact had they known the Plan was in such dire straits. This year, the Plan is projected to run a deficit of $141 million, which comes after a $50 million deficit last year and a $48 million deficit the year before.

Exclusive: Hard times call for hard decisions, which trustees of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan say they had to make to save health benefits for future generations of participants.
Even before the pandemic, the Plan was facing unsustainable deficits, and the Covid-19 production shutdown accelerated the need for a complete overhaul of its benefits structures. Sources familiar with the Plan’s projections say that roughly 3,500 participants and more than 2,800 of their dependents no longer will qualify for health coverage because of the new earnings requirements that take effect on January 1. That’s about 10% of the 33,000 participants and 9% of their 32,000 family members now covered by the Plan. However, those participants who have $13,000 in earnings will be eligible to continue their coverage under a new Transition Benefit.

More than 1,300 angry SAG-AFTRA members have signed a petition calling on the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan to overturn changes that will leave many members without health coverage during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Plan says that the changes, which go into effect January 1, are needed to keep the Plan solvent in the face of staggering deficits. Premiums and earnings eligibility requirements will be going up for many – though not “doubled premiums” or “nearly doubled” annual earnings, as the petition says. And recent retirees who are 65 or older won’t be allowed to use their residuals income to qualify for the new $25,950 annual earnings threshold.
See the petition here.
“I question the legality of these changes,” wrote petition-signer Frances Fisher, who is a SAG-AFTRA national board member and a vice president of the union’s Los Angeles Local. “Speaking personally and perhaps for every performer lucky enough to actually have a pension – we don’t ‘retire.

As SAG-AFTRA’s two factions threaten to fracture the guild further – now they’re threatening to see each other – independent presidential candidate Jane Austin has embarked on a campaign to unify the 160,000-member union in advance of next year’s negotiations for a new film and TV contract.
Saying that “the two-party slate system represents an antiquated system that no longer effectively serves the interests of the membership,” Austin now is rolling out her endorsements for board candidates from both parties – incumbent president Gabrielle Carteris’ Unite for Strength slate and challenger Matthew Modine’s Membership First opposition slate. Austin, currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer, was elected to that post two years ago on the Membership First slate.

SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris and seven of her supporters are threatening to file a lawsuit against their opponents over recent allegations of misconduct by Carteris.
United Screen Actors Nationwide, which endorses Carteris, issued the threat Thursday against presidential challenger Matthew Modine and 19 of his allies running on the Membership First slate, including Ed Asner, Diane Ladd, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Martin Sheen.
Pamela Jeffrey of the New York firm of Levy Ratner wrote a cease-and-desist letter in response to a July 29 threat from attorney Robert Allen to file a lawsuit on behalf of unnamed members if Carteris was not removed from the ballot. Membership First, the “loyal opposition” at SAG-AFTRA, has unveiled its slate of candidates in the upcoming elections. Patricia Richardson is running for president of the guild’s Los Angeles local, and Frances Fisher and David Jolliffe are vying for two local vice president slots. As previously reported, Matthew Modine heads the slate in his bid to unseat Gabrielle Carteris as president of SAG-aftra, and Jodi Long is running for national secretary-treasurer.
Richardson, who is the La local’s first vp, was defeated by incumbent Ken Howard four years ago in the race for president of the 160,000-member union — “We have the largest local, half the union’s members,” Richardson said in her campaign statement. “Our building, doubling as national headquarters and our home, now a construction site rented at $6,000,000 a year, is inadequate for our needs.
