Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro will add a further string to his bow this season as part of the songwriting team behind the music of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Del Toro directs his warm and wild stop-motion animated adaptation of the classic story from Carlo Collodi with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is a project the Oscar-winning filmmaker has nurtured for years, and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale. The film makes its world premiere at the London Film Festival on Saturday.
I can confirm that the project marks del Toro’s debut outing as a songwriter, too. The musical film features several numbers with music by Alexandre Desplat—who won his second Oscar for his score for del Toro’s The Shape of Water—and lyrics by Roeban Katz and del Toro. Songs are performed by the cast including David Bradley, Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz, and Gregory Mann,...

Sophie Turner, a.k.a. the Queen in the North, is back in the cold in Quibi’s first teaser for its upcoming thriller “Survive” — only this time the “Game of Thrones” alum isn’t fighting White Walkers to stay alive, but the frigid conditions she’s found herself in after a plane crash.
In the 52-second clip, which you can view above, Turner’s character Jane is flying home after a stint in a treatment center where she appears to have been recovering from something (note the group-therapy session and pill bottles) but we don’t know what, and we don’t have time to find out, seeing as that aircraft doesn’t make it to its final destination.
Now Jane and Paul (Corey Hawkins), the only two passengers to live through the crash, are “totally screwed” and need to find a way to live through the horrifying situation they’ve found themselves in.

A short trip to a hazy finish line, thriller “Ride” has a decent premise in the driver of an Uber-type rideshare service finding himself imperiled by the hidden agenda of an increasingly threatening passenger. But despite its brief runtime, writer-director Jeremy Ungar’s film has space enough to never quite settle on a tone, reducing its suspense potential by various gambits — in particular an antagonist whose primary impact is more annoying than frightening.

"Sometimes when you trust your impulses, incredible things can happen." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Ride, which is indeed a horror movie about ride-sharing apps (like Uber and Lyft). I knew they'd make one of these films one day, and here it is, and it looks as bad as I thought it would. Just so cheesy and unnecessary and an exaggeration of the horror of car services, because why not, let's scare everyone and make them even more paranoid. Ride is described as a "cautionary tale aimed at a technology-obsessed society." Ugh, of course it is. When James, an Uber driver, and his passenger, Jessica, pick up the charismatic but manipulative Bruno, a normal night out in La becomes a psychological war for survival. Starring Jessie T. Usher, Bella Thorne, and Will Brill. This film looks so excruciatingly bad. Here's the first official...

Here’s the wacky and awesome news of the day: Paul Williams, Gustavo Santaolalla, and Guillermo Del Toro are partnering to bring Del Toro’s brilliant film Pan’S Labyrinth to the stage!
Apparently Del Toro has beeen working on this in secret for awhile now, and came up with the book for the musical with Jeremy Ungar.
Paul Williams will write the lyrics, and he’s a longtime veteran of the industry with a great many credits for composing and work in the music department (The Muppet Movie and Phantom Of The Paradise are a couple notches in his belt). Gustavo Santaolalla would write the tune-age. He has composed and worked on the soundtracks for Biutiful, Babel, Brokeback Mountain, The Motorcycle Diaries, 21 Grams, and so many more.
It all sounds like a good match for a movie that had such lush visuals, costumes, and sets that a musical just might work.

Pan’s Labyrinth, arguably Guillermo del Toro’s masterstroke as a filmmaker, is getting turned into a stage musical.
There are some big names involved with the project, and they are:
GdT (of course), who’s been secretly working on the musical for four years and who’s co-written a companion book for the stage version with Jeremy Ungar.
Paul Williams (Phantom of the Paradise), who’ll write the song lyrics.
Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel), who’ll compose the music.
Robert Fox (The Boy From Oz, Frost/Nixon), who is set to produce from his London homebase.
This will end up either a musical masterpiece, or a really interesting failure. Can’t wait.

In 2006, Mexican writer-director Guillermo del Toro drew worldwide notice for his original fantasy feature Pan's Labyrinth. The Spanish-language film, which centered on a young stepdaughter who copes with the cruelty of her new father by escaping into a treacherous and fantastical world, earned an impressive $83 million worldwide, and won near universal praise. Its incredible visuals not only garnered Academy Awards for art direction and makeup, but also cemented del Toro's reputation as a distinct and visionary storyteller. But he's not done with this story just yet. Deadline reports del Toro is developing a English-language stage musical of Pan's Labyrinth. He's been working on the adaptation for four years in secret. As the celebrated storyteller scripted its book with Jeremy Ungar, he has also been meeting with directors, librettists and composers. His exhaustive search for the right team has recently yielded lyricist Paul Williams, who co-wrote the Muppets classic "Rainbow Connection...

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has revealed on his message boards that his upcoming supernatural film "Crimson Peak" isn't akin to "The Haunting of Hell House" as previously reported.
Rather it's a Bronte-esque "gothic romance with ghosts", think a spookier take on the Thornfield Hall scenes of "Jane Eyre." It's also his most direct horror movie in many years.
"It’s set at the turn of the century and it is a gothic romance with ghosts. When I use the Gr [gothic romance] term I use it not in the Barbara Cartland model but rather in a Bronte fashion. Dark and stormy and wind-swept. This is my first foray into horror since "Mimic." "The Devil’s Backbone" was more of an essay on ghosts than a ghost story and, except as a producer, I have not returned to scary stuff in a long time."

After four years of work under the radar, plans to bring Guillermo del Toro's stunning Pan's Labyrinth to the stage as a live musical are finally being solidified.
Del Toro worked with Jeremy Ungar to write the book (aka the script for the show), with cinema composer Gustavo Santaolalla writing the music and Paul Williams handling lyrics. Del Toro will produce the project, though no word yet on who will be directing.
It will be interesting to see how Pan's Labyrinth, the story of a girl who escapes into a fantasy land that might be more terrifying than the warzone she is escaping, will be attempted on the stage. While the film is an FX wonderland, so much of it was done practically that I imagine it would translate rather well.

Guillermo del Toro has his hands in movies, books, video games, and we can now add musicals to the list. A new report reveals that del Toro is moving forward with a stage musical adaptation of Pan’s Labyrinth.
Deadline reports that Paul Williams has signed on to write the lyrics, while Oscar-winner Gustavo Santaolalla will be composing the music. Here’s what del Toro had to say about them coming on board:
“I admire and love Gustavo and Paul wrote the perfect album in Phantom Of The Paradise, which I have loved for decades”
While it’s still too early for release or casting details, Guillermo del Toro and Jeremy Ungar have completed a book for the stage version. The project has been in development for the last four years, but sounds like it’s picking up steam, so we should have more details in the very near future.
