The 55th edition of the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival returned to life in a fully live format Friday after a year-long Covid-forced break, with its traditional rousing dance numbers and a lifetime achievement Crystal Globe for Michael Caine.
The versatile two-time Oscar winner prompted his third standing ovation from the audience packed into the fest’s Grand Hall at the Hotel Thermal when he raised his walking cane from the stage in thanks to his fans.
Saying he began his actor’s journey as “a nobody from nowhere who knew nothing,” Caine told the crowd, “You’ve given me an award for something I love doing.” Fest president Jiri Bartoska honored him with what the actor called the heaviest prize he’s ever tried to lift at an upbeat ceremony featuring elaborate choreography themed around the 1960s U.S. pop song “Popcorn,” with dancers whirling discs that riffed on...

The 33rd edition of the Pilsen-based festival has wrapped, awarding the best domestically produced oeuvres in the process. This year’s previously postponed edition of the Czech annual showcase of domestic cinema and audiovisual works, Finále Plzeň (see the news), managed to wrap successfully before the country entered a state of emergency owing to a new spike in coronavirus cases. After the festival provided an in-depth overview of domestic production from the past 2019-2020 season and offered a sneak peek at upcoming theatrical releases with a slew of premieres, the annual film gathering wrapped with its awards ceremony. The country’s nominee for the Oscars, Václav Marhoul’s The Painted Bird, Ondřej Provazník and Martin Dušek’s senior-starring revenge road movie Old-Timers and Michal Hogenauer’s English-language feature debut, the social thriller A Certain Kind of Silence, all locked horns for the Golden Kingfisher Award, but Marko Škop’s family...

“I’m No Longer Here,” a drama about immigration and identity by young Mexican director Fernando Frias, was the big winner at the Cairo Film Festival, which wrapped Friday.
“I’m No Longer Here,” which turns on a 17-year-old urban tribe leader forced by conflict with a cartel to leave Mexico for Queens, scooped Cairo’s top prize, the Golden Pyramid, for best film. It also took acting honors for newcomer Juan Daniel Garcia Trevino, who plays Ulises Sampiero, leader of Los Terkos, who are known for their dance moves and extravagant hairstyles. In Queens, Ulises winds up either sparking hostility from other immigrants or being treated as a fashion curiosity. The pic, which launched internationally in Cairo, is generating buzz after recently scoring the top prize at the Morelia fest in Mexico.
The Cairo jury, headed by Oscar-winning U.S. writer-director Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana”), awarded the Silver Pyramid to “Ghost Tropic” by Belgian helmer Bas Devos,...

When Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s East of the West competition opened to submissions from the Middle East two years ago, festival artistic director Karel Och noted it was “about time to abandon the political definition of the ‘East of the West’ countries,” long determined by the geographical boundaries hemming in the former Soviet bloc.
Though not the first time the section rewrote its borders — Greece, Turkey and Cyprus were also invited to compete several years ago — the decision was a clear sign that a competition long known for championing distinctive new cinematic voices was evolving to keep pace with the times.
This year’s selection is no exception, with formal experimentation and provocative storytelling marking many of the 12 films in competition. “We always try to put together a colorful selection, to combine films with different artistic approaches, various genres,” says programmer Lenka Tyrpakova. “We aim to discover distinctive auteur...
