Writer Adam Rockoff reteams with director David DeCoteau on a new Lifetime thriller that bears a striking resemblance to this month’s earlier title, Million Dollar Lethal Listing.
In Fatal Fixer Upper, Vivian (Jasmine Aivaliotis) and Ryan (Philip McElroy) are a young married couple preparing to purchase their dream home. Just like in Million Dollar Lethal Listing, the deal is too good to be true: the house is wildly underpriced, the owner is looking for a quick sale, and they’re asked to make a hefty cash deposit.
Unlike the former title, though, there’s no mystery about who the villain is in Fatal Fixer Upper. The film opens with a classic Lifetime cold open that immediately establishes that there is a bad man keeping an eye on things. His identity is quickly revealed as Josh Thomas (Duke Van Patten), the home’s original owner and the person spying on...

Participant, the 20-year-old film and television production company whose mission was to inspire social justice and humanitarian action, is shutting down.
Founder Jeff Skoll broke the news to a staff of roughly 100 on Tuesday. Established in 2004, Participant co-produced or co-financed a number of notable movies including best picture Oscar winners “Spotlight” and “Green Book,” as well as Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and the breakthrough documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”
Almost all of Participant’s employees will be dismissed, multiple sources familiar with its plans said, and no new content development or production will be pursued. What’s left will be a skeletal holding company overseeing the Participant library, which represents interests in the 135 films it has made.
“I founded Participant with the mission of creating world-class content that inspires positive social change, prioritizing impact alongside commercial sustainability. Since then, the entertainment industry has seen revolutionary changes in how content is created,...

Where to Watch ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Okay’: Hulu (The series originally aired on Freeform.)
The pilot for “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” is still a marvel. What it accomplishes in such a short time — setting up a new family dynamic between Nicholas (Josh Thomas) and his two younger half-sisters (Kayla Cromer and Maeve Press) after their father dies unexpectedly — is paired so expertly with a perfect balance in tone. It’s more than your standard “there’s comedy in every tragedy” premise, where characters laugh through their grief. Watching that first episode, you can’t help but feel that something special is starting.
For two seasons, the intertwined lives of Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve powered their own emotional universe. Along with Nicholas’ eventual boyfriend Alex (Adam Faison), they formed the basis for the kind of show that could have easily stayed inside its cozy,...

It’s a bit ironic that a show titled Everything’s Gonna Be Okay is anything but since it’s being canceled after two seasons. It does sound as though the lead star, Josh Thomas, isn’t too broken up about this and is already working on several other projects, but there’s been a rash of cancelations lately that some might think is indicative of, well, something. The truth is that TV shows get canceled on a fairly regular basis a lot of times and per year one can probably lose count of ideas that manage to film a pilot but don’t go any

The delayed Season 2 of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay finally bowed in April, marking the return of the Freeform comedy created and executive produced by and starring Australian comedian Josh Thomas.
Thanks to the production shutdown because of the pandemic, the series’ planned arc for its sophomore season had to change. The result is a more introspective story in Okay, which centers on Thomas’ Nicholas, a twentysomething entomologist from Australia raising his two teenage half-sisters Matilda (Kayla Cromer) and Genevieve (Maeve Press) after the death of their father. Matilda is autistic — and by the end of Episode 209, “Carolina Spinx Moth,” it’s becoming clear Nicholas might be too.

“I didn’t want character growth,” confesses “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” star Josh Thomas about his mindset more than a decade ago. Now I feel like people change a little bit.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
He adds, “When I first started making TV I stubbornly didn’t want that because I didn’t believe in anybody’s ability to change. A teenage girl on the autism spectrum tells her girlfriend, who is also on the autism spectrum, that she realized she actually isn’t sexually attracted to women. Although this might end the relationship for many couples, the particular couple ends up continuing on — and even getting engaged — because the other half comes out as asexual and is comfortable with her partner having sex with men outside of their relationship.
To be more specific, that second young woman in question identifies as a homo-romantic asexual. Heading into Season 2 of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, creator, executive producer and star Josh Thomas was trying to figure out the best way to address the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of a Freeform comedy.

There are multiple times over the first three episodes of Season 2 of “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” when Nicholas is talking to his mother and he puts her on mute to talk to someone else. The first time it’s played for a tiny grace note laugh, but by the time it happens again, it’s more a quick shorthand for a complicated intercontinental relationship.
In just a handful of beats, it tells any viewer that Nicholas (played by series writer and creator Josh Thomas) is the kind of person who can hold multiple conversations at a time (when he wants to), he’s often driven by impulse, and that — all the way from Australia — Penny (Vivienne Walshe) is looking to unburden her own anxieties just as much as Nicholas is avoiding having to take any on.
That’s the flavor of simple economical character work that “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” thrives on.

Hundreds of users at Gold Derby predict at the Golden Globe Awards that “Dave” will follow in the the footsteps of “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “Derek,” “Louie,” “Master of None,” “Ramy” and “Who is America?” from the last decade. Have we ever been in more need of a laugh than in 2020? Amidst a historic global pandemic, a tumultuous American political election, civil unrest, wildfires, Murder Horne… alright, you get the picture. 2020 has been the pits, man. Thankfully, this year from hell featured some bright spots on television, even if rays of sunshine were sorely lacking in reality.
If the shows on our list weren’t making us laugh, we would have been ugly-crying since March. While we were all locked in our homes, we got reacclimated with the Warner Brothers (and sister), said goodbye to BoJack Horseman, and met regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, making quarantine a bit more bearable, if only in 30 minute increments. From brand new series like How To with John Wilson, to swan songs for Den of Geek favorites like Schitt’s Creek, TV comedies in 2020 kept us cackling through the chaos.

2020 was a year when many turned to television to distract and soothe.
And, against all odds, television — most of it made in the pre-covid-19 era, only to debut in a landscape where the world had irreparably changed — delivered an opportunity to escape and relate. Long derided as the pedestrian sibling of the entertainment landscape, it was the medium’s very quality of immediate accessibility that allowed it to shine at a time when nothing was certain and nothing made sense.
Below, in alphabetical order, are the shows — not limited series, chill out chess freaks who are already scrolling for “The Queen’s Gambit” — that debuted in this brave new world. Below you’ll find stories that inspired, engaged — and don’t dismiss the importance of this last one — entertained. It’s not just Peak TV, It’s Peak Cataclysm TV.

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay follows Nicholas (Josh Thomas), who becomes the caretaker of his half-siblings after his father’s untimely death. Freeform’s freshman comedy follows Nicholas’ journey as he attempts to be a parent, balance a relationship, navigate grief and raise two teenage sisters one of which is on the spectrum.

“There’s nothing not fun about making a TV show,” declares Josh Thomas. In our recent video chat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “It’s really cool. If they offer you your own TV show, my advice would be to say yes! Every day is weird and different. You sit in the dark with a small group of people and think about ideas and chat about how you can make it better. And then you go out and do it. The only thing that’s weird is when they put it on TV and people watch it with their opinions or whatever. Making it is really nice.”

In order to promote health and safety guidelines in the wake of the novel coronavirus, Freeform is launching a multi-platform social distancing campaign called #StayTheFFHome, Variety has learned exclusively.
The goal of #StayTheFFHome is to encourage the Freeform audience to take state officials’ “safer at home” and “shelter in place” advisories seriously. To further entice young adults to hunker down wherever they dwell, Freeform has put together a special programming lineup to give them something to binge and will be running special PSAs on-air and across social media in which talent from the network’s shows talks about the importance of social distancing and flattening the curve. Additionally, Freeform will be branding billboards and other outdoor posters with the logo for the campaign.
“Freeform is a brand that is inherently built on taking a stand on issues our audience believes in — what is more important at a time like this than encouraging social distancing?...

Josh Thomas has come a long way in the past decade. With Season 1 of his latest TV venture “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” coming to a close, he’s now at the helm of his second show. He has a certain handle on filling the roles of creator, writer, and star simultaneously, but it wasn’t always that way.
“When we made ‘Please Like Me,’ I’d never been on set before. I’d never seen a set. I didn’t know I was the boss of the first season. I didn’t own Final Draft when we started making it. I had to download it and figure out the shortcuts. So to make a show where like I was technically proficient was a real thrill,” Thomas told IndieWire.
