Mumbai, March 29 (Ians) Hindi cinema has not written very many lead female characters who have careers, although to be fair to scriptwriters, many of the roles for women have been full of substance. And depth.
It is thoroughly interesting therefore to walk into a movie that is about the story of not one but three diligent friends who are working as cabin crew for the fictional Kohinoor Airlines.
Director Rajesh Krishnan helms a 122-minute joy ride in his heist comedy film Crew starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon playing the leads.
Until their peaceful lives take a dramatic turn, all seems to be fine with the three rather glamorous women — Geetu (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kapoor Khan) and Divya Rana (Sanon), who are a part of an airline crew aged between the 20s and the 40s — when they are unexpectedly caught in a difficult situation orchestrated by someone with ulterior motives.

Set in a very Munnar-like fictitious town, the story revolves around Swati Shetty (Konkana Sen Sharma), a not-so-talented chef aspiring to open a Paris-inspired hotel one day. Married in an uber-rich family, her husband Prabhakar Shetty (Manoj Bajpayee) is the futile little brother to Arvind Shetty (Sayaji Shinde), who handles the drug business in the disguise of a tea plantation.
Oh & once a professional nurse, Swati also has an extra-marital affair with Prabhakar’s masseuse, who, for some weird reason, also looks like a lean, bearded version of him. Prabhu somehow gets killed, and Swati does...

Made In China
Starring Rajkummar Rao, Mouni Roy, Boman Irani,Paresh Rawal, Gajraj Rao,Sumeet Vyas
Directed by Mikhil Musale
There is much to be loved in this original and bracing tale of a petty Gujarati entrepreneur who hits the big-time selling an aphrodisiac, apparently made in China. Rajkummar Rao has never been more credible, not even in his most brilliant performances. His Raghuvir Mehta is a bit of a simpleton with a heart of gold and the mind of a Gujju businessman gone wrong—or so it seems from his hilarious litany of failures about which his jerk of a cousin(Sumeet Vyas, brilliant) never ceases to taunt and ridicule him.
Rao is an exceptional actor in the worst of times. Made In China gives him a script and character to chew and build on. And boy, Rao has a ball! He is in full charge of his vulnerable...

The most unique feature of Sonchiriya
From Birju in Mother India (1957), to Gabbar in Sholay (1975) to Phoolan Devi in Bandit Queen (1994) to Paan Singh Tomar in 2012, Bandits/dacoits have been a constant reminder of the people in the Chambal ravines and their struggles. An all evil like Gabbar to victims of class struggles like Birju, Phoolan, Pan Singh, Dacoits/bandits have fascinated the Indian silver screen like cowboys in Hollywood westerns. The terrifically mind blowing Bandit Queen...

Sonchiriya
Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpai, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Ranvir Shorey
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey
Some of our actors are so inured in brilliance we’ve ceased to notice their power. Ranvir Shorey is one of them. He just blends into the bleeding colours of brilliancy in this exceptional film set in the dark desperate world of dacoits in the confounding ravines of the Chambal valley.
By singling out Shorey’s brilliance I don’t mean to undermine the other performers, most of whom are so skillfully effective, they seem to have been born in the hungering shadows of their ever-renewable excellence.
But then the point here is not the brilliance. It is how the rites of accomplished filmmaking are applied to a solid narration that are on your mark and all set to go even before we are fully able to grasp the wide spectrum of characters on the run.

Hansal Mehta’s latest film Shahid, based on the life of slain human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Hansal, who has made films like Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2000), Chhal (2002), Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) and Woodstock Villa (2008) before, speaks about his career trajectory, his inspiration to make Shahid, and his tough journey with the film:
What is Shahid about?
Shahid is based on the remarkable journey of human rights lawyer / activist Shahid Azmi. It is a very personal account of an inspiring life tragically cut short. As Cameron Bailey of Tiff describes very beautifully on the Tiff website “it marries elements of political thriller, personal biography and romantic tragedy while being a courtroom drama at its core.”
What inspired you to make a film on the life of Shahid Azmi?
I was out of the country for nearly 3 years between 1990 and 1993. When I returned...
