In a city where you can discover a film festival every weekend of the year, perhaps the most unique of such offerings is located in Rockaway, Queens. Taking place just a few blocks from the beach, the 6th edition of the Rockaway Film Festival will occur August 19-August 27, and we’re pleased to exclusively debut the lineup of award-winning documentaries, premieres, live music and dance performances, shorts programmes, and rare repertory screenings.
Organized by Sam Fleischner and Courtney Muller and sponsored by Blundstone®, Istic Illic Pictures, and NYC Ferry, this year’s edition will open at their flagship outdoor theater, Arverne Cinema (constructed using scraps of boardwalk that were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy), with Disney’s famous feature masterpiece Fantasia. There will be a program of shorts preceding it by cine-magician Oskar Fishinger, whose groundbreaking animations changed the cinematic frontier. The festival will also present the New York Premiere of...

The Traitors star Alex Gray has admitted that she turned down a spot on Love Island before joining the BBC game show.
The presenter and actor appeared last year on the hit reality series, in which 22 strangers compete to win a shared cash prize while three members of the cast are secretly trying to eliminate the other contestants and grab the money for themselves.
Gray, 27, entered the competition with her boyfriend Tom Elderfield, 24. However, the pair kept their relationship a secret, with Elderfield only revealing it later in the game in a bid to gain the trust of their fellow competitors.
Speaking to Swns, Gray said that she was attracted to the BBC competition series after saying “no” to appearing on Love Island.
“That kind of genre of reality show where it is more about prancing around in a bikini and falling in love with other contestants, that wasn’t for me,...

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is due for release next year – will it be the last time fans see Zoe Saldaña in the MCU?
The much-anticipated third instalment of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is due out next May.
It will wrap up the current team’s story, meaning that the film will presumably be the last time we see many of the franchise stars in their respective roles.
Alongside Saldaña as Gamora, Chris Pratt plays Star-Lord, Dave Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer, and Karen Gillian plays Nebula.
Saldaña, 44, has played the green-skinned character since the first Guardians of the Galaxy film in 2014. Gamora has became a fan-favourite, making numerous appearances in other MCU movies.
Most recently, however, Saldaña reprised her role as Neytiri opposite Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully in another hugely anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

Despite all the buzz surrounding Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the film has failed to break into Netflix’s illustrious film club.
Rian Johnson’s sequel to his 2019 murder mystery film has proven to be a hit among audiences, with the film receiving mostly favourable reviews.
Glass Onion was released on Netflix on 23 December. It streamed 82.1 million hours in the first three days, the streaming service announced on Tuesday (27 December).
This figure makes Glass Onion the streaming giant’s sixth biggest film debut, narrowly missing out on a top five position.
The film follows behind Sandra Bullock’s 2021 film The Unforgivable (85.86 million hours) and The Gray Man – starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans – which streamed 88.55 million hours when it was released in July this year.
The Unforgivable and The Gray Man stand at Netflix’s number five and number four debuts, respectively.

Whoopi Goldberg has apologised for her controversial comments about the Holocaust not being about race, for the second time.
Goldberg was suspended by ABC earlier this year after suggesting the Holocaust “was not about race” on the American talk show The View.
In a new interview published on 24 December, Goldberg appeared to repeat her past controversial view that the Holocaust “wasn’t originally” about race. Her remarks immediately received backlash from Jewish leaders who denounced the Ghost actor’s comments.
“My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race,’ ” Goldberg said.
“Nazis saw Jews as a race,” The Sunday Times reporter told Goldberg in the interview, to which she responded, “Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it? The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them?...

The Traitors star Meryl Williams has said she is taunted by bullies when out in public.
Last week, Williams was crowned winner of the BBC One competition alongside fellow contestants Aaron Evans and Hannah Byschowski. The three split the £101,050 jackpot between them.
The 26-year-old is 4 ft and 2 inches tall and has achondroplasia.
Following her victory on The Traitors, Williams has described harrowing experiences that she has had to deal with on an everyday basis.
“Throughout school I was lucky and I was treated the same as everyone else, but in public I face discrimination on an everyday basis,” she told The Scottish Daily Express.
“There’s not enough awareness of my condition. I think people often see some sort of hilarity in it because often dwarfs are in pantomimes and because of the Oompa-Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Williams continued: “A lot of people are taken aback. They point and laugh.

An old episode of Chuck Woolery’s dating show Love Connection has resurfaced, and people can’t get enough of the two contestants.
The hit dating show, which lasted 11 seasons beginning in 1983 and running until 1994, followed blindly matched couples on their first dates, who would later reveal their first impressions to host Woolery in front of a live audience.
A particular clip of 1994 contestants Robin Dimiceli and Curt Levey has made the rounds on TikTok, with people applauding Dimiceli for absolutely “roasting” Levey.
“I like women who are deep, and she just didn’t seem like a deep kinda person. She seemed more like the kind of woman who probably knows all the colours of lipstick, but couldn’t tell you who the Vice President of the United States was,” Levey told Woolery.
Offering her judgement of Levey from their first phone call, Dimiceli quipped: “I thought he had a monotone voice,...

One of the winners of The Traitors has said that appearing on the show has brought out a more “independent side” to her.
The game show saw 22 strangers play “the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust”, where three contestants were chosen as “traitors” who must “murder” the remaining “faithful” participants while trying to stay above suspicion themselves.
*Spoilers for The Traitors finale below*
The show reached its climax on Thursday (22 December) night, with long-standing Traitor Wilfred and the newly recruited Kieran competing against Faithfuls Hannah, Meryl and Aaron.
However, Wilfred turned on Kieran, encouraging the Faithfuls to vote him out. But as Kieran left, he got his own back by hinting to the other contestants that Wilfred had been a traitor all along. Ultimately, the Faithfuls banished Wilfred and won the £101,050 prize pot between them.

Keep an eye on Katie Kelly. The young actress has an X factor that suggests an ability to shoot to the top of the A-list in no time. You can just tell, sometimes. Kelly showcases that star quality, as well as some serious acting chops, in the new drama Sno Babies, a film that asks a lot of her. It’s a challenging role, one she’s able to handle with ease, delivering work that elevates the flick in a big way. The final product overall is a bit hit or miss, in terms of its effectiveness, but Kelly never hits a false note. If you choose to see this tale of drug addiction, you’ll be seeing it for her, and you likely won’t regret it. The movie is an addiction drama, focusing on the hidden epidemic of opioid addiction in small town, suburban America. It depicts not...
