Tom talks us through ten great moments from five seasons of the dearly departed Chuck...
Spoiler Warning: If you fancy watching Chuck fresh, it might be worth giving this article a miss for now, as it is full of spoilers. Feel free to come back once you have watched it though!
I’m crap at watching TV. Not the act of sitting down, snacks in hand, and enjoying a good programme, that bit's easy. I do find it tricky to sit myself in the chair the same time each week to keep up with a series, though.
The DVD box-set is therefore a big friend of mine. I have discovered many of my favourite shows – The Wire, 24, Mad Men, Misfits – a while after they originally aired. Holding its head high among those is Chuck. I have to confess to my ignorance and admit I knew very...

In honor on the series finale of "Chuck" (Fri., Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. Est), we asked fans to submit questions for co-creator and executive producer Chris Fedak, and they, of course, came through.
On Twitter and in the comment area of our call for questions, "Chuck" fans had dozens of great queries; so many and so great, in fact, it was very hard to narrow the roster down to manageable size. So we didn't narrow all that much and let Fedak decide what to answer. Lucky for "Chuck" fans, he was game enough to answer more than 30 fan questions.
Below, find out why Jill didn't come back, the one song that got away, where Jeff and Lester could be a few years from now and much more!
Take it away, Mr. Fedak...
Hello "Chuck" fans! Thanks for the questions. I see that Mo has kindly sent me, let's see, whoa.

Chuck Review, Season 5, Episode 8, “Chuck Versus the Baby”
Written by Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFrac
Directed by Matt Barber
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
From the beginning, the relationship between Chuck Bartowski and Sarah Walker has been the driving force behind Chuck. She began as his CIA handler, they started dating, and she ultimately fell for him. Their relationship has pushed Chuck to become more confident on missions and at home. As they’ve grown closer and become a couple, Chuck and Sarah have become a stable force. It’s a positive change for their lives, but it doesn’t always lead to fascinating television. This situation has hindered Sarah during this season and pushed her to the sidelines far too often. She’s playing a necessary role in Chuck’s life but seems less essential to the ongoing story. This has nothing to do with Yvonne Stahovski...

This one was all about Sarah Walker.
Thanks to Daniel Shaw's cryptic ending to last week's "Chuck vs. the Santa Suit," we knew that something was up. What we didn't know was just how much of Sarah's past would come to light in "Chuck vs. the Baby."
It was a sentimental, occasionally even sappy episode. And here are the Top 5 moments!

Tonight on Chuck: Meet Sarah's Mother
New episodes are scarce at this time of year so thankfully there is a fresh outing of Chuck tonight for those who are watching this fifth and final season.
Last week's Christmas episode featured the return of Daniel Shaw (Brandon Routh) who ended up defeated again and back in prison, but this doesn't mean he didn't wreak havoc for all those on team Bartowski. Shaw ended the episode asking for a meeting with Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and he revealed that he knew a big secret about Sarah and her past that involved a baby and the country Hungary. What could this big secret possibly be?
Not one to stand still Sarah takes immediate action tonight that will see her heading out into the field alone, despite Chuck's (Zachary Levi) protests. Chuck of course wants to know his wife's secret but wants to...

Does Sarah have a baby?
That's the question many a Chuck fan had to ask after Daniel Shaw dropped a "baby" bomb on us at the end of "Chuck vs. the Santa Suit." This week's episode, "Chuck vs. the Baby" looks ready to give us some answers on Sarah's murky past. We've got a video clip from "Chuck vs. the Baby," some spoilers, and even a goodbye from the set of Chuck itself. So keep reading!

Chuck Review, Season 5, Episode 7, “Chuck Versus the Santa Suit”
Written by Amanda Shuman
Directed by Peter Lauer
Airs Fridays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
It’s rare to see brand-new episodes from the networks during the week before Christmas, especially only two days before the big event. Given Chuck’s weak ratings since its move to Fridays, NBC appears to be plowing through the remaining episodes as quickly as possible. The benefit for fans is the chance to watch fresh content during a pretty dead zone for television. This week’s theme also centers on Christmas, so it makes sense to air the story right before the holiday. It’s a great time to catch up with a show that’s starting to find its legs again during its final run.
Coming on the heels of the first great episode of the season, “Chuck Versus the Santa Suit” arrives with high expectations.

Holiday Chuck: Chuck Versus the Santa Suit
Before I get into this week’s Chuck, I just want to apologize for not reviewing last week’s episode. I wasn’t able to catch it right away and by the time I did see it there was little point in writing about it. I can say right now I didn’t enjoy it very much. The episode suffered from lack of character continuity, but there were still some fun moments, even if everything was littered with plot holes. Thankfully, “Chuck Versus the Santa Suit” was without a doubt a great episode of Chuck. The characters behaved exactly the way I would expect them to, and we got a return of one of my favorite villains (although, I may be alone in that regard).
What makes Chuck so likable, despite its many flaws (bad special effects, poorly structured plots) is it’s fully formed characters.

Chuck 5.07 "Chuck Vs. The Santa Suit" Review
Chuck season 5 dresses up its seventh entry with this week’s "Chuck Vs. The Santa Suit" as Chuck races to recover a piece of stolen CIA technology with General Beckman, while a returned Daniel Shaw (Brandon Routh) holds Sarah hostage in time for Christmas and computer virus "The Omen" looms over the Buy More.
Shaw's return and the surprising reveal of Sarah's secret at episode's end will likely what most take away from "Chuck Vs. The Santa Suit," but as one of the better episodes of the season, it's a shame more people might not see what keeps this little show kickin'.
First of all, I should start this review by telling you that I nearly missed Chuck tonight, so swept up in the holiday preparations that it barely even occurred to me there might be fresh TV episodes to watch. Not that...

Here's how good this Christmas episode of "Chuck" was: The NBC promo department's unleashing a rather huge spoiler two weeks ago had only a negligible impact on how much we enjoyed it.
Would it have been better not to have seen Daniel Shaw before he was revealed to be the mysterious prisoner the Omen virus released? Sure. The show clearly wanted it that way -- we saw his feet and body in the breakout scene, but his face was out of frame until he surprised Sarah in Castle.
But it's a testament to the show that even though those of us who saw the promos could connect the dots and realize Shaw was the one pulling the strings, "Chuck vs. the Santa Suit" still managed to be full of holiday awesomeness.
Appropriately, the return of Shaw echoed the last episode with Brandon Routh in a lot of ways: He went...

Whether it was Daniel Shaw in season three or Alexei Volkoff in season four, Chuck has had some of its more memorable moments in recent history when Team Bartowski is challenged by a charismatic and interesting villain.
That's the one thing that this final season of Chuck had been missing... up until "Chuck vs. The Santa Suit," when Shaw made his triumphant return. Equal parts ruthless and charming, Daniel Shaw made it as difficult for our heroes to succeed as he made it entertaining for the audience to watch.
Shaw complimenting himself through the Sarah-sounding voice box, as well as making out with a passed out Sarah Walker to see if there was any fire left between them, was certainly reason enough to bring back the fantastic Brandon Routh for this episode. The fact that it was also an explanation for why all of these random bad guys were out...

The first time I cued up this Friday’s episode of Chuck (NBC, 8/7c), I admittedly shrugged — after all, it was another instance of a bad guy laying siege to Castle. Been there, done that. But then something happened: The episode started to knock my socks off, again and again, ultimately leaving me with the biggest grin and, yes, damp eyes. (It elicited the same emotions even upon a second viewing.)
I won’t spoil the thoroughly thrilling, extremely emotional hour any more than the NBC promos have (meaning I am about to discuss the big baddie), but in the...

Have Chuck and Sarah been naughty this year? On Friday's Chuck (8/7c, NBC), it looks like Santa is bringing them something far worse than a lump of coal: their old nemesis Daniel Shaw!

Following a nail-biting will-they-or-won't-they renewal process, "Chuck" is returning to NBC on Monday . Last time we saw NBC's "Chuck," it was during its explosive finale, when, following a showdown with Brandon Routh's villainous Daniel Shaw, Chuck's best friend Morgan, blew up the Buy More store where they worked.
"It was an accident," says Joshua Gomez, who plays Morgan. The newly refurbished Buy More, as well as Chuck, Sarah, Morgan and the rest of the gang, are back for the fourth season of the acclaimed but sometimes low-rated action comedy.
It was given a second (or is it third?) chance by NBC and picked up for a new set of 13 episodes. Like its third season, its also been given the option for an additional 9. Gomez's Morgan, who learned about his friend Chuck's double-life as a spy just last season, also gets another chance at helping out on missions following his costly mishap.

If you’ve ever watched a James Bond flick or played a covert shoot-em-up video game you’ve probably fantasized about what it would be like to live the spy life. Often it’s glamorized with expensive cars and beautiful women broken up with brief bouts of action. It sounds like a pretty sweet package. Chuck, the series about an average geek who becomes a spy courtesy of a program imprinted into his brain, takes a lot of the romantic splendor out of the idea and replaces it with a wry smirk where lavish parties give way to life in retail and witty repartee with villainous baddies is replaced by overly self-conscious banter poking fun at some of the more overused spy vs. spy tropes that many film geeks have pointed out to their friends from the couch. At least, that’s how the series started: Chuck learning the ropes...

Season 4 Premiere: Monday, September 20 at 8:00pm Et/Pt on NBC.
We Chuck fans know that the fact that I could write “Season 4 Premiere” above is pretty awesome. For those not in the know, Chuck was supposed to be a Dead Spy Walking last season. Thanks to the great Subway Sandwich campaign at the end of Season Two, NBC renewed Chuck for a thirteen episode Season Three (as opposed to a normal twenty-two). We were all happy to receive just that, but when The Jay Leno Show tanked, NBC found it needed more hours of programming, so Chuck, which had a bit of an uptick in its ratings, was asked to produce six more hours. Since those additional six hours were ordered after the original thirteen episodes were plotted out, it was as if Season Three had two full storylines and two finales. All the better for us Chucksters! So...

As we reported from Comic-Con, this upcoming season of Chuck will be seeing a number of changes, one of which is the reconstruction of the Buy More after it was destroyed by Daniel Shaw in the season finale. Besides Jeff and Lester being on the lam because they believe they were responsible for the store's explosion, an additional change is coming in the form of the store's new bosses. Unbeknownst to most of the employees, the Buy More will now run by the CIA. The store will still be a place for the public to get its favorite electronics, but will now be managed by CIA agent Greta. Here's the thing about Greta, though: Greta can be a woman or a man. This will lead to a whole host of guest actors and actresses signing on each week to play the part. It was revealed during the ChuckComic-Con panel that...

"Chuck's" fourth season will be "chuck-ful" of guest stars.
Besides Linda Hamilton coming on as Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Ellie's (Sarah Lancaster) mom, "Attack of the Show" co-host Olivia Munn and '80s action star Dolph Lundgren come on for the premiere episode.
If you may recall, when last we left our heroes, Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez) had accidentally dropped a detonator that set of bombs placed in Buy More by Daniel Shaw (Brandon Routh).
But like the mythical phoenix, rising from electronic equipment ashes, the Buy More will live again. Creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak discuss how Munn fits into the new business.
Another exciting bit of casting announced during the "Chuck" Comic-Con panel is Isaiah Mustafa, aka The Old Spice Guy.
We're hoping to see plenty of him in just a towel. Here's what Schwartz tells Zap2it about him:

Did you miss last week's episode of Chuck, "Chuck vs. the Living Dead?" Check out a recap here. If you'd like to skip to the second hour of the two-hour Chuck season finale, "Chuck vs. the Ring: Part II," click here.
"Chuck vs. the Subway" opens in Castle where Stephen Bartowski is working on a new Governor for the Intersect 2.0. He would be progressing faster if Chuck wasn't hounding his father. Chuck worries that the new Governor won't work, but his father tells him to relax. It will work, but if it doesn't, Chuck should consider leaving. "Are you saying I should run?" Chuck asks his father. Not necessarily, but sometimes, a person has to leave in order to protect those he loves, Stephen replies, obviously familiar with such a strategy. Sarah, hearing the tail end of their conversation, wonders who is leaving. Stephen covers by saying that Chuck was talking about a vacation.
"Chuck vs. the Subway" opens in Castle where Stephen Bartowski is working on a new Governor for the Intersect 2.0.

After a somewhat slow Season 3.5, which revolved mostly around Chuck and Sarah's deepening relationship and, lately, how the Intersect is killing Chuck, last night's two-hour season finale ratcheted it up seven notches and matched Season 3.0's finale earlier this year. That's a season finale, folks. And so far, it may be the best finale of the network television season. It did everything a season finale should do: It wrapped up the 3.5 plotline, had a lot of great action sequences, it had one huge "Nooooooo!" moment, and it perfectly set up next season. (Bonus: It didn't completely negate more than half of the series.)
The long and short of it is this: The Ring resurrected Daniel Shaw, via some sort of cellular regeneration device, inserted their own Intersect into him and made him The Ring's ringleader. And who knew that Brandon Routh could be such a fun supervillian? That deadpan, listless muahahaha was brilliant.

The 2 hour season finale airs tonight at 8/7c on NBC. The first hour is entitled Chuck Vs. The Subway and the second is Chuck Vs. The Ring: Part II. Shadowy thugs from the Ring inch closer to take down Chuck and his team, but not if Chuck's father (Scott Bakula) has anything to say about it. Elsewhere, Casey undertakes a clandestine mission to protect his daughter from the Ring; and big news about Buy More's Big Mike. It looks like a great finale and will feature flashbacks of a young Chuck. Hopefully Daniel Shaw will go down for good this time and Ellie will stop being stupid. I'm so glad we have a fourth season to look forward to!

"This is everything about me. And if something should happen to me, the only person I want to have it is you." With the potential threat of Daniel Shaw hanging over their heads, everyone seemed to be thinking about their own mortality, with Team Bartowski uncovering Shaw's "spy will" and Chuck and Sarah drafting their own. Given the dangerous line of work that they're involved in, it's more than likely than not that having such a document will be a good thing, a chance to say goodbye to a loved one, to make a confession, to offer up their true selves. On this week's episode of Chuck ("Chuck Versus the Living Dead"), written by Lauren LeFranc and Rafe Judkins and directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, Chuck once again found himself attempting to live a double life when his father Stephen (guest star Scott Bakula) arrived in Los Angeles after receiving a...

Things are moving a little too fast on "Chuck" now not to strain credibility, but it's forgivable at the moment because it's apparent they're trying to hastily set up the season finale to season 3.5. And since it was written and filmed before it became official that "Chuck" had been picked up for a fourth season, I'm curious to see how much resolution that final episode will offer. It's a two-parter, so my guess is that it could've doubled as a series finale, which means that Chuck and Sarah may ride off into the sunset together. For the summer, at least.
Back to last night's episode: It had something of a false start. Chuck's Dad, Steve, made another welcome return, bumbling and brilliant as ever. The first half of the episode, however, played with the ridiculous notion that Chuck -- whose brain is being demented by the intersect -- wouldn't want...

The first few episodes following what was supposed to be the season finale of "Chuck" were decent, but last night was kind of a screeching departure. Instead of continuing along with self-contained episodes, "Chuck" dipped back into the mythology, it took a weird turn, and I don't think I like where it's going. Kballs accurately predicted the next phase of "Chuck," in a comment last week:
So Chuck possibly going crazy feeds into my big story arc possibility that can be explored for quite awhile:
Why not have Chuck be tortured by the memory of having to kill someone? Especially someone he knew and trusted. Maybe that's part of the reason the Intersect will be fritzing his brain next week (allegedly). At any rate, if they simply ignore the ramifications of Chuck's first kill after making him blindly and dangerously opposed to doing it under any circumstances before, it...

"You are a Bartowski, Chuck. Start acting like one." - Ellie After the darkness of last week's episode of Chuck, last night's installment ("Chuck Versus The American Hero"), written by Matt Miller and Phil Klemmer and directed by Jeremiah Chechik, brought back a lot of the humor and lightness that had been missing, with the action spinning out to include Casey, Morgan, and Devon's task force, the Picasso-like stalking skills of Jeff and Lester, and a nice callback to Ellie's belief that Casey is a degenerate lowlife. But it also offered a major revelation in the second half of the episode, one that will likely shape next week's installment, originally designed to be the season finale. Yes, NBC has initially ordered thirteen episodes for Chuck's third season and "Chuck Versus The American Hero" was designed to be the penultimate episode of the season. That's abundantly clear from the aura...

We open with Shaw in black lowering himself into a vault with a gold Aztec-looking mask on a pedestal in the center; a bolt falls onto the floor from his descent rig and sets off the alarm. The vault closes and the air is siphoned out of the room. Shaw asks Casey over the com, “Is the Intersect busy?”
Hannah is telling the Intersect she wants him to teach her, but what she had in mind was Not for Chuck to run off after Sarah. She asks Morgan about him, mystified at what meaning his continuing relationship with Sarah could have. Morgan, however, is just as mystified, especially when Chuck says he has to run off on a Nerd Herd emergency. Morgan is the assistant manager – he should know before Chuck about any repair calls. Hannah runs off after him, ostensibly to shadow the emergency. As he goes to work...

This season of Chuck has had more action-packed, guest-filled episodes than the previous seasons combined, and there’s no way that could have happened without the relentless support from the fans. Each of us should give ourselves a huge pat on the back when we enjoy each new episode, as it was our doing that it’s even on the air. With that in mind, next week’s episode, “Chuck vs. First Class” looks to be a good one.
Last week, we got such names as Superman Returns star Brandon Routh and Angie Harmon. This week, things get more interesting as Smallville’s Kristen Kreuk and WWE star Stone Cold Steve Austin join in while Chuck racks up his frequent flier miles. From NBC:
CIA agent Daniel Shaw (guest star Brandon Routh) assigns Chuck (Zachary Levi) to his first solo mission in Paris, ignoring Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Casey’s (Adam Baldwin) wishes.

We got our first taste of Daniel Shaw (guest star Brandon Routh) in this week's episode. Routh is definitely a great casting coup for this season of Chuck, but what of Shaw's secret past? He sure made a big spiel about the trouble family and friends can cause in a spy's life. But if that look on his face as he pulled out a wedding ring is any indication, there's a lot more we have left to learn about this guy. Could his desire to keep people at arm's length have anything to do with losing someone close to him? If I were a betting woman, I'd say yes.
As for Shaw's involvement in the Chuck/Sarah relationship, well, I'm not entirely opposed to obstacles. See: Bryce Larkin and Jill Roberts. Maybe it's...

If you missed last week's Chuck, check out a recap here.
"Chuck vs. Operation Awesome" picks up right where the previous episode ended, with Captain Awesome (hereafter called by his first name, Devon) captured by The Ring. Devon is being held on the roof of the hospital by Sydney Prince (Angie Harmon), operative for The Ring: Los Angeles. Sydney believes Devon to be a world-class CIA spy, and she needs him for something. Back in Castle, Chuck is freaking out about Devon's safety. Casey and Sarah tell him to relax and just go to work. They can't do anything for Devon until he is contacted by Sydney again — if she thinks he is a spy and he doesn't do what she says, she will kill him. Chuck tries to talk himself into being calm, but is unsuccessful.
Morgan, too, is unsuccessful in keeping his emotions in check. Despite Big Mike's...

Heavy breathing rasps in the darkness. A hood is yanked off, and we see Captain Awesome’s head – good news, he’s not dead! Bad news, a the leader of a Ring cell (‘ring’leader?), Sydney Price (Angie Harmon), has him taped to a chair on the roof of a very high building. She says she needs him for something “not too difficult for one of the CIAs best.” Somehow, the assassin mixed up Devon and Chuck, and now The Ring thinks that Devon is the super spy!
Sarah and Casey are trying, still, to calm Chuck down back at Castle. He just can’t, so he goes upstairs to work, where Big Mike is talking to Morgan about the changes he’s seen in him. Monday night's "Chuck" will bring Captain Awesome's (Ryan McPartlin) brief foray into the world of espionage to a close -- and just as important, it will introduce Team Chuck's new boss.
He is one Daniel Shaw, a highly skilled CIA agent and expert on the Ring -- and a guy that Chuck-Sarah 'shippers aren't likely to take a shine to, at least not in the early going. Brandon Routh, who will play Shaw over multiple episodes this season, understands.
"I'm keenly aware of that," the "Superman Returns" star says. "Being a fan of the show, I know the dynamics. Stepping in I was like, 'Man, people aren't gonna like me.' But you know what, it's Ok -- that's good. I will come off kind of as a little bit of a jerk to some people, I suppose, although I'm mostly pretty much business."

Brandon Routh says he's a pretty big fan of "Chuck," so he knows that his character this season, Daniel Shaw, is not destined to be popular with the show's die-hards.
"I was prepared," he told Zap2it when we visited the "Chuck" set in December. "I know that fans probably won't like me right away -- maybe never?"
And why is that? Well, Shaw -- who makes his first appearance in the show's fourth episode, airing Jan. 18 -- is a CIA operative who comes to Burbank to lead Team Chuck's operation against the Ring, the espionage network that's this season's big bad. And he just maybe, possibly could present an obstacle to Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski).
Want more of Routh's thoughts on his role? Click on the video below.
