Two critically acclaimed ABC dramas, "Queens" and "Promised Land," are on the chopping block after seeing their ratings slip in their first season. Both shows hold a 100 "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and were still north of a million viewers per episode, but the network has opted not to renew them.

ABC is not moving forward with Queens, cancelling the music drama after its freshman run.
The series, headlined by Brandy, Naturi Naughton, Eve and Nadine Velazquez, was one of the hottest pilots last season and carried a lot of expectations heading into the fall. It had an Ok premiere in October, earning 0.4 demo rating and 1.78 million viewers in Live+Same Day. But throughout the season, Queens, which aired Tuesdays the 10 p.m., was often bested by competing programing. Possibly factoring into the show’s ratings performance was the fact that, during its run, Queens had to overcome the departure of one of its stars, Eve, who took a break from the series upon announcing her pregnancy. In January, Queens creator Zahir McGhee spoke with Deadline about whether Eve would return.

Two ABC series, “Promised Land” and “Queens,” will not be returning for a second season, Disney announced on Friday.
“Promised Land,” a drama from Matt Lopez about a Latino family in California’s Sonoma Valley, debuted to great acclaim but mediocre ratings in January. After five episodes, it was pulled from ABC‘s schedule and the entire season moved to sister streamer Hulu.
At the time of the move, an ABC spokesperson said, “‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud. We know it has a passionate audience that is very invested in this show, and those viewers will be able to stream all subsequent episodes exclusively on Hulu every Tuesday for the rest of the season.”
The ensemble cast was led by John Ortiz and Christina Ochoa.

The ABC dramas “Queens” and “Promised Land” have both been canceled after one season at ABC.
“Queens” concluded its season on the broadcaster back in February. The series followed four women in their 40s who reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had in the ‘90s when they were legends in the hip-hop world.
Eve originally starred in the series as Brianna (aka Professor Sex), but she bowed out of the show midway through the season to go on maternity leave. It also starred Naturi Naughton as Jill aka Da Thrill, Nadine Velazquez as Valeria aka Butter Pecan, Taylor Sele as Eric Jones, Pepi Sonuga as Lil Muffin, and Brandy as Naomi aka Xplicit Lyrics.
Zahir McGhee wrote “Queens” and served as an executive producer. Tim Story executive produced and directed the pilot. Sabrina Wind also executive produced. Swizz Beatz served as executive music producer.

One of the best parts about tuning in to ABC's Queens is witnessing rapper Eve return to her roots. After all, the musical drama series follows a legendary female hip-hop group (aka the Nasty B*tches) trying to reclaim their throne. However, following the exciting news that Eve and her husband, Maximillion Cooper, are expecting their first child in February, Queens fans are wondering about the rapper's future on the show. According to Deadline, Eve filmed several scenes before taking maternity leave, allowing her to appear in most of season one, which premiered in October 2021.
As for her character Brianna's storyline, there will be an open-exit, making a return seamless and possible if Queens gets picked up for a second season. In the midseason finale on Dec. 12, we learn that Brianna is in critical condition after being shot by a masked gunman, who's later revealed as Jill's (Naturi Naughton) ex-husband,...

Whew! ABC's Queens left viewers with quite a dramatic cliffhanger when its midseason finale aired on Dec. 14. The episode picks right back up after the unexpected shooting that left Eric (Taylor Sele) and Brianna (Eve) suffering from gunshot wounds. The two are immediately transported to a hospital where the rest of the queens - Naomi (Brandy), Jill (Naturi Naughton), and Valeria (Nadine Velazquez) - wait to see if they'll both pull through. Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

Exclusive: Queens star Eve is going on a maternity leave as she is preparing for the birth of her first child in February 2022, Deadline has learned. The singer-actress, who plays one of the leads on the new ABC drama, Brianna, announced her pregnancy Oct. 15.
Eve has been commuting to Atlanta, where Queens films, from the UK where her family home is. ABC and the show’s producers have been supportive of the star, adjusting the schedule so Eve could film additional scenes before her leave to be with her family. As a result, Brianna will be in the majority of Queens‘ original 13-episode order, we hear.
We also hear that the character’s storyline is wrapped up in a way so Eve could return if she chooses to and should the series get renewed for a second season.

Queens star Eve had one request for series creator Zahir McGhee. “I said, ‘Z, we can’t have no wack-ass music,'” she recalls in a new, exclusive behind-the-scenes video featuring a sneak peek of tonight’s episode (ABC, 10/9c). “‘I can’t be a part of that.'”
Fortunately for Eve — and us — McGhee’s plan for the show included bringing rap and hip-hop legend Swizz Beatz on as executive music producer, which gave the drama its signature sound and led to scenes like the epic Naomi-Brianna rap battle that will unfold tonight. An allegedly hostile work environment, created in part by her on-air co-hosts, is what Meghan McCain says prompted her exit from The View earlier this year, as detailed in a new excerpt from McCain’s upcoming memoir.
In the passage from Bad Republican, first obtained by our sister site Variety, McCain says she was the target of “toxic, direct and purposeful hostility” throughout her four years at the daytime series. (TVLine has reached out to ABC for comment.) Monday’s episode of Dancing With the Stars can only be described as systematic, hydromatic, and y’know what, while we’re at it? Ultramatic, too.
The ABC competition traded in Mickey Mouse ears for Pink Ladies jackets on Week 5, in celebration of the movie musical Grease. And since we’re about halfway through the competition, it seems about time for a shocking elimination, which went down at the end of the broadcast.

The music video that opens ABC’s new drama “Queens” lays it on thick. Each member of the Nasty Girls — Naomi, aka Xplicit Lyrics (Brandy); Valeria, aka Butter Pecan (Nadine Velazquez); Jill, aka Da Thrill (Naturi Naughton); and Brianna, aka Professor Sex (Eve) — struts out of a burning mansion, across the bow of a luxurious yacht, and through a chorus line of half-nude dancers without missing a step. Directed by Tim Story, whose ’90s résumé boasts videos for Tyrese, ’N Sync and Ginuwine, the video for “Nasty Girl” knows what it has to do to evoke memories of the specific window in hip-hop history it’s trying to capture.
In a key difference from Peacock’s superficially similar comedy “Girls5eva,” the track “Queens” introduces here isn’t parodying its respective genre. Each of the women’s rap verses is sharp and distinct, making clear their talent as both individuals and a swaggering collective.

An October 2020 UCLA Hollywood Diversity study — which focused on broadcast, cable and streaming programming for the previous two television seasons — reported that, when it comes to racial diversity in television industry jobs, while Black, indigenous, and other people of color (Bipoc) creatives continue to make incremental gains, positions at the highest ranks and behind the camera still elude them. The group is not represented proportionately to their share of the U.S. population overall, even though audiences continue to show interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity.
The analysis found that the greatest racial disparities are in behind-the-camera jobs such as a show’s creator, director, and writer: Among digital programs, just 10.3 percent of show creators were Bipoc; in broadcast, 10.7 percent; and for cable, 14.7 percent.
White men still dominate these positions, as well as high-level TV executive jobs. As of 2020, chair/CEO positions were overwhelmingly held...

Updated with new photos: It was a long, pandemic-impacted broadcast development cycle, with some pilots taking a year to get produced, but the broadcast networks have made their picks for new scripted series to debut in fall 2021 as well as the bulk of their decisions for new midseason 2022 shows.
The pandemic forced broadcast executives to think outside the traditional broadcast pilot model and rely more heavily on straight-to-series orders, often based on additional scripts, sometimes delivered through the opening of a writers room.
Check out Deadline’s gallery of new 2021-22 shows. Those picked up straight-to-series that have not produced a pilot and have no episodic art available, are represented by their top talent on or behind the camera.
Click on the photo above to launch the gallery. You can find details on each of the new series below.

It's been a whirlwind day for ABC.
We've had the renewals of fan-favorite series such as A Million Little Things, The Rookie, and The Conners, the cancellation of Call Your Mother, and now ABC is closing off the day with some series pickups!
Fun, right?
The Wonder Years reboot, which has been a lock for a pickup ever since it was announced, has nabbed a formal series pickup.
We also have another new comedy on the way to ABC next season in the form of Abbott Elementary.
Then there are new dramas, Maggie and Queens, which both sound like they'll be solid additions to the ABC lineup.
Get up to speed on what the shows will be about below.

Four days before ABC’s upfront presentation, the network has made its first new scripted series pickups for the 2021-22 season, with nods to music-themed drama Queens and comedies The Wonder Years, Maggie and Abbott Elementary.
Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, and the Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, emerged as frontrunners at the script stage and remained strong during casting, production as well as screening and testing of the finished pilots.
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary also was an early standout, while Maggie Mull and Justin Adler’s Maggie, headlined by Rebecca Rittenhouse, proved a textbook dark horse, staying largely under the radar until a very strong showing during screenings.
ABC has already passed on a number of pilots, including comedy Adopted, and expect more pilot passes this afternoon, while some pilots will remain in active consideration for midseason.

Alexander Hodge will guest star in ABC’s drama pilot “Epic,” hailing from “Once Upon a Time” creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. The actor joins previously announced lead cast members Eleanor Fanyinka and Brittany O’Grady in the ABC Signature production.
“Epic” is described as a romantic anthology series that reinvents fairytales for a new audience. O’Grady will play Luna, who is a fairytale princess made cynical by a broken heart. She doesn’t believe in love stories, which is unfortunate because she is about to find herself caught in the most epic one of all — her own. Fanyinka will play The Seer, a mysterious and playful figure who can lead you down the path of true love. ABC did not provide a character description for Hodge.
Most recently, Hodge was seen as Andrew on the fourth season of the critically acclaimed Issa Rae series “Insecure” on HBO, and...
